LangGraph is the strongest general-purpose alternative to Harness2 when recursive work needs explicit state, branching, checkpoints, human approval and auditable traces. Choose CrewAI for a fast role-based prototype, Microsoft Agent Framework for Azure or .NET estates, OpenAI Agents SDK for a thin delegation layer, LlamaIndex Workflows for document-heavy pipelines, Google ADK for GCP-native deployments, and Mastra for TypeScript teams.
Harness2 is unusual because it treats the agent harness itself as something that can improve. Its alternatives mostly provide runtimes for designing and operating agents; they do not offer a directly comparable, published harness-evolution benchmark. The right choice therefore depends on whether you need explicit workflow control, role-based collaboration, cloud integration, data orchestration or a lightweight delegation API.

What Harness2 does differently
Xu et al. describe Harness2 as a “plug-and-play, recursive agent harnessing framework” for open-world tasks. Instead of changing the underlying model, it improves the runtime harness around a frozen model and carries useful lessons into later tasks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe execution harness has eight editable parts:
- System prompt
- Guardrails
- Memory
- Skills
- Tool guidance
- Scripts
- Subagents
- A middleware plugin
Harness2’s central operation is a contrastive Propose–Probe–Compose step. It proposes candidate harness edits, tests them under matched conditions, and composes changes when behavioral contrasts support them. Task-level recursion can run in parallel or sequentially. Harnessing-level recursion updates a continual-improvement harness so that lessons can transfer between tasks.

How the alternatives differ from Harness2
Most alternatives solve a neighboring problem: they make recursive execution easier to design, observe and control. They generally do not automatically search across prompts, memory, tools, scripts, subagents and middleware in the way Harness2’s harness-level recursion attempts to do.
| Framework | Execution idea | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| LangGraph | Developer-defined graph with stateful runtime | Complex agents requiring precision, checkpoints and inspectability | More graph design and upfront control decisions |
| CrewAI | Role-based agents with task and process delegation | Fast prototypes of role-based teams | Less explicit low-level graph control |
| Microsoft Agent Framework | Graph workflows plus multi-agent patterns in Python and .NET | Microsoft, Azure and enterprise estates | Its strongest value depends on Microsoft ecosystem integration |
| OpenAI Agents SDK | Scoped assistants and delegation primitives | Minimal-abstraction, OpenAI-oriented workflows | Not a complete recursive harness-evolution system |
| LlamaIndex Workflows | Event-driven workflow orchestration | Document-heavy and data-intensive pipelines | More specialized toward data and document flows |
| Google ADK | Opinionated, batteries-included agent runtime | GCP-native teams wanting built-in debugging UIs | Cloud ecosystem fit matters |
| Mastra | TypeScript workflows, memory and Studio | TypeScript teams building production agents | Smaller fit outside TypeScript-centric stacks |
JetBrains summarizes the architectural distinction this way: LangGraph runs a graph you define, AutoGen runs a conversation between agents, and CrewAI runs a task list assigned to roles. That affects diagnosis: graph failures map to nodes and edges, conversation failures to message exchanges, and CrewAI failures to task outputs. Microsoft Agent Framework is positioned as the unified successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel in the 2026 framework guidance from LangChain.
LangGraph: best overall for controlled recursive execution
Why it fits
LangGraph is the closest practical substitute when your priority is not automatic harness evolution but precise control over recursive execution. You define a graph, represent working state explicitly, and decide where the agent loops, branches, pauses or asks a human for approval.
That model suits recursive systems in which an evaluator repeatedly sends work back to an execution node, a planner revises a task decomposition, or a tool result triggers another branch. Checkpoints make it possible to resume a long run, inspect intermediate state and replay a failure rather than restarting an opaque conversation.
How to model recursion
- Define a typed state. Include the user objective, plan, completed work, tool results, error messages, evaluator findings, retry count and approval status.
- Separate planning from execution. Use distinct nodes for decomposition, action selection, tool use, verification and finalization.
- Add explicit loop edges. Route failed verification back to planning or execution, with a bounded retry counter.
- Persist checkpoints. Save state before expensive tools and before human-review boundaries.
- Instrument every transition. Record node, input state, output, latency, tool calls and the reason for each branch.
- Make stopping a first-class node. Terminate on success, a retry limit, a safety violation or a request for human intervention.
Trade-offs
LangGraph asks you to make more decisions up front. You must design state schemas, edges, retry policies and checkpoint behavior instead of relying on a high-level role or task abstraction. That work pays off when a recursive run must be explainable or audited, but it can slow a proof of concept.
CrewAI: fastest route to a role-based team
Why it fits
CrewAI is a natural choice when your mental model is a team: a researcher gathers evidence, an analyst interprets it, a writer produces an output and a reviewer checks it. You assign responsibilities to roles and organize work as tasks or processes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a recursive design, a reviewer task can reject an output and send the work back to the researcher or analyst. You can also create a manager role that decides which specialist should act next. This is quick to demonstrate and easy for a team already comfortable with role descriptions.
Where control is reduced
The role-and-task abstraction does not expose the same low-level graph control as LangGraph. Complex branching, durable checkpoints, or unusual state transitions may require conventions around task outputs rather than a visibly defined graph. Debugging usually starts with the question “Which task produced the wrong result?” rather than “Which edge sent invalid state to this node?”

Choose it when
- You need a working multi-agent prototype quickly.
- The workflow maps cleanly to human-style roles.
- Task outputs are more important than a fully inspectable state machine.
- You can tolerate adding custom controls later if the prototype becomes production infrastructure.
Microsoft Agent Framework: enterprise choice for Azure and .NET
Why it fits
Microsoft Agent Framework combines graph workflows with multi-agent patterns and supports Python and .NET. It is the strongest fit when Azure, Microsoft Foundry, existing .NET services or a migration from AutoGen or Semantic Kernel is central to the project.
Use graph workflows for deterministic stages and multi-agent patterns where specialists need to collaborate. A recursive loop can send a failed result to a critic, route the critique to the responsible specialist and then return the revised artifact to verification.

- Whether your deployment, identity and observability already use Microsoft services.
- Whether the team can maintain both Python and .NET components where required.
- How much of the workflow should remain portable outside Azure.
- Whether migration compatibility is more valuable than a smaller, provider-neutral runtime.
Its advantage is ecosystem alignment, not a published proof that it improves recursive task scores over Harness2.
OpenAI Agents SDK: a thin delegation layer
Why it fits
OpenAI Agents SDK is appropriate when you want scoped assistants, tools and delegation without adopting a large workflow framework. A coordinator can hand a bounded subtask to a specialist, receive a result and decide whether to continue, retry or escalate.
This works well for customer-support triage, bounded research steps and applications where the recursion is shallow and the main requirement is clean delegation. Keep the scopes narrow: define what each assistant may do, which tools it can call, what output it must return and when control goes back to the parent.
Where it stops
The SDK is not presented as a full recursive harness-evolution system. It does not replace the design work for durable graph state, cross-task learning or systematic Propose–Probe–Compose experimentation. Add your own evaluator, run store, retry limits and change-management process if those capabilities are essential.

LlamaIndex Workflows: strongest for documents and data
Why it fits
LlamaIndex Workflows uses event-driven orchestration and is particularly well suited to document-heavy and data-intensive systems. Events can represent ingestion, retrieval, extraction, validation and publication, with a later event triggering a correction or reprocessing step.
For recursive document agents, keep the source document, chunk or record identifier, extraction schema, confidence, citations and validation errors in the event payload. A validator can emit a repair event for only the failed record instead of rerunning the entire pipeline.
Trade-off
This specialization is an advantage for knowledge and data workflows but can feel indirect for a general-purpose agent whose main complexity is conversation, long-lived business state or many conditional tool branches.

Mastra: TypeScript-first production workflows
Mastra targets TypeScript teams that need workflows, memory and Studio in a production-oriented developer experience. It is a good fit when the rest of the application, deployment pipeline and observability tooling already live in the JavaScript or TypeScript ecosystem.
A recursive Mastra design can keep working memory and durable task state separate: short-lived context travels through a workflow, while durable facts and prior outcomes are stored in memory with explicit retention rules. Teams outside TypeScript-centric stacks should weigh the cost of introducing a new language ecosystem against the framework’s workflow ergonomics.
Decision guide: match the framework to the recursion you need
| Your primary requirement | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit state, branching, checkpoints and human review | LangGraph | The graph and state model make recursion inspectable and controllable |
| Role-based prototype with minimal setup | CrewAI | Agents and tasks map directly to team responsibilities |
| Azure, .NET, Microsoft Foundry or AutoGen/Semantic Kernel migration | Microsoft Agent Framework | Enterprise integration and successor positioning reduce migration friction |
| Small number of bounded delegations | OpenAI Agents SDK | Provides scoped assistants without a larger orchestration layer |
| Retrieval, extraction and document validation loops | LlamaIndex Workflows | Event-driven data flow matches document pipelines |
| GCP-native operations and built-in debugging UI | Google ADK | Cloud ecosystem integration is part of the value |
| TypeScript production application | Mastra | Workflow, memory and Studio fit the language ecosystem |
| Automatic improvement of the harness itself | Harness2 or a custom evaluation layer around another framework | The alternatives do not provide a directly equivalent published harness-evolution mechanism |
How to build recursive behavior without losing control
1. Define the unit of recursion
Decide whether recursion revises a plan, retries a tool call, repairs an artifact, delegates a subtask or changes the harness. These are different loops. A retry loop should not silently become an unbounded planner loop, and a planner should not rewrite safety rules as if they were ordinary task state.
2. Set an explicit stopping policy
Use at least one success condition, one maximum-iteration limit and one escalation condition. Also stop on repeated identical failures, missing permissions, invalid tool arguments or evidence that the requested goal is impossible with available tools.
3. Keep state and memory distinct
Working state is what the current run needs to make its next decision. Memory is information that may be useful later. Persisting every intermediate message as permanent memory increases retrieval noise and makes later behavior harder to explain.
4. Add an independent verifier
The agent that produces an answer should not be the only judge of success. A verifier can check schema validity, citations, required fields, tool side effects, policy constraints or a test suite. Feed structured failures back into the loop instead of a vague “try again.”
5. Make tool use reversible where possible
Use dry-run or preview modes before destructive actions. Record arguments and results, require approval for irreversible operations and make retries idempotent so that a recursive loop does not duplicate payments, tickets, messages or database writes.

6. Trace the reason for every transition
For each loop, store the triggering observation, the selected branch, the state change and the stopping decision. This is the minimum needed to distinguish a bad model answer from a bad routing rule, stale memory, tool failure or an overly permissive retry policy.
Mapping Harness2’s eight editable components to other frameworks
| Harness2 component | How to represent it in a conventional framework | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| System prompt | Agent or node instructions | Usually edited by developers or deployment configuration, not automatically optimized |
| Guardrails | Validation nodes, policies, middleware or tool permissions | Must be tested separately from ordinary task logic |
| Memory | Checkpoint state, conversation history or an external memory store | Retention and retrieval policy remain your responsibility |
| Skills | Reusable tools, subgraphs, workflows or specialist agents | Versioning is needed to prevent silent behavior changes |
| Tool guidance | Tool schemas, descriptions, routing rules and examples | Poor descriptions can cause failures even when the tool works |
| Scripts | Deterministic functions, validators and integration code | Code paths need normal testing and deployment controls |
| Subagents | Delegated agents, roles or nested graph runs | Nested recursion can multiply latency and cost |
| Middleware plugin | Interceptors, callbacks, tracing and policy layers | Ordering mistakes can change behavior in ways that are hard to diagnose |
This mapping lets you reproduce many Harness2-style controls, but it does not create Harness2’s continual harness-level learning automatically. If you want that behavior, build an evaluation loop that proposes a change, runs matched comparisons, records the behavioral difference and promotes only changes that pass your acceptance criteria.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Evaluation and observability for recursive agents
Use matched comparisons
When testing a prompt, tool description, memory policy or routing change, hold the task set, model, tools and stopping rules constant. Compare the old and new harness on the same cases so that an apparent improvement is not caused by easier inputs.
Track more than final success
- Task success and partial completion
- Number of iterations and tool calls
- Latency and token consumption
- Invalid tool arguments and recoverable errors
- Human approvals and escalations
- Safety or policy violations
- State size and memory retrieval quality
- Failure location: planner, router, tool, verifier or finalizer
Promote changes conservatively
Keep candidate changes separate from the production harness. Require improvements on a representative evaluation set, check for regressions on safety and reliability cases, and retain a rollback path. A change that raises average task success while increasing destructive tool calls is not an improvement.
Common failure modes and fixes
Unbounded recursion
Symptom: the agent keeps replanning or asking another agent for confirmation. Fix: add a hard iteration budget, detect repeated states and escalate when no new evidence appears.
State pollution
Symptom: later steps consume stale plans, contradictory notes or irrelevant history. Fix: separate current state from durable memory, attach timestamps and sources, and prune or summarize completed branches.
Role or graph ambiguity
Symptom: two agents perform the same task or no component owns verification. Fix: give every node or role one clear responsibility, one input contract and one output schema.
Silent tool side effects
Symptom: retries duplicate an external action. Fix: use idempotency keys, preview modes, transaction boundaries and approval gates for irreversible operations.
False confidence from a single evaluator
Symptom: a change appears better because the evaluator shares the producer’s blind spot. Fix: combine deterministic checks, independent critique, representative cases and human review for high-impact decisions.
Best Value
Confusing framework scores with Harness2 scores
Symptom: a benchmark result from one project is presented as proof that another framework is better. Fix: report each result with its benchmark, configuration and measurement method. The published Harness2 figures are not controlled head-to-head scores for LangGraph, CrewAI or the other alternatives.
Migration approach from Harness2
- Inventory the eight harness components. Record which prompts, guardrails, memories, skills, tool instructions, scripts, subagents and middleware are active.
- Classify each component. Mark it as state, deterministic code, policy, tool metadata, delegated work or observability.
- Choose the target runtime. Use LangGraph for explicit graph control, CrewAI for role-based tasks, Microsoft Agent Framework for Microsoft estates, OpenAI Agents SDK for bounded delegation, LlamaIndex for data flows, Google ADK for GCP or Mastra for TypeScript.
- Port deterministic behavior first. Move validators, tool wrappers and safety checks before changing prompts or model behavior.
- Recreate recursion with limits. Add explicit loop edges or task re-entry, retry budgets, checkpoints and escalation paths.
- Build matched evaluations. Run the old and new implementations on the same cases and compare success, partial completion, side effects, latency and failure reasons.
- Introduce harness improvement last. Once the runtime is stable, test candidate prompt, memory or routing edits through a controlled propose, probe and compose process.
Costs, prerequisites and ecosystem considerations
The available framework descriptions do not establish current subscription prices, referral terms or a uniform cost model. Total operating cost depends on model calls, tool usage, storage, tracing, hosting and the number of recursive iterations.
Before selecting a framework, confirm the language runtime your team can support, the deployment target, data-residency and identity requirements, checkpoint storage, observability, human-review interfaces and the policy controls needed for external actions. A framework that is elegant in a local prototype may be a poor fit if it cannot meet your production audit or cloud requirements.

Final recommendation by team profile
- Most teams building serious recursive workflows: start with LangGraph and make state, checkpoints, verification and stopping rules explicit.
- Small team proving a role-based concept: start with CrewAI, then reassess whether the workflow needs a graph-level redesign before production.
- Azure, .NET or Microsoft Foundry environment: evaluate Microsoft Agent Framework first.
- Simple OpenAI-centered delegation: use OpenAI Agents SDK and add only the evaluation and persistence layers you actually need.
- Document and retrieval pipeline: use LlamaIndex Workflows.
- GCP-native application: use Google ADK if its operational integration outweighs portability concerns.
- TypeScript product team: use Mastra when its workflow and Studio experience fit your deployment stack.
- Need to improve the harness across tasks: keep Harness2 in consideration, or implement a measured harness-optimization layer around the runtime that best fits your application.
These recommendations are architecture-fit judgments based on the frameworks’ described execution models. They are not claims that any alternative has matched or exceeded Harness2’s reported benchmark gains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is LangGraph a drop-in replacement for Harness2?
No. LangGraph supplies explicit graph and state orchestration, while Harness2’s distinctive contribution is recursive improvement of the execution harness. You can implement comparable evaluation and promotion loops around LangGraph, but they must be designed and operated separately.
Which framework is easiest for a first recursive multi-agent prototype?
CrewAI is usually the most direct starting point when the workflow is naturally expressed as roles and tasks. Use LangGraph instead when you already know that branching state, checkpoints or human approval will be central.
Can these frameworks automatically optimize prompts and memory?
The framework descriptions do not establish an automatic, Harness2-equivalent optimization system. Prompt, memory, tool-guidance and routing changes generally require an evaluation loop that you build, test and govern.
How should I compare a framework with Harness2 fairly?
Use the same model, task set, tools, stopping limits and success definitions, then report task success, partial completion, iterations, latency, side effects and safety failures. Do not compare Harness2’s published benchmark numbers with unrelated framework demonstrations.
