For extremely long documents, the strongest documented alternatives are Google Gemini long-context models, Anthropic Claude variants with 1M-token context, and Meta Llama 4 Scout with a 10M-token maximum context. Gemini is the simplest managed option for very large multimodal uploads and repeated work, Claude is a strong managed choice for large document sets and codebases, and Llama 4 Scout is the open-weight option when data control, customization, or an unusually large architectural window matters more than hosting simplicity.
The largest context window is not automatically the best answer. Effective capacity is reduced by system instructions, tool state, output space and provider request limits, while accuracy depends on retrieval, cross-document reasoning, table handling, citation fidelity and contradiction detection. For many workloads, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), chunking or staged summarization remains cheaper and more reliable than submitting an entire corpus on every request.

Best choice at a glance
| Option | Documented context | Deployment | Best fit | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini long-context models | 1 million or more tokens for many models; current Gemini model documentation describes a unified 1M-token window for Gemini 4 Argon | Managed API and Google cloud ecosystem | Large multimodal uploads and repeated workloads using context caching | Model version, pricing, request limits and availability change; verify current terms before production |
| Anthropic Claude 1M variants | 1M tokens | Managed API and selected cloud channels | Large document sets, codebases and long-running analysis | Large files can hit request-size limits before the nominal token limit; access varies by model and plan |
| Meta Llama 4 Scout | 10M-token maximum context | Open-weight download or partner and cloud hosting | Data residency, customization, self-hosting and extreme context requirements | Hardware, serving software, licensing and real-world quality require your own validation |
If you want a managed service and do not need to operate infrastructure, start a bake-off between Gemini and Claude using representative documents. If self-hosting or control over where data is processed is decisive, evaluate Llama 4 Scout. Treat every maximum as an architectural ceiling, not a promise that every page will be retrieved or reasoned over correctly.

What an extremely long context window actually means
A context window is the maximum number of tokens a model can receive and use in one request, including your instructions, conversation history, document text, tool results and the model’s requested output. A 1M-token limit therefore does not mean that 1M tokens of source material are available for free: prompts, metadata, schemas and answer space consume part of the budget.

Advertised maximum versus effective capacity
Providers may publish a maximum while enforcing separate limits for file size, request bytes, number of files, output tokens, rate, concurrency or account tier. Anthropic explicitly warns that a large file can reach a request-size limit before the 1M-token context limit. Gemini documentation likewise describes model- and workflow-specific limits that should be checked for the exact endpoint you plan to use.
For planning, reserve room for a system prompt, document instructions, citations, intermediate tool results and a complete answer. A corpus that technically fits can still fail if the response needs a large output, if multiple files add overhead, or if the provider rejects the request before tokenization.
Retrieval is not the same as storage
A model can accept a long sequence without giving every section equal attention. Long-context evaluations therefore test needle retrieval, cross-section synthesis, table extraction, citation accuracy and contradiction handling rather than relying on the advertised number alone. A model that recalls an isolated sentence may still miss a qualification buried hundreds of pages earlier.

Page counts vary dramatically with language, formatting, code, scanned images, tables and repeated headers. Convert a sample of your own files with the target provider’s tokenizer or upload path. A text-heavy legal brief, a scanned engineering manual and a slide deck with images will consume context differently even when they have the same page count.
Google Gemini for very large and multimodal document sets
Google’s current long-context documentation says many Gemini models have context windows of 1 million or more tokens. The current model documentation also describes a unified 1M-token window for Gemini 4 Argon. Gemini is therefore a practical first choice when a managed API must ingest large collections that mix text, PDFs, images, tables or other modalities.

Why Gemini fits managed workflows
- Large document sets can be uploaded through a managed API instead of requiring you to operate an inference cluster.
- The platform documents context caching for repeated high-input workloads, which can avoid repeatedly moving the same large input when the workflow and model support caching.
- Multimodal input is useful when meaning depends on page layout, diagrams, screenshots or tables rather than extracted text alone.
- Google’s cloud ecosystem can simplify identity, storage and operational controls for teams already using its services.
Where Gemini needs careful testing
Model names, pricing, quotas, request limits and regional availability change. Confirm the exact model’s context, file-handling method, output limit and retention terms before committing an architecture. A cached prompt may reduce repeated input work, but it does not remove the need to test whether the model cites the right page, reconciles conflicting sections or preserves table structure.
Google DeepMind reported near-perfect retrieval, above 99 percent, in tested Gemini 1.5 long-context retrieval experiments in 2024. That is a vendor-reported result for the evaluated setup, not a universal accuracy guarantee for every Gemini version, document type or question. Use it as evidence that long-context retrieval can work, then measure your own corpus.

Anthropic Claude with a 1M-token context
Anthropic documents Claude variants with a 1M-token context window. The company’s context documentation states that for every model with a 1M-token window, 1M is the default and no beta header is required. Anthropic also announced a Claude Sonnet 4 1M-context variant and says the models are available through selected cloud channels.
Strengths for document and codebase analysis
- A documented 1M-token window supports large collections, long specifications and sizeable codebases in a single analysis session.
- Claude’s managed API model is straightforward for teams that want hosted inference rather than GPU operations.
- Long-running tasks can keep related definitions, requirements and examples in one request, reducing the bookkeeping required by many small prompts.
The request-size caveat matters
Anthropic’s warning about request-size limits is operationally important. A file can be below the nominal token ceiling yet fail because of byte limits or endpoint restrictions. Test the complete upload path, including encoding, attachments and output budget, rather than testing only a token counter. Access to a 1M variant can also differ by model, account and cloud channel, so document the exact model identifier in your configuration.

When Scout is the right direction
- You need data to remain in a controlled environment or a particular jurisdiction.
- You want to customize serving, prompts, quantization, fine-tuning or observability instead of accepting a fully managed endpoint.
- Your architecture benefits from an unusually large context ceiling and you can fund the hardware, storage, networking and operations required to serve it.
- You need multimodal input while retaining the option to inspect and modify the serving stack.
What the 10M figure does not guarantee
Ten million tokens is an architectural maximum, not proof that every 10M-token request will be affordable, fast or accurate. Serving software, memory, batching, quantization, concurrent users and output length determine production behavior. Meta’s single-H100 efficiency description is a design target for Scout, not a complete capacity plan for your traffic. Benchmark quality, latency and failure recovery on your own hardware and documents before promising a service-level objective.
Whole-context processing versus RAG and staged pipelines
Submitting the full corpus is only one architecture. The right choice depends on whether questions require global synthesis, how often the same material is reused and how much latency and cost the application can tolerate.
| Approach | Use it when | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-context submission | Questions depend on relationships across most of the corpus and the material fits practical request limits | Simple retrieval path; fewer chunk-boundary errors; direct access to distant evidence | Large input cost, higher latency, request-size risk and possible attention dilution |
| RAG | Only a subset is relevant or the corpus changes frequently | Lower per-query input, targeted evidence and easier incremental indexing | Retriever can miss the needed passage; ranking and chunk design require testing |
| Chunking with map-and-reduce summaries | The corpus exceeds practical request budgets or needs a repeatable batch report | Parallel processing and bounded requests; intermediate summaries can be stored | Errors can compound; details may disappear during summarization |
| Hybrid routing | Some questions need local evidence while others need global comparison | Uses full context selectively and RAG for routine lookups | More orchestration, routing logic and monitoring |
Use full context for global questions
Whole-context analysis is valuable for questions such as identifying every exception across a contract set, reconciling definitions spread through a standard, or comparing all chapters of a book. Give the model an explicit evidence format: require section names, page or file identifiers and verbatim excerpts for material claims.
Use RAG for selective and recurring questions
RAG is usually preferable when a user asks about one policy, one customer record or one subsystem in a large corpus. Retrieve more than one candidate passage, preserve document and page metadata, and instruct the model to say when the retrieved evidence is insufficient. Google’s long-context guidance discusses RAG’s historical role and context caching for repeated high-input workloads; these are complementary tools rather than mutually exclusive choices.
Use staged summarization for oversized archives
For a corpus beyond a practical request budget, process sections in parallel, preserve quotations and identifiers in each intermediate result, then ask a second pass to compare those results. Keep the original files available for verification because a summary is not a substitute for source evidence.

Decision guide by priority
Choose Gemini when managed multimodal ingestion is the priority
Select Gemini when you want a hosted workflow for very large or mixed-format inputs and expect to revisit the same material. Its documented 1M-plus context range and context-caching path are especially relevant to repeated analysis. Confirm the current model, cache semantics, quotas, retention and regional availability.
Choose Claude when you want a managed 1M-context workflow
Choose Claude when a hosted API, a documented 1M-token context and long-document or codebase analysis are the main requirements. Validate request-size limits with your actual files and check whether the desired model and access tier are available through your chosen channel.
Choose Llama 4 Scout when deployment control outweighs operating effort
Choose Scout when open weights, data residency, customization or a 10M-token architectural maximum justify running the serving stack yourself or through a hosting partner. Include hardware, licensing, security updates, observability and on-call ownership in the decision, not just GPU purchase price.
Choose RAG or staged processing when economics dominate
If only a small fraction of the corpus is relevant, if the archive changes daily, or if full-context calls are too slow or expensive, use retrieval or staged processing. A smaller, well-ranked evidence set can outperform a giant undifferentiated prompt.

- Assemble a representative test set. Include clean text, complex tables, scanned pages, images, code, repeated boilerplate and documents with deliberate contradictions. Preserve the questions real users ask.
- Measure single-fact retrieval. Hide questions whose answers occur once, near the beginning, middle and end of a file. Score exactness and whether the answer cites the correct location.
- Test cross-section synthesis. Ask for conclusions that require combining definitions, exceptions and appendices. Mark missing premises, invented links and incorrect precedence.
- Test tables and layout. Compare extracted values, row and column relationships, footnotes and units. A fluent paragraph is not acceptable if the underlying table was misread.
- Test contradiction handling. Place conflicting versions in the corpus and require the model to identify both, state which is newer when dates support that conclusion, and avoid silently merging them.
- Test citation and quote fidelity. Require file names, page or section identifiers and short quotations. Check every citation against the source rather than trusting plausible-looking references.
- Record operational metrics. Measure upload failures, token and byte limits, time to first token, total latency, output length, retries, concurrency and cost for the exact model and plan.
- Run a production-shaped pilot. Include authentication, logging, redaction, retention, cache behavior, user cancellations and fallback routing. A model that wins an offline test may fail under concurrent traffic or strict governance requirements.
Document ingestion details that change the result
- Native PDFs: Determine whether the provider preserves page boundaries, reading order, hyperlinks and footnotes. Ask for page-level evidence when answers must be auditable.
- Scanned PDFs: OCR quality becomes part of model quality. Test handwriting, skewed pages, stamps, multi-column layouts and low-contrast scans separately.
- Tables: Preserve headers, units and merged-cell relationships. If extraction flattens a table, the model may produce a confident but wrong comparison.
- Images and diagrams: Verify that the selected model and endpoint accept visual input and that diagrams are interpreted at the resolution your files provide.
- Code repositories: Keep file paths, symbols and version identifiers in the prompt or retrieved chunks. Test whether the model can trace a definition across modules without confusing similarly named files.
- Audio and other media: Confirm modality support and any separate duration or size limits; a token window alone does not establish that every media type is accepted.
Cost, latency, governance and deployment trade-offs
Compare more than input-token price. A fair estimate includes output tokens, cache reads and writes, file storage, embedding and retrieval costs, retries, concurrency reservations, data transfer and engineering time. For Scout or another self-hosted model, add GPUs, memory, power, orchestration, monitoring, upgrades and incident response.
Best Value
Latency often rises with input length, even when a provider accepts the request. Decide whether users need an interactive answer or can wait for an asynchronous job. For recurring analysis, cache stable instructions and source material where supported, but verify cache expiration, invalidation and billing behavior.
Governance requirements can reverse a model ranking. Review where files are processed, how long prompts and outputs are retained, who can access logs, whether customer-managed keys are supported and how deletion requests propagate. Managed APIs reduce infrastructure work; open-weight deployment increases control but transfers security and reliability responsibility to your team or hosting partner.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| The upload is rejected even though the token count appears below the model maximum | Byte, file-count, endpoint or account request limit | Check the exact model’s request documentation, reduce attachment overhead, split the corpus or use staged processing |
| The answer cites a nearby passage but misses the decisive exception | Retrieval or attention failure in a long sequence | Require evidence quotes, run targeted retrieval, and test exception-focused questions |
| Tables are summarized with incorrect totals or units | Layout loss during extraction or visual misinterpretation | Preserve table structure, provide page references and validate values with deterministic checks |
| Different runs produce incompatible conclusions | Ambiguous instructions, conflicting source versions or sampling variation | Identify source precedence, require a conflict report and use deterministic settings where available |
| Interactive requests time out | Large input, long generation or overloaded serving capacity | Use asynchronous jobs, shorter retrieved context, caching, batching or a smaller specialist model |
| Self-hosted Scout cannot meet throughput targets | Insufficient memory, batching or serving optimization | Benchmark the intended quantization and concurrency on production-like hardware before launch |
Architectures that work in practice
Single-book research assistant
Upload the book once, retain page and chapter metadata, and use a long-context Gemini or Claude workflow for questions requiring comparisons across chapters. For simple lookups, route to a retriever to reduce latency. Require quotations for every nontrivial answer.
Enterprise policy and contract analysis
Index documents with version and effective-date metadata. Use RAG for routine clause searches, then invoke a full-context model only when the task requires reconciling multiple agreements or finding exceptions across the collection. Keep originals immutable and log the evidence passages returned to the user.
Private research archive
Evaluate Llama 4 Scout when residency or customization rules prohibit sending files to a managed API. Start with a representative subset, measure memory and concurrency, and keep a managed fallback only if policy permits. Do not infer production capacity from the 10M-token maximum alone.
Repeated monthly reporting
Use caching for stable source material where supported, then run a staged extraction that produces structured facts before a final narrative pass. This limits repeated input movement and makes changes between reporting periods easier to audit.
Bottom line
Gemini is the leading managed starting point for very large, multimodal and repeatedly accessed document sets; Claude is a strong managed alternative with a documented 1M-token context; and Llama 4 Scout offers the largest documented window and the most deployment control at the cost of operating an open-weight stack. Select the model only after measuring effective context, retrieval, citations, latency, cost and governance on your own documents. When a whole-corpus prompt is inefficient or unreliable, combine RAG, caching and staged processing instead of treating a larger context number as a universal solution.
