The best alternative depends on the battery system you are prepared to own for years. A bare tool is a one-time purchase; batteries and chargers are the long-term switching cost. For a homeowner building an outdoor collection, Ryobi 40V is the most practical starting point to investigate, with Greenworks 60V as another outdoor-first option. DeWalt 20V MAX/60V FLEXVOLT and Milwaukee M18 make more sense when construction tools must share an ecosystem with yard equipment. Makita is compelling for users already invested in its professional platform.
That answers the questions most buyers are really asking: “What is the best alternative to EGO/FLEX/SKIL?”, “Which cordless tool battery platform should I buy?”, “Are Ryobi or DeWalt better than EGO?”, and “Can one battery run all my tools?” There is no universal winner. The right choice is the platform that covers your dominant work, has the exact tools you need in your region, and offers batteries, chargers, service and replacement parts you can continue to obtain.

Quick verdict: which platform fits which buyer?
| Platform | Best fit | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Ryobi 40V | Homeowners prioritising a broad outdoor range and easy availability | Exact mower, blower, trimmer or chainsaw model; current kit price; local battery and service supply |
| Greenworks 60V | Outdoor-first users comparing high-voltage mower and snow-tool options | Regional range, dealer support, battery availability and service network |
| DeWalt 20V MAX/60V FLEXVOLT | People who need construction hand tools plus higher-power outdoor equipment | Whether the specific tool accepts 20V MAX, FLEXVOLT or both, and which battery sizes it requires |
| Milwaukee M18 | Trade users wanting a deep professional hand-tool catalogue with cordless outdoor products | The exact M18 outdoor tool, required battery and local availability |
| Makita 18V LXT/XGT | Users committed to Makita ergonomics and professional tools | 18V LXT and 40V XGT are separate families unless a tool explicitly states otherwise |
| EGO POWER+ 56V | Outdoor specialists who want one high-power EGO battery family | Tool weight, battery size, charger speed and local service |
| FLEX 24V | Professional tradespeople focused on FLEX hand tools | Registration requirements for the five-year limited warranty and the outdoor tools available locally |
| SKIL PWRCORE | DIY buyers seeking a lower-complexity system with USB-C convenience | Choose the correct PWRCORE 12, 20 or 40 family; they are separate systems |
This is a platform-fit guide, not a universal performance ranking. Consumer Reports’ battery-platform coverage, updated July 23, 2026, explains why interchangeable batteries can save money and why higher-voltage systems are commonly used for demanding loads such as snow blowers. The cited coverage describes comparative testing but does not provide a complete cross-brand score table, so model-level testing remains essential.
Why the battery platform matters more than the first tool
Once you own two or three batteries, changing brands means buying a new charger and rebuilding your battery stock. A cheap bare tool can therefore become expensive if it starts a second, incompatible ecosystem. Evaluate the starter kit, a likely second battery, charger capability and the price of future bare tools together.
#1 Best Overall

Cross-compatibility is always bounded
“18V,” “20V” and “40V” are platform labels, not universal standards. A battery fits only tools designed for its mechanical connector, electronics and voltage family. Even within one brand, a high-output pack may be required for a saw, mower or blower, while a compact pack is preferable on a drill. Never assume that a battery with a similar voltage will work.
Capacity affects runtime and weight
Amp-hour (Ah) capacity indicates how much energy a pack stores, but runtime depends on the tool, material, temperature, cutting load and control settings. A larger pack generally runs longer and weighs more. A mower may benefit from multiple high-capacity packs; a drill or impact driver may feel better with a compact pack.
Chargers are part of the system
One slow charger can become a bottleneck when several tools share batteries. Check whether a kit includes a standard, rapid or dual-port charger, how many packs you expect to rotate and whether the charger is sold separately in your market.

The three reference ecosystems: EGO, FLEX and SKIL
EGO POWER+: a single 56V outdoor family
EGO positions its Power+, Professional and Pro X ranges around the same 56V ARC Lithium battery family. EGO’s technology pages state that “Our industry-leading 56V ARC Lithium™ battery works with all EGO POWER+ tools.” The company also describes its ARC Lithium technology as combining with ergonomic design for performance. In practical terms, EGO is strongest when your priority is lawn and garden equipment and you want one high-voltage family rather than a mix of low-voltage handheld packs.
Keep EGO in contention if your shortlist includes a mower, snow blower, large blower, trimmer and chainsaw and you value a consistent 56V architecture. Compare the installed battery weight, deck size, cutting width, noise, charger arrangement and local replacement-pack cost for each exact model. The battery family does not remove the need to compare those tool-level differences.
FLEX: a professional 24V trade platform
FLEX describes its 24V Lithium platform as cross-compatible across tools, batteries and chargers. Its official platform wording says, “FLEX Stacked Lithium battery technology delivers power that changes everything – and it’s 100% cross-compatible with all FLEX 24V tools and chargers.” FLEX also advertises a five-year limited warranty when registration requirements are met.
FLEX is a logical reference point for professional tradespeople whose main purchases are drills, impact drivers, saws, grinders and other site tools. If outdoor equipment is part of your plan, verify the exact FLEX model and battery requirement rather than assuming every 24V pack is ideal for every high-load machine. Complete the warranty registration steps on time and retain proof of purchase.

SKIL: three separate PWRCORE systems
SKIL separates its cordless products into PWRCORE 12, PWRCORE 20 and PWRCORE 40. SKIL states that every battery powers tools within the same PWRCORE system; PWRCORE 12 and PWRCORE 20 also support two-way USB-C charging, while PWRCORE 40 targets lawn and garden work.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The important buying decision is choosing the tier before accumulating tools. A PWRCORE 20 battery is not a general-purpose substitute for PWRCORE 40 outdoor equipment. USB-C charging can be convenient for compact DIY tools and travel, but compare charging time, pack capacity and the availability of the exact outdoor tool you need.
Alternative 1: Ryobi 40V for a homeowner outdoor collection
Ryobi 40V is the strongest starting point for many homeowners who want a broad outdoor range and frequent tool availability. The recommendation is about platform fit, not a claim that every Ryobi mower outperforms every EGO, Greenworks or other mower. Check the exact model, battery capacity, deck configuration and current local price.
Why it suits homeowners
- A broad 40V outdoor catalogue can cover mowing, trimming, blowing, chainsaw work and other seasonal jobs.
- Common retail availability can make it easier to find a replacement battery or an additional bare tool.
- A single outdoor family avoids mixing a high-voltage mower brand with a separate trimmer and blower platform.
Where to be careful
“Ryobi 40V” does not specify one mower or one performance level. Compare brushless and brushed motors, cutting width, self-propelled drive, included battery size, charger type and warranty terms for the exact kit. If you also need construction tools, confirm whether the separate Ryobi 18V ONE+ family covers those needs; do not assume a 40V pack fits it.
For readers shopping specifically for a broad outdoor ecosystem, the useful search category is Ryobi 40V cordless outdoor power tools. Choose by yard size and task, not by the battery voltage printed on the box alone.
Alternative 2: DeWalt 20V MAX and 60V FLEXVOLT for mixed work
DeWalt is a strong candidate when one brand must cover construction hand tools and higher-power outdoor equipment. The 20V MAX family addresses common drills, impacts, saws and site accessories; FLEXVOLT packs and compatible tools extend into more demanding applications. Compatibility is model-specific, so check the tool label and manual before pairing a pack.
Why mixed-use owners choose it
- A mature professional hand-tool catalogue can reduce the need for a second trade platform.
- Higher-power outdoor tools can share the broader DeWalt investment when the model is designed for the relevant battery family.
- Users who already own DeWalt batteries avoid immediately buying a new charger and starter pack.
Compatibility checks
Do not treat “20V MAX/60V FLEXVOLT” as one interchangeable voltage. Some FLEXVOLT batteries can change electrical configuration for compatible tools, while a specific 20V MAX tool may not accept every pack or may be unnecessarily heavy with a large pack. Confirm the tool’s listed battery requirement, the included charger and whether a two-battery setup is required.
Alternative 3: Milwaukee M18 for professional hand tools plus outdoor work
Milwaukee M18 is a candidate for trade users who value a deep professional hand-tool catalogue and want cordless outdoor products in the same broad ecosystem. It is particularly attractive when your daily work is driven by impacts, drills, saws, lighting, storage and specialty trade tools, with outdoor equipment as a secondary need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStrengths
- A broad M18 catalogue can support a specialised trade workflow without adding another hand-tool battery family.
- Outdoor products can be evaluated alongside the same charger and battery inventory.
- Professional users can prioritise tool ergonomics, controls and service support for their trade.
What must be verified
The M18 name alone does not tell you the required capacity or whether a particular outdoor product is sold in your region. Check the exact mower, trimmer, blower or chainsaw, recommended battery, kit contents and replacement-pack availability. For sustained outdoor loads, a compact hand-tool battery may deliver less useful runtime than a high-output pack.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Alternative 4: Makita 18V LXT and 40V XGT
Makita suits buyers who value professional ergonomics, a large catalogue and an existing Makita investment. The crucial distinction is that 18V LXT and 40V XGT are separate families unless a specific tool states otherwise. An LXT charger and battery should not be assumed to operate an XGT tool.
Choose LXT when
Your collection centres on compact drills, impacts, reciprocating saws, lights and other tools where a lighter 18V pack is useful. Confirm whether the outdoor tool you want is an LXT model, requires two 18V batteries, or belongs to another family.
Choose XGT when
You need a dedicated higher-power professional system for demanding outdoor or construction applications and are willing to buy its batteries and charger separately from LXT. Compare the complete XGT starter cost with the number of tools you expect to add.
Alternative 5: Greenworks 60V for outdoor-first buyers
Greenworks 60V is worth comparing with EGO 56V when lawn and seasonal outdoor equipment are the centre of your purchases. A 60V label does not establish superiority over a 56V system; mower design, motor control, blade speed, battery capacity, deck and conditions determine the result.
Where it can fit
- Homeowners seeking a dedicated outdoor ecosystem rather than professional construction tools.
- Buyers comparing mower and snow-tool breadth in areas where both brands have local support.
- Users who can obtain batteries, chargers, blades, line and service without relying on one distant retailer.
Regional qualification
Greenworks product names, voltage offerings and warranty terms vary by market. Before committing, list the exact tools for your yard, check that they are sold locally, and verify replacement battery and parts channels. If a snow blower or mower is essential, confirm its seasonal availability rather than relying on a catalogue page for another country.
Compare platforms on the criteria that change ownership cost
| Criterion | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Task coverage | Is the system outdoor-only, mixed DIY or professional trade focused? | A platform that lacks your essential tool forces a second battery family. |
| Battery architecture | What voltage family, Ah sizes and high-output packs are offered? | Determines tool compatibility, runtime potential, weight and future upgrade choices. |
| Charger speed | Is the kit charger standard, rapid, dual-port or USB-C? | Charging time affects how many batteries you need in rotation. |
| Exact tool breadth | Can you buy the specific mower, drill, saw, blower or specialty tool? | A large catalogue is irrelevant if your required model is unavailable locally. |
| Power and runtime | What battery does the manufacturer specify, and what load will it face? | Voltage alone cannot predict runtime or cutting performance. |
| Ergonomics and noise | What is the tool’s weight with battery installed, balance and control layout? | Comfort and manoeuvrability affect real use more than a bare-tool specification. |
| Warranty and service | Is registration required, and where are repairs and parts handled? | A warranty is useful only when its conditions and local support are workable. |
| Total cost | What do the starter kit, second battery, charger and consumables cost? | Comparing bare-tool prices hides the cost of establishing the platform. |
| Regional availability | Do model names, voltages and warranty terms match your country? | Cross-border listings may not have compatible chargers, support or returns. |
How to choose your platform step by step
- List your next five tools. Include the primary machine, such as a mower or drill, plus the tools you expect within two years. Mark each as outdoor, DIY or professional trade equipment.
- Identify the dominant workload. If most items are mower, blower, trimmer and chainsaw, start with an outdoor platform. If most are drills, impacts, saws and grinders, start with a trade platform and add outdoor tools only when the exact models meet your needs.
- Check model-level compatibility. For every candidate, record the battery family, required voltage, recommended Ah range, included charger and whether one or two batteries are needed.
- Price the complete first year. Add the starter kit, a likely second battery, charger upgrades, blades, line, chains and storage. A bare-tool deal is meaningful only if it fits batteries you already own.
- Inspect local support. Confirm warranty registration, repair locations, parts ordering, battery returns and seasonal stock. Ask how long a replacement battery normally remains available in your market.
- Compare installed weight and controls. Visit a retailer when possible or read the full specification for weight with battery, not the bare-tool figure. Balance matters when trimming, blowing or using a chainsaw at shoulder height.
- Buy the first battery deliberately. Choose capacity for the heaviest task you actually perform, while keeping a smaller pack for handheld tools if the platform offers one.
- Recheck before expanding. Product lines change. Verify the current manual and compatibility statement before every major purchase, especially when crossing from one voltage family to another.
Power, runtime and noise: what the numbers do and do not tell you
Higher voltage generally allows a system to supply more power to demanding tools, which is why Consumer Reports describes higher-voltage batteries as common on power-hungry equipment such as snow blowers. It does not guarantee longer runtime. Runtime is a relationship between stored energy, motor efficiency, load, speed setting and conditions.
For a mower, compare deck width, self-propelled use, grass height, battery count and whether the manufacturer specifies a particular pack. For a blower, note air volume and air speed alongside trigger control and noise. For a chainsaw, compare bar length, oiling system, chain availability and the battery recommended for sustained cutting. Do not convert a voltage label into an invented minutes-per-charge figure.
Noise and ergonomics are similarly model-specific. Two tools using the same battery family can have different balance, vibration, handle geometry and sound. A lighter battery may make a trimmer easier to control, while a heavier high-capacity pack may be preferable for a long mowing session.

Warranty, service and consumables
Read the warranty conditions before choosing a platform. FLEX advertises a five-year limited warranty when registration requirements are met; that is a conditional term, not an automatic five-year promise for every buyer. Complete registration within the stated period and save the receipt.
For every brand, check who handles battery failures, whether diagnostic or shipping fees apply, and whether local repair centres stock common parts. Outdoor ownership also includes mower blades, trimmer line, chains, bars and filters. Confirm that those consumables are sold through dependable channels before buying a machine that will be difficult to maintain.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by voltage alone
A 60V product is not automatically better than a 56V product, and a 20V tool is not automatically weaker for every task. Compare the complete tool design, battery capacity, controls and manufacturer requirements.

Separate families such as SKIL PWRCORE 12, 20 and 40, or Makita LXT and XGT, require separate checks. Read the compatibility statement on the tool and charger, not just the brand name.
Ignoring the charger
A kit that includes one slow charger may leave two expensive batteries waiting between jobs. Budget for a faster or second charger if your work schedule requires continuous use.
Buying a mower before checking the rest of the range
The mower may be excellent while the trimmer or chainsaw you want is unavailable in your region. Build the tool list first, then select the platform that covers it.
Comparing bare-tool prices
A bare tool is only a bargain when you already own compatible batteries and a charger. Otherwise compare a complete kit and the next battery you are likely to buy.

Which platform should you buy?
Choose Ryobi 40V when a homeowner-friendly outdoor range and easy availability are the priority. Choose Greenworks 60V when an outdoor-first alternative has better local mower or snow-tool coverage. Choose DeWalt when construction tools and higher-power outdoor equipment must share one investment. Choose Milwaukee M18 when professional hand tools dominate and outdoor capability is useful. Choose Makita when you are already committed to its ergonomics and can decide deliberately between LXT and XGT.
EGO remains a strong choice for high-power outdoor equipment built around one 56V ARC Lithium family. FLEX remains relevant when professional 24V trade tools are the priority, particularly if you will meet its warranty-registration requirements. SKIL remains sensible for buyers who value a compact DIY and outdoor mix, lower-complexity entry and USB-C convenience within the appropriate PWRCORE tier.
Before checkout, write down the exact model numbers, battery family, included pack, charger type, warranty conditions and local service contact. That short checklist is more reliable than any universal brand ranking because cordless tools are ecosystems, not isolated purchases.

Can one battery run all cordless tools from different brands?
No. Batteries are generally limited to the manufacturer’s specified family and connector. Similar voltage labels do not make batteries interchangeable, and adapters can create safety, warranty and electronic-communication risks.
Are Ryobi or DeWalt better than EGO?
Neither is universally better. Ryobi is often the more natural fit for a broad homeowner outdoor range, DeWalt for mixed construction and outdoor work, and EGO for a dedicated 56V outdoor ecosystem. Compare the exact models and local support for your tasks.
Do I need the largest battery available?
Not always. A high-capacity pack can extend runtime but adds weight and cost. Use the battery size recommended for the tool and workload, keeping smaller packs for handheld tools when the platform supports them.
Is Makita 18V LXT compatible with 40V XGT?
They are separate battery families unless a specific Makita tool explicitly states cross-compatibility. Plan on separate batteries and chargers when building across both systems.
