There is no single drop-in replacement for CUDA-X. For a CUDA-oriented C++ application that must run on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, start with HIP. For a modern C++ codebase spanning CPUs and GPUs from several vendors, evaluate SYCL. For HPC teams that want to separate algorithms from execution and memory backends, use Kokkos. For incremental acceleration of existing C, C++ or Fortran code, OpenMP offload or OpenACC usually requires the least kernel rewriting. OpenCL and Vulkan compute remain useful for specialized device or graphics requirements.

Choose after benchmarking representative kernels and complete application workflows. Published comparisons show that the fastest portable model changes with the workload, compiler, device and implementation.

A portable migration therefore has two parts: moving kernel and memory-management code to another model, then finding suitable implementations for specialized functions such as linear algebra, collectives, random numbers or domain-specific solvers. A project can use more than one model—for example, HIP for a small set of performance-critical kernels and a directive model for the rest—provided the build, debugging and data-ownership rules remain clear.

Portable GPU programming models compared

Option Best fit Hardware reach Abstraction and control CUDA migration effort Main caution
HIP Existing CUDA-style C++ targeting AMD, NVIDIA or both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs; host C++ execution Low-level kernels, queues, memory and launches with a CUDA-like model Usually the most direct route Audit CUDA libraries, extensions and compiler assumptions; HIP API 7.0 is incompatible with earlier releases
SYCL One modern C++ source base for heterogeneous CPUs and GPUs Multiple CPU and GPU vendors through implementations such as Intel oneAPI DPC++, AdaptiveCpp, triSYCL and ComputeCpp Modern C++ abstractions with implementation-dependent control Medium to high, depending on kernel style and libraries Compiler, runtime and library behavior differs between implementations
Kokkos HPC and scientific applications needing stable algorithm code and selectable backends CUDA, HIP, SYCL, HPX, OpenMP and C++ threads Higher-level execution-space and data-layout abstractions Refactoring is required, but later backend changes can be cheaper Abstraction choices still need backend-specific tuning
OpenMP offload Incremental acceleration in C, C++ or Fortran Depends on compiler and target support Directives hide much launch and data movement code Low to medium for loop-oriented applications Less explicit control and compiler-specific tuning may be necessary
OpenACC Directive-based modernization of an existing application Portable across supported operating systems, host CPUs and accelerator types Pragmas/directives express parallel regions and data lifetimes Low to medium when loops are regular Performance depends heavily on compiler analysis and data-region design
OpenCL Broad device coverage with an established OpenCL stack Heterogeneous devices supported by the chosen implementation Low-level kernels and explicit runtime management Often substantial for CUDA code More verbose runtime and device-management code
Vulkan compute Compute integrated with a cross-platform graphics or rendering stack Devices exposing suitable Vulkan compute capabilities Explicit, graphics-oriented command and resource model High for general CUDA applications Not the default HPC replacement; specialized tooling and design are required

HIP: the closest CUDA migration path

HIP is AMD’s C++ runtime API and kernel language designed to simplify porting NVIDIA CUDA applications to AMD GPUs while retaining a familiar programming style. AMD describes it as a way to simplify CUDA porting, maintain performance and provide a familiar C++ experience.

When HIP is the right choice

  • Your code already uses CUDA-style kernels, streams, events, device memory and synchronization.
  • You need deployments on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs and want to preserve much of the existing kernel structure.
  • Your team is comfortable auditing compiler flags, intrinsics and vendor libraries rather than adopting a higher-level abstraction.

HIP is particularly attractive when the application’s portability requirement is primarily AMD-versus-NVIDIA GPU portability. It does not make CUDA-X libraries portable by itself. A migration must identify every call into math, communication, graph, random-number or domain-specific libraries and select an equivalent implementation, a portable wrapper or a separately maintained backend.

What to audit before converting

  • CUDA-specific language extensions, inline assembly, warp or subgroup assumptions and architecture-specific intrinsics.
  • Compiler options, generated-code assumptions and code that relies on a particular CUDA toolchain version.
  • Library calls and data types that have no direct HIP equivalent.
  • Build scripts, CI images, profiling tools and deployment containers tied to one vendor.

HIP’s API 7.0 changes are incompatible with earlier releases and may require recompilation. Pin the compiler, runtime and dependent libraries in reproducible environments, then test upgrades as deliberate migrations rather than casual package updates.

HIP trade-offs

The benefit is a relatively familiar low-level model and a potentially smaller first rewrite. The cost is that portability remains visible in the code: conditional compilation, backend-specific intrinsics and library selection may still be needed. Teams should resist declaring success after the kernels compile. Check numerical results, synchronization behavior, memory allocation, error handling and performance on both target vendors.

SYCL: modern heterogeneous C++ across vendors

SYCL is a modern C++ heterogeneous programming model for expressing work across CPUs and GPUs. Implementations include Intel oneAPI DPC++, AdaptiveCpp, triSYCL and ComputeCpp. It is a strong candidate when the long-term goal is one C++ source base that can target several kinds of processors rather than a narrow CUDA-to-AMD translation.

When SYCL fits

  • The application is being redesigned or already uses modern C++ abstractions.
  • CPU execution is a first-class target, not merely a fallback.
  • The team can standardize on one SYCL implementation or maintain a tested matrix of implementations.
  • You want portable queues, buffers or unified data-management concepts instead of directly exposing every vendor runtime detail.

SYCL portability is an engineering commitment, not a guarantee that every implementation behaves identically. Device support, compiler diagnostics, library coverage, subgroup behavior and optimization quality can differ. Select the implementation and hardware targets early, and compile representative kernels continuously on each supported combination.

Moving CUDA kernels to SYCL

Begin with kernels whose data dependencies and synchronization are well understood. Replace explicit CUDA launch syntax with SYCL command-group and kernel submission patterns, then map thread and block assumptions to the execution model used by the selected implementation. Revisit algorithms that depend on warp width, cooperative groups or vendor-specific intrinsics; a textual translation can compile while changing synchronization or memory-order semantics.

Specialized CUDA-X libraries require separate decisions. Keep a small portability interface in application code so that a vendor-optimized implementation can coexist with a portable fallback without scattering conditional compilation through every caller.

Kokkos: backend-neutral execution and data management

Kokkos Core provides a C++ performance-portability model that separates parallel execution and data management from application algorithms. Its documented backends include CUDA, HIP, SYCL, HPX, OpenMP and C++ threads. That range makes Kokkos a strong fit for HPC and scientific teams that expect to move between accelerators and CPUs over the life of a codebase.

Why teams choose Kokkos

  • Execution spaces let an algorithm target a selected backend without embedding every launch detail in business or scientific logic.
  • Data views and layouts make memory placement and access patterns explicit while keeping them separate from most algorithm code.
  • The same source can be built for GPU and host backends, supporting CPU-only development and testing.

Kokkos is not a zero-effort wrapper around existing CUDA kernels. You normally refactor parallel regions, data containers and reductions into Kokkos concepts. That work can be substantial at the start, but it can reduce the cost of later backend changes when the abstraction is applied consistently.

Backend details that matter

Kokkos documents CUDA, HIP and SYCL device backends as well as HPX, OpenMP and C++ threads for host or task-oriented execution. Its execution-space documentation notes that the SYCL backend can use just-in-time compilation when no GPU architecture is specified. Build and deployment plans should therefore make architecture selection explicit where startup latency, reproducibility or production packaging matters.

Higher-level code does not remove the need for performance work. View layout, memory space, execution policy, reduction strategy and kernel fusion still affect results. Profile the generated application on every backend instead of assuming that one policy is optimal everywhere.

OpenMP offload and OpenACC: incremental acceleration with directives

Directive models are often the practical choice for an established C, C++ or Fortran application whose loops are understandable but whose team does not want to rewrite every kernel and memory operation. OpenMP offload and OpenACC let developers annotate parallel regions, loops and data lifetimes while the compiler generates accelerator code.

OpenMP offload

OpenMP is attractive when the project already uses OpenMP on CPUs or wants one directive standard for host threading and device offload. The amount of control is lower than in a hand-written HIP or CUDA kernel, but a well-designed data environment can eliminate repeated transfers and leave the application easier to maintain.

OpenACC

OpenACC is designed for directive-based accelerator programming and is documented as portable across operating systems, host CPUs and accelerator types supported by the compiler. It can be effective for loop nests in legacy scientific and engineering programs, especially when Fortran remains important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA’s HPC compiler documentation provides compiler switches for OpenACC, OpenMP GPU offload, standard-parallelism offload and CUDA. The exact switch, feature set and generated code depend on the compiler release and target. Treat compiler selection as part of the portability design, not as an implementation detail hidden from the build system.

When directives are not enough

Irregular synchronization, fine-grained shared-memory algorithms, custom warp-level operations and tightly tuned memory traffic may need explicit kernels or a lower-level backend. A common compromise is to use directives for regular bulk loops and isolate a small number of critical kernels in HIP, SYCL or another specialized layer.

OpenCL and Vulkan compute: specialized alternatives

OpenCL

OpenCL remains relevant when broad device coverage and an established OpenCL software stack are more important than a CUDA-like migration experience. It exposes kernels and runtime operations at a relatively low level, so teams should expect explicit device discovery, queues, memory transfers, synchronization and program management. Existing OpenCL expertise or a product requirement for a particular device family can justify that cost; a new HPC project should compare it directly with SYCL, Kokkos and directive models before committing.

Vulkan compute

Vulkan compute is most compelling when computation must share resources, synchronization and deployment with a cross-platform graphics or rendering pipeline. Its command-buffer and resource model is powerful but graphics-oriented. For a conventional scientific or machine-learning application with no rendering requirement, Vulkan usually introduces more specialized infrastructure than a dedicated HPC portability model.

How to choose among HIP, SYCL, Kokkos and directives

Use the following decision sequence rather than selecting by marketing claims or a single benchmark.

  1. Define the hardware matrix. List the exact AMD and NVIDIA GPU generations, CPU targets, operating systems and deployment environments that must be supported. A model that is portable in principle may lack a mature compiler, library or profiler for one required device.
  2. Measure the size of the CUDA surface. Count kernels, runtime calls, memory operations, compiler extensions and CUDA-X library dependencies. A small number of regular loops favors directives; heavily tuned CUDA C++ favors HIP; a broad architectural rewrite may justify SYCL or Kokkos.
  3. Choose the abstraction level. Select HIP or OpenCL for direct control, SYCL for modern C++ heterogeneous programming, Kokkos for execution and data abstraction, and OpenMP or OpenACC when source-level directives are the priority.
  4. Check team and toolchain capability. Include compiler diagnostics, debuggers, profilers, build engineers and library maintainers in the decision. Portability that only one specialist can maintain is operationally fragile.
  5. Prototype one representative path. Port a kernel that includes realistic memory traffic and synchronization, then connect it to the surrounding application. A toy vector-add benchmark cannot reveal library gaps, transfer overhead or integration cost.
  6. Benchmark end to end. Compare complete workflows as well as kernels. Include initialization, host-device transfers, preprocessing, library calls, synchronization and result collection.

A practical CUDA migration workflow

  1. Inventory dependencies and behavior. Record every CUDA runtime call, library entry point, custom extension, compiler flag, data type, synchronization point and architecture assumption. Mark which items are performance-critical and which are merely convenient.
  2. Freeze a correctness baseline. Save representative inputs, tolerances, output checksums or domain-level validation results, and timing from the current implementation. Include difficult sizes and failure cases, not only a best-case demo.
  3. Build a portability layer. Keep allocation, stream or queue creation, error handling and common math operations behind narrow interfaces. This makes a second backend possible without duplicating application logic.
  4. Port the simplest kernel first. Choose a kernel with known outputs and meaningful memory behavior. Confirm launch geometry, indexing, bounds checks and synchronization before optimizing.
  5. Replace data movement deliberately. Map allocations, copies, asynchronous operations and lifetime rules. Hidden transfers can erase the benefit of a fast kernel, especially when directive data regions or SYCL buffers are configured conservatively.
  6. Handle specialized libraries separately. For each CUDA-X dependency, choose a portable library, a HIP/SYCL/Kokkos backend, a vendor-specific implementation behind an interface or a rewritten algorithm. Do not silently substitute a function with different precision or mathematical semantics.
  7. Run cross-device validation. Compare outputs within documented tolerances on every required backend. Differences can arise from floating-point order, fused operations, atomics and reduction trees even when the algorithm is nominally identical.
  8. Profile before tuning. Identify transfer time, occupancy, memory bandwidth, synchronization stalls, compilation overhead and library costs. Apply backend-specific tuning only after the dominant bottleneck is known.
  9. Automate the matrix. Keep compiler, runtime, backend and architecture combinations in continuous integration where hardware access permits. Pin versions, especially when upgrading HIP or a SYCL implementation.

What performance evidence says

A 2025 study titled Taking GPU Programming Models to Task for Performance Portability evaluated CUDA, HIP, Kokkos, RAJA, OpenMP, OpenACC and SYCL across 25 application/system pairs. It reported SYCL as the fastest non-native programming model in 11 of those 25 pairs, including six cases on AMD systems. The same study reported Kokkos and RAJA at or above native performance on every combination except specified CloverLeaf and miniBUDE cases.

Those results do not establish a universal ranking. They demonstrate why the benchmark must include the application, implementation, compiler and hardware you actually intend to ship. A model that wins a computational kernel may lose after data transfers, initialization, library calls or synchronization are included.

Designing a useful benchmark

  • Use production-shaped problem sizes and include both small and large workloads.
  • Report kernel time and end-to-end time separately.
  • Measure host-device transfers, synchronization, memory footprint and startup or compilation overhead where they affect the product.
  • Record compiler, runtime, backend, driver and GPU details with every result.
  • Repeat runs and report variability rather than presenting a single favorable timing.
  • Verify numerical or scientific correctness before comparing speed.

Common portability failures and fixes

Assuming source translation equals portability

A converted kernel can compile while relying on a vendor-specific intrinsic, warp size or memory-order assumption. Replace implicit assumptions with documented contracts or backend-specific implementations selected behind a common interface.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring library availability

Applications often spend more time in CUDA-X libraries than in custom kernels. Create a dependency map before selecting a model, and budget engineering time for replacements, wrappers and validation.

Leaving data movement implicit

Repeated copies between host and device can dominate runtime. Define ownership and lifetime for major arrays, use persistent data regions or queues where appropriate, and profile transfers rather than inferring them from source code.

Pinning neither compiler nor backend version

Compiler updates can change diagnostics, generated code and supported features. Reproducible builds and a tested upgrade process are especially important for HIP API 7.0, whose changes are incompatible with earlier releases.

Optimizing one device too early

Architecture-specific tuning can improve one GPU while harming another. Establish a portable baseline, measure each target, and isolate specialized paths so that they do not dictate the entire code structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing only microbenchmarks

Vector addition or a single stencil does not represent an application with preprocessing, reductions, communication and library calls. Use a workload ladder: kernel, subsystem and complete workflow.

Underestimating team skills

Portability requires knowledge of compilers, memory models, profiling and numerical validation in addition to API syntax. Include training and maintenance ownership in the selection criteria.

Recommended strategy by migration stage

For an urgent AMD port of an established CUDA application, begin with HIP and isolate the CUDA-X library dependencies that need separate treatment. For a new multi-vendor C++ platform, prototype both SYCL and Kokkos on the same workload; choose SYCL when direct heterogeneous C++ control is central, and Kokkos when stable execution and data abstractions across many backends are more valuable. For a mature Fortran or loop-oriented codebase, test OpenMP offload and OpenACC before undertaking a kernel rewrite. Keep OpenCL or Vulkan compute for requirements that specifically favor their device or graphics ecosystems.

In every case, make the decision from measured end-to-end behavior, supported toolchains and maintainable code—not from a claim that one programming model is always fastest.
