Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most hosted applications, start by testing Gemini 2.5 Flash. Google positions it for low-latency, high-volume tasks that still need reasoning, which matches routing, extraction, summarization, classification and short agent steps. Choose Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite when throughput and unit cost matter more than reasoning depth. Choose Mistral Small 4 when Apache 2.0 licensing, open-weight deployment or control over hosting is more important than using a fully managed API. OpenAI and DeepSeek remain candidates, but the currently available information does not support a reliable cost ranking for them.
Claude Haiku 4.5 itself is now labeled a legacy model by Anthropic. That status makes migration timing part of the decision, not just a question of shaving fractions of a cent from token pricing. The practical answer is to benchmark two or three candidates on your own prompts, latency target, error tolerance and deployment requirements before changing production traffic.

Why Gemini 2.5 Flash is the default hosted alternative
Gemini 2.5 Flash is the closest starting point when you want a managed API rather than a self-hosted model. Google explicitly targets low-latency, high-volume tasks that require reasoning. That description maps to workloads in which each request is modest but the request count is large: assigning tickets to queues, extracting fields from documents, summarizing a support thread, selecting a workflow route or completing one short step inside an agent.
Use it for high-volume classification and extraction
Classification and extraction often fail for reasons that token price alone cannot reveal. A model that is slightly cheaper per token can become more expensive if it returns malformed JSON, misses a field or requires a second call. Test Gemini 2.5 Flash with your actual label set, ambiguous examples and longest documents. Track valid-structure rate, field-level accuracy, refusal rate and p95 latency alongside token usage.
Use it for short agent steps
For an agent, the relevant unit is a completed step, not an isolated completion. Include tool-selection accuracy, arguments that pass schema validation, number of retries and time spent waiting for each call. Gemini 2.5 Flash is a sensible first candidate when the agent must reason briefly before calling a tool, but your own tool definitions and error handling determine the result.

When Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite is the better choice
Google describes Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite as the fastest and most budget-friendly multimodal model in the 2.5 family. That makes it the direction to investigate when throughput and unit cost outweigh maximum reasoning depth. Typical uses include first-pass triage, duplicate detection, metadata tagging, simple moderation queues, image-plus-text labeling and other jobs where a lightweight answer is sufficient.
Define the quality boundary before switching
Flash-Lite should not be selected solely because its name implies a lower price. Establish a minimum acceptable score for each critical field or class. Send difficult or low-confidence cases to a stronger model, while letting Flash-Lite handle the large easy majority. This two-stage design can reduce total cost without forcing every request through the most capable model.
Check the model’s lifecycle
Google’s guidance says new projects should consider newer 3.5 Flash-Lite or 3.8 Flash models. Treat that as a lifecycle warning: verify which model identifiers are currently available in your region, what migration path Google provides and whether your SDK supports the selected endpoint. A low price is not useful if the model is about to be replaced or is unavailable where your data must be processed.

When Mistral Small 4 is the better choice
Mistral’s catalog describes Small 4 as an efficient hybrid model that unifies instruction, reasoning and coding. It is listed under the Apache 2.0 license. That combination is attractive when you need open-weight deployment, want to choose your own hosting environment or need to reduce dependence on a single managed provider.

What open deployment changes
Self-hosting replaces an API bill with infrastructure and operations. You must supply suitable accelerators or CPU capacity, a serving stack, autoscaling, observability, patching, access controls and a process for updating model weights. Your effective cost includes idle capacity, storage, engineering time and incident response. Compare that total with the managed alternatives rather than comparing a hosted token rate with hardware rental alone.
Validate hardware and serving behavior
The available model description does not specify a required hardware configuration, context limit, maximum output or guaranteed latency for Small 4. Measure throughput at the concurrency you expect, including warm-up time, batching behavior and memory use. Test quantized and full-precision variants only if the license and distribution terms permit your intended use, and record any quality change on representative prompts.
How to evaluate OpenAI and DeepSeek without overclaiming
OpenAI’s current business page lists several GPT families, including GPT-5 Thinking Mini and newer GPT-5.6 variants, but the available page did not expose a stable, directly comparable small-model API price. A first-party DeepSeek pricing page was found, yet its accessible text did not provide a complete model-price table. Both are reasonable candidates for a second verification pass, not models that can be ranked confidently on current cost from the information available here.

What to verify for either provider
- Exact API model identifier and whether it is generally available or limited to a preview.
- Input and output token prices for standard and batch modes, including cached-token treatment.
- Context and maximum-output limits for the endpoint you will actually call.
- Tool-calling, structured-output and multimodal behavior in your SDK version.
- Regional availability, data-retention terms, rate limits and service-level commitments.
- Deprecation policy and notice period before moving production traffic.
Compare completed-task cost, not just token price
Token rates are only one part of the bill. A cheaper model can lose its advantage if it needs longer prompts, produces verbose outputs, retries failed JSON, or hands many cases to a second model. Calculate cost per successfully completed task using your real traffic mix.

A practical cost formula
For each model, record input tokens, output tokens, successful completions, retries and escalations over the same sample. A simple estimate is:
task cost = (input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate) ÷ 1,000,000 + retry cost + escalation cost
For asynchronous work, calculate a separate batch scenario because Anthropic’s published batch figures are lower than its standard model-page figures. Do not apply the $0.50 input or $2.50 output values to interactive traffic without confirming that the request qualifies for batch processing.
Include operational costs
- Provider charges for input, output, cached tokens or batch jobs.
- Retries caused by timeouts, invalid schemas or transient errors.
- Queueing and orchestration costs for a multi-model route.
- Storage, monitoring and support for self-hosted deployments.
- Human review of low-confidence or failed classifications.
- Migration engineering when a legacy model reaches retirement.
Decision guide by workload
| Your priority | First model to test | Why | What could change the decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed API for many short reasoning calls | Gemini 2.5 Flash | Explicitly positioned for low-latency, high-volume reasoning | Your region’s quota, price or tool-calling behavior |
| Lowest practical unit cost for simple multimodal triage | Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite | Google’s fastest and most budget-oriented 2.5 multimodal option | Quality floor, lifecycle status or escalation rate |
| Open-weight or self-hosted deployment | Mistral Small 4 | Apache 2.0 license and hybrid instruction/reasoning/coding design | Hardware cost, serving latency and operational capacity |
| Existing Anthropic integration with minimal change today | Claude Haiku 4.5, temporarily | Documented 200K context and 64K output with existing provider integrations | Legacy status and your acceptable migration window |
| Potential alternative requiring current price discovery | OpenAI or DeepSeek candidate | Both have relevant model offerings or pricing pages | Complete current rate card, endpoint availability and benchmark results |
Migration plan from Claude Haiku 4.5
- Inventory the current contract. Record the exact model identifier, standard or batch mode, regions, context assumptions, output cap, image-input use, tool schemas and rate limits.
- Build a representative test set. Include normal, borderline and adversarial examples. Preserve the original user input, system instructions, expected structure and any tool results so each model sees equivalent conditions.
- Normalize the interface. Put provider-specific code behind one adapter. Standardize timeout handling, retries, structured-output validation, logging and token accounting before comparing quality.
- Run a blind quality test. Score classification accuracy, extracted-field accuracy, summary completeness, coding-test pass rate, refusal behavior and tool-call validity. Have reviewers judge outputs without seeing the model name when practical.
- Measure latency under load. Capture median and p95 time to first token, full-response latency, throughput and error rate at expected concurrency. A single sequential request is not a capacity test.
- Calculate completed-task cost. Include retries, escalations, batch eligibility, infrastructure and human review. Use the same traffic proportions for every candidate.
- Canary the winner. Route a small percentage of production requests, compare live quality and failure modes, then increase traffic gradually. Keep the old route available for rollback while the canary runs.
- Set a retirement date. Because Haiku 4.5 is labeled legacy, define when you will stop sending new traffic even if the replacement is not the cheapest on paper.
Benchmark dimensions that matter in production
Latency and throughput
Measure time to first token for interactive experiences and full completion time for workflows that cannot stream. Record p50 and p95, not only an average. Test the concurrency level your peak traffic requires; provider throttling can make a fast model appear slow once a quota is reached.
Best Value
Instruction following and reasoning
Use exact production instructions, including long policies, examples and output schemas. Score whether the model follows priority rules, handles conflicting fields and explains or flags uncertainty when the data is incomplete. Do not infer general reasoning quality from a vendor-selected benchmark.
Multimodal behavior
If your application sends images, include the actual formats, resolutions and OCR difficulty. Compare extraction accuracy and latency with text-only requests. A model that is competitive for text classification may behave differently when an image is part of every request.
Tool calling and structured output
Validate arguments against your schema, test unknown or missing fields and simulate tool failures. Count how often a model emits prose instead of the required object, calls the wrong tool or repeats a failed call. These errors create real cost even when the generated text looks fluent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReliability, limits and data handling
Check rate limits, timeout behavior, regional routing, retention controls and incident history relevant to your service. For regulated or contract-sensitive data, confirm where requests are processed and whether logs can be disabled or controlled. A model cannot be considered a replacement until it satisfies those operational constraints.
Common mistakes when replacing Haiku 4.5
- Choosing by advertised price alone. A lower token rate does not account for retries, longer outputs, escalations or self-hosting overhead.
- Ignoring the legacy label. Waiting until a retirement notice arrives leaves little time for evaluation, contract review and a safe rollout.
- Comparing different prompts. Prompt length and formatting can dominate both quality and cost. Keep the task contract equivalent.
- Testing only easy examples. Include ambiguous labels, malformed documents, missing values, long context and tool errors.
- Assuming multimodal parity. Verify image-input support and quality for the exact media your users submit.
- Skipping regional checks. Availability, quotas and prices can vary by region and service mode.
- Self-hosting without a capacity plan. Hardware, autoscaling, patching, monitoring and on-call coverage are part of the model’s total cost.
- Making a permanent switch after a small sample. Run a canary and retain a rollback route until live error rates and user outcomes are stable.
Bottom line
Gemini 2.5 Flash is the strongest first test for a managed, fast and reasoning-capable replacement. Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite is the cost-and-throughput option for simpler multimodal work, while Mistral Small 4 is the flexibility option for teams prepared to own deployment. OpenAI and DeepSeek should remain on the evaluation list until their exact model prices and limits are verified. Since Claude Haiku 4.5 is now legacy, the safest strategy is a measured migration benchmarked on your own tasks rather than a universal winner claim.
