Best Alternatives to ChatGPT for Shopping and Payments

Shopping assistants differ in catalog scope, checkout location, payment route, and availability. Here’s what Amazon, Microsoft, PayPal, Perplexity, and Google currently document.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The best alternative depends on where you want to shop: Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping is built around Amazon’s catalog, while Microsoft Copilot Checkout and PayPal-enabled shopping in Perplexity connect an assistant experience to participating merchants. Google AI Mode and Gemini also have a documented merchant payment integration path, but that does not establish that checkout is broadly available to consumers. In every case, merchant participation, region, and rollout can determine whether you can actually complete a purchase in chat.

What counts as an alternative for shopping and payments?

“Alternative” can mean three different things: a retailer’s own shopping assistant, a general-purpose assistant with merchant checkout integrations, or a payment provider that helps merchants make an assistant checkout possible. Those options solve different problems. A retailer-bound assistant may be useful for product discovery inside one store; an assistant with participating merchants may offer a broader but still limited catalog; and a payment integration is not, by itself, a consumer shopping service.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use these distinctions when comparing them:

  • Catalog scope: Is the assistant focused on one retailer, or does it surface products from merchants that have joined an integration?
  • Checkout location: Can you finish the transaction inside the assistant’s supported surface, or does it send you to a merchant?
  • Payment route: Which wallet or payment integration is documented for that particular checkout?
  • Availability: Is the feature live for your region, merchant, account, and app or website?
  • Control: Confirm the merchant, item, total, delivery terms, and payment method before authorizing a purchase. An AI recommendation does not guarantee that the product details are accurate.

How the main alternatives compare

Option Shopping scope Checkout and payment Availability caveat
Amazon Alexa for Shopping Amazon’s shopping experience and catalog Product research, comparisons, recommendations, and discovery in Amazon’s shopping experience; the cited Amazon material does not specify a separate payment integration for this comparison. Amazon’s current page says Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. See Amazon’s feature information.
Microsoft Copilot Checkout Inventory from participating merchants In-context checkout on Copilot.com and the Copilot mobile app, with integrations described via PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe. Merchants need a Microsoft Merchant Center account and product feed, and checkout onboarding is opt-in. Microsoft has not announced a timeline for expansion beyond current markets. See Microsoft’s Copilot Checkout page.
PayPal in Perplexity Products from participating merchants surfaced through a conversational shopping flow PayPal’s guide describes Instant Buy or Buy with PayPal for participating merchants. Participation is required; the guide does not establish universal merchant or regional coverage. See PayPal’s consumer guide.
PayPal checkout in ChatGPT Merchant offers where the rollout and merchant participation support them PayPal checkout is beginning to roll out, according to PayPal’s guide. PayPal says it may not be available to every user, region, or merchant. See PayPal’s consumer guide.
Google AI Mode and Gemini merchant integrations Merchant-dependent; the cited integration documentation does not establish the breadth of the consumer catalog PayPal’s merchant documentation describes a Buy button using Google Pay through Braintree’s Google payment handler. This documents a merchant integration path, not broad consumer availability. See PayPal’s Agent Ready documentation.

Amazon Alexa for Shopping: best for browsing Amazon

Amazon says Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. Amazon’s original description presents it as an assistant integrated into the Amazon shopping experience, using its catalog, reviews, community questions and answers, and information from across the web to support product research, comparison questions, recommendations, and discovery (Amazon’s announcement).

That makes it a natural fit if you already intend to shop in Amazon’s store and want help narrowing down options there. It is not a neutral search across retailers: its documented experience is anchored to Amazon’s shopping environment. Use the current name, Alexa for Shopping; “Rufus” is the former name.

Microsoft Copilot Checkout: in-chat checkout with merchant requirements

Microsoft describes Copilot Checkout on Copilot.com and in the Copilot mobile app. Its product page says merchant inventory and in-context checkout integrations involve PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe. This is a participating-merchant model, not a promise that every product mentioned in Copilot can be purchased there.

For a merchant to onboard, Microsoft says it needs a Microsoft Merchant Center account and product feed, and enrollment is opt-in. Microsoft also says there is no announced timeline for availability expansion beyond current markets. Those requirements mean the experience you see can depend on both your location and whether the merchant has enabled the integration (Microsoft’s Copilot Checkout page).

Microsoft Advertising reported in January 2026 that its internal data showed “53% more purchases within 30 minutes of interaction” for journeys that included Copilot compared with journeys that did not. It also reported that journeys were “194% more likely to result in a purchase” when shopping intent was present. These are Microsoft-reported figures, not an independent head-to-head comparison of shopping assistants or a guarantee of an individual shopper’s outcome (Microsoft Advertising’s post).

Perplexity and ChatGPT: PayPal-enabled shopping is conditional

PayPal’s March 13, 2026 consumer guide describes a Perplexity shopping flow where users can ask for recommendations and, with participating merchants, use Instant Buy or Buy with PayPal. It is a conversational discovery and checkout option, but the merchant must participate; the guide does not establish that every result or seller supports the purchase flow (PayPal’s guide).

The same guide says PayPal checkout in ChatGPT is beginning to roll out. PayPal explicitly cautions that it may not be available to every user, region, or merchant. Treat it as a developing capability, not a universal ChatGPT payment option. Check for the checkout choice in your own account and confirm the merchant and order details before paying.

Google AI Mode and Gemini: documented merchant path, not proof of broad availability

PayPal’s Agent Ready merchant documentation describes two distinct integration paths. Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) enables instant checkout in ChatGPT Apps with delegated payment tokens through Braintree. Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) enables a Buy button in Google AI Mode and Gemini using the Google Pay payment handler through Braintree (PayPal’s merchant documentation).

  • 16 Sleep Sounds, Fully Customizable: Choose from 16 built-in sleep sounds that play straight from the speaker with no phone, no app, and no subscription. These are merchant-side integration details. They do not establish that all Google AI Mode or Gemini users can make purchases in chat, which merchants are available to consumers, or what regions are supported. Do not infer general consumer availability from a merchant’s ability to integrate.

Which one should you choose?

  • You plan to buy from Amazon: Alexa for Shopping is the directly relevant option because its research and discovery features are integrated with Amazon’s store.
  • You want to shop across merchants from Copilot: Look for Copilot Checkout on Copilot.com or in the Copilot mobile app, but expect product availability to depend on merchants that have opted in and supplied a feed.
  • You use Perplexity and want PayPal checkout: PayPal documents purchase flows for participating merchants; check whether the merchant and item you want support one.
  • You want to pay with PayPal in ChatGPT: Treat the feature as a rollout and verify availability for your account, region, and merchant rather than assuming it is enabled.
  • You encounter a Google AI Mode or Gemini Buy button: The payment path described by PayPal uses Google Pay through Braintree, but the integration documentation alone cannot tell you whether the feature is broadly available to consumers.

What to check before completing an AI-assisted purchase

  1. Verify the seller and item. Open the product details and confirm the exact model, options, condition, and seller; an assistant’s summary is not a substitute for the listing.
  2. Review the full total. Check taxes, shipping, fees, delivery estimate, and return terms in the checkout flow before authorizing payment.
  3. Confirm the payment route. Make sure the checkout shows the wallet or payment method you intend to use. A merchant integration does not mean every payment method is supported.
  4. Check that the transaction is actually in-app. Some experiences may offer in-context checkout, while others may direct you to a merchant; follow the final checkout screen rather than assuming a purchase is complete.
  5. Keep the order confirmation. Use the merchant’s or payment provider’s receipt and order-status tools for changes, refunds, or disputes; the assistant is not necessarily the seller or payment processor.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
