If you want a horror game to play while you wait for OD, start with Silent Hill 2 (2024): its guilt- and grief-driven psychological horror is the clearest fit supported by the available details about Kojima’s new project. It is a thematic recommendation, not a game Kojima has named as a personal favorite. For Kojima’s own earlier experiment with fear, P.T. is worth knowing about—but it is not a standard current download recommendation.
What is OD about?
Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios announced OD on December 7, 2023. The announcement frames it around testing the threshold of fear and what it means to “OD on fear,” while blurring the boundaries between games and film. Jordan Peele is named as one of several storytellers, and Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier were announced as lead actors. Kojima Productions’ announcement describes collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and its cloud gaming technology, but does not specify exactly how that technology will work in the finished project or give a release date.

Xbox had announced its partnership with Kojima Productions in June 2022, saying the companies would create a game using cloud technology. That is useful background, not a full technical description of OD. Xbox’s partnership announcement does not establish what hardware, connection, or cloud features players will need.
As of October 2026, there is still no announced release window in the cited updates. A September 2026 GamesRadar report on an Xbox broadcast quotes Kojima describing OD as “a completely new kind of game that tests the thresholds of fear” and says he reported production proceeding on schedule. In October 2026, GamesRadar reported remarks from a radio episode in which he said, “this doesn’t mean we haven’t made the game. I want to keep quiet and release it.” These are secondary reports of his remarks; they do not add a release date or confirm detailed gameplay.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
The strongest match: Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2 is the most directly supported pick here for psychological dread rather than a claim about Kojima’s personal tastes. Konami’s description centers on James Sunderland’s guilt and grief, using the town of Silent Hill as a symbolic setting for existential horror. That makes it a natural choice if what interests you about OD is its announced focus on fear and atmosphere.
The 2024 remake expands explorable areas, shifts to an over-the-shoulder view, revises combat, and adds cut-scenes. Konami announced it for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, with release on October 8, 2024. Its official US announcement has the remake’s premise and release details. Konami Digital Entertainment reported that the game reached 1 million combined physical retail and digital copies in less than one week after launch; that is a launch-period sales figure, not a current player count. Konami’s EU launch report gives the figure.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
- Choose it for: psychological horror rooted in character, guilt, and grief.
- Presentation: third-person, over-the-shoulder exploration and combat in the remake.
- Availability in the announced release: PS5 and PC via Steam; check current store listings and regional editions before buying.
What P.T. can—and cannot—tell you
P.T. is relevant as a glimpse of Kojima’s approach to horror, not as a confirmed preview of OD. In a 2020 BAFTA interview, Kojima described it as “an experiment in producing an effect in response to” the human fear of the unknown. He said, “Human fear ultimately stems from the unknown,” and characterized the technique as a one-off. He also said he would like to make another horror game someday. BAFTA’s interview predates the announcement of OD; it does not establish that the new game uses P.T.’s mechanics or design.

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
How to choose while you wait
If you want one clear starting point, pick Silent Hill 2 for sustained psychological horror and a defined story. If you are mainly curious about Kojima’s own history with the genre, read his BAFTA comments on P.T. rather than treating an uncertain download as a practical recommendation. Neither choice should be mistaken for a Kojima-endorsed list: the available sources establish OD’s broad fear-focused premise, not its final gameplay or a set of games Kojima recommends playing first.
