- Choose Snowflake Cortex when your text and image data is already in Snowflake and analysts want governed, SQL-centric inference with a choice of hosted models.
- Choose Databricks AI Functions or
ai_querywhen lakehouse storage, Spark, streaming, and production batch pipelines are central. Databricks documents automatic parallelization, retries, and scaling for these workloads. - Choose Amazon Redshift ML with Bedrock when your organization is standardized on AWS, Redshift governance, and Bedrock-hosted foundation models, and you want inference or trained-model predictions from SQL.
- Choose Microsoft Fabric AI Functions when pandas, PySpark, Fabric Warehouse or Lakehouse SQL endpoints, Azure OpenAI administration, and Power BI form one Microsoft-centric workflow.
BigQuery remains a credible option. Google Cloud describes AI functions for generation, analysis, summarization, structured extraction, classification, embeddings, filtering, scoring, aggregation, token counting, and task-specific language, document, audio, and vision workloads. Its optimized mode is documented as scaling to “millions or billions of rows,” which is a capability statement rather than an independent throughput benchmark.
What you are replacing: the BigQuery AI-function pattern
BigQuery AI functions put model calls close to warehouse data. A query can generate text, summarize records, extract structured fields, classify content, calculate embeddings, or score rows without first exporting a table to a separate application. This design is attractive when SQL is the team’s main interface and data already resides in BigQuery.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The important baseline is not one function name but a set of workloads:
- Generation and transformation: create or rewrite text, translate content, and produce summaries.
- Analysis: classify, score, filter, aggregate, and detect sentiment or other attributes.
- Structured extraction: turn unstructured text or documents into fields that can be queried downstream.
- Embeddings and retrieval preparation: create vector representations for similarity and search workflows.
- Multimodal and document tasks: process language, documents, audio, and vision inputs where the selected BigQuery function supports them.
Any alternative should be evaluated against the specific subset you use. A platform may match SQL execution but differ in document parsing, image support, streaming integration, model availability, retry behavior, or prompt controls.

Snowflake Cortex: the closest SQL-native alternative
How it works
Snowflake Cortex AI Functions run unstructured analytics against text and images inside Snowflake. The service exposes models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, and other providers, so a team can choose among model families without rebuilding its warehouse pipeline around a separate inference service.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The operational pattern is familiar to BigQuery users: select rows, pass a text or image expression to an AI function, and write the result to a table or downstream view. Keep prompts, model selections, and output schemas versioned alongside SQL so a rerun is explainable.
Why it is a strong fit
- Data locality: tables remain in Snowflake, avoiding an export-and-reimport stage for ordinary enrichment jobs.
- SQL governance: existing roles, warehouses, masking policies, and auditing can remain part of the workflow.
- Model choice: the documented provider roster supports comparing models for quality, latency, and output format within the same data platform.
- Text and image analysis: it extends beyond plain text enrichment when your rows include visual inputs.
Batch processing matters
Snowflake explicitly recommends batch processing when numerous inputs, such as text from large SQL tables, must be processed. Treat a large enrichment job as a reproducible batch: select a stable cohort, include a deterministic record key, write results to a new table or versioned column, and record the model and prompt used. Avoid repeatedly invoking a function in ad hoc dashboard queries, where refreshes can create unpredictable spend and duplicate work.
When to look elsewhere
Snowflake Cortex is less natural when the source of truth is a Spark lakehouse, when you need Structured Streaming as a first-class pipeline, or when your application depends on custom orchestration outside SQL. In those cases, Databricks generally offers the more directly documented production pattern.

The general-purpose ai_query function is available from SQL or Python. Use it when the prompt, response format, or model endpoint needs more control than a task-specific function provides. A production design can combine both: standardized functions for common transformations and ai_query for specialized prompts or models.
Documented large-scale operating model
Databricks states that large-scale batch inference can be integrated into Lakeflow pipelines, Databricks workflows, and Structured Streaming. Its documentation also describes automatic parallelization, retries, and scaling. Those features address the operational problems that commonly appear when millions of rows are sent through an external model API.
Databricks advises submitting the full dataset in one query instead of manually splitting it into many small batches. That guidance is easy to misapply: submit the complete logical workload to the platform, but still design idempotent writes, bounded output sizes, and a way to resume failed partitions. Do not create your own loop that launches thousands of tiny queries unless a specific integration requires it.
Why it suits lakehouse teams
- Spark and Python access: data engineers can keep DataFrame transformations, feature preparation, and AI calls in one environment.
- Streaming support: Structured Streaming integration allows enrichment as records arrive rather than only in scheduled warehouse batches.
- Workflow integration: retries and orchestration can be placed alongside existing jobs, quality checks, and lineage.
- Flexible endpoint strategy:
ai_querycan support general-purpose calls where a fixed task function is too restrictive.
Trade-offs
Databricks introduces more lakehouse and Spark concepts than a warehouse-only workflow. Teams must manage cluster or SQL compute choices, streaming semantics, schema evolution, and job observability. If analysts only need occasional SQL enrichment on warehouse tables, Snowflake Cortex or Redshift may involve less operational surface area.

Two complementary paths
A Redshift deployment can invoke Amazon Bedrock models from SQL for text generation, sentiment analysis, and translation. Separately, Redshift ML supports training models with SQL statements and invoking those trained models in SQL queries for prediction.
This distinction matters. Bedrock is the natural path for foundation-model generation and language tasks. Redshift ML is the path for a model your team trains or manages through the Redshift ML workflow. They can coexist in one data estate, but they solve different problems.
Reasons to choose it
- AWS alignment: data, identity, networking, and model access can follow existing AWS controls.
- Warehouse-resident SQL: analysts and engineers can invoke supported AI operations without exporting rows to a separate application.
- Governed predictions: Redshift ML keeps training and prediction workflows close to tables, permissions, and SQL-based data quality checks.
- Clear task fit: the documented Bedrock examples cover generation, sentiment analysis, and translation.
Design considerations
Confirm which Bedrock models and regions your account can use, how prompts and responses are logged, and how IAM permissions are separated between data access and model invocation. For repeatable enrichment, persist the input identifier, model identifier, prompt version, response, and processing timestamp. Use a staging table to validate response shape before replacing a production column.

Redshift is not automatically the cheapest or fastest option. Model-token charges, Redshift compute, concurrency, retries, and data-transfer paths all affect total cost. Benchmark your own representative rows rather than inferring a winner from the platform name.
Microsoft Fabric AI Functions: one workflow across DataFrames and T-SQL
Execution surfaces
Fabric AI Functions apply one-line LLM-powered transformations to large pandas or PySpark DataFrames. They also expose T-SQL use in Fabric Warehouse, Lakehouse SQL endpoints, and mirrored databases. This combination is valuable when a team moves between notebooks, Spark jobs, warehouse queries, and Power BI-oriented data products.
Supported work
- Enrichment: add generated attributes or explanatory text to existing records.
- Classification: assign categories or labels to rows.
- Summarization: condense long text or documents.
- Document-field extraction: turn document content into structured columns.
- PDF summarization: create summaries from PDF inputs.
- Grounded responses: generate answers tied to supplied data or documents.
When Fabric is the practical choice
Fabric is compelling when Azure OpenAI administration, Microsoft identity, and Power BI integration already determine your platform direction. A pandas user can start in a notebook, a PySpark engineer can scale the same conceptual transformation, and a warehouse user can express it in T-SQL without maintaining separate application services for each persona.
Limits to validate
One-line syntax does not remove the need to validate model quotas, response length, retries, concurrency, and schema behavior. Test how your selected function handles nulls, malformed documents, oversized prompts, and partial failures. If the workload is a continuously arriving stream or requires highly customized endpoint orchestration, Databricks may provide a more directly documented fit.
How to choose among the four alternatives
1. Start with data location
Keep inference near the system that already owns the data unless there is a compelling quality or cost reason to move it. Moving a large text corpus can add transfer time, duplicate storage, access-control work, and a second lineage system. A Snowflake table points naturally toward Cortex; a Delta or Spark lakehouse points toward Databricks; Redshift tables point toward Bedrock through Redshift; Fabric Warehouse, Lakehouse, or mirrored data points toward Fabric AI Functions.

2. Match the execution model
- SQL warehouse: Snowflake Cortex and Redshift with Bedrock preserve a SQL-first workflow.
- Lakehouse and Spark: Databricks supports SQL, Python, batch workflows, and Structured Streaming.
- DataFrames plus T-SQL: Fabric covers pandas, PySpark, and multiple Fabric SQL surfaces.
3. Decide how much model control you need
Task-specific functions reduce prompt boilerplate and can simplify output handling for extraction, classification, sentiment, or document parsing. General-purpose interfaces such as Databricks ai_query are preferable when you need custom instructions, a particular endpoint, or a response schema that does not fit a fixed task. Snowflake’s provider range is useful when model choice within the warehouse is a priority. Redshift users should separate Bedrock foundation-model calls from Redshift ML models trained through SQL.
4. Define batch and retry behavior before production
Large language-model jobs fail in ways ordinary SQL scans do not: rate limits, transient endpoint errors, malformed responses, token limits, and partial completion. Select a platform whose documented operating model matches your workload. Snowflake recommends batch processing for numerous inputs. Databricks documents parallelization, retries, scaling, and full-dataset submission. For Redshift and Fabric, implement explicit staging, retry, and reconciliation logic around the supported function calls.

5. Evaluate governance and residency
List the regions in which data and model processing may occur, then verify identity, encryption, logging, retention, and provider-use policies for your account. Keep sensitive fields out of prompts unless the approved model path permits them. Record which rows were processed, which model handled them, and whether the response passed validation.
6. Measure economics with your workload
There is no source-backed universal cheapest option. Cost depends on input and output tokens, model selection, retries, warehouse or cluster time, concurrency, storage, and any transfer between systems. Build a small representative corpus containing short, long, multilingual, malformed, and empty records. Measure successful rows per unit of compute, token consumption, retry rate, latency distribution, and usable-output rate. Include the engineering cost of operating a separate pipeline, not just the model invoice.
A migration plan that avoids expensive rework
- Inventory current BigQuery functions. Group each query by generation, summarization, extraction, classification, embeddings, scoring, or multimodal processing. Record input columns, expected output schema, prompt text, model settings, and refresh frequency.
- Choose a pilot slice. Use a fixed sample that reflects production length, language, document type, and failure conditions. Keep the original BigQuery output as a comparison baseline.
- Map each task to the closest primitive. Use Snowflake Cortex for Snowflake SQL, Databricks task-specific functions or
ai_queryfor lakehouse workflows, Bedrock calls through Redshift for AWS SQL, and Fabric AI Functions for DataFrame or Fabric SQL transformations. - Standardize the output contract. Require a stable record key, model name, prompt version, processing timestamp, status, error category, and raw or normalized response as appropriate. Parse structured output into typed columns only after validating it.
- Run quality and operational tests. Compare extraction accuracy, classification consistency, summary usefulness, latency, retry behavior, null handling, and token consumption. Do not treat matching text as the only success criterion; a cheaper response that fails schema validation is not a successful row.
- Backfill in controlled cohorts. Use an immutable input snapshot, idempotent writes, and a rerun key. Separate completed, failed, and rejected rows so a transient outage does not force a full restart.
- Promote with monitoring. Alert on error rate, response-length anomalies, token growth, queue delay, and output-schema failures. Retain enough metadata to reproduce a result when the model or prompt changes.
Common failure modes and fixes
Sending one request per dashboard refresh
Interactive reports can trigger repeated model calls, inflate cost, and produce changing results. Materialize enrichment in a scheduled table, then let dashboards read the stored result.
Manually splitting a large job into tiny batches
Hand-built batching can create thousands of fragile queries and make retries difficult to reconcile. Follow the platform’s documented batch pattern. Databricks specifically recommends submitting the full dataset in one query rather than manually splitting it into small batches.
Assuming “millions or billions of rows” is a throughput promise
Google Cloud’s wording describes optimized-mode capability, not a neutral benchmark. Actual completion time depends on model, prompt size, concurrency, quotas, output length, and failures. Treat the figure as an indication that the interface is designed for very large tables, then benchmark your own workload.
Ignoring malformed or partial output
LLM output can be syntactically valid text but unusable for downstream SQL. Validate JSON or typed fields, enforce length limits, quarantine failures, and retain the original response where policy allows.
Comparing list prices instead of completed work
A meaningful comparison includes the cost of successful, validated rows, not only token rates. Add compute, retries, storage, monitoring, engineering time, and any transfer charges to the calculation.
Best Value
Moving regulated data without a residency review
Model availability may differ by region and account. Confirm where prompts and responses are processed, which providers are involved, and how logs are retained before sending sensitive text or documents.
Which option replaces common BigQuery use cases?
| BigQuery-style workload | Closest alternatives | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| SQL text generation or rewriting | Snowflake Cortex; Redshift with Bedrock; Fabric T-SQL AI Functions; Databricks ai_query |
Use the SQL surface that already owns the data; choose ai_query when custom prompt or endpoint control is important |
| Document parsing and field extraction | Databricks task-specific AI Functions; Fabric document-field extraction; Snowflake text and image functions | Choose based on document location, required output schema, and whether Spark or DataFrame processing is already in use |
| Classification and sentiment | Databricks task-specific functions; Redshift with Bedrock; Fabric AI Functions; Snowflake Cortex | Task-specific functions can reduce prompt and parsing work; validate labels against a human-reviewed set |
| Large scheduled enrichment table | Snowflake Cortex batch processing; Databricks batch inference; Redshift SQL inference; Fabric DataFrame or SQL functions | Use idempotent staging and measure successful validated rows, retries, and total cost |
| Streaming enrichment | Databricks AI Functions with Structured Streaming | Databricks has the clearest documented fit among these alternatives for streaming production workflows |
| Embeddings and vector preparation | BigQuery supports embeddings; alternative support must be verified for the selected model and interface | Do not assume that a platform’s text-generation function exposes an equivalent embedding workflow; confirm the exact function and output type before migration |
Bottom-line selection
For a direct SQL replacement, start with Snowflake Cortex if your data is in Snowflake, or Redshift with Bedrock if your estate is AWS- and Redshift-led. For lakehouse-scale batch, Spark, and streaming, Databricks has the strongest documented operational guidance. For pandas, PySpark, T-SQL, and Power BI workflows under Microsoft administration, Fabric AI Functions are the natural fit. Keep BigQuery when its existing functions, governance, and optimized-mode scale meet your requirements; switching platforms without a data-location, quality, and total-cost reason usually adds complexity rather than removing it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Snowflake or Databricks process millions of text rows?
Both are designed for large-table workloads. Snowflake recommends batch processing for numerous inputs, while Databricks documents automatic parallelization, retries, and scaling for large-scale batch inference. Neither statement is a neutral throughput benchmark; test with your model, prompt size, and concurrency.

What is the cheapest way to run batch LLM enrichment?
There is no platform-independent answer. Compare the total cost of validated output, including model tokens, warehouse or cluster compute, retries, storage, transfer, and operations, using a representative sample.
Should I use Databricks ai_query or a task-specific AI Function?
Use a task-specific function for documented jobs such as document parsing, extraction, classification, or sentiment. Use ai_query when you need a custom prompt, response format, or general-purpose model call.
Is the phrase “millions or billions of rows” a BigQuery performance guarantee?
No. Google Cloud presents it as optimized-mode capability wording. It does not establish completion time, throughput, cost, or superiority over other platforms for a particular workload.
