Best Alternatives to a Phone Speaker for Music and Podcasts

For most people, a mid-sized portable Bluetooth speaker is the best replacement for a phone’s built-in speaker. It produces substantially more volume and bass while remaining easy to move. Choose a portable Wi‑Fi smart speaker if you want hands-free playback, direct streaming, casting or multi-room audio. Choose a mains-powered smart speaker when it will stay in one room and you do not need a battery.

The right choice depends on four constraints: how far the speaker must travel, whether your phone should remain the source, how much voice clarity matters for podcasts, and whether Wi‑Fi-based conveniences justify additional setup and dependencies.

Why a separate speaker is a meaningful upgrade

A phone is designed for personal listening, not for filling a room. Speaker size affects maximum loudness, battery use, bass extension and portability. RTINGS identifies size as the most important buying decision because it influences nearly every other part of a speaker’s performance. Tiny models are convenient but cannot reproduce the same low bass or room-filling volume as a mid-sized enclosure.

A separate speaker also moves the sound source away from your hand. You can leave a phone charging, keep it on a desk while cooking, or use it for another task while the speaker continues playing. With Bluetooth, the phone still supplies the audio, but the speaker’s larger drivers do the work. With Wi‑Fi, compatible services can stream directly to the speaker, reducing phone handling even further.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Podcast listening has a different priority from music. Clear speech, consistent output around the room and controlled bass matter more than maximum low-end impact. RTINGS’ testing of the Sonos Play, for example, emphasizes clear voices and instruments and consistent sound across listening angles. Stereo separation, soundstage and directivity also influence whether spoken voices feel natural rather than boxed into one small point.

Choose the speaker type before choosing a model

Speaker path Best for Strengths Trade-offs
Portable Bluetooth speaker Simple listening indoors, outdoors or while travelling Quick pairing; works with audio from almost any phone, tablet or laptop; battery powered The phone usually remains the playback source; very small models give up bass and volume
Portable Wi‑Fi smart speaker Hands-free music and podcasts around the home Direct streaming, voice control, casting and multi-room playback; some models retain Bluetooth away from Wi‑Fi Smart functions depend on Wi‑Fi and usually cost more than basic Bluetooth designs
Mains-powered smart speaker One-room listening where portability is unimportant Always ready, no battery limit, Wi‑Fi services and voice assistant; often stronger room-filling output Must remain near a power outlet
Two-speaker stereo or multi-room system Wider music presentation or synchronized whole-home playback Separate left and right channels, broader coverage and ecosystem expansion Higher total cost and more setup than one speaker

How to match the choice to your listening habits

Choose portable Bluetooth for the least friction

Bluetooth is the simplest replacement path. Pair the speaker once, select it as the phone’s audio output and use any app you already use. It works in places without Wi‑Fi, including parks, hotel rooms and outdoor gatherings. The trade-off is that the phone remains involved: notifications, calls or a depleted battery can interrupt playback unless you manage those separately.

A mid-sized enclosure is generally the best compromise. It is still movable but has enough internal volume for fuller bass and higher output than a tiny pocket speaker. If you mostly listen to spoken-word programs, prioritize a model whose sound remains clear at low and moderate volume rather than choosing solely by maximum loudness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose portable Wi‑Fi when you want the speaker to do more

Wi‑Fi smart speakers can stream supported services directly, respond to voice commands and join groups of speakers. This is useful when your phone is often in another room, when you want to cast from several devices, or when you want synchronized playback throughout a home. Bluetooth fallback is valuable because it preserves basic listening when you leave the Wi‑Fi network.

Wi‑Fi is not a universal replacement for Bluetooth. Voice control, app control, AirPlay 2 and multi-speaker grouping may require the speaker to be connected to Wi‑Fi. Bose explicitly states that its Portable Smart Speaker falls back to Bluetooth away from Wi‑Fi, while the Wi‑Fi-dependent controls are unavailable in that situation.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Choose mains power for a permanent listening spot

If the speaker will stay beside a desk, kitchen counter or television, eliminating battery charging can be more convenient than portability. A mains-powered smart speaker is always ready for a voice request and can devote its enclosure to room-filling output rather than a battery. The compromise is absolute: it cannot accompany you to a patio, hotel or picnic without an outlet.

Choose two speakers when width matters more than simplicity

A stereo pair uses separate left and right units, improving the width of music and some spatial effects. A multi-room arrangement synchronizes compatible speakers in different rooms. Both approaches increase cost and setup, and they work best when you are willing to remain within one manufacturer’s ecosystem. Start with one speaker unless you already know that stereo separation or whole-home playback is a priority.

Portable Wi‑Fi smart speaker options

Bose Portable Smart Speaker

This model combines three roles: a wireless home speaker, a portable Bluetooth speaker and a voice-controlled speaker. On Wi‑Fi it supports Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2 and multi-room grouping. Its 360-degree audio pattern is intended to provide consistent coverage rather than a narrow forward-facing sweet spot.

Bose rates up to 12 hours of loud playback. That figure is a manufacturer rating, not a guarantee for every volume level or wireless configuration. IPX4 means splash resistance, making it more suitable for a kitchen counter or covered outdoor area than for immersion or heavy dust. When Wi‑Fi is unavailable, Bluetooth keeps it usable, but Wi‑Fi-only voice, app, AirPlay 2 and grouping functions do not operate. A physical microphone-off button provides a direct privacy control.

JBL Cove P1

JBL specifies up to 14 hours of playtime and IP56 water and dust resistance. The rating is stronger for dust and water exposure than a splash-only design, although it is not an invitation to submerge the speaker. Connectivity includes Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth, with AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect and Roon Ready listed for compatible playback.

  • Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

For music, JBL lists Dolby Atmos Music support. For spoken audio, the practical advantages are direct service access and the ability to place the speaker in a Wi‑Fi system rather than repeatedly pairing a phone. Alexa+, Auracast and expansion to stereo or whole-home systems add options if you intend to build beyond one unit.

Sonos Play

RTINGS lists the Sonos Play as battery powered with Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, voice-assistant support, IP67 protection and 12 hours of battery life in its 2026 test roundup. Its published listening summary highlights clear voices and instruments and sound that remains consistent across listening angles, qualities that suit podcasts and audiobooks as well as music.

IP67 indicates substantially greater resistance to dust and temporary water exposure than IPX4 or IP56 designs. Verify the manufacturer’s handling guidance before exposing any speaker to salt water, pressurized spray or prolonged submersion. The Sonos ecosystem is most useful when you expect to add rooms or create stereo pairs later.

Portable Bluetooth alternatives

Beats Pill

Apple’s listing describes the Beats Pill as a battery-powered portable speaker with Class 1 Bluetooth, speakerphone support and voice-assistant activation. Class 1 Bluetooth is intended for a robust wireless link, but actual range varies with walls, interference and the transmitting device. Because it is Bluetooth-first, it is a straightforward choice when you want to play any phone, tablet or laptop audio without configuring a home network.

Two Beats Pill units can be paired for stereo mode. That arrangement can widen music playback, but it requires purchasing and charging two speakers and keeping them within the pairing system’s supported range. Runtime and an ingress-protection rating are not stated in the supplied specifications, so do not assume a particular endurance or outdoor rating without checking the current product documentation.

Mains-powered smart speaker option

Amazon Echo Studio (2025)

RTINGS lists the 2025 Echo Studio as a mains-powered Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth smart speaker with Alexa and speakerphone support. It is suited to a fixed room where you want the speaker ready for voice requests and do not want to plan around charging. Wi‑Fi enables its smart functions; Bluetooth provides a more general local input.

Its stationary design is a benefit for a desk, living room or kitchen system, but it is the wrong category for travel or outdoor use. The supplied specifications do not establish a battery runtime or an IP water-and-dust rating, so treat it as an indoor, outlet-dependent product unless the current documentation says otherwise.

Connectivity: Bluetooth versus Wi‑Fi in daily use

What Bluetooth does well

  • Works with nearly any recent phone, tablet or laptop that supports Bluetooth audio.
  • Does not require an internet connection or a shared home network.
  • Is quick to use outside the home, where Wi‑Fi credentials and casting services may not be available.
  • Keeps the phone as the source, so every app that can play audio can usually use the speaker.

Bluetooth is affected by distance, walls and radio interference. Keep the phone reasonably close when you need a stable connection, and remember that phone calls, navigation prompts and notification sounds may be sent to the speaker depending on the phone’s settings.

What Wi‑Fi adds

  • Direct playback from supported services, so the phone can leave the room or perform another task.
  • Voice control through an integrated assistant.
  • Casting and service-specific controls such as Spotify Connect, AirPlay, Google Cast or other listed protocols.
  • Multi-room grouping and, on compatible models, stereo pairing managed through the speaker ecosystem.

Wi‑Fi introduces dependencies. The speaker needs network access, the controlling app must be compatible and some services may require their own accounts. If the router is down, the smart features may stop even though Bluetooth remains available on models that support it.

Step-by-step setup

Pair a Bluetooth speaker

  1. Charge the speaker or connect its power cable, then turn it on.
  2. Press the speaker’s Bluetooth or pairing control until its indicator shows pairing mode.
  3. On the phone, open Settings → Bluetooth and enable Bluetooth.
  4. Select the speaker’s name from the available-device list and accept the pairing request.
  5. Start a podcast or music app and confirm that the phone’s output control is set to the speaker.
  6. Test a call or notification if you need those sounds to remain on the phone; adjust the phone’s audio-output settings before regular listening.

Set up a Wi‑Fi smart speaker

  1. Install the manufacturer’s current speaker app on the phone or tablet.
  2. Plug in or charge the speaker and place it within reliable range of the home router.
  3. In the app, choose Add device or the equivalent setup command, then select the speaker.
  4. Enter the home Wi‑Fi credentials and complete any firmware update offered during setup.
  5. Sign in to supported music or podcast services if you want direct playback or voice requests.
  6. Test both a direct service command and Bluetooth playback so you know which functions remain available when you leave Wi‑Fi.

Create a stereo pair or multi-room group

  1. Set up each speaker individually and update both to the same software version.
  2. Place stereo speakers with a clear left-right relationship and similar distance from the main listening position.
  3. Open the ecosystem app and choose Create stereo pair, Group speakers or the equivalent control.
  4. Assign left and right channels when the app asks, then play a familiar track at moderate volume.
  5. For multi-room playback, add rooms one at a time and check synchronization before increasing volume.

Grouping is ecosystem-specific. Bose, JBL and Sonos systems use their own compatibility rules, and a Bluetooth-only speaker cannot normally join a Wi‑Fi multi-room group without an intermediary device.

Battery, portability and protection

Battery ratings are maximum or typical manufacturer figures under stated test conditions, not a fixed number for every listening session. Loud playback consumes more energy than quiet podcast listening, and Wi‑Fi, voice-assistant activity and cold temperatures can reduce practical endurance. The published figures available here are up to 12 hours for the Bose Portable Smart Speaker, up to 14 hours for the JBL Cove P1 and 12 hours for the Sonos Play in RTINGS’ 2026 roundup.

Portability is more than battery capacity. A handle, stable base and controls that are usable outdoors can matter as much as the number of hours. Because the supplied specifications do not state weights for these models, compare the current manufacturer dimensions and weight if you expect to carry one daily.

Ingress ratings are not interchangeable. IPX4 indicates splash resistance, IP56 combines dust protection with resistance to water jets, and IP67 indicates dust-tight construction with protection against temporary immersion under the rating’s test conditions. None of these ratings makes a speaker invulnerable to drops, chemicals, sand abrasion or salt-water corrosion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making podcasts sound natural

  • Prioritize vocal clarity: A speaker that keeps consonants distinct at moderate volume is easier to understand than one tuned only for heavy bass.
  • Use even coverage: 360-degree or wide-dispersion designs reduce the need to sit directly in front of the cabinet while moving around a room.
  • Control bass near walls: Corner placement can increase low-frequency energy and sometimes mask speech. Move the speaker a short distance from a wall if voices sound boomy.
  • Use stereo selectively: Two speakers can widen music, but a single well-placed unit may give more consistent speech coverage in a kitchen or workshop.
  • Keep volume below distortion: Raising a small speaker to its limit can make voices harsher; a larger mid-sized model often sounds cleaner at the same room level.

Privacy and hands-free control

Voice-enabled speakers use microphones to detect commands. The Bose Portable Smart Speaker includes a physical microphone-off button, which is useful when you want a visible, immediate privacy control. Other models may provide software controls or indicator lights; verify the exact behavior in the current documentation before relying on a mute state.

Voice control is most useful for starting, pausing or changing playback when your hands are occupied. It is less dependable when the speaker is offline, the requested service is unsupported or several people speak at once. Bluetooth-only models avoid always-listening assistant features but also cannot start a Wi‑Fi service without the phone.

Troubleshooting common problems

The phone connects but no sound comes out

  • Open the phone’s media-output selector and choose the speaker explicitly.
  • Raise both the phone’s media volume and the speaker’s hardware volume.
  • Pause audio on another paired device that may have taken control.
  • Forget the speaker in Bluetooth settings, restart both devices and pair again.

Wi‑Fi features disappeared

  • Confirm that the speaker and phone are on the same Wi‑Fi network, not separate guest networks.
  • Restart the router and speaker, then reopen the manufacturer’s app.
  • Check whether the service, assistant or casting protocol you are using is supported on that model.
  • If you are away from the network, switch to Bluetooth on models that provide Bluetooth fallback.

Playback stops or sounds distorted

  • Move the phone or router closer and reduce obstructions.
  • Lower the volume slightly to see whether the speaker is reaching its output limit.
  • Disconnect unused Bluetooth devices and stop duplicate playback sessions.
  • Charge the battery; low-power behavior can affect some portable speakers.

Two speakers are out of sync

  • Make sure both units use the same app and current firmware.
  • Remove and recreate the stereo pair or room group.
  • Keep both speakers on the same Wi‑Fi network and avoid mixing Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth sources in one group.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Set the location: Decide whether the speaker must leave the room. If yes, start with portable Bluetooth or portable Wi‑Fi.
  2. Set the source: If your phone should remain the universal source, Bluetooth is sufficient. If you want direct services and voice requests, require Wi‑Fi.
  3. Set the listening priority: Choose clear, even coverage for podcasts; choose stereo expansion or Dolby Atmos Music support when music presentation is the priority.
  4. Set the endurance: Compare the published 12-hour Bose, 14-hour JBL and 12-hour Sonos figures with your expected sessions, remembering that loudness changes runtime.
  5. Set the environment: Match IPX4, IP56 or IP67 protection to the actual exposure, and do not treat a rating as drop or corrosion protection.
  6. Set the ecosystem: Check support for the services and casting method you already use, such as Spotify Connect, AirPlay, Google Cast or the manufacturer’s multi-room system.
  7. Set privacy expectations: Decide whether you need a physical microphone mute and whether voice assistants belong in the room.
  8. Plan expansion: Buy one speaker first unless you already need stereo or multi-room playback; adding a second unit later is simpler when you stay within one ecosystem.

Which option should you buy?

Choose a mid-sized portable Bluetooth speaker if you want the most dependable, least complicated improvement over a phone speaker. Choose the Bose Portable Smart Speaker, JBL Cove P1 or Sonos Play category when direct Wi‑Fi streaming, voice control and room-to-room playback matter enough to accept network setup. Choose the Beats Pill when a straightforward Bluetooth speakerphone and optional stereo pairing fit your use. Choose the Amazon Echo Studio (2025) when the speaker will remain plugged in and hands-free, Wi‑Fi-based room listening is the priority. A two-speaker system is justified when wider music presentation or synchronized rooms is worth the extra hardware and configuration.
