Best alternatives to a new Mac for Windows and Linux users

For most people replacing a new Mac, the Dell XPS 14 (2026) is the strongest premium Windows laptop, the System76 Lemur Pro is the clearest Linux-first choice, the Framework Laptop 12 is the best repairable 2-in-1, and the ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5 is the practical compact desktop alternative. Lenovo’s ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition makes more sense when you want a large OLED screen, excellent keyboard and business-oriented ports. Your best choice depends on whether software compatibility, portability, sustained performance, repairability or a small desktop footprint matters most.

At-a-glance: which Mac alternative fits you?

Model Best for Operating-system focus Display or form factor Memory and storage information Key trade-off
Dell XPS 14 (2026) Premium Windows laptop users who want a MacBook Air-style machine Windows 14-inch laptop; optional 120 Hz OLED touchscreen Configurable up to 64 GB RAM Shorter battery life and weaker sustained performance than the MacBook Air in RTINGS testing
Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025) Large-screen work, coding and business use Windows 15-inch 120 Hz OLED laptop The cited review does not specify a maximum memory configuration More expensive and less portable than a MacBook Air
System76 Lemur Pro Linux-first ultraportable computing Pop!_OS and Ubuntu optimized; other Linux distributions and Windows can be installed Ultraportable laptop Up to 32 GB LPDDR5X at 7467 MHz; PCIe 4 storage options Windows installation is not guaranteed or supported by System76
Framework Laptop 12 Repairability, upgrades and a convertible design Linux-friendly; Windows-capable 12.2-inch 2-in-1; 2.87 pounds in Tom’s Guide’s reviewed configuration Modular expansion cards let you change port selection Smaller screen and keyboard than 14- or 15-inch laptops
ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5 A compact Windows desktop to replace a Mac mini-style setup Windows 11 Pro Mini PC; requires an external display, keyboard and mouse 16 GB memory; 512 GB storage Not portable without carrying a separate monitor and peripherals

RTINGS’ latest recommendation update, dated September 16, 2026, supplies the Windows laptop comparisons. System76’s current product and support pages provide the Lemur Pro specifications and operating-system guidance. Tom’s Guide reviewed the Framework Laptop 12 in 2026, and Consumer Reports lists the ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5 in its 2026 Buying Guide at an approximate retail price of $800. Prices, stock and model revisions can change by region.

What makes a good alternative to a new Mac?

A Mac replacement is not simply a laptop with a similar screen size. It must fit the applications you use, the way you work and how long you expect to keep it. Start with five questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which operating system do your applications require? Windows-native software, corporate management tools and many PC games favor the Dell, Lenovo and ASUS systems. Linux development tools and a Linux-native workflow favor the System76 or Framework.
  • Do you need sustained performance? A thin laptop can post impressive short benchmarks yet slow down during long renders, builds or exports. RTINGS found that the MacBook maintains performance better under sustained loads than the XPS 14, so creators should evaluate cooling and long-running workloads rather than headline specifications alone.
  • How much portability is enough? A 15-inch OLED workstation gives you more workspace but adds size and weight. A mini PC saves desk space, but it cannot replace a laptop when you need a screen and battery on the road.
  • Will you repair or upgrade it? Framework’s expansion cards and System76’s published upgrade guidance are the clearest advantages for user serviceability in this group.
  • What is your real budget? Consumer Reports’ approximately $800 figure for the ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5 is a retail estimate, not a live offer. Laptop configurations vary substantially with memory, storage and display choices.

Dell XPS 14 (2026): the premium Windows laptop alternative

The Dell XPS 14 (2026) is the closest all-round Windows answer to the question, “What is the best Windows laptop alternative to a MacBook?” RTINGS specifically compares it with the 13-inch MacBook Air (M5, 2026). It combines a compact premium chassis with configuration flexibility that Apple does not offer in the same way.

Why choose it

  • You can configure it with up to 64 GB of RAM, useful for large codebases, virtual machines, demanding browser sessions and creative applications.
  • The optional 120 Hz OLED touchscreen provides smoother scrolling and high-contrast image quality for users who value display experience over maximum battery endurance.
  • Windows provides broad compatibility with commercial software, accessories and games, making it the safer choice for a mixed household or workplace.

Important limitations

RTINGS reports shorter battery life than the MacBook Air and weaker performance during sustained workloads. That distinction matters if your day consists of repeated exports, long compilations or extended CPU-intensive work. The XPS 14 can still be the better purchase when a required Windows application, expandable memory configuration or touchscreen outweighs endurance.

Who should buy it?

Choose the XPS 14 when you want a polished, high-end Windows notebook and will spend much of your time in ordinary office, development, design or media applications. If your work is dominated by hours-long rendering or other continuous loads, compare thermal behavior and tested runtimes before choosing it over a Mac.

Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025): a larger business workstation

The ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition is the Windows alternative for readers who find a 13- or 14-inch laptop cramped. RTINGS highlights its 120 Hz OLED display, excellent keyboard and touchpad, and a broader port selection than the MacBook Air.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where it excels

  • Large OLED workspace: The 15-inch panel gives spreadsheets, timelines, code and side-by-side documents more room without requiring an external monitor.
  • Input quality: The keyboard and touchpad are singled out as excellent, an important advantage for people who type all day.
  • Connectivity: Its wider port selection reduces the need for dongles when attaching displays, storage or office equipment.

Trade-offs

The larger chassis is less portable and more expensive than a MacBook Air. You are paying for screen area, business features and connectivity rather than the lightest possible travel package. It is a better desk-to-meeting machine than a minimalist commuter laptop.

Best fit

Pick the ThinkPad X9 15 when your priority is a comfortable full-size working environment and you routinely connect several peripherals. It is especially sensible for office professionals, analysts and developers who value keyboard quality and ports more than minimum weight.

System76 Lemur Pro: the Linux-first ultraportable

The Lemur Pro is the most direct answer to “What is the best Linux laptop instead of a Mac?” System76 states that its computers are optimized for Pop!_OS and Ubuntu. The company also says you can install other Linux distributions and Microsoft Windows.

Hardware and Linux support

The current product page lists up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory running at 7467 MHz and PCIe 4 storage options. System76 publishes upgrade guidance and offers lifetime support, which helps owners maintain the machine as distributions and workloads evolve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the Windows caveat means

System76’s support documentation is explicit: it does not guarantee the success or quality of experience when installing Windows and does not provide support or testing for any Windows version. If Windows is essential, verify the exact Lemur Pro model identifier, driver availability and Windows 11 requirements before ordering. “Windows can be installed” is not the same as a manufacturer-supported Windows laptop.

Who should choose it?

The Lemur Pro suits developers, administrators, students and privacy-conscious users who want Linux to be the primary environment from the first boot. It is also a strong choice when documented Linux support and service guidance matter more than matching the industrial design or accessory ecosystem of a Mac.

Framework Laptop 12: the repairable, modular 2-in-1

The Framework Laptop 12 targets a different weakness of sealed laptops: difficult repairs and fixed ports. Tom’s Guide describes it as a 12.2-inch convertible and reports a reviewed configuration measuring 11.3 × 8.42 × 0.73 inches and weighing 2.87 pounds.

Modular ports and upgrades

Its expansion cards are the defining feature. You can select the ports you need and replace a card later if your workflow changes. Tom’s Guide notes that a new port standard can be adopted by buying a card instead of replacing the entire laptop. That is useful for photographers, developers and anyone whose peripherals change faster than their computer.

Repairability

Tom’s Guide calls the Laptop 12 an outstanding choice for people who are tired of disposable electronics and want a portable device they can repair and upgrade for years. The practical benefit is lower disruption: a failed or outdated component can potentially be replaced without discarding the whole system, subject to the parts and instructions available for your configuration.

Compromises

A 12.2-inch 2-in-1 is easier to carry than a large-screen notebook, but it provides less workspace and a smaller keyboard. Choose it for flexibility, handwriting or tablet use and long-term serviceability, not for the largest display or the highest sustained performance.

ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5: a compact Windows desktop alternative

If your real question is “What can replace a Mac mini?”, a mini PC is the relevant category. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists the ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5 with Windows 11 Pro, an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage, at an approximate retail price of $800.

Why a mini PC can be better than a laptop

  • It occupies little desk space and can remain connected to a full-size monitor, keyboard, wired network and external storage.
  • You avoid paying for a built-in screen, keyboard and battery when you already have suitable peripherals.
  • Windows 11 Pro is ready for common business software and management environments.

What to budget for

The approximately $800 figure is a Consumer Reports retail estimate, not a guaranteed current price. A complete workstation also needs a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers or headphones and possibly a webcam. Check the exact configuration and regional stock before buying because mini-PC memory, storage and processor variants can differ.

Compare the alternatives by the decision that matters most

Operating system and application compatibility

Windows-native software has the least friction on the Dell XPS 14, ThinkPad X9 15 and ASUS NUC. Linux-first support is strongest on the Lemur Pro, while the Framework Laptop 12 gives you a flexible Linux-friendly platform with a repairable design. For a dual-boot plan, verify drivers and firmware for the precise model rather than assuming that a related revision behaves identically.

Portability and display

The XPS 14 balances a premium portable format with an optional 120 Hz OLED touch display. The ThinkPad X9 15 trades portability for a larger 120 Hz OLED workspace. The Framework Laptop 12 is the smallest and lightest cited laptop and adds 2-in-1 flexibility. The Lemur Pro is positioned as an ultraportable, while the NUC is compact only after it is installed at a desk.

Performance under long workloads

For short tasks, specifications can look similar across premium laptops. For sustained compiling, rendering or data processing, cooling and power limits matter. RTINGS’ comparison found the MacBook maintains performance better than the XPS 14 during prolonged loads. Treat that as a workload-specific result, not a universal ranking of every application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repairability and future changes

The Framework’s replaceable expansion cards address changing connectivity, and its repair-oriented design is the clearest modular option here. System76’s upgrade documentation gives Lemur Pro owners a defined path for supported changes. The Windows-focused models may still be serviceable, but the cited material does not establish the same modular port system.

Best Value
ASUS NUC 14 Pro+ Mini PC for Professionals Ultra 9 185H Gen AI Ready | Up to Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU, on-device generative AI, aluminum chassis, toolless access for storage and memory upgrades
  • Fully Configured: Powered by the latest 14th Gen Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor with Intel Arc Graphics, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, and Win 11 Home
  • AI Ready: Harnesses the prowess of Intel Core Ultra processors’ AI engines – GPU, NPU, and CPU – for high throughput, low power, and fast response

  • Customizable: Designed for toolless chassis access making upgrades easier, safer, and faster
  • Wi-Fi Sensing: Takes advantage of Wi-Fi sensing to deliver instant availability while reducing power consumption

How to choose, step by step

  1. List non-negotiable applications. Write down every work, school, game, peripheral and security tool you must run. Mark each as Windows-only, Linux-native, cross-platform or browser-based.
  2. Decide laptop versus desktop. If you need a battery, built-in display and travel capability, choose among the four laptops. If the computer will stay at one desk, price the NUC together with the peripherals you need.
  3. Set a screen and weight limit. Pick the ThinkPad X9 15 for maximum workspace, the XPS 14 for a premium middle ground, or the Framework Laptop 12 when compact 2-in-1 use matters most.
  4. Choose your operating-system support level. Make Linux the default on the Lemur Pro when you want vendor-optimized Pop!_OS or Ubuntu. Choose a Windows-first model when Windows support is mandatory.
  5. Estimate your memory and storage needs. Developers using virtual machines and creators working with large files should prioritize higher-memory configurations. The XPS 14 reaches 64 GB, the Lemur Pro lists up to 32 GB, and the NUC listing specifies 16 GB.
  6. Check sustained-workload reviews. If long CPU or GPU sessions are routine, look for thermal and battery testing for the exact configuration, not just the processor name.
  7. Verify the exact model before payment. Confirm the model identifier, display option, memory, storage, operating-system license, keyboard layout, warranty and regional availability.

Moving from a Mac to Windows or Linux

Prepare your data

  1. Export browser bookmarks, password-manager data and two-factor-recovery codes before wiping or selling the Mac.
  2. Copy documents, photos, project folders and local mail archives to a format readable by the destination operating system.
  3. Inventory paid applications and confirm whether your license transfers to Windows or Linux. Some licenses are platform-specific.
  4. Record the file systems and encryption settings on external drives. Reformatting can erase data, so keep two verified copies until the new machine is working.

Set up Windows

On the Dell, Lenovo or ASUS system, install all firmware and Windows updates first, then obtain drivers from the manufacturer for the exact model. Reconnect peripherals one at a time so you can identify a driver or configuration problem. If you choose the Lemur Pro for Windows, follow System76’s model-specific guidance and treat the installation as unsupported by the manufacturer.

Set up Linux

On the Lemur Pro, start with the supported Pop!_OS or Ubuntu path before experimenting with another distribution. On the Framework, check the current Linux hardware notes for your generation, then test suspend, Wi-Fi, audio, cameras, fingerprint readers and external displays before relying on the laptop for work. Keep a bootable installer and a second computer available while changing distributions.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Buying by processor name alone

Two laptops with similarly named processors can behave differently because of cooling, power limits and display settings. Use sustained-load tests and battery measurements for the exact model whenever your work is intensive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every Windows installation is supported

System76 explicitly limits its Windows position to the ability to install; it does not guarantee success, quality or support for any Windows version. Check model-specific requirements before choosing the Lemur Pro for a Windows-only workflow.

Underestimating the total cost of a mini PC

The NUC’s approximate $800 retail figure covers the listed computer configuration. Add the monitor, input devices, audio, camera, cables and any storage or memory expansion required for your setup.

Choosing a large laptop for a travel-heavy routine

The ThinkPad X9 15’s larger OLED panel is useful at a desk, but its size and price make it less convenient for frequent travel. If you carry the computer daily, compare the XPS 14, Lemur Pro and Framework Laptop 12 first.

Expecting modularity without checking parts

Framework’s expansion-card system makes port changes practical, but compatibility still depends on the cards and laptop generation you own. Confirm that the replacement card supports your desired connector, operating system and performance requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recommendations by user type

  • Windows professional who wants a premium laptop: Dell XPS 14 (2026), unless long sustained workloads outweigh its portability and display options.
  • Business user who needs a large screen and many ports: Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition.
  • Linux developer or administrator: System76 Lemur Pro, with Pop!_OS or Ubuntu as the supported starting point.
  • Student or technical user who values repairs and a convertible: Framework Laptop 12.
  • Home-office or fixed workstation owner: ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5, provided you already have or are willing to buy the necessary peripherals.

Bottom line

There is no single replacement for a new Mac because the alternatives optimize different things. Buy the Dell XPS 14 for the broadest premium Windows fit, the ThinkPad X9 15 for screen area and business ergonomics, the Lemur Pro for supported Linux-first use, the Framework Laptop 12 for repairability and evolving ports, or the ASUS NUC 14 Pro U5 for a compact Windows desk setup. Recheck configuration, price, stock and operating-system support for the exact model in your region before ordering.
