Best alternatives to a built-in-cable power bank for laptops and phones

The most flexible alternative to a power bank with a permanently attached cable is a conventional USB-C Power Delivery (PD) laptop power bank with open USB-C ports and a separate, correctly rated cable. Choose about 60W for a 13-inch MacBook Air or similar ultrabook, 100W or more for a larger MacBook Pro, gaming laptop or USB-C workstation, and up to 140W only when the laptop supports USB PD 3.1 EPR. Phones usually need just 20W to 30W.

What to use instead of a built-in-cable power bank

A detachable-cable USB-C PD power bank is the best all-purpose replacement for a built-in-cable model. You can replace a damaged cable, carry a longer or shorter lead, select a cable for a particular laptop, and use the bank with more than one connector type. The bank should have at least one USB-C port that supports output, not merely USB-C input for recharging the battery.

Belkin defines a USB-C power bank as “a portable battery with at least one USB-C port for input and output.” USB Power Delivery is the common fast-charging standard used by Apple, Google, Samsung and most laptop makers. In practice, compatibility still depends on the laptop accepting charging over USB-C and on the bank, cable and charger negotiating a supported power level.

Why a detachable cable is usually better

  • Serviceability: A failed cable does not make the entire power bank unusable.
  • Correct rating: You can use a 60W, 100W or 240W cable to match the output you need.
  • Reach: A longer lead is easier to use with a laptop on a desk or in an airplane seat.
  • Compatibility: You can carry USB-C-to-USB-C for modern devices and a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for older iPhones.
  • Less cable wear: The bank can stay protected in a bag while the replaceable cable takes the bending and plugging.

How many watts do you need?

Match the bank’s maximum output from one USB-C port to the laptop’s required input. A bank’s combined output number is not enough: a “145W” label may describe the total across several ports while the port connected to your laptop is limited to 100W or less.

Device type Practical single-port target What to check
Phone, earbuds or small accessories 20W–30W USB-C PD; PPS can improve compatibility or charging behavior on some phones, but verify the bank’s specification.
13-inch MacBook Air or similar Windows ultrabook About 60W–65W The laptop must support USB-C PD input; a 65W bank leaves useful headroom for a second device only when the bank’s power-sharing rules allow it.
14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro, larger ultrabook or USB-C workstation 100W or more Use a 5A, 100W-rated USB-C cable for full-speed charging on most ultrabooks.
Gaming laptop or other high-draw USB-C laptop 100W–140W, if supported Confirm the laptop’s own USB-C charger specification. Some gaming laptops still require a proprietary input for maximum performance.
Largest laptops that explicitly support USB PD 3.1 EPR Up to 140W Use a 240W-rated 5A EPR cable and a bank that actually provides 140W on the connected port.

Belkin says 20W to 30W is generally enough for current phones. A phone may display “fast charging” at a lower or higher negotiated level depending on its protocol, battery state and temperature. Laptop charging is more demanding: if the bank supplies less than the laptop requests, the computer may charge slowly, hold its battery level, or continue to lose charge while under heavy load.

Best alternatives by use case

Most flexible: a conventional 65W bank with a separate cable

Anker’s 537 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K), model A1379, provides 65W total output and can charge a laptop and another device simultaneously. When both USB-C ports are occupied, Anker specifies 45W on USB-C 1 and 20W on USB-C 2. It is listed as compatible with phones, tablets and USB-charged devices including the 2020 MacBook Air and iPhone 13 Pro.

This is the balanced choice for a 13-inch ultrabook owner who wants a replaceable cable and a second-device output. The important limitation is the split: connecting a phone can reduce the laptop port to 45W, so a laptop that normally expects 60W may charge more slowly during simultaneous use.

Best middle ground: 67W and 20,000mAh with several outputs

UGREEN’s Nexode 20,000mAh 67W model combines a built-in USB-C cable with an additional USB-C port and a USB-A port. UGREEN specifies 67W maximum output, charging for three devices at once, pass-through charging, and 72Wh capacity. The integrated cable is rated for more than 10,000 bends.

It suits a traveler who wants laptop, phone and earbuds charging in one unit and accepts the convenience of an attached lead. The extra USB-C port means the built-in cable is not the only way to charge, but replacement is still less straightforward than with a fully detachable-cable bank.

For larger laptops: the 100W-to-145W class

UGREEN’s Nexode 145W 20,000mAh model specifies up to 100W through its integrated USB-C cable, 45W through a second USB-C port and up to 33W through USB-A. Its 145W figure is a combined maximum, not 145W from the integrated cable. UGREEN lists three-device charging and support for mainstream protocols used by MacBook, iPad, iPhone, Galaxy, Huawei and Xiaomi devices. With an 80W-or-higher PD charger, UGREEN states that the bank can recharge in about 1.5 hours.

For 140W USB PD 3.1 EPR laptops

Belkin lists a Laptop Power Bank 25K with 25,000mAh capacity, 92.5Wh of energy, two USB-C ports and one USB-A port. It provides up to 140W using USB PD 3.1 EPR and is aimed at 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models as well as phone charging.

Belkin’s guidance says a 240W-rated USB-C cable is required to unlock 140W-or-higher EPR output. Buy this class only after checking the laptop’s own charger specification and confirming that the laptop accepts USB-C PD at the advertised level. A high-capacity bank cannot force a laptop to draw 140W if the computer negotiates a lower limit.

For phones and light tablets only: compact banks

Anker’s A1637 combines a power bank, AC plug and a 0.82-foot built-in USB-C cable, with up to 30W output. Anker notes compatibility with selected laptops and says older iPhones require a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. It also states that 30% to 45% of stored energy can be lost in the battery cells and conversion circuitry; a 10,000mAh unit therefore delivers an estimated 5,500mAh to 7,000mAh to devices.

TechRadar’s 2025 roundup describes Anker’s Nano 10K retractable-cable model as convenient because the cable is always attached, but lists 15W total output. That wattage is suitable for phone backup and some light tablets, not as a general laptop replacement. A retractable cable solves cable-carrying hassle, but it does not increase the bank’s power capability.

Capacity: compare Wh, not only mAh

Milliamp-hours describe charge quantity at a stated battery voltage; watt-hours describe energy. Two banks with the same mAh rating can deliver different usable energy if their cells, voltage conversion and electronics differ. Use the maker’s Wh figure when it is provided, then account for conversion losses and the device’s own charging efficiency.

Capacity is not the same as the number of complete laptop charges. Screen brightness, processor load, sleep state and whether the laptop is operating while charging all affect how much energy reaches the battery. Treat a bank’s stated capacity as a comparison figure, not a guaranteed number of full charges.

Cable requirements for 60W, 100W and 140W

The cable is part of the charging system. Belkin’s cable guidance is:

Power level Cable requirement Typical use
Up to 60W 3A USB-C cable rated for 60W Phones, tablets, earbuds and many smaller laptops.
Up to 100W 5A USB-C cable rated for 100W Full-speed charging on most ultrabooks and larger USB-C laptops within their limits.
140W or higher EPR 5A, 240W-rated USB-C EPR cable USB PD 3.1 EPR banks and laptops that negotiate 140W or more.

A cable with the right connector shape can still be electrically unsuitable. Check the printed or listed wattage, use USB-C-to-USB-C for USB-C PD laptop charging, and do not assume a cable included with a phone supports 100W or 240W. With a detachable bank, label high-power cables in your travel kit so a low-rated spare is not used accidentally.

How to choose the right alternative

  1. Read the laptop’s charger label or technical specification. Find the required wattage and confirm that USB-C Power Delivery is accepted as an input. If the manufacturer lists only a proprietary charging connector, a USB-C bank may not replace the laptop charger.
  2. Choose the single-port output. Start around 60W for a 13-inch ultrabook, move to 100W for larger USB-C laptops, and consider 140W only for a documented USB PD 3.1 EPR requirement.
  3. Check power sharing. Find the output assigned to each port when two or three devices are connected. The Anker 537 example drops to 45W on its first USB-C port and 20W on the second when both are used.
  4. Select capacity by trip length and load. Compare Wh and physical size, not just mAh. A 20,000mAh or 25,000mAh bank is generally a more substantial laptop solution than a 10,000mAh phone backup, but actual runtime depends on conversion and laptop use.
  5. Match the cable. Use a 60W 3A cable for lower-power devices, a 100W 5A cable for most ultrabooks, or a 240W 5A EPR cable for 140W-class output.
  6. Check recharge requirements. A large bank may need a high-wattage PD wall charger to refill quickly. UGREEN specifies about 1.5 hours for its 145W model when paired with an 80W-or-higher PD charger.
  7. Confirm port layout and travel practicality. Count USB-C and USB-A ports, note whether the cable is integrated or detachable, and verify the bank’s dimensions, weight and airline rules for your route.
  8. Test before relying on it. Connect the bank with the intended cable, check that the laptop reports charging, then add the phone or accessories you expect to carry. Observe whether the laptop remains charging when both ports are occupied.

Built-in cable versus detachable cable

Consideration Built-in cable Detachable cable
Convenience Always attached and immediately available Requires carrying a separate lead
Replacement Damage to the cable may require replacing or servicing the bank Replace the cable independently
Reach and connectors Fixed length and connector Choose length and USB-C-to-other-connector options
High-power flexibility Check the integrated cable’s exact rating; one cable may be limited to one port Use a rated 100W or 240W cable appropriate to the bank
Multi-device use Convenient when extra ports are available, but output is still shared Several cable types can be carried for different devices

An integrated cable is not inherently inferior. It is a sensible choice for a traveler who values speed of setup and has a device mix that fits the cable’s rating. The detachable option is stronger when a laptop is central to the trip, when cable length matters, or when you want a replaceable high-power lead.

Common problems and fixes

The laptop says “plugged in” but the battery still falls

  • Check whether the bank’s single-port output is below the laptop’s demand.
  • Disconnect other devices and test the laptop alone; power sharing may have reduced the port output.
  • Replace the cable with one rated for the required wattage, especially if attempting 100W or 140W.
  • Reduce heavy workloads temporarily. A laptop using more power than the bank supplies can continue discharging while connected.

The bank does not charge the laptop at all

  • Confirm that the laptop accepts charging over USB-C PD rather than using USB-C only for data or display.
  • Use the bank’s USB-C output port, not a USB-C input-only port.
  • Try a known-good USB-C-to-USB-C cable with an appropriate power rating.
  • Wake the bank by pressing its power button, if its instructions require that step.

Charging becomes slow when the phone is connected

Look up the bank’s power-sharing table. A multi-port bank can reserve or redistribute power when another device is added. The 65W Anker model, for example, specifies a 45W and 20W split with both USB-C ports in use; that is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault.

The 140W bank delivers less than 140W

  • Use a 240W 5A EPR cable.
  • Verify that the laptop supports USB PD 3.1 EPR at 140W.
  • Connect to the port designated for the highest output.
  • Check whether another device is consuming power.
  • Remember that the negotiated level can fall as the laptop battery fills or if temperature and safety controls intervene.

The compact bank runs out quickly

A 10,000mAh phone-first bank is not a small version of a laptop bank. Anker’s stated 30%–45% conversion loss for the A1637 illustrates why the usable amount is lower than the label. For laptop travel, move to a higher-capacity bank with a suitable wattage rating rather than judging capacity by mAh alone.

Bottom line for each type of traveler

  • 13-inch ultrabook owner: Choose a detachable-cable 60W–65W USB-C PD bank, or a 67W multi-device model if you also charge a phone and earbuds.
  • 14-inch or 16-inch laptop owner: Choose a 100W-class bank and carry a 100W 5A cable. Check the output of the exact port you will use.
  • Gaming or workstation user: Choose 100W or more only if the laptop’s USB-C input supports it, and verify whether full performance still requires the original charger.
  • 140W USB-C laptop user: Choose a documented 140W PD 3.1 EPR bank, a 240W 5A EPR cable and a laptop that explicitly supports that level.
  • Phone-first traveler: A compact 10,000mAh, 20W–30W bank is easier to carry; do not expect a 15W or 30W phone bank to substitute for a laptop charger.
