Short answer: The Geekom A5 2025 Edition is the best value alternative for everyday browsing, office applications and light gaming. Choose the Geekom A6 for heavier multitasking and four 4K displays, the Beelink EQi for Thunderbolt 4 and office connectivity, the GMKtec M5 Ultra for dual 2.5GbE networking, or the Minisforum UM760 Slim for USB4 and stronger integrated graphics. The specifications and prices discussed here are dated US-market snapshots, so confirm the exact configuration, stock status, operating system and warranty before ordering.

Quick comparison of the leading BMAX alternatives

A mini PC is a sensible replacement for a budget BMAX system when you already have a monitor or television, keyboard and mouse. The models below cover the main reasons buyers move up from an entry-level box: more CPU headroom, faster networking, modern display connectivity, additional storage options or better integrated graphics.

Which alternative is right for your workload?

Geekom A5 2025 Edition: the value starting point

The A5 is the closest fit for someone who wants a modest, uncomplicated replacement for a budget BMAX computer. Tom’s Guide selected it as its best mini PC on a budget and reported using it for a month as a daily driver for browsing, office work and light gaming. That kind of workload is where a Ryzen 5 mobile processor and 16GB of memory make sense: browser tabs, video calls, documents, spreadsheets and cloud applications can run together without requiring a higher-end CPU.

Configuration details need checking because the published listings do not agree on capacity. Tom’s Guide specifies 512GB of storage, while TechRadar lists a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD and 16GB of upgradeable RAM. Treat the exact drive and memory combination as a seller-specific detail rather than assuming every A5 carries the same parts. The listing also identifies six USB ports, an SD-card reader, 8K output and a three-year warranty, useful features for a desk that regularly connects external drives, cameras or peripherals.

Choose the A5 when value and expandability matter more than the highest integrated-graphics performance. It is not the natural choice for sustained creative rendering, large virtual machines or a four-screen workstation.

Geekom A6: the strongest all-rounder

The A6 is the balanced upgrade when your work regularly moves beyond basic office applications. Its Ryzen 7 6800H and Radeon 680M provide more parallel-processing and graphics capacity than the entry-level option, while 16GB DDR5 and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD leave useful room for applications and local files. TechRadar also lists USB4, 2.5GbE and Wi-Fi 6E, with support for four 4K displays.

That combination suits a developer or analyst running several heavyweight browser windows, a large spreadsheet, communication software and occasional photo or video work at the same time. TechRadar describes it as one of its strongest all-rounders and says it handles Microsoft Office and light use of Adobe Creative Suite applications comfortably. The four-display capability is particularly valuable if you need a permanent dashboard, reference screen and primary workspace without adding a discrete graphics card.

Buy the A6 when you want one compact machine to cover office work, moderate creative tasks and multi-monitor use for several years. Its higher performance is less important if your routine is limited to documents, email and streaming on one screen.

Beelink EQi: best for office connectivity

The EQi is designed around desk connectivity rather than user-upgradeable components. TechRadar lists an Intel Wildcat Lake 304 processor, 16GB LPDDR5, 500GB UFS 3.1 storage, Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5GbE and support for three 4K displays. Thunderbolt 4 can simplify a one-cable desk with a compatible dock, external storage or display chain, provided your dock and monitors support the required modes.

TechRadar’s reviewer calls the EQi highly tuned to an office environment and reports that Microsoft Office, Lightroom and web browsing felt surprisingly sharp. The fixed LPDDR5 memory and UFS storage make it less attractive to buyers who plan frequent upgrades, but they can be perfectly adequate for a managed work desk where the machine is replaced as a complete unit.

Select the EQi if Thunderbolt 4, three-screen office layouts and fast wired networking are more valuable to you than a removable NVMe drive or user-accessible memory. Check the 500GB capacity against your local-file needs before relying on it as a media library.

GMKtec M5 Ultra: networking and multitasking specialist

The M5 Ultra combines a Ryzen 7 7730U, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD with Radeon graphics, dual 2.5GbE ports and support for three 8K displays. The two network sockets are its defining feature. They allow separate wired links for a workstation and a storage or virtualization network, or a more flexible role in a home lab, subject to your switch, router and software configuration.

TechRadar also identifies dual M.2 slots. That gives the M5 Ultra a clearer upgrade path for adding or replacing NVMe storage than a system restricted to one internal drive. Two slots do not automatically mean a particular RAID mode or guaranteed thermal performance, so verify the manufacturer’s supported drive types before installing a second SSD.

This is the option to consider when your mini PC may become more than an office endpoint: a file-transfer station, small server, network appliance or multitasking desktop. If you only need one display and ordinary Wi-Fi, the extra network hardware may not justify choosing it over a simpler model.

Minisforum UM760 Slim: USB4 and graphics headroom

The UM760 Slim uses a Ryzen 5 7640HS with Radeon 760M graphics, 16GB DDR5 and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Its feature set includes USB4, 2.5GbE, Wi-Fi 6E and support for three displays. The HS-series processor and Radeon 760M make it a good middle ground for productivity, creative applications and lighter gaming when you want more graphics capability than a basic office mini PC.

USB4 is useful for high-speed external storage, docks and other compatible peripherals, but the actual speed and display behavior depend on the connected device and cable. Confirm that your intended dock can drive the number and resolution of monitors you plan to use. The UM760 Slim is a strong choice when you value a compact creative-work machine and do not need the A6’s four-display ceiling or the M5 Ultra’s second Ethernet port.

How to choose for home-office work

Documents, meetings and browser-heavy work

Start with 16GB of memory. Modern browsers, video conferencing, office suites and collaboration tools consume more memory when many tabs and background services remain open. The A5, EQi, A6, M5 Ultra and UM760 Slim all list 16GB, so the practical differences are processor margin, storage design and connectivity rather than basic multitasking capacity.

A Ryzen 5-class system is sufficient for routine office work; move to the A6 or M5 Ultra when you routinely compile code, manipulate large datasets, run containers or keep several demanding applications active. Processor model names alone do not determine responsiveness: cooling, power limits and storage activity also affect sustained performance.

Creative applications and light gaming

Integrated graphics share system memory with the CPU and are not a substitute for a dedicated gaming GPU. They can handle lighter games and GPU-accelerated creative tasks, but frame rates and render times vary with resolution, settings, drivers and thermal limits. The A6 and UM760 Slim are the most obvious choices in this group because their Radeon 680M and Radeon 760M graphics are explicitly identified, while the A5 is positioned for lighter gaming.

For sustained rendering, professional effects work or modern games at high settings, plan on a system with a discrete graphics card instead of expecting any of these compact machines to behave like a full-size workstation.

Planning 4K media playback and displays

Display-count claims describe the number of outputs a system can support, not a guarantee that every combination will run at your preferred refresh rate. Before buying, map each monitor or TV to a physical output and verify whether the dock, adapter or cable is active or passive. The A5 listing mentions 8K output; the A6 supports four 4K displays; the EQi supports three 4K displays; the M5 Ultra lists triple-8K support; and the UM760 Slim supports three displays.

For media use, check hardware decoding for the codecs and HDR formats used by your streaming server or local files. The available buying guides do not provide a standardized codec, HDR and noise matrix for every model, so do not infer identical playback behavior from an 8K or multi-monitor label. Confirm HDMI or DisplayPort behavior at the exact resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.

Mini PCs are most convenient when the screen and input devices already exist. A living-room setup may need a longer HDMI cable, infrared or Bluetooth control, automatic sleep settings and enough USB ports for storage and controllers. An office setup may benefit more from a dock, Ethernet and multiple displays than from a high maximum video-output resolution.

Ports, networking and expansion

Choose ports according to devices you will keep connected, not a maximum count on the product page. The A5’s six USB ports and SD reader are useful for cameras, card-based workflows and several legacy peripherals. Thunderbolt 4 on the EQi and USB4 on the A6 and UM760 Slim target high-speed docks and storage. These standards are related but not interchangeable in every feature; check the host, cable and accessory specifications together.

2.5GbE is worthwhile only when your router, switch, NAS or internet service can exceed gigabit speeds. The A6, EQi and UM760 Slim each list one 2.5GbE connection, while the M5 Ultra lists two. Wi-Fi 6E can reduce congestion on compatible 6GHz networks, but it does not improve range through walls and requires a matching access point and client configuration.

Expansion is clearest on the A5, which is listed with upgradeable memory, and the M5 Ultra, which has dual M.2 slots. The EQi’s LPDDR5 and UFS storage are listed as integrated components, so assume less user serviceability unless the seller states otherwise. DDR5 or PCIe 4.0 labels describe the technology, not the ease of access; inspect the service manual or warranty terms before opening a system.

Setup checklist after purchase

  1. Confirm the configuration. Check the delivered processor, memory, SSD capacity, operating-system edition and warranty against the listing before removing protective packaging. The A5’s published storage capacities differ, making this check especially important.
  2. Connect the display first. Use the direct HDMI, DisplayPort or USB4/Thunderbolt path recommended for your monitor. If you are using a dock, test one display before adding the others.
  3. Complete operating-system setup. Apply the current system updates, chipset package, graphics driver and network driver offered for your exact model. Keep the original recovery information before repartitioning the SSD.
  4. Test every port. Copy a large file through USB, read an SD card if fitted, connect Ethernet, pair Wi-Fi and wake the machine from sleep. Early testing makes a return or warranty claim easier if a port is defective.
  5. Validate your media workload. Play representative 4K files or streams, switch to the intended HDR mode and test audio through the TV, monitor or receiver. Check for dropped frames, handshake failures and unexpected refresh-rate limits.
  6. Measure your desk arrangement. Run your normal browser, office and creative applications together for an extended session. Watch for thermal throttling, fan noise or memory pressure before migrating all files.

Noise, heat and long-term reliability

Compact systems have less room for cooling than tower desktops. Published specifications in this comparison do not provide a standardized noise or sustained-performance test for all five models. Fan behavior can change with ambient temperature, power mode, dust and the number of displays attached.

Place the mini PC on a hard, open surface, keep intake and exhaust vents clear and avoid stacking it directly on a warm receiver or router. If you intend to run long renders, file transfers or virtual machines, test that workload while the return period is active. A short burst benchmark cannot reveal whether performance falls after several minutes of heat buildup.

For media playback, a quiet fan profile may matter more than peak benchmark speed. For office work, consistent wake-from-sleep behavior and stable video conferencing are often more valuable than a small performance advantage that is audible all day.

Price, operating system and warranty checks

The cited material treats prices as dated US snapshots but does not state a single current price for each configuration. Compare the complete delivered package: memory, SSD capacity, operating-system license, power adapter, shipping, tax and warranty length. A lower headline price can disappear if it includes less storage or no operating system.

The A5 listing specifies a three-year warranty. Warranty duration and support terms for the other models are not established in the cited specifications, so read the seller’s regional policy before purchase. Confirm whether support is handled by the manufacturer or marketplace seller, where replacement parts are shipped and whether opening the chassis affects coverage.

Operating-system inclusion is also not specified consistently. Do not assume that every barebones or region-specific listing includes the same Windows edition, activation status or recovery partition. If you plan to install Linux or use the device as a server, check driver support, firmware access and return conditions first.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

  • Buying on CPU name alone: Compare memory, storage type, ports and cooling alongside the processor. A faster chip cannot compensate for insufficient RAM or a storage design that does not fit your workflow.
  • Assuming every 4K or 8K claim is identical: Verify output connectors, refresh rate, HDR support, audio path and the number of simultaneous screens.
  • Ignoring upgrade limits: LPDDR5 and UFS storage are generally less replaceable than socketed memory and M.2 SSDs. Choose the capacity you need at purchase when components are fixed.
  • Overestimating 2.5GbE: The network port helps only when the rest of the network supports it. Otherwise, a reliable gigabit connection may perform the same for internet use.
  • Skipping sustained-load testing: Run your actual office, media or creative workload long enough to reveal heat-related slowdowns and fan noise.
  • Failing to verify regional terms: Prices, stock, configurations and warranty coverage can change by country and seller. Save the listing and serial-number information with your purchase records.

Final recommendation

Choose the Geekom A5 2025 Edition for the lowest-risk value purchase when your priorities are browsing, documents, streaming and light gaming. Step up to the Geekom A6 when you need stronger all-round performance or four 4K displays. Pick the Beelink EQi for a dock-centered office with Thunderbolt 4, the GMKtec M5 Ultra for dual-wired networking and storage flexibility, or the Minisforum UM760 Slim for USB4, Radeon 760M graphics and a three-display productivity setup.
