For the closest replacement, choose the BOOX Tab X C. It keeps the 13.3-inch page area, adds Kaleido 3 color, Android apps, 128GB storage and a bundled stylus. Expect the muted colors and refresh behavior that are normal for color E Ink, plus premium pricing that varies by region and bundle.
If you can accept a smaller page, the BOOX Note Air5 C is the more flexible value option: it combines a 10.3-inch color E Ink panel with Android 15, expandable storage, USB-C OTG and keyboard support. For the clearest A4 PDFs and most paper-like writing, a monochrome 13.3-inch E Ink device remains the stronger choice. Monitor-style e-paper displays and reflective LCD tablets make sense when your priority is laptop connectivity or smooth, saturated color rather than an all-day standalone note tablet.

What a 13-inch color E Ink replacement must do
A 13.3-inch panel is close to A4 size, so it can show most technical papers, sheet music and office PDFs at a useful scale without constant zooming. A smaller 10.3-inch screen can still annotate documents, but a full A4 page is less comfortable and usually requires smaller text or more panning.

The alternatives differ in seven practical ways:
- Page area: whether an A4 PDF fits at readable size.
- Color: muted color E Ink, monochrome gray, or full-color reflective LCD.
- Writing: pen latency, pressure response and the feel of the surface.
- Software: Android applications, a closed note ecosystem, or dependence on a host computer.
- Connectivity: USB-C, video inputs, storage expansion and keyboard options.
- Power: battery operation versus continuous power from a computer or charger.
- Availability: regional stock, bundles and prices that can change.

1. BOOX Tab X C: the closest same-size color option
The Tab X C is the most direct substitute when 13.3 inches is non-negotiable. Its Kaleido 3 panel preserves the large writing area needed for A4 papers, two-page layouts and large diagrams while adding color highlights and Android applications. The 128GB capacity is useful for a large PDF library, and the 5,500mAh battery is substantially more relevant to a standalone reader than the power requirements of a monitor-style alternative. Dual speakers also make it more tablet-like for spoken documents or media.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is the nature of color E Ink itself. Kaleido color is intended for accents, charts and highlighting rather than the brightness and saturation of an LCD. Refresh behavior is slower and can involve visible flashes or ghosting during rapid scrolling. It is a good match for deliberate page turns, handwriting and static documents, not for video or fast animated interfaces.
Check before ordering
- Confirm the current regional price and stock; neither is fixed by the specification.
- Check whether the advertised package includes the keyboard cover you need.
- Make sure the seller identifies the 13.3-inch color model, not a similarly named monochrome device.
- Test the PDF reader’s crop, contrast and split-page controls with your own documents during the return period.
2. BOOX Note Air5 C: smaller, expandable and app-friendly
The Note Air5 C is the practical choice when portability and software flexibility matter more than a full A4 view. Its 10.3-inch Kaleido 3 screen renders 4,096 colors, enough for color-coded notes, textbook diagrams and highlighted passages. Android 15 gives it access to a broader app workflow than a closed writing appliance, while 6GB of memory and 64GB of internal storage cover ordinary document libraries. A microSD slot lets you carry more files without relying on cloud storage.
USB-C OTG allows compatible accessories, and keyboard support makes the device more useful for short drafting sessions. The included stylus means the basic annotation setup does not depend on a separate purchase. The cost of that flexibility is page size: a complete A4 page will not be as comfortable as on a 13.3-inch panel, especially when margins, comments or two-page spreads are important.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Who should choose it
- Students who want color highlights and Android reading or reference apps.
- Travelers who value a lighter, smaller device over full-page A4 viewing.
- Readers who need microSD expansion or a keyboard-supported workflow.
3. E Ink 13.3-inch Digital Paper: the monochrome A4 specialist
If color is optional, E Ink’s current third-generation 13.3-inch A4-sized Digital Paper specification is the cleanest fit for dense documents. The 1,650 × 2,200-dot panel provides 207 dpi and 16 gray levels, a combination aimed at crisp text and diagrams rather than color rendering. The touch layer and EMR sensor recognize 4,096 pressure levels, giving pen strokes more expressive control than a basic capacitive stylus.

E Ink describes the product goal as providing “natural and familiar experiences of reading, annotating and note-taking” for a paperless workflow. That design brief explains its strengths: static pages remain easy to study, handwriting is central rather than an accessory, and monochrome contrast avoids the subdued color layer found on Kaleido screens.
When monochrome is the better trade
- Engineering, legal and academic PDFs where text sharpness matters more than colored figures.
- Long annotation sessions where a paper-like surface is more important than app variety.
- Users who want an A4 page without paying for color they rarely use.
Do not assume every 13.3-inch Digital Paper generation has identical software, ports or battery behavior. Confirm the exact model’s file formats, synchronization method and export workflow before buying.
4. DASUNG Paperlike 13K: e-paper for a computer desk
DASUNG’s Paperlike 13K takes a different approach: it is primarily a display for a laptop or desktop. The listed monochrome model uses a 13.3-inch 3,200 × 2,400 panel and states a 37Hz refresh rate. USB-C and Mini-HDMI make it suitable as an external screen for a computer that already provides the PDF reader, annotation application and file storage.

This arrangement avoids the limits of a built-in tablet operating system, but it also means the display alone is not a complete reading-and-note-taking solution. You will need a host computer, a compatible cable and software that recognizes your input device. DASUNG also lists a 13.3-inch color version; its exact capabilities should be checked separately rather than inferred from the monochrome Paperlike 13K.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

5. Acer EP0: a portable ePaper monitor with pen and touch
Acer positions EP0 as a 13.3-inch 3,200 × 2,400 ePaper portable display. The listing states up to 60Hz, pen and touch support, dual color and black-and-white modes, and a single-cable USB-C connection. Those features make it attractive when you want a large, daylight-friendly second screen that can also accept handwriting.
EP0 should be evaluated as a display accessory first. It does not automatically provide the document library, note application, synchronization or DRM support that a standalone Android tablet might. Your computer or phone remains responsible for those functions. Before purchase, check that your operating system exposes touch and pen events to the application you plan to use; a display can advertise pen hardware while a particular app ignores it.
6. reMarkable Paper Pro: writing first, general-purpose use second
Paper Pro is aimed at focused writing and sketching rather than broad tablet functionality. Creative Bloq reports a modified E Ink Gallery 3 system called Canvas Color, a frontlight and 12ms pen latency. The reported prices are $579 with Marker and $629 with Marker Plus. Those are package prices reported in that guide and can change by region or promotion.
Recommended Free Tools
The closed software model is the decisive limitation. There is no app store or web browser, and DRM-protected Kindle and Kobo ebooks are not supported. Personal PDFs and EPUBs, handwritten notebooks and sketches fit the intended workflow; readers who depend on Android apps, browser research or protected commercial ebooks should choose an open tablet instead.

Choose Paper Pro when
- Your priority is a quiet, distraction-free writing environment.
- You value low stated pen latency and a frontlight more than application breadth.
- Your documents are personal or DRM-free and can be transferred into its supported workflow.
7. RLCD tablets: smoother motion and real color
Reflective LCD (RLCD) keeps a daylight-readable, reflective approach but uses conventional LCD pixels. Android Central notes that RLCD can reach 120Hz, while the best E Ink displays often top out at 40Hz. RLCD can also show 16.8 million colors, compared with the 4,096 colors typical of color E Ink. Scrolling, zooming, animation and saturated illustrations therefore look much closer to a conventional tablet.
The cost is power behavior. LCD pixels refresh continuously, so an RLCD tablet needs ongoing power rather than relying on E Ink’s low-power static image. That makes it better for desk use, video, interactive diagrams and rapid navigation than for a device you expect to leave open all day on a single charge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose by workflow
You read full-page A4 PDFs most of the time
Start with a 13.3-inch device. The Tab X C preserves color and Android flexibility; monochrome Digital Paper prioritizes text clarity and writing feel. A monitor such as the Paperlike 13K or EP0 works if your documents already live on a connected computer.
You annotate in color but travel often
The Note Air5 C gives up page area in exchange for a smaller body, Android 15 and microSD expansion. It is the most balanced choice when color highlights and app access matter more than viewing an entire A4 sheet at once.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
You write more than you read
Paper Pro’s 12ms stated latency and closed interface favor concentrated handwriting. Digital Paper is the stronger large-format option when you need an A4 page and can work without color.
You need vivid diagrams or fast scrolling
Choose RLCD. Its 120Hz capability and 16.8 million colors address the two areas where color E Ink is weakest, but plan for continuous power.
You want to use a laptop as the source
Choose Paperlike 13K or EP0, then verify the video input, power arrangement and pen support for your computer. These products are not replacements for a tablet operating system; they are specialized displays.
Quick Recap
Buying and setup checklist
- Measure your documents. Open a representative A4 PDF and check whether you need full-page view, two-page view or frequent zooming.
- Decide whether color is functional. If color only marks highlights, Kaleido may be sufficient. If you need saturated charts or photographs, RLCD is the more appropriate technology.
- Confirm the input method. Check whether the package includes a stylus, whether the panel supports EMR or another pen system, and whether monitor models support touch and pen on your operating system.
- Check your content sources. Android tablets handle app-based workflows; closed devices may reject DRM-protected ebooks; monitor-style products rely on the host computer’s software.
- Plan storage. The Tab X C provides 128GB, while the Note Air5 C provides 64GB plus microSD. For other models, verify internal storage and transfer methods before assuming a large offline library will fit.
- Match power to your routine. A battery tablet suits reading away from a desk. USB-C monitors and RLCD devices need a connected power source, and a monitor’s cable may need to carry both video and power.
- Check the return policy. Test ghosting, refresh flashes, pen calibration, PDF cropping and your most-used applications with real files.
Important limitations to keep in mind
- Color E Ink is not an LCD replacement. Kaleido color is restrained, and fast scrolling can look less fluid.
- Size changes document ergonomics. A 10.3-inch reader can be excellent for notes yet still awkward for a full A4 page.
- Monitor and tablet categories are different. A monitor may have better computer connectivity but no independent ebook library or note application.
- Specifications vary by bundle and region. Verify current stock, keyboard inclusion, frontlight, pen support and software compatibility for the exact listing.
- Closed ecosystems limit content choice. Paper Pro’s lack of an app store and browser is beneficial for focus but restrictive for app-based research and protected ebooks.
