Best alternatives for adding long-term memory to AI agents

The right long-term-memory layer depends on the kind of memory your agent must keep. Choose Mem0 for scoped personalization and cross-session recall in an existing application; Zep or Graphiti for changing facts, entities, relationships, and time-aware answers; Letta when memory management belongs inside a persistent agent runtime; LangMem when your application already runs on LangGraph; and Redis or another self-managed substrate when your platform team needs control over storage, topology, latency, and policy.

What you are really choosing

“Long-term memory” is not one feature and these products are not interchangeable vector-database wrappers. You are choosing a memory model, a write policy, a retrieval strategy, an integration boundary, and an operating model.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Memory representation: key-value records, vectors, temporal graphs, agent-managed working memory, archival memory, framework state, or a mixture of structured, text, metadata, and vector indexes.
  • Write and update semantics: automatic extraction, explicit agent edits, background consolidation, or application-owned writes. This determines how the system handles preferences, corrections, expiration, and contradictions.
  • Retrieval and reasoning: semantic similarity may be enough for “What does this user usually prefer?” It is not enough for “What was true last quarter, who changed it, and which other entities were affected?”
  • Integration: a hosted memory API, an independent runtime, or storage and checkpointing native to your existing agent framework.
  • Operations and governance: tenant isolation, data residency, retention, deletion, rollback, observability, access control, and the amount of infrastructure your team must run.

Start by writing down the questions your agent must answer after a session ends. If they are mostly stable preferences and prior instructions, a scoped semantic memory service is usually the shortest path. If they involve validity periods, linked entities, or evolving business facts, use a temporal model. If the agent itself must decide what to retain and revise, use an agent-runtime model. If you need complete control, own the substrate and the policies above it.

At-a-glance comparison

Option Primary memory model How memory is managed Best fit Main trade-off
Mem0 Key-value plus vector memory with user, session, agent, and application scopes Memory extraction and updates through a memory API; your application defines scope, consent, retention, and review rules Adding personalization and cross-session recall to an existing agent Less naturally suited than a temporal graph to relationship-heavy or time-valid reasoning
Zep / Graphiti Temporal knowledge graph combining semantic and episodic memory, entities, and community summaries Facts are interpreted and updated in temporal context Evolving facts, entity relationships, and questions about what was true when More architectural complexity than a simple vector-memory layer; verify hosted and open-source boundaries
Letta Agent-managed core or working memory plus archival memory inside a stateful runtime The agent explicitly promotes, edits, and retrieves memory Long-running autonomous agents and workflows where memory behavior is part of the agent Prompt and runtime complexity; memory quality depends on consistent agent behavior
LangMem with LangGraph Semantic, episodic, and procedural memory integrated with graph state and storage Memory operations are designed alongside LangGraph execution and checkpointing Teams already using LangGraph that want framework-native persistence It is a framework choice, so your team may own more extraction, consolidation, and evaluation code than with a managed service
Redis Self-managed structured, vector, text, and metadata search substrate Your application defines extraction, schemas, promotion, retention, and conflict handling Platform teams needing control over topology, locality, latency, and operational tooling Redis does not decide what a conversation means or when a fact should be promoted

The options above solve different layers of the problem. A managed service can reduce implementation work, while a framework-native or self-managed design can keep state and policy closer to the rest of your system. Current pricing, API versions, service-level guarantees, supported databases, and deletion behavior vary and should be verified for the edition and region you plan to deploy.

Mem0: the fastest general-purpose memory layer

What it stores

Mem0 is described as a key-value and vector memory layer with scopes for users, sessions, agents, and applications. Those scopes let one agent remember a user preference across sessions without accidentally treating it as a global application fact. They also provide a place to separate transient session context from durable user or agent memory.

When Mem0 is the right choice

  • You already have an agent and want to add recall without adopting a new runtime.
  • Your dominant use case is personalization: preferences, recurring instructions, prior decisions, or user-specific context.
  • You need an API-oriented integration and can define the consent, retention, and deletion rules around it.
  • Your retrieval questions are primarily semantic rather than graph traversal or historical reconstruction.

The Mem0 paper reports a 26% relative improvement in its LLM-as-a-Judge metric over OpenAI, measured by the Mem0 authors in 2025. The same paper reports that its graph-memory variant achieved about a 2% higher overall score than the base configuration. These are results from that paper’s evaluation setup, not a universal ranking of memory systems.

Questions to settle before deployment

  • Scope: decide whether a memory belongs to a person, session, agent, or application. A user preference and a global policy should never share an unqualified namespace.
  • Consent: identify which information may be retained and how users can inspect or delete it.
  • Review: determine whether extracted memories are immediately trusted or placed in a review queue for sensitive domains.
  • Contradictions: define what happens when a new preference conflicts with an old one. “The user now prefers X” should not leave an equally authoritative record saying “the user prefers Y.”
  • Rollback: keep enough history to undo a bad extraction or an over-broad consolidation.

Mem0 is a strong default when you want a memory API rather than a new agent architecture. It is not a substitute for designing memory governance, even if extraction is automated.

Zep and Graphiti: memory for time, entities, and relationships

Why a temporal graph matters

Zep’s primary paper presents a temporal knowledge-graph architecture that combines semantic and episodic memory with entities and community summaries. The key advantage is context around a fact: when it became true, when it stopped being true, which episode introduced it, and how it relates to other entities.

This model is useful for questions such as:

  • Which contract was active when a customer opened a support case?
  • Who approved a change, and which project or dependency did it affect?
  • What did the agent believe last month, and what evidence caused that belief to change?
  • How are two people, products, or events connected across multiple conversations?

A nearest-neighbor search can retrieve text that mentions a person or date, but it does not inherently enforce temporal validity or traverse relationships. A temporal graph makes those dimensions explicit.

When to choose Zep or Graphiti

  • Your domain contains facts that expire, become superseded, or are valid only during a particular interval.
  • Answers require entity resolution and relationship traversal rather than one semantically similar passage.
  • You need to combine episodic events with summarized, higher-level community or topic context.
  • Investigating why a memory was retrieved is important enough to justify richer provenance.

Zep’s technical report describes experiments run in December 2024 and January 2025 and compares its approach with MemGPT on LongMemEval. Those experiments are informative, but their datasets, models, prompts, judges, and retrieval pipelines are not identical to other published evaluations.

Confirm which capabilities belong to hosted Zep and which belong to the open-source Graphiti project before selecting an architecture. Check supported databases, production support, upgrade paths, and the controls available for tenant isolation, deletion, and data residency. Letta (MemGPT): memory as part of the agent runtime

How the model works

Letta is a stateful agent harness built around agent-managed memory. The agent has a core or working tier for information that should remain readily available and an archival tier for information that can be retrieved when needed. Instead of treating memory as a passive index, the runtime gives the agent responsibility for deciding what to promote, edit, and recall.

Why teams choose it

  • The agent runs over a long period and must maintain an evolving internal state.
  • Memory decisions are part of the agent’s behavior, not just an ingestion pipeline.
  • You want the agent to summarize, revise, and organize its own durable context.
  • Your workflow benefits from an explicit distinction between always-available working context and searchable archive.

What to test carefully

Agent-managed memory introduces another source of nondeterminism. Test whether the agent actually promotes important facts, edits stale ones, retrieves archival records at the right time, and avoids filling its working context with low-value details. Prompt design, tool permissions, and runtime state all influence the result. The canonical material does not establish a directly comparable Letta benchmark score, so choose it for this control model rather than for an unsupported universal performance claim.

LangMem with LangGraph: framework-native persistence

Why integration is the attraction

LangMem is described as LangChain’s SDK for semantic, episodic, and procedural long-term memory, integrated with LangGraph’s checkpointer and storage model. If your application already uses LangGraph for execution, this keeps memory operations close to graph state, checkpoints, and node-level workflow logic.

Best-fit workloads

  • Graph-based agents that already use LangGraph for durable execution or checkpoints.
  • Applications that need several memory types: semantic facts, episodic events, and procedural instructions.
  • Teams that prefer framework-level composition over introducing a separate hosted memory service.

Questions to answer before standardizing

  • Who owns extraction quality: the SDK defaults, your graph nodes, or a separate background worker?
  • How will long-term memories be consolidated when many checkpoints contain overlapping facts?
  • How will separate tenants, users, and agent instances map to stores and namespaces?
  • What tooling will operators use to inspect, correct, delete, and replay memory events?

LangMem reduces integration friction for LangGraph teams, but it is not automatically a turnkey replacement for a managed memory service. Compare the amount of storage, evaluation, governance, and operational code your team must own.

Redis: own the memory substrate

What Redis provides

Redis technical guides describe combining structured storage with vector, text, and metadata search for agent-memory workflows. Integrations are described for LangChain, LangGraph, and OpenAI. This makes Redis a flexible substrate on which you can implement several memory models rather than a product that dictates one.

When self-management wins

  • Your platform team needs control over topology, latency, locality, or deployment environment.
  • You have existing Redis operational expertise, monitoring, backup, and access-control processes.
  • Your data model is specialized enough that fixed memory semantics would be restrictive.
  • You need to combine exact filters and structured fields with semantic or full-text retrieval.

What remains your responsibility

Redis does not determine whether a conversation expresses a durable fact, when that fact should be promoted, or how contradictory records should be resolved. You must design the extraction pipeline, schema, embedding strategy, retention rules, access controls, evaluation set, and deletion workflow. You also need to decide whether updates are synchronous with a user request or processed asynchronously.

How to choose among the five approaches

  1. Choose Mem0 if your primary outcome is scoped personalization and cross-session recall in an existing application.
  2. Choose Zep or Graphiti if facts change over time or answers depend on entities, relationships, and temporal validity.
  3. Choose Letta if the agent runtime itself should decide what stays in working memory and what moves to an archive.
  4. Choose LangMem if LangGraph is already the execution and persistence framework and you want memory close to graph state.
  5. Choose Redis or another self-managed store if infrastructure control and custom policy matter more than turnkey memory formation.

A practical tie-breaker

If two options appear to fit, classify the hardest query your system must answer. “What did this user ask for before?” favors semantic or episodic recall. “What preference applies now?” requires update and recency rules. “Which entities were connected during a particular period?” favors a temporal graph. “What should the agent keep in its active context?” favors an agent-managed runtime. “How do we enforce our own storage and locality requirements?” favors a self-managed substrate.

Design the memory contract before integrating a product

1. Define scopes and ownership

Write an explicit scope for every memory record. Typical scopes include user, session, agent, application, tenant, and workflow. Record who owns the data, who may read it, and who may modify or delete it. Namespace collisions are a common source of accidental disclosure: a fact extracted from one user session must not become application-wide guidance merely because it was stored in a shared index.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Separate memory types

  • Semantic memory: relatively stable facts, preferences, or profile attributes.
  • Episodic memory: events, conversations, decisions, and their timestamps.
  • Procedural memory: instructions for how an agent should perform a task.
  • Working memory: the small set of facts that should remain in the active prompt.
  • Archival memory: durable material that is searchable but not always injected.

Keeping these categories distinct makes retention and retrieval policies easier to reason about. A temporary troubleshooting detail should not silently become a permanent user preference.

3. Decide when writes happen

There are three common patterns. Synchronous writes save a memory during the user request and make it available immediately, but add latency and risk persisting an unreviewed interpretation. Asynchronous writes queue extraction after the response, reducing user-facing latency but creating a window in which the next turn cannot see the new memory. Explicit writes ask the agent or user to confirm a memory, increasing control at the cost of interaction complexity.

Whichever pattern you choose, preserve the source event, extraction time, confidence or review status, and the operation that created or changed the record. Those fields are essential when an incorrect memory must be explained or rolled back.

4. Make retrieval intentional

Retrieve only the memory needed for the current task. Combine semantic similarity with exact filters for tenant, user, time range, entity, or memory type. Set a relevance threshold and a maximum number of records. Injecting every related memory can crowd out the current task and increase the chance that stale or conflicting facts influence the answer.

5. Handle contradictions and time

Do not overwrite a fact without preserving its history when the domain needs auditability. Store validity intervals or supersession links for facts that change. If a user changes a preference, mark the prior value as superseded rather than leaving two equally authoritative values in retrieval results. For high-impact decisions, require evidence or human confirmation before a new record becomes authoritative.

6. Build deletion and correction paths

A production memory system needs more than a delete button in the UI. Define how deletion propagates through primary records, vector indexes, graph edges, summaries, caches, backups, and derived evaluations. Test correction and rollback with the same seriousness as insertion. A user who revokes consent should not continue to receive a previously generated summary from a secondary index.

Cost, latency, and operational trade-offs

No common price or latency table is established across these systems. Real cost depends on model calls for extraction and consolidation, index and storage volume, query frequency, retention period, network placement, and the engineering effort required to operate and evaluate the system.

  • Managed memory APIs can shorten implementation time, but extraction and consolidation may create additional model calls and usage charges.
  • Temporal graphs can improve relationship-aware answers, while entity resolution, graph maintenance, and temporal updates add processing and operational complexity.
  • Agent runtimes may spend more prompt and tool budget on memory management because the agent decides what to retain and retrieve.
  • Framework-native memory can reduce integration overhead for an existing stack, but your team may own more storage, evaluation, and governance code.
  • Self-managed substrates provide topology and locality control, but staffing, backups, upgrades, schema migrations, observability, and incident response remain your responsibility.

Measure p50 and p95 write and retrieval latency under realistic concurrent load, along with model-token overhead and the rate of incorrect memories. A fast search that repeatedly injects stale facts is not a successful memory system.

How to evaluate memory quality fairly

Use the same workload for every candidate

The Mem0 and Zep papers report useful but non-equivalent experiments. Mem0 reports the 26% relative LLM-as-a-Judge improvement and approximately 2% graph-memory uplift in its own setup. Zep reports comparisons with MemGPT in its technical report and LongMemEval setup. Different datasets, models, prompts, judges, and retrieval pipelines mean those numbers cannot be converted into one universal ranking.

For a buying decision, run the same scenarios against every shortlisted system:

  • Multi-session personalization with a preference that later changes.
  • Contradictory statements separated by several sessions.
  • Facts with explicit start and end dates.
  • Entity aliases and relationships introduced in different conversations.
  • Deletion, correction, and tenant-isolation requests.
  • Long conversations where only a small subset of memories is relevant.

Score more than answer accuracy

  • Recall: did the system find the needed memory?
  • Precision: did it avoid injecting irrelevant or stale records?
  • Temporal correctness: did it select the fact valid for the requested period?
  • Update correctness: did a new fact supersede the old one appropriately?
  • Provenance: can an operator identify the source event and transformation?
  • Governance: can the system enforce deletion, isolation, and retention requirements?
  • Operational behavior: what happens during index lag, a failed write, a duplicate event, or a partial outage?

A staged rollout plan

  1. Inventory memory use cases. List the facts, events, procedures, and relationships the agent must retain. Mark each as temporary, session-scoped, user-scoped, tenant-scoped, or global.
  2. Create a labeled evaluation set. Include expected memories, distractors, updates, deletions, and date-sensitive questions before production data is involved.
  3. Choose the simplest model that answers the hardest query. Start with scoped semantic memory for personalization; move to a temporal graph when relationship and validity requirements are real rather than speculative.
  4. Implement observability first. Log memory writes, source events, retrieval filters, selected records, scores, and final injection content with appropriate redaction.
  5. Run shadow writes. Extract memories without changing agent responses, then inspect precision, duplication, scope errors, and contradiction handling.
  6. Enable controlled retrieval. Use tenant and user filters, relevance thresholds, limits, and feature flags. Compare answers with and without memory.
  7. Test correction and deletion. Verify that revoked or superseded information disappears from every retrieval path and derived summary.
  8. Expand gradually. Monitor latency, token usage, incorrect-memory rate, user corrections, and retrieval failures before widening the rollout.

Common failure modes and fixes

Everything becomes permanent memory

Symptom: casual statements, transient troubleshooting details, and speculative answers reappear weeks later. Fix: classify memory types, add confidence or review states, and require a retention decision before promotion.

Old and new preferences are retrieved together

Symptom: the agent gives inconsistent recommendations after a user changes their mind. Fix: model supersession or validity intervals, prefer the latest authoritative record, and retain history only for audit or temporal questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-tenant leakage

Symptom: a semantically similar record from another user or tenant appears in context. Fix: enforce scope filters before similarity search, test isolation with adversarial identifiers, and keep namespaces explicit in every read and write path.

Retrieval overwhelms the prompt

Symptom: the agent sees many related memories but misses the current instruction. Fix: cap records and tokens, rank by task relevance, summarize only when provenance is preserved, and keep working memory separate from archival search.

Operators cannot explain an answer

Symptom: support teams see an incorrect response but cannot identify which memory caused it. Fix: retain source event IDs, timestamps, extraction operations, retrieval scores, and the exact records injected into the prompt.

A benchmark result is treated as a product guarantee

Symptom: a published percentage becomes the reason for a deployment despite different models or data. Fix: reproduce the same workload, model, evaluator, and retrieval settings across candidates and report uncertainty instead of claiming a universal winner.
