Start with Brave Search if you want a free search engine whose provider says it operates a built-from-scratch index and does not profile searches by default. Choose Kagi if you will pay for an ad-free service that combines anonymized traditional-index results with its own Teclis and TinyGem indexes, both aimed at high-quality, largely non-commercial pages. Choose Ecosia when environmental funding and European search infrastructure are priorities, but check which provider serves results in your country because Ecosia’s independent EUSP index is market-dependent.
What makes a search engine independent?
“Independent search engine” can describe several different things, and they are not interchangeable. A service may run its own crawler and ranking systems, protect your searches from profiling, remove advertising, or simply offer tools that make smaller websites easier to discover. The most useful distinction is the index model: where the pages in the results came from and who decides how they are ranked.

- Own index: The provider crawls pages, stores its own index, and creates its own ranking systems. This can reduce dependence on the dominant search indexes, although no index covers the entire web equally well.
- Blended index: The provider combines results requested anonymously from established indexes with results from its own crawlers. This can broaden coverage while still adding a distinct small-web layer.
- Provider-dependent results: The search interface may select different upstream indexes by country, language, or market. A service can therefore be independent in one region and dependent on another.
- Privacy independence: A company may avoid personal profiling even if it uses another company’s index. Privacy and index ownership should be evaluated separately.
For finding independent websites, the practical goal is usually to get beyond highly commercial result pages: personal blogs, specialist forums, documentation, local publications, university projects, and small organizations that do not have large search-optimization budgets. No provider documentation establishes a universal quality winner, so the strongest workflow compares results from at least two engines for important questions.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brave Search | Brave says its web index is built independently; a 2023 announcement described web results as 100% served from its own index. | Goggles, Discussions, search operators, and Bangs help rerank or narrow results. | Private by default according to Brave; ad-supported, with an optional premium service. | Brave’s 2023 milestone noted that image and video results were not yet entirely from its own index and that a Google fallback remained available. Treat the traffic figure from that announcement as historical. |
| Kagi Search | Blends anonymized requests to traditional indexes with Kagi’s Teclis web index and TinyGem news index. | Teclis and TinyGem crawl millions of domains and focus primarily on non-commercial, high-quality content. | Paid service with no advertising, according to Kagi documentation. | It is not a single-index model; the exact mix of sources can differ from Brave’s approach. Current plan prices are not established here. |
| Ecosia | Provider-dependent: Ecosia says results may come from Bing, Google, or the European Search Perspective (EUSP). | EUSP is intended to provide European, trustworthy infrastructure independent of existing technologies; coverage varies by market. | Advertising funds tree-planting and climate projects. Ecosia describes privacy-friendly goals, but the upstream provider still matters. | EUSP was documented as available in France, with expansion planned. Brave Search: the best free starting point for an independent index
Why it stands out
Brave’s defining claim is that its search service uses a built-from-scratch index rather than relying on a major external index for ordinary web results. Its help documentation also says the service is private by default and does not collect personal information to profile searches. That combination makes it the clearest first choice when “independent” means both independent crawling and reduced behavioral profiling.

Brave’s April 27, 2023 announcement said that every web result was then served by its own index, after removing Bing API calls that had represented about 7% of query results. The same announcement reported about 22 million queries per day at that time. Those are historical milestones, not a current traffic estimate. The announcement also said image and video results were not yet served entirely from Brave’s own index and that users could still enable a Google fallback, so media and unusual regional queries deserved extra checking.
Tools for reaching smaller sites
- Quotation marks: Put an exact phrase in quotation marks to find pages using that wording, such as
"self-hosted photo archive". - Minus terms: Exclude dominant meanings or commercial noise with a minus sign, such as
rust audio recorder -amazon. - Site filters: Restrict a search to a domain or domain family with an operator such as
site:edu climate adaptation field notes. - Goggles: Apply a community-created ranking configuration when you want to boost technical blogs, independent publishers, or another defined niche. A Goggle changes ordering; it does not create new coverage.
- Discussions: Use discussion-oriented results when first-hand conversations or forum threads are more useful than polished commercial pages.
- Bangs: Send a query directly to another site when you already know where a specialist collection is hosted. This is a routing feature, not evidence that Brave’s index contains every page on that site.
How to use Brave for a small-web search
- Begin with the subject and one uncommon detail. For example, search
"zine archive" risograph maintenancerather than the broad phraseprinting. - Add quotation marks around a distinctive phrase from a title, error message, book, or technical term.
- Remove recurring commercial results with one or two minus terms, such as
-shopor-course, only after seeing what is being excluded. - Use
site:when you know the type of organization likely to host useful material, such as a university, public library, or regional publication. - Open the Discussions view when the answer depends on lived experience, maintenance details, or unusual edge cases.
- Try a relevant Goggle if the standard ordering is dominated by large publishers. Read its description so you understand what it boosts or demotes.
- Repeat the query without the filter. Comparing filtered and unfiltered results helps reveal whether a niche ranking is hiding useful disagreement.
Where Brave may need a second opinion
An independent index can have uneven coverage by language, country, media type, and newly published pages. If a local business, obscure archive, or image-heavy subject produces thin results, run the same terms in another engine and search directly within likely specialist sites. Do not treat the existence of an own index as proof that every result is more accurate or less commercial.
Kagi Search: a paid, ad-free route to the small web
How Kagi’s model differs
Kagi documents a blended approach. It sends anonymized requests to traditional search indexes while also operating its own Teclis index and TinyGem news index. Kagi says those indexes crawl millions of domains and focus primarily on non-commercial, high-quality content. This is useful when you want broader baseline coverage but also want a deliberate layer aimed at independent publishing.

Because Kagi blends sources, it should not be described as a single fully independent index in the same sense as Brave’s own-index claim. Its advantage is selection: the service can combine conventional breadth with results its own systems identify as valuable outside the most commercial parts of the web.
Why the paid model matters
Kagi says it accepts no advertising. That removes advertisements from the result page and gives the company a revenue model that does not depend on selling ad placement. It is a paid service, but a current plan price is not established here; check Kagi’s live pricing before subscribing. The absence of ads does not by itself guarantee better ranking, and privacy terms should be reviewed for the account and region you use.
A practical Kagi workflow
- Run the same query you used in Brave without changing the wording. Keeping the query constant makes differences in coverage easier to see.
- Look for pages from small publishers, personal domains, technical notes, and specialist communities that are absent from ad-heavy result pages.
- Use Kagi’s result controls to remove an unhelpful domain or adjust how much prominence a source receives when the interface offers that control.
- For news, inspect whether TinyGem-style results surface specialist reporting rather than only the largest outlets.
- Compare the top results with Brave before accepting a disputed factual claim. A blended index can add useful pages, but it can also reflect the limitations of its upstream sources.
When Kagi is the better choice
- You search often enough that removing advertisements is worth a subscription.
- You want independent-web discovery without giving up the breadth of traditional indexes.
- You prefer a service designed around result quality rather than ad inventory.
- You are willing to verify current privacy terms and plan limits instead of assuming that “paid” automatically means anonymous.
Ecosia and EUSP: an environmental and European alternative
Understand the provider switch
Ecosia says it may return results from Bing, Google, or the European Search Perspective, depending on provider and market. That means the same search box can represent different index ownership in different countries. If your goal is specifically an independent index, identify which provider served the result before drawing conclusions about coverage or ranking.

EUSP is an index built by Ecosia and Qwant, based in Paris. Ecosia describes it as European infrastructure with its own ranking systems, intended to provide an independent alternative to existing technologies. The provider documentation identified France as an available market and said expansion was planned. Availability may have changed, so check the current country support rather than assuming EUSP is active everywhere Ecosia operates.

Why people choose Ecosia
Ecosia uses advertising revenue to fund tree-planting and climate projects. That gives the service a different priority from both Brave’s privacy-first positioning and Kagi’s subscription model. Ecosia also describes privacy-friendly practices as part of EUSP’s goals, but privacy and index independence still depend on the provider handling your query.
How to test Ecosia for independent-site discovery
- Check the service’s current documentation for your country and whether EUSP is available there.
- Search a distinctive small-web query, then inspect any indicator or documentation that identifies the underlying provider.
- Repeat the query in Brave or Kagi using identical wording.
- Record whether Ecosia surfaces regional publishers, European sources, or pages missing from the other engines.
- For high-stakes information, verify the original page and compare at least one independent result from another engine.
Which engine has its own index?
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Which service most clearly states that it operates its own general web index? | Brave Search. Brave’s product and help pages describe a built-from-scratch independent index and say it does not rely on Bing for its independent index. |
| Which service combines its own index with traditional sources? | Kagi Search. Its documentation describes anonymized traditional-index requests plus Teclis and TinyGem. |
| Which service may use an independent index only in some markets? | Ecosia. EUSP is independent, but Ecosia also says results may come from Bing or Google depending on provider and market. |
| Does an own index guarantee better results? | No. None of the provider materials establishes a controlled head-to-head quality winner. |
How to search the small web effectively
Use specificity before changing engines
Small websites often use precise language that broad queries erase. Include a product model, year, file format, place name, technical standard, or distinctive phrase. Search the words a specialist would actually write, not only the category name. Then make a second query with synonyms; a personal site may call the same object a “field notebook,” “lab log,” or “maintenance journal.”

Separate discovery from verification
The first useful page is a lead, not automatically a reliable source. Open several independent sites, check publication dates, follow citations, and look for agreement on the specific claim. If two engines return the same page, that shows ranking overlap, not independent confirmation.
Search by site type
- Technical questions: Try personal domains, project documentation, issue trackers, standards groups, and university subdomains.
- Local history: Add a town, county, archive, library, or newspaper name rather than searching only the subject.
- Creative work: Include terms such as portfolio, process notes, sketchbook, workshop, or bibliography.
- Practical repairs: Add the exact model number, symptoms, connector type, or service-manual phrase.
Use result diversity as a signal
Count how many different domains appear in the first page. Ten results from three parent companies indicate less diversity than ten results from ten unrelated publishers. This is not a quality score, but it helps identify when an engine is narrowing your view. Change the query, use a site filter, or compare another engine when domain diversity is poor.

A search engine can be private but dependent on an external index, independent in its crawling but ad-supported, or ad-free but paid. Decide which trade-off matters most before choosing:
Best Value
| Priority | Most suitable starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Own general web index and no-cost access | Brave Search | Regional and media coverage; whether a fallback is enabled. |
| Ad-free searching and a small-web-oriented layer | Kagi Search | Current subscription price, plan limits, and privacy terms. |
| Climate funding and possible European index infrastructure | Ecosia | Which provider and index serve your country and query. |
| Maximum confidence on an important claim | At least two engines | Whether the pages are genuinely independent and current. |
Common pitfalls and fixes
Assuming “independent” means unbiased
Every index has crawler limits, ranking choices, spam defenses, language gaps, and commercial incentives. Independence from one large provider does not remove those constraints. Fix this by checking multiple sources and reading the provider’s explanation of its index.
Confusing a privacy feature with an own index
Not profiling your searches protects your data; it does not tell you where results came from. Look for an explicit index description rather than inferring ownership from a privacy policy.
Treating a dated milestone as a current statistic
Brave’s approximately 22 million daily queries came from its April 27, 2023 announcement. It should not be quoted as current traffic. Likewise, the 2023 note about image and video coverage describes that point in time, not a permanent limitation.
Assuming Ecosia uses EUSP everywhere
Ecosia’s provider mix depends on market. Check the current documentation for your location and identify the provider before evaluating independence.
Using filters so aggressively that you hide the answer
Quotation marks, minus terms, and community ranking tools can remove relevant pages as well as noise. Run an unfiltered version of the query and compare the results whenever a search feels unusually sparse.
A repeatable two-engine method
- Write a precise query with the distinctive terms that a specialist page is likely to contain.
- Run it in Brave Search and note the first five distinct domains.
- Repeat it in Kagi or Ecosia without changing the wording.
- Compare domain diversity, publication dates, geographic coverage, and commercial concentration.
- Open the strongest pages and follow their citations or outbound links to primary material.
- Run one broader synonym-based query to catch pages that use different terminology.
- For a consequential decision, preserve the URLs and dates you relied on so you can recheck them later.
This method treats search engines as discovery tools rather than authorities. It also exposes the practical difference between an independent index, a blended index, and a market-dependent provider.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for different readers
- Choose Brave Search when you want the clearest own-index claim, private-by-default searching, and free access with tools for reranking and narrowing results.
- Choose Kagi Search when you value an ad-free interface and are comfortable paying for a blended service whose Teclis and TinyGem indexes target non-commercial, high-quality pages.
- Choose Ecosia when environmental funding or European search infrastructure is central, while checking which provider and index operate in your market.
- Use two engines when the claim matters. No available provider statement proves that one service consistently delivers the best results for every language, region, or topic.
