ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks, Claude Cowork scheduled tasks, Gemini Apps scheduled actions, and Microsoft Copilot Tasks can all support work that runs on a schedule, but they differ in how clearly they document background operation, which accounts qualify, and what connected apps or approvals are required. The right choice depends on the schedule you need, the apps your task must use, and the specific product surface available to your account—not just the assistant’s brand name.
What “without leaving a chat open” means
A scheduled task is a request set to run later, either once or on a recurring cadence. It can be useful for reminders, a daily briefing, a weekly report, recurring research, or a routine that checks information and prepares an update. The feature may run work in the background, but that does not guarantee every task can access every app, complete every action unattended, or succeed on every scheduled run.

Vendors describe different levels of background behavior. Anthropic explicitly says Claude Cowork scheduled tasks run remotely even when the computer sleeps or Claude Desktop is closed. Google says Gemini prepares scheduled-action content in the background. OpenAI documents scheduled tasks in ChatGPT, and Microsoft documents Copilot Tasks and Microsoft 365 scheduled prompts; their eligibility and setup conditions still apply. Treat these as product-documentation claims, not a comparative reliability test.

How the four assistant features compare
| Feature | Documented scheduling and background behavior | Key conditions |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks | One-time or recurring tasks, monitoring, daily updates, and supported event-triggered tasks. Some connected apps may be usable when available. | Availability, active-task limits, and recurrence options vary by account, app, and workspace. Inactivity, a need for additional action, or deleting the associated chat can pause a task. App permissions and approvals may limit actions. OpenAI’s feature details. |
| Claude Cowork scheduled tasks | Recurring or on-demand tasks can use configured connectors, skills, and plugins for briefings, reports, and research. Anthropic says runs continue remotely while the computer sleeps or Claude Desktop is closed. | Cowork is listed for paid plans. Anthropic describes web and mobile beta availability for specified plans, which may change as rollout evolves. Tasks cannot be tied to a folder on the user’s computer. Claude Cowork scheduling details. |
| Gemini Apps scheduled actions | Daily, weekly, and monthly actions, including news digests, creative inspiration, and learning suggestions. Google says content is prepared in the background for the scheduled time. | The feature is gradually rolling out. It requires a personal or qualifying work or school account and Keep Activity turned on. To use another app, that app must be connected. Gemini scheduled-action details. |
| Microsoft Copilot Tasks | Tasks can run at a chosen time or on a recurring schedule. Setup may request approvals needed for future unattended operation. | Check access and action permissions for the relevant account, and distinguish Copilot Tasks from Microsoft 365 scheduled prompts. Copilot Tasks details. |
Microsoft 365 scheduled prompts are a separate feature documented for Teams, Office.com chat, and Outlook; do not assume their setup or availability is identical to Copilot Tasks. See Microsoft’s scheduled-prompts documentation.

Choose based on the job you need done
For a task that must keep running while your computer is off
Claude Cowork has the clearest explicit statement in the cited documentation: scheduled runs continue remotely while the computer sleeps or Claude Desktop is closed. Google also says Gemini prepares scheduled-action content in the background, though that wording is not the same specific promise about a sleeping computer. For ChatGPT and Microsoft, confirm the behavior and availability shown for the exact feature and account you plan to use rather than inferring it from the assistant’s general capabilities.
For a daily, weekly, or monthly routine
Gemini Apps explicitly lists daily, weekly, and monthly schedules. ChatGPT supports recurring schedules, but the available frequency depends on plan; Microsoft Copilot Tasks supports a chosen time or recurring schedule. Claude Cowork supports recurring work, but check its current interface and your account for the cadence you need. If you need a schedule more frequent than daily, verify that exact interval before building a workflow around it.

For work involving other apps or tools
Check whether the specific app or connector is supported, connected, and authorized. ChatGPT may use some connected apps when available; Claude Cowork can use configured connectors, skills, and plugins; Gemini requires a connected app for actions that use another app. Microsoft actions can depend on permissions and setup approvals. A schedule alone does not grant access to mail, files, calendars, or other services.
For reminders or simple recurring content
A reminder, digest, learning suggestion, or draft update is a sensible starting point because it can be useful without granting broad action permissions. For tasks that send messages, modify records, or otherwise act in connected services, check what the assistant will do unattended and whether it will stop for approval.

Plan limits, rollout, and access to verify
ChatGPT task limits and frequency
OpenAI’s help page states active-task limits of 3 for Free and Go, 5 for Plus, 10 for Business and Edu, and 15 for Pro and Enterprise. It says other eligible plans may vary by account or workspace. The same page says eligible paid plans support recurring schedules as often as once per hour, while Free recurrence is no more than daily. These are OpenAI’s stated product limits, not universal caps or independent measurements; they can change, so confirm them on the current ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks page and in your account.
Claude Cowork eligibility
Anthropic lists Cowork as available on paid plans and describes web and mobile beta availability for specified plans. Because beta and rollout access can change, check the current Claude Cowork scheduling page for your plan and platform before relying on it.

Gemini account and activity requirements
Google says scheduled actions are gradually rolling out and require a personal or qualifying work or school account with Keep Activity on. Your account may not yet have the feature, and connected-app requirements apply when an action needs another app. Check Google’s Gemini Apps guidance for current eligibility.

Microsoft documents both Copilot Tasks and Microsoft 365 scheduled prompts, but they are not interchangeable names for one feature. Check whether your account exposes Copilot Tasks or scheduled prompts in Teams, Office.com chat, or Outlook, and verify the permissions needed for the intended action in the corresponding documentation.

- Start with one well-defined outcome. Specify what to prepare, the information it should use, when it should run, and how you want the result delivered. For example: “Every Monday morning, prepare a short update on these three topics using the connected sources I authorize.”
- Confirm access before scheduling. Connect only the apps or sources the task needs, review their permissions, and check whether your account or workspace administrator restricts them.
- Choose a supported cadence. Verify the exact frequency in the product surface you will use. Do not assume that another plan, app, or similarly named assistant feature has the same scheduling options.
- Handle approval prompts deliberately. If setup asks for authorization for later unattended work, review what is being authorized. Keep approval gates for actions that should not happen automatically.
- Inspect the first result and run status. Confirm that the output reflects the right sources and schedule. Check task history or status controls where available rather than assuming a scheduled run completed successfully.
- Keep the task maintained. Update it when its sources, desired output, or permissions change. In ChatGPT, inactivity, a need for additional action, or deleting the associated chat may pause a task; check its status if a run stops.
What to check when a task does not run as expected
- The task is missing or unavailable: Confirm that the feature has rolled out to your account, that your plan qualifies, and that you are looking in the right product surface.
- The task runs but lacks information: Check that the relevant connected app is supported, connected, authorized, and still accessible to the account or workspace.
- The task pauses or asks for action: Review its status and any approval or follow-up request. ChatGPT may pause tasks after inactivity, when additional action is needed, or if the associated chat is deleted.
- The schedule is wrong or unavailable: Check the exact cadence supported for your account and feature. Gemini documents daily, weekly, and monthly schedules; ChatGPT recurrence varies by plan; Microsoft describes chosen times or recurring schedules.
- The output looks stale or incomplete: Review the task instructions and sources, then inspect the next run rather than assuming that background operation guarantees fresh or complete information.
Bottom line for choosing
Choose by surface and workflow: Claude Cowork is the clearest documented fit when runs must continue while the computer sleeps or its desktop app is closed; Gemini explicitly lays out daily, weekly, and monthly actions; ChatGPT documents monitoring and recurring tasks with plan-dependent limits; and Microsoft separates Copilot Tasks from scheduled prompts in Microsoft 365. None of these product descriptions establishes that one assistant is more reliable or produces better results than the others, so verify access, permissions, and the exact schedule in your account before depending on unattended work.
