A premade avatar can get you live faster, while a DIY Live2D model can deliver a distinctive 2D look if you are prepared to separate artwork and learn rigging. Commissioning an artist and rigger costs the most, but it buys the greatest control over character design and presentation.
Your best choice depends on more than the download price. Compare the time to your first stream, the amount of customization, whether the model is 2D or 3D, which tracking software it supports, the technical skills required, the license terms, and how easily you can upgrade later.

What is the cheapest way to become a VTuber?
For most beginners, the lowest-cash route is a 3D avatar made in VRoid Studio. The software is free, includes ready-to-use presets and sliders, lets you draw textures, and exports VRM files. You can then load the VRM into a 3D tracking application such as VSeeFace. A webcam is the relevant physical accessory for webcam-based face tracking; the camera quality you need depends on the tracker, your lighting, and how much expression detail you want.

If your priority is going live immediately rather than editing a character, a free or inexpensive premade VRM or Live2D asset may be faster. The trade-off is that each listing can impose attribution, editing, commercial-use, or resale conditions. A paid commission is the most expensive option because it includes someone else’s illustration, design labor, and usually separate rigging work.
Affordable VTuber routes compared
| Route | Best for | Upfront cash cost | Time to first stream | Appearance | Customization | Tracking compatibility | Main technical work | License or upgrade watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free or premade asset | Testing the workflow quickly | Free to a low paid price, depending on the listing | Fastest when the file is ready to use | VRM 3D or Live2D 2D | Usually limited to the seller’s permitted edits | Depends on whether the file is VRM or Live2D | Installing the tracker and configuring scenes | Attribution, monetization, editing, redistribution, and resale rules vary by listing |
| VRoid Studio DIY | Lowest cash cost with editable 3D customization | Free software; optional assets and hardware add cost | Several hours to several days, depending on styling | 3D VRM | Strong control over presets, sliders, and textures | 3D applications such as VSeeFace | Styling, texture drawing, export, and tracking setup | Third-party assets keep their own licenses; detailed styling takes time |
| DIY Live2D | Creators who specifically want a 2D illustrated look | Free tier or trial for software; artwork and time are the major costs | Usually longer than a ready-made model | 2D Live2D | Very high if you create or commission suitable layered art | VTube Studio and other Live2D-compatible software | Separating art layers, drawing, parameter setup, and rigging | Free-version limits and commercial licensing depend on business category |
| Commission | Distinctive identity and professional art direction | Artist and rigger fees; directional guidance ranges from a few hundred to a few thousand US dollars | Weeks to months | Usually custom 2D, though custom 3D is also possible | Highest, subject to the contract | Specified by the artist or rigger during the project | Briefing, approvals, file delivery, and software setup | Scope, revisions, ownership, commercial rights, and delivery schedule must be written into the agreement |
These are route-level comparisons, not universal prices or schedules. A simple premade file can be more restrictive than an elaborate one, and a technically experienced creator may finish DIY work much faster than a first-time user.
Premade avatars: the fastest low-cost test
Choose the file type before you buy or download
A premade avatar is useful when you want to test microphone levels, facial tracking, scene layout, and streaming software before investing in original art. First identify whether the download is a VRM file, a Live2D model package, or only a static image. VRM is a 3D format and needs a 3D application. Live2D files are built for 2D animation software. A PNG or other flat image cannot provide the same tracking and expression behavior without additional tools.
What a listing license should answer
Do not treat “free” or “commercial” in a title as a complete license. Save the listing page and receipt, then verify each of these points:
- Is monetized streaming, advertising, memberships, or donations allowed?
- What exact attribution wording is required, and where must it appear?
- May you recolor, edit, add accessories, or commission someone else to modify the file?
- Is redistribution of the original or edited file prohibited?
- Is resale prohibited, including resale inside a bundle or as a tokenized asset?
- Are AI training, crypto-related use, or other special uses excluded?
- Does the download include editable source files, or only an exported model?
- Which tracker and operating systems are supported?
Rules differ even among models sold by the same marketplace. A cited BOOTH example permits personal and commercial use when attribution is included, allows edits with attribution, and prohibits resale. That is an example of one listing’s terms, not a standard BOOTH license.
Where 2D premade models fit
Live2D identifies nizima as its official marketplace for illustrations, Live2D data, VTuber models, streaming assets, and order-made commissions. It is a logical place to research 2D premade options, but you still need to read the current terms attached to each listing. Confirm that the model contains the files your chosen application expects and that the seller permits your intended monetization.

VRoid Studio DIY: the lowest-cost editable 3D route
What you get
VRoid Studio provides presets, sliders, texture-drawing tools, and VRM export at no software cost. You can adjust proportions, hair, clothing, colors, and facial details without learning 3D modeling from scratch. The result is an editable 3D character that can move with webcam tracking in a compatible application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This route is strongest when you value control over a recognizable character but can accept a stylized 3D appearance. It is not the fastest path to a highly bespoke silhouette: detailed hair, clothing textures, and custom accessories require patient iteration. Optional downloaded assets can improve the result, but each one introduces another license to check.
Step-by-step setup
- Install VRoid Studio. Start with a preset close to your desired body shape and face rather than changing every parameter at once.
- Build a readable design. Set a small color palette, choose a distinctive hairstyle or accessory, and check how the face looks at the camera distance you expect to use.
- Draw or import textures carefully. Keep copies of your original texture work. If you use downloaded items, record their licenses separately from your own creations.
- Export a VRM file. Use the export settings required by the 3D tracker you plan to use, and keep the editable project file in case you need to revise the model.
- Install a VRM-capable tracker. VSeeFace is one compatible 3D route. Import the VRM, select your webcam, and run its calibration process.
- Test movement and lighting. Check eye and mouth tracking, head turns, hand or body motion if available, and how the model behaves against your intended background.
- Add the model to your streaming scene. Confirm that the capture method, resolution, transparency or background removal, and audio sources work before your first public stream.
Hardware and tracking expectations
A webcam is the practical accessory for webcam-based 3D tracking. You do not need to buy an expensive camera solely because you are starting; stable framing, even lighting, and a clear view of your face often matter more than headline resolution. The exact quality needed varies with the tracker and the expression detail you want. Test your existing webcam first, then upgrade only if tracking is unstable or insufficient for your presentation.
License boundaries in a VRoid project
VRoid Studio’s free software does not grant automatic rights to every asset you can add. You can set terms for model, texture, and item data you create, while third-party presets and downloaded assets remain subject to their creators’ licenses. Keep a simple asset log containing the source, permitted uses, attribution text, and any prohibition on redistribution. This prevents a later redesign when a monetized channel outgrows a noncommercial asset.
DIY Live2D: a free software entry point with a larger learning curve
Why the workflow is different
Live2D directly animates a drawn illustration rather than a 3D mesh. To create a usable model, the artwork must be separated into layers that can move independently: eyes, mouth parts, hair sections, face elements, clothing, and other pieces need enough overlap to deform naturally. Those layers are then assigned parameters for head angle, eye movement, blinking, mouth shapes, breathing, and secondary motion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCustom Live2D work commonly involves both illustration and rigging. If you draw a single flattened image, you cannot recover all of the hidden parts needed for convincing motion without redrawing them. The preparation and rigging process can take weeks to months for a first-time creator, especially when the design has long hair, layered clothing, accessories, or complex expressions.

Cubism’s free and trial options
Live2D Cubism offers a FREE version for basic models and animation, plus a Pro trial described as a “42-day Trial.” The free tier has limits; once those limits are exceeded, restrictions can prevent saving. Plan a small test model first so you understand the limits before spending weeks on a full character.
Commercial rights depend on your business category. Live2D’s licensing guidance states that general users and small businesses with annual sales under 10 million yen may use FREE or PRO commercially, while larger businesses need PRO for commercial use. Treat that threshold as part of the licensing decision, not as a promise that every use is covered; review the current license for your situation.
Prepare a Live2D model for tracking
- Design for deformation. Decide which parts must move and draw the hidden areas behind hair, eyelids, sleeves, and accessories.
- Separate and name layers. Keep a clean source file with logical layer names so revisions do not break the rig.
- Import into Cubism. Build meshes and deformers for the movements you need rather than attempting every possible motion immediately.
- Create core parameters. Prioritize head angles, eyes, brows, mouth, and breathing; add physics and secondary motion after the core tracking is stable.
- Test in a Live2D application. VTube Studio supports Live2D models only. It does not support VRoid or VRM files, so a VRoid character must use a 3D application instead.
- Check expressions at stream scale. A subtle mouth change visible while zoomed in may disappear in a small streaming window. Adjust parameter ranges while watching the model at the size your audience will see.
- Back up the source and exported files. Keep the layered artwork, Cubism project, textures, physics settings, and export version together.
Commissioned models: when paying for labor is the affordable decision
A commission is not the budget route in absolute cash terms, but it can be the efficient route when your channel identity matters more than experimenting. You are paying for concept development, illustration, technical preparation, rigging, revisions, and communication. Directional guidance from DenchiSoft describes full models as costing from a few hundred to a few thousand US dollars and taking weeks to months. That is not a current market price list: complexity, artist experience, region, scope, queue length, and rights can change the quote substantially.

Separate the art and rigging scopes
Many projects involve one artist for the character art and a Live2D rigger for animation setup. Ask whether the quoted price includes both. If the artist delivers a flattened illustration, a rigger may need additional time or may be unable to produce the intended motion. Request a layer specification before drawing begins and confirm the export format your tracker expects.
Put the agreement in writing
- Character concept, number of outfits, expressions, toggles, and accessory complexity.
- Layering requirements and whether the editable source files are delivered.
- Number of revision rounds and what counts as a new request.
- Delivery milestones, queue position, and what happens if either party misses a deadline.
- Commercial and monetization rights, attribution, portfolio display, and resale restrictions.
- Whether you may hire another rigger or artist for future edits.
- Final file formats, software versions, backups, and support after delivery.
Paying for a custom model does not automatically transfer every right. Ownership, usage rights, and the ability to resell or sublicense the files should be explicit.
Match the model to the tracking software
Software compatibility should be decided before you choose an avatar. VTube Studio supports Live2D models only. A VRoid or other VRM model therefore needs a 3D application such as VSeeFace. This distinction affects the file you download, the hardware you test, the tutorials you follow, and the troubleshooting path when tracking fails.

| Flat PNG or image | A software workflow designed for static images | Configure image changes manually; do not expect full model tracking |
If a seller’s listing does not clearly state the format or supported applications, ask before downloading or paying. A visually attractive model that cannot load in your software is not a bargain.
Licensing checklist for any affordable model
Use this checklist at the moment you acquire an asset, not months later when your channel begins earning:
- Confirm that commercial or monetized streaming is permitted.
- Copy the exact attribution wording and note where it must be displayed.
- Check whether edits, recolors, commissions for modifications, redistribution, resale, AI training, or crypto use are prohibited.
- Verify whether the package is VRM, Live2D data, editable source artwork, or a simple image.
- Confirm that the package works with your chosen tracker and operating system.
- Save a local copy of the license page, download page, and purchase receipt.
- Record third-party assets used inside a larger model so you can replace one without rebuilding everything.
Keep the license record with your project backups. Marketplace pages can change, move, or become unavailable, while your responsibility for a monetized upload remains.
How to choose your route
Choose premade when speed matters most
Select a premade model if your immediate goal is to test streaming, learn scene setup, or decide whether you enjoy performing as an avatar. Prefer a listing with clear format information, explicit monetization terms, and an attribution requirement you can satisfy consistently.
Choose VRoid when you want editable 3D control
VRoid is the sensible default when you have little cash, want to make changes yourself, and are comfortable learning styling and texture work. It gives you a usable 3D foundation without commissioning art. Budget time for iteration rather than expecting a finished identity from the first preset.
Choose DIY Live2D when the 2D look is non-negotiable
Choose DIY Live2D when illustrated 2D presentation is central to your brand and you are willing to learn both art preparation and rigging. Start with a deliberately simple model to learn the parameter workflow before attempting elaborate hair, clothing, or expressions.

Choose a commission when identity and polish outweigh minimum spend
A commission makes sense when you already understand your content, can describe the character clearly, and want an artist-led result. It is also useful when your own drawing or rigging time would delay launch more than the fee would strain your budget.
A low-risk launch plan
- Define the first milestone. Decide whether success means completing one private tracking test, streaming once, or launching a recurring show. The shorter the milestone, the less you should spend before testing.
- Pick the format. Select VRM for a 3D workflow or Live2D for a 2D workflow. Do not choose a tracker first and hope the model will fit it.
- Use a reversible asset. Start with a free premade model or a basic VRoid character while you learn camera framing, audio, scenes, and moderation.
- Document permissions. Save licenses and attribution text before publishing any monetized content.
- Test privately. Record short clips with your actual lighting and webcam. Look for drifting eyes, mouth tracking that fails at your speaking volume, clipping hair, and unreadable expressions.
- Improve one bottleneck. Adjust lighting, webcam position, model parameters, or scene composition before buying a new model.
- Upgrade deliberately. Move to custom assets or a commission only after you know which visual or technical limitation is affecting your streams.
Common problems and fixes
The model loads but the tracker cannot see it
Check the file format first. A VRM file requires a 3D application; a Live2D package requires Live2D-compatible software. Re-exporting a file will not make an incompatible tracker support it.
Tracking is jittery or loses the face
Stabilize the webcam, face a light source, remove strong backlighting, and keep your face within the tracker’s expected frame. Test at the same distance and angle you will use on stream. Only then decide whether a different camera is necessary.
The model looks acceptable in the editor but poor on stream
Preview at the final output size. Increase the contrast of key facial features, simplify tiny details, and adjust expression ranges so movement remains visible in a small window.
You discover a license conflict after building the model
Stop using the affected asset in monetized content, identify a replacement with compatible terms, and keep the rest of your project intact. An asset log makes this isolation possible. Do not assume that credit alone cures a prohibition on commercial use or redistribution.
A DIY project keeps expanding
Freeze the scope at a minimum viable model: core head movement, eyes, mouth, one outfit, and a small expression set. Add physics, toggles, alternate outfits, and accessories only after the base model tracks reliably.
Upgrade paths after your first streams
A starter model is not wasted work. A VRoid character can remain your testing avatar while you refine a later design, and the lessons from camera placement and expression control transfer to a commissioned model. A premade Live2D asset can teach you how parameter ranges feel before you pay for a custom rig. A simple DIY Live2D model can become a reference that shows an artist exactly which expressions and toggles you use.
