Claude is the clearest choice if your first requirement is an explicitly ad-free, general-purpose assistant. Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free, and its free plan handles everyday questions, writing, web searches, files, code and more. Choose Perplexity instead when sourced web research matters most: its free plan puts citations in every answer, but imposes tighter limits on advanced research features. ChatGPT itself is testing ads for eligible Free and Go users in selected regions, so the right alternative depends on whether you value an ad-free promise, research depth, writing quality, or generous free limits.
What “ad-free” means in this comparison
Advertising policies are not permanent product specifications. OpenAI began testing ads in the United States on February 9, 2026, and is rolling the test out to eligible adult Free and Go users in selected regions. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are not included in that test. In regions where the control is available, a Free user can choose an ads-free experience in exchange for lower usage limits. Availability, eligibility and limits can change as the test expands.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That makes “ad-free” a practical distinction rather than a guarantee that a service will never change. Claude has the strongest direct commitment in the evidence available for this comparison: Anthropic’s February 4, 2026 announcement states, “So we’ve made a choice: Claude will remain ad-free.” Perplexity’s published plan information describes search and subscription limits but does not provide an equivalent quoted, permanent ad-free pledge. If avoiding sponsored messages is non-negotiable, treat Claude’s explicit statement as the deciding fact and recheck each provider’s current policy before signing up.

1. Claude: the best fit for an ad-free everyday assistant
Why it leads for ad avoidance
Anthropic’s February 4, 2026 announcement is unusually unambiguous: “Claude will remain ad-free.” That is stronger evidence than simply seeing no ads during a short session because it states the company’s product direction. It still makes sense to review the policy when you create an account, but readers who want a clear answer to “Which AI chatbot has no ads?” have the most direct answer here.
What the free plan can do
Claude Free is listed at $0 and is available through the web, desktop and mobile apps. Anthropic lists web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors and Artifacts alongside chat. That combination covers the routine jobs most people mean by an everyday assistant:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Ask for explanations, summaries, plans and step-by-step guidance.
- Draft or rewrite emails, reports, cover letters and other text in a specified tone.
- Upload a document and ask for a summary, extraction or transformation.
- Create files and work with code when the task calls for a generated artifact rather than plain text.
- Use web search when the answer depends on current information instead of relying only on the model’s built-in knowledge.
Claude is therefore a sensible default for mixed use: writing in the morning, a document task at lunch and a current-information question later. The free plan’s exact message capacity is not stated in the available plan description, so do not assume a fixed daily quota. If you regularly hit limits, the next step is Claude Pro rather than switching solely because of advertising.
When Claude Pro is worth considering
Claude Pro is listed at $20 per month, or $17 per month when billed annually under the stated discount. It is positioned “For everyday work.” The price buys a paid tier, not a lifetime guarantee of a particular quota: usage ceilings, model access and feature rules can change. Consider it when you need more consistent access for long documents, repeated drafting or heavier daily workloads and the free tier interrupts that routine.
2. Perplexity: the specialist for cited web research
Why its free answers stand out
Perplexity Free is listed at $0 per month and is designed around search. Its plan description promises search-only answers with citations, so each response is built to show where the information came from. That is valuable for checking dates, comparing current policies, finding specifications or creating a reading list. Citations improve traceability, but they do not make every source authoritative: open the cited pages, check publication dates and watch for copied or low-quality material.
What the free limits mean in practice
The free tier is described as practically unlimited for basic searches, with three Pro Searches per day and one Research query per month. It also has limited file uploads, does not include advanced AI models and does not include image generation. Those boundaries are easy to miss if you evaluate Perplexity only by trying a few short questions.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Basic searches: suitable for quick fact-finding and routine questions.
- Pro Searches: capped at three per day, so reserve them for questions that need deeper retrieval or synthesis.
- Research: limited to one query per month on the free plan; use it for a high-value investigation rather than casual browsing.
- Files: uploads are limited, making the free tier less suitable for a continuous document-analysis workflow.
- Models and images: advanced AI models and image generation are excluded from the free plan.
What Perplexity Pro adds
Perplexity Pro is listed at $20 per month. The plan includes expanded Computer access, deep research, top models and model selection. This is the stronger choice when your main job is investigating a topic, gathering sources and comparing evidence rather than polishing prose or maintaining a general conversational workspace. The subscription does not remove the need to verify citations, and its quotas and feature mix may change.
Claude or Perplexity: choose by the job
| Your priority | Better starting point | Reason | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| No ads as the first requirement | Claude Free | Anthropic has an explicit ad-free commitment. | Exact free usage quotas are not stated in the plan summary. |
| Drafting, rewriting and brainstorming | Claude Free | It is positioned as a general-purpose assistant with writing and file tools. | Heavy use may require the paid tier. |
| Every answer should include sources | Perplexity Free | The free plan promises citations in search answers. | It is search-first and limits advanced features. |
| Deep, repeated research | Perplexity Pro | Paid access includes deep research, top models and model selection. | $20 monthly and plan limits can change. |
| Files, code and generated artifacts | Claude Free or Pro | File creation, code execution and Artifacts are listed features. | Check current quotas for large or frequent jobs. |
| Image generation | Neither free plan in this comparison | Perplexity Free explicitly excludes image generation; Claude’s listed plan features do not establish an image-generation allowance. | Use a dedicated image tool if that is your primary need. |
Everyday tasks: how the choices differ
Writing and editing
Claude is the more natural first stop for composing an email, changing a document’s tone, turning notes into an outline or iterating on a draft. Give it the audience, desired length, facts it must preserve and any words to avoid. Ask for a revision rather than accepting the first version, and verify names, figures and quotations before sending.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Perplexity can also draft, but its distinctive advantage is retrieval. Use it when the writing must reflect current public information, such as a brief that cites recent announcements. Ask for a source-backed outline first, then write from the verified material. This separates research from prose and reduces the chance that an attractive draft hides an unsupported claim.
Current questions and recommendations
For a question whose answer may have changed—software requirements, travel rules, product availability or a company policy—Perplexity’s citation-first format is convenient. Read the linked source, not just the summary. Claude’s listed web search feature can also retrieve current information, but you should request sources explicitly when the provenance matters and inspect what it returns.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Documents and files
Claude’s free-plan feature list includes file creation and Artifacts, making it a good fit for turning a conversation into a usable document or structured output. It also lists connectors, which can help bring information from supported services into the workflow; the exact services and permissions depend on the account and current product configuration.
Perplexity Free supports file uploads, but the plan description calls them limited. If you need to analyze many documents or repeat the process, test the free allowance with a representative file before building a workflow around it. For confidential material, remove unnecessary personal data and review the provider’s current retention and training controls.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Code and technical help
Claude’s free feature list includes code execution. That is useful for checking calculations, transforming data and testing small snippets in a controlled environment. Treat generated code as untrusted: inspect dependencies, permissions and input handling before running it on a real system. Neither a model’s confidence nor a successful toy example proves production safety.
Privacy and data controls to check before you switch
Advertising and privacy are related but not identical. An ad-free interface does not automatically tell you how prompts are retained or whether conversations may be used to improve models. Before uploading personal, customer or workplace data, open the provider’s current privacy and data-control pages and check:

Privacy settings and plan protections are changeable, so check them at the time of use rather than relying on an old comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose in five minutes
- Set the non-negotiable. If seeing no ads is the deciding factor, start with Claude because of Anthropic’s explicit commitment.
- Classify your main task. Choose general conversation, writing and files for Claude; choose source-heavy searching and investigations for Perplexity.
- Estimate your free usage. Occasional questions may fit either free plan. Daily research should account for Perplexity’s three Pro Searches per day and one Research query per month. Heavy document or writing work should be tested against Claude’s current free capacity.
- Test with real prompts. Run one writing task, one current-information question and one file task. Judge the answer, the amount of editing required and whether the sources are usable.
- Price the interruption, not just the subscription. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro are both listed at $20 per month, while Claude lists an annual-billing price equivalent to $17 per month. Compare that cost with the time lost to free-tier limits and manual source checking.
Practical prompts for a fair test
Use the same prompts in each service so you compare workflows rather than impressions:
Rewrite this email for a busy manager in 120 words. Preserve every date and amount, and list any ambiguity before drafting.Find the current official guidance on [topic]. Give me a five-point answer, cite each factual claim, and identify the publication date of every source.Turn the attached notes into a one-page brief with headings, a decision table and a list of unanswered questions.Explain this code, identify security risks, and provide a small test case. Do not claim it is production-ready.
For the research prompt, open several citations and check whether they actually support the sentence beside them. For the file prompt, see whether tables, formatting and missing information survive export. For the writing prompt, count factual changes rather than judging style alone.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Assuming “no ads” means no commercial influence
An ad-free interface does not eliminate sponsored results elsewhere on the web or guarantee that every recommendation is neutral. Ask for criteria, alternatives and the date of the information, then make the decision yourself.
Using a citation as proof without opening it
A citation is a trail, not a verdict. Check the original page, its date, the author and whether the quoted context supports the answer. Prefer primary documentation for rules, prices and technical specifications.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Burning scarce research quotas on broad prompts
On Perplexity Free, reserve the single monthly Research query for a narrowly defined question with a clear deliverable. Break a large project into basic searches first, then spend the deeper allowance once you know exactly what remains unknown.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Confusing a model’s tool list with unlimited access
Claude’s listed web search, code execution, connectors and file features do not establish unlimited use. Likewise, Perplexity Pro’s deep research and Computer access remain subject to plan rules. Check the live account screen for quotas before committing a production workflow.
Copying generated text without a verification pass
Both assistants can produce fluent errors. Verify numbers, names, legal language, medical information, citations and code. Keep the original sources and your own notes when the output supports a consequential decision.
Verdict
Choose Claude Free if you want one ad-free, general-purpose assistant for everyday questions, writing, files, web searches and occasional code. Upgrade to Claude Pro when the free tier no longer provides enough capacity; its listed price is $20 monthly or $17 monthly with annual billing.
Choose Perplexity Free if citations are more important than a broad conversational workspace and your usage fits basic searches, three Pro Searches per day and one Research query per month. Choose Perplexity Pro for regular deep research, top-model access and model selection at the listed $20 monthly price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause advertising tests, quotas, model access and privacy controls change, recheck the live plan and policy pages immediately before subscribing. “Best” is task-dependent, but for the two questions readers ask most often, the practical answers are clear: Claude for an explicitly ad-free everyday assistant, Perplexity for citation-led research.
