Bell announced on October 7, 2026, that it had completed a fibre project connecting Big and Little Tancook Islands to its network. The build puts fibre service within reach of approximately 184 homes and businesses, but the announcement does not confirm which individual addresses can order service, or list island-specific plans, speeds or prices. Residents should check availability by address with Bell.
What Bell completed on the Tancook Islands
Big and Little Tancook Islands are off Chester, Nova Scotia. Bell says its project connects them directly to the company’s fibre network through a subsea deployment in the Blandford area. The company describes approximately seven kilometres of submarine cable and an additional eight kilometres of fibre infrastructure on the islands. Its announcement says the network brings high-speed fibre Internet within reach of approximately 184 homes and businesses; it does not say all those locations are already eligible to order service. How the island fibre link was built
The project extends the mainland network beneath the water and distributes fibre across the islands. The two public descriptions give different approximate lengths for the submarine segment, so the figures should not be treated as a single precise measurement.

- Construction update: On August 6, 2026, the Government of Nova Scotia described nearly six kilometres of submarine fibre along the ocean floor and about eight kilometres of aerial fibre on the islands. It expected installation to finish in early fall. Government of Nova Scotia construction update
- Completion announcement: Bell’s October 7 announcement gives approximately seven kilometres of submarine cable and eight kilometres of additional island fibre infrastructure.
The releases do not explain the difference between nearly six and approximately seven kilometres. Both describe approximate project figures, not a reconciled final measurement. The province said construction required specialized marine equipment, environmental approvals and coordinated work. It also described this as the Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative’s only project to use this subsea approach.

When can residents get Bell fibre?
The completion announcement establishes that the infrastructure project is complete, not that every home or business can immediately place an order. Neither Bell’s release nor the province’s update lists eligible Tancook addresses, service launch dates by location, plan speeds, prices, installation charges, contract terms or included equipment.
- Open Bell’s Internet availability page.
- Enter the specific service address and review the result for that location.
- Before ordering, confirm the available download and upload speeds, monthly cost, installation charges, contract terms and equipment directly with Bell.
Bell’s general availability page says service availability depends on the address. The project announcement alone is not proof that a particular property is serviceable.

How the project fits Nova Scotia’s broadband initiative
The Tancook work is part of the Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative, led by Build Nova Scotia. The province established the initiative in 2018 with a $193 million investment for the independent Nova Scotia Internet Funding Trust. In an August 2026 update, the province said the trust had invested close to $186 million and leveraged another $197 million from funders, including $146 million from the private sector. It also reported an additional provincial investment of $8.5 million in the Satellite Internet Service Rebate Program, administered by the trust. The province said the South Shore project area, including the Tancook Islands, received about $37 million combined from the trust, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Bell Canada, Eastlink and other partners. That is a regional funding figure, not a stated budget for the Tancook subsea link alone.

As of August 6, 2026, the province reported that the initiative had extended access to more than 103,000 underserved locations, with fewer than 500 remaining. It said high-speed access had reached almost 100 per cent of underserved Nova Scotian homes and businesses, and that Nova Scotia was believed to be the first Canadian province or territory to reach that level. These are the province’s reported figures and characterization. Government of Nova Scotia update

The province said Tancook residents had relied on fixed wireless and could access its satellite Internet rebate program. Bell described the community as having traditionally relied on a mix of fixed wireless and satellite technologies. Those statements describe previous connectivity options; they do not establish that residents need to purchase satellite equipment, or that Bell fibre includes any particular router or other equipment.

The project sources do not provide enough address-specific service information for a meaningful comparison of fibre plans against existing options. Anyone comparing services should obtain confirmed availability, download and upload speeds, full monthly and installation costs, data limits, contract terms and equipment details for their own address.
