If your family wants a change from Monopoly, start with Ticket to Ride: it offers approachable route-building for a mixed-experience group without making the whole evening about trading or negotiation. Choose CATAN Family Edition if your group prefers trading and resource development, or look at CATAN Junior when you need simplified play for younger children. The right pick depends on your player count, ages, available time, and how much competition your family enjoys.
Which beginner board game is the best first pick?
Ticket to Ride is the strongest general starting point for families new to modern board games. GamesRadar+’s October 1, 2026 family-game guide lists it for 2–5 players, ages 8 and up, at about 60 minutes, and describes its complexity as low. Its guide says the rules can be learned in 15 minutes or less; that is an editorial estimate, not a guarantee for every group. Read the GamesRadar+ guide.

Players collect cards and use them to claim routes on a map, balancing the routes they want against the cards they have. Some routes are limited, so players can compete for the same connections, but the game is largely an individual route-planning puzzle rather than a constant negotiation. GamesRadar+ editor Benjamin Abbott describes it as a relatively sedate puzzle with strategic choices about when to take a risk and when to play safely.
Compare the three options
| Game | Best fit | Players | Age guidance | Time | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ticket to Ride | Mixed-experience families who want route planning | 2–5, according to GamesRadar+ (2026) | 8+, according to GamesRadar+ (2026) | About 60 minutes, according to GamesRadar+ (2026) | Players may compete for popular routes; hobbyists looking for deeper strategy may find it comparatively light. | CATAN Family Edition | Groups drawn to trading and developing resources | 3–4, according to the publisher | 10+, according to the publisher | 60–90 minutes, according to the publisher | It is a stand-alone product and does not work with regular CATAN expansions or extensions. Source |
| CATAN Junior | Families seeking simplified CATAN-like play for younger children | Two-player play is confirmed on the official page; a full range is not stated there | Simplified rules support age six, according to the publisher | Not stated on the official page | Check the product details for your preferred player count and session length. When CATAN Family Edition makes more sense
Choose CATAN Family Edition if your family would rather trade and build up resources than focus on mapping routes. The publisher lists it for 3–4 players, ages 10 and up, with a 60–90-minute play time. Its product page says, “Learn to play in about 15 minutes”; treat that as CATAN GmbH’s product claim, not an independent measure of how quickly every family will learn.

This is a separate stand-alone product, not a route into the regular CATAN expansion system: CATAN says Family Edition is incompatible with standard CATAN expansions and extensions. Check that distinction before buying if you already own regular CATAN and want add-ons to work across editions. See the official Family Edition details.
When to look at CATAN Junior
If younger children are the reason your group needs simpler rules, CATAN Junior is worth considering. CATAN’s official page says the simplified rules support six-year-olds and confirms that two people can play. The inspected page does not establish a complete player range or a playing time, so check the edition’s current box or listing for those details before choosing it for a particular group. See CATAN Junior from the publisher.

How to choose for your family
- Count the players. For two people or a group up to five, Ticket to Ride fits the listed range. CATAN Family Edition is listed for three or four.
- Start with the youngest player’s comfort. Age guidance is a useful starting point, but reading confidence and comfort following rules also affect whether a game feels approachable.
- Match the time available. The listed estimate is about an hour for Ticket to Ride and 60–90 minutes for CATAN Family Edition. A time estimate is not a promise that every first session will finish within it.
- Pick the interaction style. Choose route planning for a more individual puzzle, or trading and resource development if your family enjoys more direct interaction.
- Be honest about competition and luck. Limited routes can create a contest in Ticket to Ride; your family may prefer a calmer puzzle or welcome that race for connections.
These games are alternatives for a family that wants variety, not proof that Monopoly is a bad game. Try the option whose player count, age guidance, time, and style best fit the people around your table.
