For most PC players, the choice between Steam and the EA app comes down to launcher preference—not a proven performance difference. Apex Legends is available on both, and EA says your progress and unlocks carry over when switching from the EA app to Steam if the correct EA Account is linked. Steam requires an EA Account link, and EA warns against launching the game through both clients at once on the same linked account.
What actually differs between Steam and the EA app?
Both are official PC options for the same free-to-play game. The practical differences are which launcher you use and how your accounts are connected; official EA material does not establish that either launcher produces higher FPS or lower latency.

How account linking and progression work
EA says Apex progress is permanently tied to the EA Account. Cross Progression applies to linked platform accounts; it does not mean progress can be moved between EA Accounts. Before using Steam, confirm it is linked to the EA Account that holds your Apex progress.

Check which accounts are connected
- Sign in to your EA Account on EA’s website.
- Open Connected Accounts in account settings and check whether Steam is listed. EA’s account-linking instructions are at EA Account linking.
- If you are switching launchers, verify that the linked EA Account is the one you already use for Apex before launching through Steam.
Unlinking is not a safe way to transfer progress. EA warns that unlinking can remove access to progress and content, including rewards and in-game purchases. Linking the platform account to a different EA Account will not restore the old progress there. See EA’s Cross Progression guidance before changing account links.

Switching is different from running both clients
EA says progression and unlocks carry over when moving from the EA app to Steam. Separately, it warns not to launch Apex through Steam and the EA app simultaneously using the same linked account, because that can cause progression issues. Switching is supported; simultaneous launches are the warned-against case. EA Apex Legends FAQ
Does Apex Legends run better on Steam or the EA app?
There is no established general winner in the official EA material cited here. EA explains how to display FPS and adjust the frame-rate cap in both clients, but those instructions are not a comparative benchmark. The PC requirements provide hardware context, not evidence of a launcher advantage. EA PC system requirements

Actual results can depend on the hardware, monitor, game settings, background programs, and overlays. EA notes that background applications consume resources and can contribute to slow or laggy gameplay, and that multiple overlays can cause problems. These are useful troubleshooting variables, not proof that one launcher is faster. EA guidance on background applications
Compare your own setup fairly
- Use the same PC, monitor, in-game settings, and game mode for each run.
- Keep background applications and overlays consistent; close unnecessary programs if you are troubleshooting.
- Use Apex’s in-game Performance Display to observe FPS and ping. EA also documents Steam’s optional FPS counter, but it is a display tool, not evidence that Steam improves gameplay.
- Repeat the comparison under similar conditions and treat the result as a finding about your own setup, not a universal launcher benchmark.
FPS display and cap settings in each launcher
EA documents the same launch argument for setting a frame-rate cap in either client: +fps_max <required frame rate>. Its instructions also caution that changing the cap can cause performance issues. Make a note of your existing setting before changing it, and consult EA’s FPS display and cap guide for the current steps.

For FPS and ping, Apex’s built-in Performance Display is available regardless of which launcher you use. Displayed results can vary with hardware and monitor; a Steam overlay counter is simply another way to observe FPS. EA FPS guide

- Choose Steam if you prefer managing PC games there and are ready to link the EA Account that has your Apex progress.
- Choose the EA app if you prefer launching directly through EA’s client.
- Do not choose based on a claimed FPS advantage unless you have reliable, controlled evidence for your own system; the cited official sources do not establish one.
Either way, keep the correct EA Account linked and avoid simultaneous launches through both clients. For other technical issues, EA’s Apex support hub is the current troubleshooting index.
