Uploading a file to ChatGPT does not automatically mean it will be used to train models, but its handling depends on your account, settings, chat type, file storage, and—if you use a managed workspace—your organization’s rules. Before sharing sensitive information, check which account you are using, turn off model improvement if appropriate, and know that deleting a chat may not remove a separately saved Library file.
What happens to a file you upload?
A file is shared as part of your ChatGPT interaction, but several separate questions determine what happens next: whether the conversation may be used to improve models, whether it remains in chat history, whether a copy is stored in Library or attached to a project or GPT, and what deletion or workspace retention rules apply. These are distinct controls, so no single setting or deletion action should be treated as a guarantee that every copy disappears.

OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Personal accounts have a model-improvement control, while organization policies and administrator settings may also affect how managed-workspace content is handled. Choose the right chat and account settings

Turn off model improvement on a personal account
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Go to Settings > Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says new conversations after this change will not be used to train its models, but they may still appear in chat history. This control may be unavailable or governed by workspace settings on managed accounts. For current details, consult OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.

Understand Temporary Chat’s limit
Temporary Chat stays out of history and is not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI says a safety copy may be kept for up to 30 days. If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat and is subject to the normal settings. See OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.
Deleting a chat may not delete the uploaded file
Chat history and Library are separate places to check. OpenAI says a deleted saved chat is removed from your account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to exceptions such as legal or security obligations or prior de-identification. If the uploaded file is saved in Library, delete it there separately; deleting the chat alone may leave that file in place. Deleted Library files are also generally scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. Files added as project files or GPT knowledge may follow their own retention conditions. Removing a conversation is not necessarily the same as removing a file attached to a project or custom GPT, so check the relevant project or GPT controls as well as chat history and Library.

Decide whether to upload before you share
- Ask whether the file is necessary. If a short excerpt or a version with identifying details removed is enough, share less.
- Identify the active account. A personal account and an organization-managed workspace can have different settings and policies.
- Check the applicable rules. Do not upload customer, personal, confidential, or regulated work material unless your organization permits it.
- Set model-improvement controls before starting a new conversation. On an eligible personal account, switch off Improve the model for everyone if you do not want new conversations used to improve models.
- Use Temporary Chat with its retention caveat in mind. It is absent from history, but a safety copy may be retained for up to 30 days.
- When removing material, check every location. Delete the conversation and separately inspect Library, projects, or GPT knowledge where the file may also be stored.
