Before an LLM Request Leaves Your App, Inspect What It Contains

Inspect the complete serialized LLM request at the send boundary. Review instructions, messages, retrieved content, tool inputs, and structured fields; minimize data and keep authorization outside the model.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the complete request immediately before your application sends it to an LLM provider. Review every content-bearing field—not just the visible user message—then remove or redact anything the task does not need and block requests that violate your policy. This reduces unnecessary exposure, but it cannot guarantee detection of every prompt injection or replace application-side authorization and provider-retention review.

What is in the request before it leaves your app?

The payload is whatever your application actually serializes for the provider. Depending on the integration, it may include far more than the latest message typed by a user:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • System and developer instructions.
  • User messages and conversation history.
  • Retrieved documents, website text, connector results, or other context added through retrieval-augmented generation.
  • Tool definitions, tool arguments, and structured input fields.
  • Text extracted from files, as well as media or references to media.
  • Metadata or other provider-specific fields that carry user or application data.

Inspect the final serialized request at the point just before the network call. Reviewing an earlier prompt-building step can miss content added later by retrieval, tool orchestration, file processing, or middleware.

How to inspect and minimize an outbound request

  1. Capture the final request in memory at the send boundary. Inspect the same object or serialized representation that the provider client will transmit. Avoid relying only on UI text or an earlier prompt template.
  2. Enumerate every content-bearing field. Include instructions, conversation history, retrieved text, tool inputs, structured values, metadata, and file-derived content. Make the inspection cover fields added by every stage of the request pipeline.
  3. Apply your data policy before sending. Remove information the task does not require. Redact sensitive values where possible, and block the request if it violates your application’s rules. Decide what counts as sensitive for your context, such as personal data, confidential business material, or credentials.
  4. Flag untrusted content without treating a scan as proof of safety. User input, websites, files, and connector results can contain instructions intended to manipulate model behavior. A scanner may identify suspicious content, but there is no universal inspection rule that reliably catches every prompt injection.
  5. Enforce authority in trusted application code. Validate tool calls and sensitive actions against application-side permissions. Do not allow a model instruction, a hidden prompt, or a prompt scan result to grant access.
  6. Review what your own inspection path retains. Logging a full payload for debugging can create another sensitive copy. Choose what to log, who can access it, and how long it is kept; avoid retaining payload contents unless there is a defined need and appropriate safeguards.
  7. Check the exact provider route and settings. Consult current retention documentation for the provider, endpoint, organization configuration, and any cloud platform handling the request. Do not infer that data is never stored from a broad statement about a provider.

Why minimizing prompt content matters

Less unnecessary content means less information is exposed to the provider and less material is available for a malicious or irrelevant instruction to influence the model. OpenAI’s Safety best practices put one prompt-injection mitigation plainly: “Limiting the amount of text a user can input into the prompt helps avoid prompt injection.” Limiting input is a mitigation, not a guarantee.

Do not put credentials or other secrets into model-readable prompts. The OWASP GenAI Security Project’s LLM07:2025 guidance on system prompt leakage warns against storing secrets in prompts and relying on prompt secrecy for access control. Keep credentials and authorization decisions in application-controlled systems instead.

What request inspection can—and cannot—do

Pre-send inspection can help your application find unnecessary sensitive data, flag suspicious content, and enforce policies consistently across request fields. Its coverage depends on whether it sees the whole outbound payload, including content added by retrieval and tools.

It cannot prove that a request is free of prompt injection. OpenAI’s deep research guidance describes risks from tools and external sources and notes that no automated filter catches every case. Treat inspection as one layer alongside constrained inputs, screened links, monitoring, and application-level permission checks—not as a substitute for them.

Provider retention depends on the route and configuration

Provider data handling is not a single yes-or-no setting. OpenAI’s API data controls documentation distinguishes abuse-monitoring logs from application state and describes endpoint-specific retention controls. As documented on October 7, 2026, the page says API data is not used to train or improve models unless a customer opts in, and that abuse-monitoring logs may contain customer content and are retained for up to 30 days by default. The applicable endpoint, account settings, and policy exceptions matter, so verify the current documentation for your configuration.
