No. A working login proves that someone has authenticated; it does not prove they are allowed to view a particular record, use an admin function, or change a sensitive field. Before launch, define what each kind of user may do and enforce those rules on the server for every relevant request.
Authentication identifies a user; authorization limits what they can do
Authentication checks identity evidence. Authorization decides whether that authenticated user may perform a requested action on a particular resource. OWASP puts it plainly: “Authorization is distinct from authentication which is the process of verifying an entity’s identity.”

A regular user and an administrator can both sign in successfully and still have very different permissions. Likewise, a public landing page may be intentionally available without a login. The right question is not simply “Is this page behind a login?” but “Who may perform which action on which resource, and where is that decision enforced?”

Enforce permissions at a trusted server-side point
A frontend can hide a button from users who should not use it, but that is a usability measure, not a security boundary. A visitor may send a request directly to an API or alter a browser request without using the visible interface. OWASP advises: “Permission should be validated correctly on every request, regardless of whether the request was initiated by an AJAX script, server-side, or any other source.”

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Make the authorization decision in a trusted service layer, API gateway, or serverless function that processes the operation. Check it on each request that returns or changes protected data. The interface may reflect the same rules to make the site easier to use, but backend enforcement must stand on its own.
Do not let a client decide its own authority. For example, a request should not be trusted merely because it includes role=admin, an owner ID, or a permission flag. Derive identity and policy attributes from trusted sources, and protect those inputs from user manipulation unless changing them is an explicitly authorized function.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Set permissions at the right level
OWASP ASVS 5.0 frames authorization as ensuring that access is limited to consumers permitted by their entitlements: “Authorization ensures that access is granted only to permitted consumers (users, servers, and other clients).” In practice, permissions may need to distinguish three scopes:
- Function: May this user invoke an administrative action, approve a request, or manage team settings?
- Record: May this user view or update this specific account, document, upload, or tenant’s data?
- Field: May this user see or change particular values within an otherwise accessible record?
A rule that allows someone to open a record does not automatically mean they should be able to edit every field in it. OWASP ASVS 5.0’s authorization material, organized under V8, addresses function-, data-, and field-level restrictions, including risks associated with insecure direct object references (IDOR/BOLA) and broken object property level authorization (BOPLA).

Review permissions before launch
- Inventory protected capabilities and data. List administrative and user functions, API operations, user-owned records, team or tenant data, sensitive fields, uploads, and configuration. Mark which resources are deliberately public, including access for anonymous visitors.
- Write the access rules. For each capability or resource, specify who may take which action and under what conditions. Include both the allowed case and the denied case: for example, a user can view their own record but not another user’s.
- Trace requests to enforcement. Follow every data-returning or data-changing request through the application to the trusted check. Confirm the backend obtains identity and relevant policy attributes from trusted sources rather than accepting client-supplied roles, ownership, or permissions.
- Apply least privilege. Give users, application services, and database accounts only the access needed for their jobs. OWASP’s ASVS 4.0.3 access-control guidance emphasizes trusted service-layer enforcement and least privilege; ASVS 5.0 makes the authorization scopes more explicit.
- Exercise both permitted and denied paths. Test ordinary users against admin-only functions, users against another person’s record, permitted versus restricted fields, and valid versus altered object identifiers or policy attributes. Try the same operation through the interface and through a direct API request.
- Automate repeatable checks, then assess residual risk. Unit and integration tests can check documented authorization rules as the application changes. They do not replace dedicated security testing; for an application with sensitive data or privileged actions, consider an independent web-application security review or penetration test.
Use OWASP standards as verification guides, not proof of safety
OWASP ASVS is a basis for testing web-application technical security controls and a set of secure-development requirements. Its version 5.0 authorization controls are in V8. A checklist can help turn vague expectations into verifiable requirements, but completing a checklist without inspecting and testing the deployed application is not evidence that a particular site is secure.
For AI-enabled systems, OWASP describes AISVS as “an open, community-driven catalogue of testable security requirements for AI-enabled systems.” The AISVS page reports version 1.0 was released in June 2026 at OWASP Global AppSec in Vienna, with 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. It advises selecting a target level based on system risk and says most production systems should aim for at least Level 2; that is OWASP’s guidance, not an independent assessment of any particular website.

These standards help structure verification. They do not establish that an AI-generated application has implemented permissions correctly, and they are not an audit of a specific stack, identity provider, or deployment.
