You can turn off several Windows 11 suggestions, personalization controls, and apps that launch at sign-in—but none is universally useless, and these settings do different jobs. The seven options below explain what each one changes, where Microsoft documents a control, and what convenience you may give up. Turning off a few of them does not stop all Windows data collection.
1. Suggested content in Settings
Windows can show suggested content in the Settings app. If you would rather not see those suggestions, open Settings > Privacy & security > General and turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app. This is a narrow control: it does not remove every recommendation elsewhere in Windows.

For Windows 10, the route and available controls may differ. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the baseline for these instructions. See Microsoft’s general privacy settings guidance and Windows 11 Recommendations & offers documentation.

2. Personalized offers and recommendations
Windows 11 has a separate Recommendations & offers privacy settings page. Microsoft says personalized offers may draw on device use, Windows diagnostic data, account information, and data from other Microsoft products and services to provide tips, ads, and recommendations—including for third-party products and hardware. Review the choices on that page if you want fewer personalized offers.

Do not treat this as a universal ad blocker or a switch that removes every Windows recommendation. Microsoft’s Recommendations & offers guidance describes the controls and the kinds of personalization involved.
3. Optional diagnostic data and Tailored experiences
Diagnostic data and Tailored experiences are distinct controls. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. Review the separate options for diagnostic data and Tailored experiences. Microsoft describes diagnostic data as supporting troubleshooting and product improvements; Tailored experiences can use data to provide recommendations and offers.
Reducing optional diagnostic data does not turn off all data collection. Some controls may be unavailable when an employer or school manages the device. For details on what the settings do, consult Microsoft’s Diagnostics, feedback, and privacy guidance and its explanation of optional diagnostic data for Windows 11 and Windows 10.

4. App-launch tracking for Start and Search
Windows 11’s General privacy settings include a control for letting Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches. Turn it off if you do not want Windows to use launch history to personalize Start and surface frequently used apps in Start and Search. Leave it on if those shortcuts are useful to you.
This is not the same setting as diagnostic data or suggested content. Microsoft documents it under General privacy settings in Windows.
5. Apps that launch automatically at sign-in
Startup apps are worth reviewing individually, not clearing indiscriminately. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to open automatically when you sign in; an app may still work when you launch it yourself.

- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, then switch off an app to prevent it from starting automatically.
- Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps, select an app, and choose Disable.
Task Manager’s low, medium, or high startup-impact label can help you decide what to inspect first, but it does not prove that an app is unnecessary. Microsoft’s startup applications guide explains both routes.
6. Widgets and the glanceable feed
Windows 11 Widgets can put information such as news, weather, calendar or to-do items, and recent photos at a glance. That may be useful if you rely on those updates, or distracting if you do not. Microsoft’s documentation describes what Widgets provide, but the source reviewed here does not establish a current step-by-step switch for disabling the feature across Windows builds.
Do not assume hiding a taskbar icon turns off the underlying feature. Check the instructions for your specific Windows build before changing it. Microsoft’s essential services and connected experiences overview describes Widgets and other Windows experiences.

7. Copilot: distinguish the app, key, and taskbar entry
“Turn off Copilot” can mean different things: remove the consumer Copilot app, change what a dedicated Copilot key does, or remove a taskbar entry point. These are not interchangeable, and there is no single documented removal procedure established here for every consumer Windows 11 PC.
Microsoft Learn’s app-removal instructions cover enterprise users, so they should not be presented as a universal consumer-PC method. The documentation also describes Copilot-key behavior changes associated with the May 2025 optional nonsecurity preview release. Check the instructions for your build and account context, and identify which Copilot element you mean before changing it. See Microsoft’s Windows and Microsoft Copilot management guidance.
Choose the controls that match what you want
- Want fewer promotional prompts? Review Suggested content and Recommendations & offers separately.
- Want less personalization from optional data? Review Diagnostic data, Tailored experiences, and app-launch tracking as separate choices.
- Want a cleaner sign-in? Review startup apps one by one and keep anything you need to run automatically.
- Want fewer at-a-glance features? Consider whether Widgets are useful, but confirm the correct control for your build.
- Want Copilot gone? First identify whether you mean the app, its keyboard key behavior, or its taskbar entry point.
These settings affect different conveniences and personalization choices; they do not establish a measurable speed improvement. Avoid disabling security protections such as SmartScreen just to reduce Windows prompts: Microsoft says it checks information about visited websites and downloaded files to warn about unsafe content. Its purpose and privacy context are covered in Microsoft’s general privacy settings documentation.
