Use Ethernet for stationary devices when a cable is practical and a dependable connection matters; use Wi-Fi for phones, tablets, and devices that need to move around. Many homes benefit from both. Neither connection can deliver more than the internet plan and the slowest part of the path from your provider to your device allow.
How wired and wireless internet differ
Ethernet connects a device to a router or network switch with a cable. Wi-Fi connects devices to the local network by radio, avoiding a cable run and allowing movement within coverage.

Your internet service and home network are separate parts of the connection. A modem converts the provider’s incoming service into Ethernet for a router; some ISP gateways combine modem and router functions. The router then distributes the connection around your home. A weak result can come from the service, network equipment, the device, or the connection between them—not just from choosing Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Google’s overview of modem, router, and network setup explains the roles of these components.

| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | The device is tethered to a cable and port, or to a cable run. | Devices can move around within the network’s coverage. |
| Stability and interference | A direct cable avoids the wireless path and radio interference. | Performance can vary with distance, walls, competing networks, interference, and simultaneous use. |
| Setup | Requires a suitable Ethernet port and cable; a switch or adapter may be needed. | No cable run to each device, but router placement and coverage affect results. |
| Coverage | Reaches where the cable is routed; wiring multiple rooms takes planning. | Can cover multiple rooms; mesh points may extend coverage, depending on placement and the home. |
| Speed ceiling | Limited by the internet plan and the capabilities of the ports, cable, adapter, and device. | Limited by the internet plan and device, as well as wireless conditions and supported Wi-Fi capabilities. |
There is no universal speed winner for every home. Actual performance depends on the ISP plan, equipment, device, cable, wireless distance, barriers, interference, and congestion. Google’s network guidance and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance describe several of these factors. The available sources do not establish a controlled, universally applicable head-to-head result for home Ethernet versus Wi-Fi.

Which connection fits each device?
Work computer or docked laptop
Choose Ethernet if the device supports it and running a cable is practical—particularly if interruptions matter during calls or large transfers. Google Fiber Help recommends a direct connection for work-from-home performance. Its guidance says, “Remember, a wired Ethernet connection always delivers the fastest internet speeds.” That is provider guidance about its networking setup, not a guarantee that Ethernet will outperform every Wi-Fi connection or overcome a service or equipment bottleneck. Google Fiber’s work-from-home networking guidance gives its recommendation.
Gaming console or fixed TV
Ethernet is a sensible option when the console or TV stays in one place and cabling is convenient. It avoids the wireless link, but a cable alone does not establish a particular ping, streaming resolution, or overall experience; the ISP service and the rest of the equipment path still matter.

Phones and tablets
Wi-Fi is usually the practical choice because these devices move from room to room. The experience depends partly on how far they are from the router or mesh point and what lies between them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA larger home or rooms with weak coverage
Start by considering router and mesh-point placement. A compatible mesh system can extend Wi-Fi to additional rooms, but walls, layout, placement, compatibility, and service speed affect what it can achieve. A mesh point needs a usable connection back to the network; putting one in a spot that already has no signal does not guarantee that it will restore coverage or speed. Google’s mesh network guidance covers placement and coverage considerations.

Several devices in use at once
Household activity can affect responsiveness. The FCC says, “When multiple wireless devices are using the same Wi-Fi network, it can impact performance and create lag, or slower responses.” The FCC Consumer Guide does not provide a publication date in the cited material.
Check the whole connection before blaming Wi-Fi
The slowest link can cap the result: ISP service, modem or gateway, router, Ethernet port, cable, adapter, or device. A faster cable or router cannot raise the speed of an internet plan, and a new router cannot give an older device wireless capabilities it does not support.

For a product-specific example, Google Home & Nest Help says the Ethernet ports on Nest Wifi and Google Wifi support 10/100/1000 Mbps, and recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 when internet speeds are above 100 Mbps. Those figures and the cable recommendation apply to the products covered by that support article; they are not specifications for every router or setup. Google’s Ethernet speed troubleshooting page provides the details.
Diagnose a slow or inconsistent connection
- Compare near the router. Run a speed test over Wi-Fi close to the router and, if possible, another over Ethernet. Compare the results with your service plan; a test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee of constant speed.
- If both are slow, check the wired path. Look at the ISP service, modem or router, device port or adapter, cable rating, and port speeds. A limitation in any one component can reduce performance.
- If Ethernet is satisfactory but distant Wi-Fi is poor, move the router to an open, central location and reduce barriers where practical. Distance and physical obstacles can weaken the wireless connection.
- If the layout needs more coverage, consider a compatible mesh system and place its points where they can maintain a good connection to the router. Placement and home construction affect results.
- Check the client device’s capabilities. Older phones, computers, and other devices may not support the Wi-Fi standards or speeds you expect; replacing the router does not change what those devices can support.
A practical setup for most homes
Connect fixed devices such as a work computer, game console, or TV by Ethernet where a suitable port and cable run are available. Keep Wi-Fi for mobile devices and locations where wiring is impractical. If you need more wired ports, a compatible Ethernet switch can add them; if a computer lacks an Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may provide one, with performance still dependent on the adapter and device. Use mesh for a coverage problem, not as a way to increase the internet speed supplied by your ISP.
