Yes—you can become a web developer without a degree. Learn the fundamentals, build projects that show what you can do, and target roles whose requirements fit your skills. Employers vary: a portfolio can provide evidence of ability, but it cannot guarantee an interview or a job.
Do web developers need a degree?
Not universally. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says education requirements for web developers and digital designers range from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree. It also says applicants may not need specific education credentials if they can demonstrate their abilities through prior work experience or projects. These are broad occupational guidelines, not a promise that a particular employer will waive a degree requirement. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook

Requirements depend on the employer, the kind of role, and the location. A front-end, back-end, or full-stack job can emphasize different skills, and postings with the same title may ask for different qualifications. Read listings where you plan to apply and treat repeated requirements as a guide to what you should learn next.

Start with the browser-facing fundamentals before relying on a framework. Mozilla’s MDN curriculum presents core front-end knowledge as a foundation for employability and long-term learning. Its curriculum can guide independent study as well as structured learning. MDN curriculum overview
#1 Best Overall
- Understand the web and browser. Learn how a browser loads and displays a page, and how files such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript contribute to it.
- Write semantic HTML. Structure page content with elements that communicate what it is, rather than using markup only for appearance.
- Style with CSS. Practice layout, typography, and visual hierarchy, and make pages adapt to different screen sizes.
- Learn JavaScript fundamentals. Use it to respond to user actions and make pages interactive. Build understanding before adopting a framework.
- Practice accessibility and responsive design. Make interfaces usable with different input methods and screen sizes; consider these alongside implementation, not as a final polish step.
- Use everyday development tools. Learn version control with Git, basic command-line operations, and a code editor so you can manage and explain your work.
- Choose a framework when the fundamentals make sense. Pick one that appears in the roles you want, and learn it as an additional tool rather than a substitute for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Communication matters too: developers need to explain decisions, ask useful questions, and describe problems clearly. The precise mix of technical and collaboration skills depends on the team and role.
Build projects that make your skills reviewable
Projects give an employer something concrete to inspect when your formal education does not show the relevant skills. Choose work that solves a real problem or states its purpose clearly. Build, publish where practical, and document the choices you made.

- HTML CSS Design and Build Web Sites
- Comes with secure packaging
- It can be a gift option
- Make the project usable on more than one screen size and consider accessibility as part of the implementation.
- Explain what the project does, what you built, and any important tradeoffs.
- Be ready to talk through how you debugged a problem and what you would change next.
- Use job-posting requirements to identify which skills your examples should demonstrate.
There is no universal number of projects that guarantees a callback. The useful test is whether your work lets someone assess skills relevant to the role—not whether you have reached a particular project count.

Choose a learning route that fits your needs
Self-study, courses, boot camps, apprenticeships, and degrees can all be routes into development, but they differ in structure, cost, feedback, and access to work experience. MDN lists self-study, courses, and boot camps as ways to learn front-end topics; its curriculum can provide a self-study guide. MDN curriculum overview

| Route | Potential advantage | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Self-study | Flexible pacing and the option to use free documentation. | You must provide your own structure, practice, and feedback. |
| Course or boot camp | A more structured way to cover topics. | Check the syllabus, instructor or mentor support, total cost, time commitment, and refund terms. A certificate alone does not establish job readiness. |
| Apprenticeship (UK example) | A route that combines training with a work-based setting. | The UK National Careers Service lists a Software Development Technician Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship; availability and eligibility depend on jurisdiction and program status. UK National Careers Service web developer profile |
| Degree | Some employers prefer a bachelor’s degree, according to the BLS. | It is one possible route, not a universal prerequisite for web developer roles. |
Compare routes by total cost, time and schedule, depth in HTML/CSS/JavaScript, feedback on original projects, access to real work experience, and fit with local job postings. Do not judge a program by its certificate or advertised outcomes alone without checking how those outcomes are defined and supported.
Apply strategically without a degree
- Choose a target role and location. Look at current postings for the kind of development work you want, rather than assuming one curriculum fits every vacancy.
- Note recurring requirements. Separate core skills that appear repeatedly from tools or credentials mentioned by only some employers.
- Build and publish evidence. Develop projects that demonstrate relevant skills, and make their purpose and your decisions easy to understand.
- Address requirements honestly. Do not claim professional experience you do not have. Show what you built and describe your contribution accurately.
- Keep adjusting your learning. As you review more postings and get feedback, practice the skills that are most relevant to your intended roles.
This is a practical way to align your learning with employers’ stated needs, not a tested hiring formula. Requirements and screening practices vary.

How to interpret salary and job outlook figures
For the United States, the BLS reports a median annual wage of $92,650 for web developers in May 2025 and projects 4% employment growth for the occupation from 2025 to 2035. These are occupation-wide figures, not salary or growth estimates specifically for entry-level, self-taught, or degree-free candidates. The BLS separately reports about 13,600 average annual openings over that decade for the combined group of web developers and digital designers; that is not a count of entry-level web developer jobs.
