V-Bucks is Fortnite’s in-game currency, but Epic Games’ official pages do not explain what the “V” stands for. So the supported answer is that “V-Bucks” is the currency’s name; a longer expansion is not established by the official sources reviewed.
What are V-Bucks used for?
Epic describes V-Bucks as Fortnite’s in-game currency. Players can use them to buy Outfits, Pickaxes, Emotes, Wraps, and Fortnite Passes. The name identifies the currency; it does not, in Epic’s published definition, provide an expansion for the initial V.

Epic’s V-Bucks page gives the official definition and lists eligible purchases.
Can you transfer or get a refund for V-Bucks?
Epic says V-Bucks cannot be transferred between accounts and that it does not offer refunds on unused V-Bucks. If you are buying a card as a gift, make sure the recipient can redeem and use it with the intended account and platform.

What is the difference between a V-Bucks card and a Fortnite gift card?
Epic is replacing V-Bucks cards with Fortnite gift cards over time. A V-Bucks card adds its stated V-Bucks amount; a Fortnite gift card adds balance to an Epic account, which can be used for V-Bucks and other eligible Epic purchases. Availability depends on region, and older V-Bucks cards may remain in stores during the transition.

Can V-Bucks be used across platforms?
Epic’s shared-wallet guidance covers PlayStation, Xbox, PC, mobile, and cloud gaming services. One important exception applies to V-Bucks received on Nintendo devices by redeeming a card: those V-Bucks can only be used on Nintendo devices. Since platform and account terms can change, check Epic’s current V-Bucks FAQ before buying for a specific device.

Yes. In a notice dated March 10, 2026, Epic said changes would start March 19, 2026. The company said, “The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we’re raising prices to help pay the bills.” The pack examples below are Epic’s published values, not a guarantee of what a pack costs in every region or at a later date.

What to check before redeeming a card
- An Epic account is required to redeem a V-Bucks card.
- Epic says a card’s face value is associated with one account on the selected device; it cannot be transferred or withdrawn. Its FAQ says cards do not expire and have no use fee.
- Confirm that the card’s region and the account and platform you plan to use are compatible.
- Read the current V-Bucks card terms. Epic’s terms can change, so older device or sale conditions should not be treated as permanent.
