Use pwd to confirm that location, ls to inspect it, and cd to move before creating, copying, renaming, or removing anything. This guide builds a safe practice routine around those commands and explains the path rules that prevent common beginner mistakes.

How the Linux command line sees your files
The Linux command line is a text interface to your computer. You type a command, press Enter, and the shell runs it in the current working directory. A command that uses a relative path therefore depends on where you are standing; the same command can affect different files after a directory change.

Most commands follow a simple pattern: the command name, optional options, and one or more paths. For example, ls -la notes asks ls to list the notes directory with two options enabled. Spaces separate arguments, so a filename containing spaces must be quoted or escaped.
Confirm your location and inspect a directory
Print the current directory with pwd
Run:
pwd
pwd prints the working directory, normally as an absolute path beginning with /. Make this your first check whenever a command could change or delete data. If the output is not the directory you expected, stop and use cd before doing anything else.

List files with ls
ls shows the contents of a directory:
ls
Ordinary listings are non-recursive: they show the requested directory’s immediate contents, not every file in every descendant directory. Names beginning with a dot are hidden by default. To include them and use a detailed, human-readable listing, run:
ls -la
The -a option includes entries such as .config, . (the current directory), and .. (the parent). The long format supplied by -l also displays permissions, ownership, size, and modification time. Use ls -la when checking whether a supposedly empty directory contains hidden files.

Move through Linux paths with cd
Absolute and relative paths
An absolute path starts at the filesystem root, /, and identifies a location independently of your current directory. An example is /home/user/Documents; replace user with the actual account name on your system.
A relative path starts where you currently are. If pwd reports /home/user, then Documents and Documents/report.txt refer to items below that location. Relative paths are convenient inside a project; absolute paths are explicit and useful in scripts or when you are unsure of your location.
Special path components have fixed meanings:
.means the current directory...means the current directory’s parent.~conventionally expands to your home directory in an interactive shell./is the filesystem root, not the same thing as your home directory.
Change directories
Use cd followed by an absolute or relative path:
cd Documents
cd /tmp
cd ..
cd /
cd ~/Desktop
cd .. moves up one level. cd / takes you to the root of the filesystem. Ubuntu’s beginner examples use cd ~/Desktop to reach a Desktop folder under the home directory. Running pwd after a change verifies the result.
For names containing spaces, quote the complete path:

cd "Project Files"
Tab completion is safer than retyping long names: type enough characters to identify the item and press Tab. If more than one name matches, type another character or press Tab again to see the choices.
Create a safe practice area
Practice under a directory that belongs to you rather than in a system directory. The following commands create a workspace in your home directory and enter it:
cd ~
mkdir -p linux-practice
cd linux-practice
pwd
mkdir name creates one directory. The -p option also creates missing parent directories, so mkdir -p practice/notes succeeds even when practice does not yet exist. It also avoids an error when the requested parent chain is already present.
Create files and directories
Use mkdir for directories
Inside the practice area, create a nested directory with:
mkdir -p practice/notes
Check what exists before entering it:
ls
cd practice/notes
pwd
Use touch for an empty file
Run:
touch lesson.txt
If lesson.txt does not exist, touch creates an empty file. If it already exists, the command updates its timestamps rather than erasing its contents. Confirm the file with:
ls -la
touch does not open an editor and does not add text. Use a text editor when you need to write content.

Copy, move, rename, and remove
Copy with cp
cp leaves the original in place and creates a second item:
cp lesson.txt lesson-copy.txt
With two file names, the first argument is the source and the second is the destination. To copy into an existing directory, provide that directory as the destination:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →cp lesson.txt ../
Inspect both locations with ls -la when you need to confirm that the copy landed where intended.
Move or rename with mv
GNU Coreutils describes mv as “Move (rename) files.” A rename is simply a move from one name to another in the same directory:
mv lesson-copy.txt renamed.txt
Moving to another directory changes the item’s location:
mv renamed.txt ../
Unlike cp, mv does not leave the original at its old path. Treat the destination as significant: if it names an existing directory, the source is placed inside that directory rather than replacing the directory itself.

Remove a file with rm
Use:
rm renamed.txt
rm removes the named file in ordinary terminal use; it does not provide a recycle-bin step. GNU Coreutils defines it as “Remove files or directories.” Because recovery is not part of this beginner workflow, inspect the path before pressing Enter.
Remove a directory tree with rm -r
Directories normally need to be empty before ordinary removal. The recursive option removes a directory and its contents:
rm -r notes
Use this only for a path you created specifically for practice. Do not apply it to /, /home, or an unfamiliar path. A recursive command can remove many nested files in one operation.
A complete beginner exercise
The following sequence is designed to run inside the linux-practice directory created earlier. It demonstrates each operation without touching unrelated files:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
pwd— confirm that you are in the practice workspace.ls— inspect its current contents.mkdir -p practice/notes— create the nested practice directory.cd practice/notes— enter it.touch lesson.txt— create an empty file.ls -la— verify the file and see hidden entries.cp lesson.txt lesson-copy.txt— make a second file while keeping the original.mv lesson-copy.txt renamed.txt— rename the copy.ls -la— verify that bothlesson.txtandrenamed.txtare present.cd ..— return to the parent directory.- Run
pwdandls; confirm the target is exactly the practice directory you intend to remove. rm -r notes— remove the confirmed practice tree.ls— check that the directory has disappeared.
If you followed the commands literally, the path in step 12 is the notes directory beneath the practice location, not a system directory. If your pwd output differs, do not continue until you have corrected it.
Relative paths versus absolute paths
| Path style | Example | Strength | Risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absolute | /home/user/Documents/report.txt |
States the complete location and does not depend on the current directory. | It is less portable when the account name, mount point, or machine changes. |
| Relative | notes/today.txt |
Short and convenient within a project or practice folder. | It refers to a different item if your current directory changes. |
Use pwd to make a relative command understandable before you run it. In scripts or instructions shared with someone working elsewhere, an absolute path can remove ambiguity, but only when that path is valid on the target system.
Best Value
Shell commands versus a graphical file manager
| Consideration | Graphical file manager | Shell |
|---|---|---|
| Discoverability | Visible folders, buttons, and menus help a newcomer explore. | Requires knowing command names and path syntax. |
| Repeatability | Repeated actions usually require repeated pointing and clicking. | A command can be copied, edited, and run again. |
| Hidden files | Visibility depends on a view setting. | ls -a explicitly includes dot-prefixed entries. |
| Path precision | Dragging and selecting can obscure the exact destination. | The typed source and destination are explicit. |
| Recovery risk | Some environments offer a trash or confirmation dialog. | rm is normally immediate, so verification is essential. |
Neither interface replaces the other. A graphical manager is useful for discovering unfamiliar folders; the shell is efficient when you know the exact paths and want repeatable operations.
Safety checks that prevent destructive mistakes
- Run
pwdimmediately before a destructive command such asrmorrm -r. - Run
lsorls -laand compare the exact spelling of the target with what you intend to change. - Prefer a destination written explicitly rather than relying on a remembered current directory.
- Quote paths containing spaces, and use Tab completion to avoid mistyped names.
- Practice in
~/linux-practiceor another directory you created, never in an unknown system location. - Remember that a normal
lshides dotfiles; usels -abefore deciding that a directory is empty.
Common beginner problems
“No such file or directory”
The path is misspelled, the parent does not exist, or you are in the wrong directory. Run pwd, inspect with ls, and use cd one level at a time. For a new hierarchy, create missing parents with mkdir -p.
“Permission denied”
The account does not have the required permission for that path. First confirm the location with pwd and inspect permissions with ls -l. Move your practice work into a directory you own instead of experimenting in system directories.
The file seems to be missing
It may be hidden because its name begins with a dot, or it may be in another directory. Run ls -la, then verify the location with pwd. Check spelling and capitalization; Linux filenames are case-sensitive.
A command changed the wrong item
Stop immediately and do not run more cleanup commands. Record the exact command, current path, and listing shown by pwd and ls -la. For future operations, separate inspection from action: check the path first, then run one change, then verify the result.
