Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Deploying Meteor on a VPS means turning the project into a plain Node.js bundle, installing its server-side dependencies on the target machine, running Node on a private port, and placing Nginx in front of it for the public HTTP(S) endpoint. The reliable sequence is: match the VPS architecture and Node.js version, build and test an identical release in staging, configure ROOT_URL, PORT, and MONGO_URL, then proxy traffic through Nginx with WebSocket support.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
What this deployment architecture looks like
A production Meteor installation on a VPS normally has four layers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Browser: connects to your public domain over HTTPS.
- Nginx: listens on ports 80 and 443, terminates TLS, and reverse-proxies requests.
- Node.js/Meteor: runs the generated
main.jsbundle on an internal loopback port such as3000. - MongoDB: stores application data and is reached through the
MONGO_URLconnection string.
Keeping Node private prevents clients from bypassing Nginx and gives you one place to manage certificates, redirects, request limits, and access logs. Nginx must preserve HTTP/1.1 and the WebSocket upgrade headers because Meteor uses a WebSocket-based live connection in addition to ordinary HTTP requests.
Choose the operating model before you build
| Option | Operational burden | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPS, Nginx and a custom Meteor bundle | Highest | Teams that need control over the operating system, proxy and process layout | You own patching, monitoring, failover, TLS, process supervision and database operations |
| Meteor Up (Mup) | Medium | Teams wanting repeatable deployment automation | Confirm that the current release is maintained and adapt its configuration to your Meteor and Node versions |
| Docker | Medium | Teams standardizing container-based delivery | You still own orchestration, secrets, persistent storage and monitoring |
| Galaxy Cloud | Lowest infrastructure burden | Teams that prefer managed Meteor operations | There is an external service cost and a platform-specific deployment model |
The custom VPS route is appropriate when you deliberately want to operate the server. Galaxy Cloud is the managed alternative when maintaining a VPS, Nginx, a process supervisor and database connectivity is not desirable. Meteor’s official guidance describes Galaxy as the easiest way to run a production Meteor application with confidence, while custom deployment remains available for teams building their own hosting arrangement.

Prepare the VPS
Use a supported 64-bit Linux system
Create a 64-bit Linux VPS with enough CPU, memory and disk for your application, its build artifact, logs and operating-system updates. No universal VPS size, price, performance target or uptime figure is provided; size the machine from your application’s measured workload rather than from a generic recommendation.
Apply security updates, create a non-root deployment account, and restrict administrative SSH access. Allow only the public ports you need—normally 80 and 443—and keep the application port available only on loopback or the private network.

Meteor releases expect particular Node.js versions. Check the version used by the project with:
meteor node -v
After building, inspect the generated .node_version.txt file as an additional record of the expected runtime. Install that compatible Node.js version on the VPS before starting the bundle. Meteor’s documentation gives this warning: “If you use a mis-matched version of Node when deploying your application, you will encounter errors!”
A mismatch can appear as an immediate startup failure, a native-module loading error or a less obvious runtime problem. Treat the project’s reported version—not the distribution’s default Node package—as the requirement.
Install Nginx and plan DNS
Install Nginx using the package manager for your Linux distribution. Create the DNS record for the application hostname and point it to the VPS address. Allow time for DNS propagation before testing certificates or production traffic. Decide whether the database will be on the same private network, on another server, or with a managed MongoDB provider; that choice affects firewall rules and latency.
Build a deployable Meteor bundle
meteor build turns the project into a deployable plain Node.js application. The resulting bundle does not require the Meteor command-line tool on the server, but it must be produced for the architecture that will execute it.
Install project dependencies and build
From the project source directory, install the dependencies needed for the production build and create an output directory:

npm install --production
meteor build /path/to/build --architecture os.linux.x86_64
Replace the architecture value when the VPS uses a different supported target. A typical 64-bit Intel or AMD Linux VPS uses os.linux.x86_64. The build output is a compressed bundle containing the application and a programs/server directory.
Do not copy a bundle built for a different CPU or operating system and assume it will work. Native dependencies are compiled for a platform, so the build target and the machine that runs it must be compatible.
Recommended Free Tools
Record the release identity
Store the generated archive with a version identifier (for example, a Git commit or release number) and retain the source revision used to produce it. A reproducible release record makes it possible to deploy exactly the tested artifact, roll back to the prior one, and compare a failed release with a known-good release.
Install server dependencies on the VPS
Copy the compressed bundle to the VPS, extract it into a release directory, and install the server-side packages from that machine:
cd my_build_bundle_directory
(cd programs/server && npm install)
This command is required because Meteor’s server bundle can contain native C/C++ addons. Running npm install inside programs/server rebuilds those addons for the VPS operating system and CPU architecture. Copying node_modules from a development laptop or a different server can produce an invalid ELF header error or another binary incompatibility.
After installation, make the release directory readable by the deployment account, keep secrets out of the bundle, and configure a separate writable location for logs or uploaded files if the application needs persistent local storage.
Configure MongoDB before starting Meteor
Choose a database deployment
MongoDB may run on a separately managed service, on another private server, or on the same VPS for a small non-critical installation. A hosted MongoDB deployment is often simpler operationally because backups, monitoring and replica management are available as managed features, but it still requires correct network and credential configuration.
Evaluate these requirements before production:
- MongoDB version support for the Meteor release and your application’s drivers.
- Replica-set and oplog support where your application relies on Meteor’s livequery behavior.
- Monitoring, alerting and capacity visibility.
- Continuous or otherwise frequent backups, plus a tested restore procedure.
- Database users with least-privilege access rather than an unrestricted administrator account.
- IP allow-listing or private networking so the database is not open to the entire internet.
- Encryption in transit and encryption at rest where required by your risk model or regulation.
- Region placement close to the application server to reduce round-trip latency.
Construct the connection string
The MONGO_URL value is the complete MongoDB connection URI, including the host, port or replica-set service, database name and credentials as required by your deployment. Keep it in the process environment or a protected secrets mechanism, not in source control or a public Nginx file.

Verify connectivity from the VPS using the database provider’s supported client or health check. A successful TCP connection alone does not prove that the configured user can authenticate, select the application database or perform the operations Meteor needs.
Set Meteor’s runtime variables
Meteor needs three deployment values in the process environment:
| Variable | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
ROOT_URL |
The public base URL users and Meteor should treat as canonical | https://your-app.example |
PORT |
The private port on which Node listens | 3000 |
MONGO_URL |
The MongoDB connection URI | mongodb://db-host:27017/myapp |
ROOT_URL must be the public HTTPS address, not http://127.0.0.1:3000. PORT should be an internal listener; Nginx owns the public endpoint. The database URI must be reachable from the VPS and use credentials and options appropriate to the selected MongoDB deployment.
For a direct smoke test, start the generated application with:
MONGO_URL=mongodb://db-host:27017/myapp
ROOT_URL=https://your-app.example
PORT=3000
node main.js
Once the process starts, test it locally on the VPS before adding Nginx:
curl -I http://127.0.0.1:3000
A local response confirms that Node is listening; it does not yet verify DNS, TLS, browser behavior or WebSockets.

Keep the Node process running
A terminal session is not a production process supervisor. Use the service manager appropriate to your Linux distribution, such as a systemd unit, or use a maintained deployment tool that provides restart and logging behavior.
Your supervisor should:
- Run the process as a dedicated unprivileged user.
- Set
ROOT_URL,PORTandMONGO_URLfrom protected environment configuration. - Set the working directory to the extracted release containing
main.js. - Restart the process after an unexpected exit, with a limit that avoids a tight crash loop.
- Send standard output and error to a log destination that is rotated and monitored.
- Start after networking is available and stop cleanly during upgrades.
Keep each release in its own directory and switch a stable symlink or service path during promotion. This layout allows a quick rollback without rebuilding the application.

Configure Nginx as the reverse proxy
Proxy HTTP and WebSocket traffic
Create an Nginx server block for the application hostname. The following pattern sends public traffic to the private Meteor listener and preserves the connection headers required for WebSocket upgrades:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
server {
listen 80;
server_name your-app.example;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:3000;
proxy_http_version 1.1;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";
}
}
Use the exact configuration layout required by your Linux distribution’s Nginx package. The important behaviors are the upstream address, HTTP/1.1, the original host and forwarding headers, and the WebSocket upgrade headers. If you add a separate HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect server, place the proxy block in the HTTPS server that handles the application.
Validate before reloading
Check syntax before applying a change:
nginx -t
Only reload after the test reports a valid configuration. Then check an ordinary page request through the public hostname and watch the Nginx and application logs. A page that loads while live updates fail usually indicates an upgrade-header, TLS or timeout problem rather than a MongoDB problem.
Add HTTPS and certificate renewal
Use the certificate automation supported by your distribution or hosting environment. The exact commands and generated server blocks vary by Linux release and certificate tooling, so verify the resulting configuration with nginx -t. Confirm that the certificate covers the hostname in ROOT_URL, that HTTP redirects to HTTPS if that is your policy, and that renewal can reload Nginx without interrupting the application.
Do not expose the Node port publicly once Nginx is working. Restrict it to 127.0.0.1 or a private interface in the service and firewall configuration.
Test the complete request path
- Resolve the application hostname to the VPS address and confirm that the record is the one you intend to use.
- Open the HTTPS URL and verify the certificate hostname, initial HTML and static assets.
- Sign in or perform a representative write operation to confirm MongoDB authentication and permissions.
- Use a browser’s network tools to confirm the Meteor WebSocket connection upgrades successfully and remains open.
- Restart the supervised Node process and verify that Nginx returns to a healthy upstream without manual intervention.
- Inspect application, Nginx and database logs for authentication failures, repeated restarts, 502 responses or rejected upgrades.
Test from outside the VPS as well as with curl on the server. A loopback test bypasses DNS, firewall rules, certificate validation and the proxy, so it cannot validate the public deployment by itself.
Release safely through staging
Build one candidate artifact, deploy it to a staging server, run QA, and promote that same version to production. Rebuilding from a changed working tree after staging undermines the test result because the production bytes may no longer be the bytes that passed QA.
- Commit and identify the source revision.
- Run
npm install --productionandmeteor buildfor the target architecture. - Extract the artifact in staging and run
(cd programs/server && npm install)on that server. - Exercise login, data writes, file handling, scheduled work and WebSocket updates with staging credentials and data.
- Record the artifact identifier and any database migration or configuration changes.
- Promote the unchanged artifact to production, update the supervised service, and run the public smoke tests.
The --production flag used during dependency installation or a build does not itself constitute a production deployment. Production safety comes from the release process, runtime configuration, supervision, proxying, backups and verification.

Security and operations checklist
- Apply operating-system and Nginx security updates on a defined schedule.
- Use SSH keys, disable unnecessary administrative access and keep the deployment account unprivileged.
- Store MongoDB credentials and other secrets outside the repository and restrict their file permissions.
- Allow database traffic only from the application network or approved VPS address.
- Enable TLS for public traffic and for the database connection when the MongoDB deployment supports it.
- Monitor process restarts, memory and disk usage, Nginx 4xx/5xx responses, WebSocket failures and database health.
- Configure log rotation so application and proxy logs cannot fill the disk.
- Maintain continuous or frequent backups and periodically perform a restore test.
- Document the current release, Node version, environment variables, Nginx configuration and rollback path.
Troubleshoot common failures
The process exits immediately
Read the supervisor’s stderr and start the bundle manually with the same environment values. Check that the Node.js version matches meteor node -v and .node_version.txt, that MONGO_URL is present, and that the process user can read the release directory.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →invalid ELF header or a native module error
The server-side node_modules was likely copied from another operating system or architecture. Delete that dependency directory in the bundle and run (cd programs/server && npm install) on the VPS itself.
Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway
Confirm that Node is running, that it listens on the same port configured in proxy_pass, and that the service binds to the interface Nginx uses. Check the Nginx error log and test curl http://127.0.0.1:3000 on the VPS. A stopped process, wrong port, failed startup or local firewall rule is more likely than a DNS issue when the proxy reports 502.
The page loads but live updates or sign-in state fail
Inspect the browser’s WebSocket request and Nginx configuration. Ensure proxy_http_version 1.1, Upgrade and Connection "upgrade" are present in the application location. Also verify that ROOT_URL exactly matches the public scheme and hostname, including HTTPS.
MongoDB connection or authorization errors
Check the URI spelling, credentials, database name, TLS options, replica-set requirements and network allow-list. Test from the VPS rather than from your laptop, because the database may allow one source address but not the other. Confirm that the MongoDB user has the application permissions it needs and that the selected service supports the MongoDB version and oplog behavior expected by your Meteor release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCertificates or redirects behave incorrectly
Verify that DNS points to this VPS, that ports 80 and 443 reach Nginx, and that the certificate includes the hostname in ROOT_URL. Run nginx -t after certificate-tool changes and inspect which server block answers the request. A stale DNS record or a default Nginx server block can send a valid request to the wrong site.
When a VPS is the wrong choice
A custom VPS is not automatically cheaper or safer than a managed service. It transfers responsibility for operating-system patches, Nginx and TLS, process supervision, monitoring, failover, backups and database access control to your team. Choose it when that control is valuable and you can staff the operational work.
Choose Galaxy Cloud when the priority is managed Meteor operations rather than control of the underlying host. Consider Meteor Up when repeatable deployment commands are more important than managing every server step manually, but verify its current maintenance status and compatibility with your Meteor release. Docker can standardize packaging, yet it does not remove the need to operate secrets, persistent data, networking, monitoring or an orchestrator.
Deployment decision checklist
- Can you install the Node.js version required by the Meteor release?
- Does the build architecture match the VPS CPU architecture?
- Will you run
(cd programs/server && npm install)on the target machine? - Is Node private behind Nginx, with WebSocket upgrade support enabled?
- Does
ROOT_URLequal the public HTTPS URL and doesPORTidentify only the internal listener? - Is
MONGO_URLbacked by a supported, monitored and recoverable MongoDB deployment? - Have you tested the unchanged release in staging before production?
- Can you roll back the process to the preceding release and restore the database if necessary?
If every item has a concrete answer, the deployment has the essential pieces: a compatible Meteor bundle, correctly rebuilt native dependencies, a supervised Node process, an Nginx reverse proxy, and a database connection operated to a production standard.
