What Happens to AT&T Mexico Customers as Ownership Changes? Timeline, Service and What’s Unknown

AT&T Mexico customers should not lose service or change plans merely because the sale was announced. AT&T said on October 13, 2026, that it agreed to sell the Mexican business to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion in cash at closing, plus additional contractual and contingent benefits. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary conditions including Mexican regulatory approvals.

Until closing, AT&T remains the seller. Its customer FAQ says: “There are no impacts to your service related to this announcement – including for customers traveling to Mexico from the U.S.” That assurance covers the period around the announcement; it does not establish what prices, branding, billing, roaming, contracts, device financing or network arrangements will look like after completion.

What the ownership announcement means right now

The deal is announced, not completed. AT&T continues to operate and support AT&T Mexico while the parties seek the approvals and satisfy the other conditions needed to close. A press release or customer notice about an agreement does not itself transfer your line, phone number, account, contract or SIM to another provider.

For now, keep using your AT&T Mexico service in the normal way and contact AT&T through its established support channels. Do not treat the announcement alone as evidence that you need a new SIM, a new telephone number, a different handset, a new price plan or an account migration.

What AT&T has expressly promised

AT&T’s transaction FAQ states that there are no service impacts related to the announcement, including for U.S. customers traveling to Mexico. AT&T also says enterprise customers should experience no service impact and that it will continue delivering the expected experience. These are present-tense assurances while the transaction is pending, not a published post-closing service schedule.

What the $2 billion figure means

AT&T describes $2 billion as cash payable at closing. The announced consideration also includes additional contractual and contingent benefits. The figure is therefore a transaction value description, not a fee charged to customers and not evidence of a future monthly tariff.

When will the sale become final?

AT&T expects the transaction to close in the first quarter of 2027. “Expected” is important: the date can move if regulatory review, closing conditions or other transaction requirements take longer than anticipated. Mexican regulatory approvals are specifically listed among the customary conditions.

Stage What it means for customers Timing stated by AT&T
Agreement announced AT&T remains the seller and says service continues without impact. October 13, 2026
Regulatory and other conditions The parties work toward approval and completion; no successor plan terms have been published. Pending
Closing Ownership transfers if all conditions are satisfied. Customer-facing changes, if any, should be communicated separately. Expected first quarter of 2027

Until a closing announcement is made, reports that the sale is already complete are premature. After closing, customers should rely on a formal notice for the effective date and any instructions rather than social-media speculation or unsolicited messages.

Will your AT&T Mexico service stop?

There is no indication that service will stop because of the announcement. AT&T’s stated position is that customers should see no impact while the transaction is pending. That includes domestic AT&T Mexico users, enterprise accounts and people from the United States who are traveling in Mexico.

A change in ownership does not automatically require a technical interruption. Mobile numbers, network access and account systems can continue during a corporate transition. Whether any systems are changed later is a separate question that depends on decisions the buyers have not yet announced.

If you are traveling from the United States

AT&T’s quoted assurance specifically includes customers traveling to Mexico from the U.S. Continue to use your existing roaming arrangement under its current terms unless AT&T sends a separate, authenticated notice. The announcement itself is not a roaming-policy change.

If you manage an enterprise account

AT&T says enterprise customers have no service impact from the announcement and that it will continue to deliver the expected experience. Keep existing contacts, service documentation and billing records. If your organization receives a migration notice later, have the account owner verify the effective date, support path and any technical actions before changing configurations.

Do you need a new SIM, phone or number?

Not solely because the sale was announced. The available customer information does not instruct subscribers to replace a SIM, exchange a handset, obtain a new number or port a line. Continue using the equipment and credentials that work today.

A successor could eventually choose to rebrand stores, issue replacement SIMs or move accounts to another billing platform, but none of those actions has been announced. Do not hand over account credentials or pay a “migration” charge based on an unsolicited text, call or email. Wait for a notice through an official AT&T channel or a formally identified successor channel and confirm the instruction independently.

Could your plan, price or contract change?

Those post-closing terms have not been published. No authoritative customer schedule currently specifies new monthly prices, data allowances, plan names, contract lengths, device-payment treatment or a process for assigning existing agreements.

Customer concern What is established now What has not been specified
Monthly price and plan Current service continues during the pending transaction. Future tariffs, plan names, allowances and promotional terms.
Telephone number No announcement requires a number change. Any future migration or number-portability procedure.
SIM and handset No replacement is currently instructed. Whether a later network or platform change could require new equipment.
Contract Your existing documents remain relevant to your account. Assignment, renewal, cancellation or amendment procedures after closing.
Device financing Keep making payments under the terms you have. How any outstanding balance would be administered by a successor.
Billing and support Use current AT&T channels while AT&T remains the seller. Future billing platform, invoices, payment methods and support contacts.
Coverage and roaming AT&T says the announcement causes no service impact. Long-term coverage roadmap and roaming arrangements after closing.

Do not cancel a plan, stop a device payment or accept a replacement contract simply because ownership is changing. First obtain the written terms and effective date of any proposed change, then compare them with your current agreement and applicable Mexican consumer protections.

What customers should do now

  1. Continue normal use. Keep your current SIM, handset, number and plan unless AT&T gives a specific instruction through an authenticated channel.
  2. Save your records. Download recent bills, plan descriptions, contract versions, device-payment schedules, receipts and important support messages. Include the account number and the date each document applied.
  3. Verify unusual requests. If someone asks for a SIM swap, password, one-time code, payment or immediate port-out, stop and contact AT&T through the support route you already trust. The sale announcement alone does not authorize such a request.
  4. Monitor formal notices. Look for a stated closing date, the legal entity responsible for service, new billing instructions, support contacts and a deadline for accepting or rejecting any revised terms.
  5. Keep enterprise and travel plans documented. Businesses should preserve service orders and escalation contacts; travelers should retain the roaming terms that applied when a trip was booked.

Separate regulatory task: linking your mobile line

The ownership announcement does not suspend other Mexican telecommunications requirements. AT&T Mexico’s official line-linking information says lines activated before January 9, 2026 must be linked under a schedule based on the last digit of the mobile number. The Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT) calendar published for that process extends through December 31, 2026.

That requirement is independent of the sale. If your line falls within the stated group, complete the linking procedure by the applicable date even though the transaction is pending. Keep the confirmation or receipt with your account records. A missed regulatory step should not be confused with a sale-related service change.

Why the dates matter

  • January 9, 2026: cutoff cited by AT&T Mexico for determining which previously activated lines follow the schedule.
  • Last digit of the mobile number: the scheduling method identified by AT&T Mexico.
  • December 31, 2026: final date shown in the CRT calendar for the listed final-digit schedule.

Who is buying AT&T Mexico?

The buyer group combines Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings. AT&T says Grupo Televisa has a strong operating presence in Mexican fixed-line broadband. It describes Fintech Holdings as bringing fresh capital, local knowledge and operational expertise in the Mexican wireless sector.

AT&T’s stated rationale is that a local operator is positioned to improve the customer value proposition and lead the business’s next growth phase. That is the sellers’ explanation for the transaction, not a guarantee of a specific price, coverage improvement or product launch.

What remains unknown after closing

No authoritative announcement in the available customer information resolves several issues that materially affect subscribers. Treat each as undecided until the new owner or service provider publishes binding terms.

  • The consumer-facing brand and whether the AT&T name remains in use.
  • New or grandfathered tariffs, data allowances, promotions and eligibility rules.
  • The billing platform, invoice format, payment methods and account-login process.
  • Roaming agreements, including arrangements for U.S. visitors in Mexico.
  • How existing contracts, device financing and outstanding balances will be administered.
  • Whether customers must accept revised terms, and how cancellation or number portability would work.
  • Network coverage, technology investments and any coverage roadmap.
  • Retail-store locations, customer-service channels and escalation procedures.

Because these details are absent, it would be inaccurate to promise that prices will fall, coverage will improve, numbers will stay unchanged or every customer will need a SIM replacement. The correct answer today is that those outcomes have not been decided publicly.

Consumer-protection context in Mexico

On January 31, 2026, Mexico’s consumer-protection agency Profeco reported suspending telecommunications-service sales at three AT&T establishments in Mexico City. Profeco said the stores were using a contract different from the latest version registered in the public adhesion-contract registry.

That enforcement event is separate from the ownership transaction and does not establish that your account is invalid or that service will be suspended. It does show why retaining the exact contract version, receipts and account correspondence matters. If a later notice proposes new terms, compare it with the document you accepted and ask for the applicable registered contract information.

How to evaluate a later successor notice

When formal post-closing offers or migration instructions appear, evaluate the change on the dimensions that affect your actual use:

  1. Price: monthly charge, taxes, activation fees and whether the amount is promotional or recurring.
  2. Allowance: data, voice, messaging, speed limits and overage treatment.
  3. Coverage: locations and technologies included, with any stated exclusions.
  4. Roaming: countries covered, travel-day limits, data caps and extra charges.
  5. Contract term: minimum commitment, renewal, cancellation and early-termination conditions.
  6. Device financing: remaining balance, payment recipient, interest and what happens if you switch plans.
  7. Billing and support: invoice delivery, payment deadline, authentication and contact channels.
  8. Number portability: whether you can keep your number and what steps or deadlines apply.

Save the notice as a PDF or screenshot with its publication date. If terms conflict with an older message, ask the provider to identify which document controls and when the change takes effect.

Bottom line

AT&T Mexico has been sold by agreement but not yet transferred. The expected closing is the first quarter of 2027, subject to Mexican regulatory approvals and other customary conditions. Until then, AT&T says customers—including U.S. travelers and enterprise users—should see no service impact. Keep using your service, complete any independent line-linking obligation, and preserve your account records. Prices, plans, branding, billing, roaming, contracts, device financing, number portability and coverage after closing remain unspecified and should be judged only from a later formal customer notice.
