Barbara Hepworth vs Henry Moore: How Their Sculptures Differ

Hepworth and Moore shared direct carving and pierced forms. Compare how material, holes, figure, landscape and Moore’s bronze practice shape their sculptures differently.

Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore shared the language of British modernist sculpture: both valued direct carving, treated stone and wood as active partners, and explored how a hole can transform a solid form. The clearest difference is not that one artist used openings and the other did not. It is how each sculpture balances material, mass, void, figure and setting. Hepworth’s statements place particular emphasis on carving each material according to its nature and on seeing the human figure within landscape. Moore’s documented career shows a related commitment to the character of stone, followed by a major expansion into bronze, where sectional casting and welding made larger, more open and pointed structures possible. These are recurring tendencies, not rules that describe every work by either artist.

The difference in one view

Look at an individual sculpture rather than trying to identify an artist from a generalized style. Start with what is physically in front of you: the material, the silhouette, the balance of solid and empty space, the treatment of the surface, and the way the work occupies its surroundings.

Question Barbara Hepworth Henry Moore
What they shared Modernist abstraction, direct carving, attention to the character of material and an interest in pierced form. Modernist abstraction, direct carving, attention to the character of material and an interest in pierced form.
Documented emphasis A dialogue between an idea, the hand and the particular qualities of stone or wood; abstract form and the figure in landscape. Direct carving in stone, followed by extensive experiments in bronze that enabled larger, open structures.
Openings Her near-abstract Pierced Form (1931–32) has a large central hole; her biography records that Moore took up the idea. Woman with Upraised Arms (1924–25) is an early example of carving through stone and anticipates his later use of holes to set solid against void.
How to interpret the hole Ask how the opening cuts into or organizes a compact mass, and how light and the surrounding landscape enter it. Ask how the opening separates, stretches or opens a body-like structure into the space around it, especially in later cast work.
Scale and technique Direct carving is central to her stated preference; do not assume she never modelled or used other processes. Bronze sections could be cast and welded, allowing forms that would be impractical to carve from one block; this did not mean he abandoned carving.

Both artists began from direct carving

What “direct carving” means

In direct carving, the process of cutting the material helps determine the final form instead of simply reproducing a fully resolved model. Tate identifies both Hepworth and Moore among notable direct carvers, so the method is a shared foundation rather than a dividing line. See Tate’s definition of direct carving for the art-historical term.

This distinction matters when reading photographs. A smooth outline does not prove that a sculpture was modelled first, and a visibly irregular surface does not by itself prove direct carving. A collection record, artist statement or conservation description is stronger evidence than appearance alone. The safest interpretation separates what can be observed—facets, cuts, seams and polish—from what must be documented about the making process.

Hepworth’s material-specific approach

Hepworth explained her preference in her 1932 text “The sculptor carves because he must”: “I have always preferred direct carving to modelling because I like the resistance of the hard material and feel happier working that way.” In the same body of writing, she stresses that an idea should be in harmony with the qualities of the chosen stone or wood, and that each material demands a direct way of being carved according to its nature. That makes material behavior part of the subject, not merely a technical obstacle. Her published statements are collected by the Barbara Hepworth writings archive.

For a Hepworth comparison, therefore, ask what the block permits and what the carving deliberately leaves intact. A rounded edge, a planar cut or a carefully retained thickness can be read as evidence of a negotiation with the stone or wood. This does not mean every Hepworth was made in exactly the same way; it means her own account gives the material a conspicuous role in the conception of form.

Moore’s respect for stone, then a change of scale

Moore described a comparable belief in “direct stone carving” and in keeping the material’s own quality and character. The Henry Moore Foundation’s account of his art and life also records a later shift: bronze could be cast in sections and welded into larger, strong structures. That process opened possibilities for pointed and open forms that would be difficult, or impossible, to carve directly from a single block of stone or wood.

The useful contrast is therefore one of emphasis and phase. Hepworth’s words foreground the hand’s negotiation with a particular material. Moore’s career demonstrates how a sculptor committed to carving could use bronze to test a new scale and a more extensible construction. Neither statement supports the simplified claim that Hepworth never modelled or that Moore stopped carving.

Holes were shared territory, not an exclusive signature

Hepworth’s early pierced form

Hepworth made a near-abstract alabaster Pierced Form in 1931–32 with a large central hole. Her biographical account says that the idea was taken up by her friend Moore and describes their shared exploration as a balance between concavities and convexities. The account is available in Alan Bowness’s life-and-work biography.

Alabaster is important here because the opening is not an added graphic mark. It is cut through a specific volume of stone, so its size, edge and changing thickness determine how the remaining mass reads. From one angle the aperture may look centered and stable; from another, the enclosing form can appear asymmetrical or more open. Those are observations to make at the object itself rather than assumptions based on the title.

Moore’s early carving through stone

The Henry Moore Foundation timeline identifies Woman with Upraised Arms (1924–25) as an early example of Moore carving through stone. It foreshadows his later use of a hole to set solid against void. The dates matter: both artists’ experiments belong to an evolving modernist conversation, not to a neat invention credited exclusively to one person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moore’s title also supplies a useful test. The phrase “upraised arms” gives the viewer a bodily action to search for, but the cut-through area complicates the body’s solidity. Compare the named gesture with the actual contour: does the void clarify an arm, separate masses, or become an independent geometric event? A title can guide looking without dictating a single interpretation.

What to look for in an opening

A hole is not automatically a symbol or a label. Examine what it does in the work you are viewing:

  • Enclosure: Is the void held inside a compact mass, or does it split the form into limbs, loops or projecting parts?
  • Scale: Is the opening a small puncture, a central aperture or a void large enough to become the dominant feature?
  • Edges: Are the edges taut and crisp, softly rounded, faceted by tools or marked by a cast surface?
  • Vision: Does the viewer see a wall, another body, the sky or the landscape through it?
  • Movement: Does the void make the sculpture feel stable and enclosed, or does it pull the eye through and beyond the object?
  • Thickness: Does the surrounding material remain substantial, taper toward the opening or break into separate structural elements?

These questions distinguish the experience of a particular sculpture more reliably than saying “Hepworth used holes” or “Moore used holes.” Both did.

Material changes what the sculpture can do

Stone, wood and alabaster

Direct carving preserves evidence of resistance: a cut plane, a rounded transition left by the tool, or a contour that follows a block’s limits. Hepworth’s writing asks the viewer to consider those limits as part of the form’s identity. Her alabaster Pierced Form, for example, makes the relationship between a soft-looking, light-colored stone and a decisive central opening inseparable from the sculpture’s meaning.

When comparing carved works, note whether the surface is polished, left matte, or varied across the form. Record visible facets and the direction of cuts, but do not confuse a photographic highlight with a tool mark. Light can make a shallow change in plane appear deeper than it is, while a polished area can hide evidence of earlier work.

Bronze as an assembled structure

Moore’s bronze practice changed the engineering as well as the appearance of a sculpture. Casting in sections and welding them together allowed him to enlarge a form, cantilever parts and leave more space between structural elements. Pointed projections and broad openings that would risk breaking a carved block could be constructed in separate pieces. When comparing a bronze to a carved stone, ask whether the apparent lightness comes from an actual void, a thin wall, a projecting limb or the way the cast sections meet.

Look closely for seams, joins and changes in surface that indicate an assembled construction. A bronze may preserve an organic swelling while also behaving like a framework. Its openness is not simply “less mass”; it is a different relationship between support, projection and surrounding air. The same formal idea can therefore feel more expansive in bronze than in a single carved block without making the bronze unrelated to Moore’s earlier stone practice.

Do not turn this into a material stereotype. Moore’s move toward bronze was an expansion of his possibilities, not proof that stone became irrelevant. Hepworth’s preference for direct carving is a documented emphasis, not evidence that every work followed one process.

Figure, abstraction and landscape

Hepworth’s figure in a larger environment

Hepworth wrote that Cornish land- and seascape inspired her and described the human figure in the country as a moving part of a greater whole. In her work, that idea can direct attention away from a self-contained object and toward relationships: body and horizon, upright form and rock, interior opening and the space beyond it. Her landscape statement appears with her other writings at barbarahepworth.org.uk/texts/.

This statement is especially useful when a Hepworth is seen outdoors. Note the ground plane, horizon, changing daylight and the route a viewer takes around the sculpture. The work may be experienced as an event in a place rather than as an isolated volume. That interpretation still needs to be tied to the specific installation; not every indoor work automatically carries the same environmental emphasis.

Do not make landscape a one-artist rule

The evidence cited here does not establish a matching, general statement that would justify saying landscape mattered only to Hepworth or that Moore’s sculpture should be read outside it. Instead, compare the setting of the actual work. A sculpture installed outdoors may use the sky, ground, changing light and the viewer’s walk around it; a gallery work may make the wall, plinth and sightline part of the experience. Those effects must be described from the work and its installation, not assigned to an artist in advance.

How much of the human figure remains

“Abstract” does not mean “without a bodily source.” For either artist, ask which clues survive: a torso-like volume, an arm or leg, a head, a reclining pose, or only an organic rhythm. Then ask whether the hole clarifies that reference or dissolves it. A compact pierced form can retain the memory of a body while becoming an autonomous arrangement of curves; a more open, constructed form can make the surrounding air as important as the remaining mass.

A close comparison of two early pierced works

Barbara Hepworth, Pierced Form (1931–32)

The named work is a near-abstract alabaster sculpture with a large central hole. Its basic comparison points are therefore clear: a specific stone, a carved surface, a concentrated mass and an opening that reorganizes the center. Look at the thickness of the surrounding material and the way the aperture changes as you move around it. The hole can be read simultaneously as an absence, a window and a measure of the stone that remains.

Ask how much the title identifies and how much it leaves open. “Pierced Form” names an action and a condition rather than a character or narrative. That wording encourages attention to the physical event of cutting through material, while the near-abstract shape keeps the interpretation from becoming a literal depiction.

Henry Moore, Woman with Upraised Arms (1924–25)

Moore’s work is identified as an early instance of carving through stone. The title retains a bodily action, while the opening makes the body’s solidity negotiable. Examine how the cut-through area relates to the raised-arm gesture, where the mass is thickest, and whether the viewer’s sightline passes through the sculpture or stops at an interior surface.

The date also places the work before the later bronze expansion described by the Henry Moore Foundation. It is consequently a useful reminder that Moore’s interest in voids did not begin with cast metal. The early carved example and later open bronzes should be connected as developments, not treated as interchangeable objects.

What the pairing proves—and what it does not

Placed together, the works show that pierced form was a shared field of experiment. They do not prove that one artist invented the hole, that every Hepworth is more abstract than every Moore, or that a single early work predicts an entire career. The useful comparison is formal and physical: alabaster against stone, a near-abstract central aperture against a figure identified by its title, and the different ways each opening makes solid material visible.

How to compare any Hepworth and Moore sculptures

  1. Record the material and process. Note stone, wood, alabaster or bronze, and whether the surface looks carved, cast, welded or worked by more than one method. Do not infer a process solely from a photograph if a collection record is available.
  2. Check the date and title. A 1924–25 carved work and a later bronze may share an interest in voids while belonging to different technical phases. Titles can preserve a figure, gesture or process that the form only partly reveals.
  3. Trace the silhouette. Stand back and follow the outer contour. Is it compact, elongated, upright, reclining, looped or constructed from separate projections?
  4. Map solid and void. Count the major openings and describe their position, size and edge treatment. Identify what becomes visible through each one.
  5. Test the figure reference. Look for bodily clues in the form and compare them with the title. Distinguish a recognizable pose from an organic or geometric abstraction.
  6. Inspect the surface. Record tool marks, facets, polish, patina, seams and changes in texture. Surface is evidence of making, not decoration added after the fact.
  7. Walk around the work. A hole may appear narrow from one angle and expansive from another. Note where the mass hides, frames or releases the surrounding space.
  8. Include the setting. Record plinth, floor, wall, garden, horizon and light. A sculpture’s relation to landscape should be argued from this encounter, not assumed from the artist’s name.
  9. Separate tendency from verdict. End by stating what this pair demonstrates and what it cannot establish about the artists’ complete oeuvres.

Common misconceptions to avoid

“Hepworth owned the hole” or “Moore invented it”

Neither claim fits the documented history. Hepworth’s 1931–32 pierced alabaster and Moore’s 1924–25 carved-through stone are evidence of related, developing practices. The opening belongs to neither artist as exclusive property.

“Direct carving is the difference between them”

It is not. Tate places both artists within direct-carving history. The distinction lies in what each artist said or did with that commitment: Hepworth’s emphasis on a material’s individual qualities, and Moore’s later use of cast and welded bronze to extend scale and openness.

“Moore abandoned stone”

The bronze phase should be understood as an expansion, not a clean replacement. His foundation’s account links the larger bronze structures to an earlier belief in direct carving and respect for material character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Hepworth was purely abstract”

Her work can be highly abstract, but her writing also addresses the human figure in the country and its relation to a greater whole. A near-abstract form may retain bodily or environmental associations without becoming a literal figure.

“Every work by one artist looks the same”

Both careers include changes in material, scale, abstraction and construction. A reliable attribution or interpretation begins with the object in front of you, not with a checklist of supposed signatures.

Questions readers often ask

Did Hepworth or Moore invent the sculptural hole?

No exclusive claim is supported here. Hepworth’s Pierced Form of 1931–32 and Moore’s Woman with Upraised Arms of 1924–25 document related experiments. Their biographies describe a shared exploration of concavity, convexity, solid and void.

Which artist was more committed to direct carving?

Both are recognized as direct carvers. Hepworth explicitly preferred direct carving to modelling and wrote about adapting the cut to each material’s qualities. Moore likewise described a belief in direct stone carving, but his later bronze work shows how his practice expanded beyond a single block of stone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did Moore use bronze?

Sectional casting and welding let Moore build larger, strong structures with pointed projections and broad openings that could be difficult or impossible to carve safely from one piece of stone or wood. Bronze extended the scale and structural possibilities of his sculpture; it did not erase his earlier commitment to carving.

Are Hepworth’s sculptures more abstract than Moore’s?

That is too broad to be a dependable rule. Compare specific works. Hepworth’s named Pierced Form is described as near-abstract, while Moore’s Woman with Upraised Arms retains a bodily action in its title. Individual sculptures vary in how much figure, gesture or organic reference remains.

Was landscape important only to Hepworth?

No such categorical contrast is established. Hepworth directly wrote about Cornish land- and seascape and the figure as part of a greater whole. For Moore, or for any particular work, describe the actual setting, sightline, light and relation to ground rather than assigning a landscape position in advance.

What is the quickest reliable way to compare two works?

Write down each work’s date, material and title; trace its silhouette; describe every major opening; inspect the surface for carving, casting or welding; then walk around it and record what the setting contributes. Finish by stating the limited conclusion your pair supports instead of generalizing to an entire career.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Hepworth or Moore invent the hole in modern sculpture?

No. Hepworth’s 1931–32 pierced alabaster and Moore’s 1924–25 carved-through stone show related experiments; neither artist exclusively owned the idea.

What is the main technical difference between them?

Both practiced direct carving. Hepworth emphasized adapting the carving to each material’s qualities, while Moore later used sectional bronze casting and welding to create larger, more open and pointed structures.

Why is Moore’s bronze work important in a comparison?

Bronze allowed sections to be cast and welded, making structures impractical to carve from one stone or wood block. It expanded Moore’s scale and openness without replacing his earlier carving practice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Hepworth’s sculptures always more abstract than Moore’s?

No. Compare individual works. Hepworth’s Pierced Form is near-abstract, while Moore’s Woman with Upraised Arms retains a bodily reference, but neither example defines an entire oeuvre.

How should landscape enter the comparison?

Hepworth explicitly wrote about Cornish land- and seascape and the figure as part of a greater whole. For any work, however, judge landscape effects from the actual installation, light, ground and sightlines.

What should I examine first when comparing two sculptures?

Check the date, material and process; trace the silhouette; map solid and void; assess figure references and surface; then walk around the work and include its setting.

The Bottom Line

Hepworth and Moore shared direct carving and a sustained interest in pierced form. Hepworth’s own words stress the resistance and particular character of stone or wood, along with the figure’s place in landscape. Moore’s path from carved stone into cast-and-welded bronze opened larger, more pointed and spacious structures. The most accurate comparison remains work-specific: material, date, mass, opening, surface, figure and setting together—not a single signature difference.
