There is no evidence in the sources reviewed that “Big Tech” has established an over-leveraged short position in Backbone.js. The official project and npm identify Backbone.js as open-source JavaScript software, not a publicly identified financial security. The headline’s financial language can work as metaphor, but it should not be read as a substantiated market claim.
What Backbone.js actually is
Backbone.js is a JavaScript library for adding structure to applications. The project describes its building blocks as models with key-value binding and custom events, collections, views with declarative event handling, and integration with a RESTful JSON interface. The project identifies Backbone as an open-sourced component of DocumentCloud. Backbone.js project repository

In practical terms, Backbone provides conventions and components for organizing application data and interface behavior. It does not, by that description, represent company shares, debt, or another financial instrument that can be shorted.

What a “short position” would mean here
In finance, a short position generally involves exposure to the price decline of an identified asset, often by borrowing and selling it or through a derivative. To substantiate a claim that a group holds such a position, reporting would need to identify the relevant instrument and provide credible evidence about the position and its size or leverage.
#1 Best Overall
The sources available for this topic do not identify a Backbone.js security or provide evidence of a short position connected to the library. That does not prove that no private or obscure financial arrangement exists; it means the literal assertion is unsupported by the evidence reviewed. “Big Tech” is also too broad to identify a specific company or position.
What Backbone.js includes
Models, collections, and views
Backbone’s models represent application data and support key-value binding and custom events. Collections organize groups of models and provide enumerable functions. Views handle interface presentation and declarative events. These components are intended to give JavaScript-heavy applications structure while connecting to an application’s existing data interface. Browser navigation
The official documentation describes Backbone.History as managing browser navigation using pushState and real URLs, or hash-based fragments, with polling fallback when neither mechanism is available. That is the project’s description of the module; it should not be taken as current guidance on browser support or platform requirements. Backbone.js documentation

The repository and npm listing showed Backbone.js version 1.6.1 in snapshots consulted for this article. npm listed the package under the MIT license. Those details can change, so check the live project and registry pages before relying on them for a current technical decision. Project repository npm package listing
Usage statistics are also not a direct measure of active developers or production deployments. A BuiltWith snapshot surfaced estimates of 478,905 live sites and 3,306,583 historical sites, but these are vendor-detected counts rather than an official census, and the available result did not establish enough methodology or exact measurement timing to treat them as definitive current totals. BuiltWith Backbone.js statistics
The npm listing surfaced 867,410 weekly downloads in a snapshot crawled roughly three weeks before the research was completed. That registry figure is volatile and may include automated or repeated downloads; it should not be equated with users or sites running Backbone.js in production. npm package listing

How to evaluate a claim about Backbone.js
- Ask what is being shorted. A credible financial claim should name an identifiable asset or instrument, not only a software project.
- Look for evidence of the position. A claim about leverage or a large holder needs attributable financial reporting or primary documentation.
- Separate software adoption from market exposure. Package downloads and technology-detection estimates describe software activity imperfectly; they do not demonstrate an investment position.
- Read metaphor as metaphor. The headline may suggest that powerful technology companies are betting against or undermining an older library, but that interpretation is an opinion or analogy—not proof of a financial short.
