You can build leg strength without doing barbell back squats. Leg presses, step-ups, lunges or split squats, and dumbbell squat variations are practical options; the right choice depends on your goal, available equipment, and which movements you can perform comfortably. No single option is best for everyone, and these exercises are not proven to transfer equally to back-squat performance.
How to choose an alternative
Start with the outcome you want. General leg strength and muscle development allow more exercise choices than improving your barbell back squat, which depends on practicing that specific lift. Consider these factors:

- Equipment: A leg press requires a machine; step-ups need a stable platform; dumbbell squats need dumbbells. Lunges and split squats can be performed with bodyweight or added load.
- Comfort and tolerance: Choose a movement you can perform comfortably and control. Balance, coordination, and tolerance for single-leg work can influence whether step-ups, lunges, or split squats suit you.
- Movement pattern: Most of the options below are squat- or knee-dominant patterns. Hinge exercises such as deadlift variations train a related but distinct pattern and can complement them.
There is no evidence in the sources cited here that establishes a universal ranking or proves equal carryover from these alternatives to the barbell back squat.

Practical back squat alternatives
| Exercise | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Leg press | Stable, machine-based lower-body pressing. NASM associates it with quadriceps, glute, and hamstring strength. | Requires access to a leg-press machine and is not mechanically identical to a free-weight squat. |
| Step-up | A squat-pattern alternative that can train the legs one side at a time. | Requires a stable step or platform and enough balance and control for the chosen height. |
| Lunge or split squat | A squat-pattern option that can be done with bodyweight or external resistance. | Balance and tolerance for single-leg work may affect suitability. |
| Dumbbell squat variation | Adds external resistance to a squat pattern and can be used at home or in a gym. | Requires dumbbells for loaded versions; bodyweight options remain available. |
| Hinge variation | Deadlift and other hinge variations can complement squat- and lunge-pattern exercises in lower-body programming. | Trains a distinct movement pattern, so it is not a direct replacement for knee-dominant work. |
How to program your choice
Train consistently and increase resistance over time as your ability allows. The American College of Sports Medicine’s 2026 update summarizes evidence from 137 systematic reviews representing more than 30,000 participants. Its general guidance for strength in healthy adults includes heavier loads at about 80% of one-repetition maximum for 2–3 sets per exercise. This is broad guidance, not a personalized prescription or a requirement to use that load.

ACSM reports that, for the average healthy adult, equipment type—including machines versus free weights—did not consistently affect outcomes. Its summary also notes that effective resistance training can use varied setups, including bands, bodyweight, and home-based routines. That supports flexibility in how you train; it does not mean every exercise is interchangeable for every person or goal. NASM names leg presses, step-ups, and lunges as useful squat-pattern alternatives, while NSCA programming guidance combines squat/lunge variations with deadlift/hinge variations.
If your goal is a stronger back squat
Alternatives can train related leg muscles, but the sources cited here do not establish that any of them maintains or improves barbell back-squat performance equally well. If squat-specific strength is the priority, an alternative should not be assumed to replace practice of the back squat. How to adapt training depends on why you are avoiding it and what movements you can perform.

If pain or a medical restriction is involved
The general recommendations above are for healthy adults, not a treatment plan for pain, injury, or post-surgical recovery. The evidence cited here does not identify one safest replacement for those situations. If you have symptoms or clinical restrictions, seek guidance from a qualified clinician; a qualified coach may also help select and adapt exercises when appropriate.
