It does not, by itself, protect an unlocked or compromised device, stop a recipient from sharing what they can read, encrypt every copy stored elsewhere, or hide all data associated with a conversation.
Meta described personal messages and calls as becoming encrypted by default in its March 2024 explainer. Because the rollout was not instantaneous, check the protection indicator in the specific chat rather than assuming every conversation has the same status.

What does Messenger end-to-end encryption protect?
In an end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) conversation, the message is encrypted on the sender’s device and is intended to be readable at the recipient’s device. Meta says message and call content in such a conversation is protected from device to device, and that Meta cannot see or listen to it while it is being delivered. Its March 2024 Messenger explainer describes personal messages and calls as being made end-to-end encrypted by default.

“Default” describes Meta’s rollout direction, not proof that a particular chat has already updated. Meta’s December 2023 rollout announcement said the change could take time. Look for the chat’s own indication that messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption, and check Messenger’s current in-app settings if the status is unclear.

What does encryption not protect?
Plaintext on an accessible or compromised device
Encryption during delivery cannot protect a message once it is displayed on a device someone can access. Someone using an unlocked phone, or malware or spyware controlling a participant’s device, may be able to read content at that endpoint. Meta’s 2018 explanation of end-to-end encryption identifies access to a device as a limitation. The cryptography can protect the transfer without securing the device itself.
What a recipient chooses to share
A recipient who can read a message can copy it, photograph the screen, or disclose it in another way. That is an endpoint and recipient limitation, not a failure of encryption during delivery. The cited Meta material does not establish a current Messenger guarantee that detects or prevents screenshots.

Copies outside the encrypted conversation
End-to-end encryption does not automatically extend to every copy a person exports, downloads, or backs up with another service. Meta’s background explanation warns that copies held outside the service, including cloud backups, are beyond the protection of the encrypted communication itself. Treat the security of any such copy according to the storage service and method used.

Every signal associated with the conversation
E2EE protects communication content, not necessarily information associated with a communication but outside its content. Meta’s 2022 human-rights assessment makes that distinction. The cited sources do not provide a comprehensive current inventory of Messenger metadata or its retention periods, so encryption should not be taken as a promise that every interaction or identity signal is hidden.

Content submitted in a report
Ordinary encrypted delivery is different from a user choosing to report a conversation. Meta’s December 2023 announcement says users can report encrypted content and that Meta can see earlier versions of an edited message if that message is reported. Do not treat the ordinary-delivery privacy statement as applying unchanged to content deliberately submitted for review.

Encrypted delivery and the ability to restore chat history are related but distinct parts of Messenger’s privacy model. Meta’s March 2024 guide describes secure storage as a way to preserve encrypted chat history for access on other devices. It names a six-digit PIN or a virtual key stored in Google Drive or iCloud as access methods, and recommends secure storage for people who want to restore chats after changing devices. Without secure storage, Meta warns that messages and media may be permanently lost if a device is lost.

Meta’s Help Center guidance on secure storage says deleting secure storage permanently deletes the encrypted chat history and Messenger cannot restore that backup. Before deleting or resetting it, understand which recovery method is set up and check the current in-app restore flow.

It illustrates why the encrypted history and the way a key is stored or recovered should be considered separately, rather than treating an older description as a complete account of the current feature.

A practical way to assess a Messenger chat
- Check the conversation: Confirm that its own indicator says messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption.
- Protect the endpoints: Use a device lock, keep device software maintained, and take suspected compromise seriously; encryption in transit cannot secure plaintext displayed on an exposed device.
- Think beyond the chat: A recipient may share readable content, and copies saved outside Messenger have their own storage protections.
- Review recovery before changing storage: Know whether you use a PIN or a stored key and what deleting secure storage would mean for your history.
