The same financing is being reported in both currencies, not as two separate rounds. Led by Astanor Ventures and Cibus Capital, the funding will help expand production and international deployment of robots that pick, trim and pack cultivated mushrooms.
What 4AG Robotics does
4AG Robotics develops autonomous harvesting systems for commercial mushroom farms. The company is headquartered in Salmon Arm and has expanded beyond its B.C. manufacturing base with a Vancouver office. Its earlier identity was TechBrew Robotics, founded in 1999, before the business narrowed its focus to mushroom automation. Sean O’Connor is identified as chief executive in the Series B announcement.

The company’s current product materials highlight the Forager HX800, designed to pick, trim and pack mushrooms into punnets. Earlier materials described the Forager HX400 bulk-box system, so model names should not be treated as interchangeable.

How the harvesting robot works
- Attaches to existing racks: The system is designed to retrofit standard Dutch-rack mushroom infrastructure rather than require a complete farm rebuild.
- Sees harvest-ready mushrooms: Computer vision assesses individual mushrooms and identifies which are ready to pick.
- Grips and harvests: A suction-based gripper removes the selected mushroom while attempting to avoid nearby crop.
- Trims stems: The machine performs stem trimming after picking.
- Packs product: Depending on the configuration, mushrooms go into bulk boxes or punnets.
- Moves through rooms: The mobile platform can travel between growing rooms and bring product toward the front of the room.
4AG describes the platform as fully autonomous and vision-guided. Public materials document harvesting, trimming, packing, thinning and room logistics; they do not establish that the robot performs every task on a mushroom farm. Disease detection and yield optimization are described as development priorities rather than independently verified production results.
Why mushrooms are a difficult robotics problem
Mushroom production offers frequent, repeatable work for automation, but the crop is far from uniform. Mushrooms can mature quickly, and workers may need to make harvesting and thinning decisions continuously rather than during one seasonal pass. Tall shelving creates awkward, repetitive working positions, while humid rooms and cluttered layouts are demanding environments for mobile equipment.
- Mushrooms vary in size, orientation, density and maturity.
- A gripper must avoid bruising the selected mushroom and disturbing surrounding growth.
- Racks, floors, conveyors and packing lines differ between farms even when the underlying system is standardized.
- Real operations require responses to blocked routes, full boxes, obscured crops, faults and sanitation procedures.
4AG’s financing announcement says harvesting can account for up to half of production costs in Western markets; that is a company claim, not a universal independently measured figure.

Where the robots are operating
According to 4AG’s announcement, the platform was already in use in Canada, Ireland and Australia, with deployments planned or underway in the Netherlands and United States. The company’s harvesting-robot page references Highline, Monaghan, South Mill Champs and Banken. Those customer references, deployment counts and operating locations are time-sensitive company-reported information.
4AG says it has deposits for more than 40 additional robots. A deposit is not the same as an installed or operational machine. The company also says its fleet can pick up to 1 million mushrooms per week, a figure quoted from Cibus in the financing release.
Why investors see a business opportunity
Labor pressure
Commercial growers face recruitment and retention problems in physically demanding harvesting jobs. Automating the harvesting task could reduce exposure to labor shortages, although farms would still need people for crop management, supervision, sanitation, maintenance, exception handling, logistics and support.

Retrofit adoption
A system that works with existing Dutch racks may be easier to evaluate than a complete facility rebuild. Compatibility still depends on rack dimensions, room geometry, crop configuration, conveyors, floors and packaging equipment.
Frequent utilization
Because mushrooms are harvested repeatedly, a robot may have more opportunities to generate value than equipment used for a single annual field operation. The economics depend on utilization, uptime, crop prices, labor costs and the farm’s ability to keep the system supplied with work.
Data and software potential
Repeated machine-vision observations could eventually support harvest timing, thinning, yield forecasts and disease monitoring. Astanor and Voyager have highlighted those possibilities. Voyager also described a direct-to-grower model and reported fourfold year-over-year revenue growth; that is investor commentary, not audited financial disclosure.

Market size claims
4AG’s materials cite different projections for the global mushroom industry: more than $70 billion by 2030 in the financing announcement and $60 billion by 2030 on its About page. These are company-provided estimates, not a settled industry consensus, and the difference matters when assessing the size of the addressable market.
What a grower should evaluate
- Compatibility with existing shelving, room layouts and mushroom varieties.
- Required harvesting speed, pack-out quality and tolerance for misses or damage.
- Bulk-box versus punnet-packing requirements.
- Integration with conveyors, cold storage, quality control and shipping.
- Installation time, room-to-room mobility and sanitation between crops.
- Maintenance response, replacement parts, operator supervision and worker safety.
- Total cost of ownership compared with wages, overtime, turnover and recruitment.
- Whether the projected return survives downtime, disease, lower crop prices or underuse.
4AG does not publish a standard purchase price, lease rate, installation fee, service contract or public ROI calculator. Its financing release quotes a company expectation that growers seek a return in under three years, but that is not independently verified guidance.
What is proven—and what remains unknown
The financing demonstrates that investors are backing commercial expansion, and the company reports deployments across three countries plus additional deposits. It does not, by itself, prove that 40 more robots are installed, that all deployments have moved beyond trials, or that the machines replace a farm’s entire harvesting workforce.

Public materials do not provide independent testing for first-attempt pick rate, damage rate, missed mushrooms, uptime, intervention frequency, sanitation performance, payback period or total labor reduction. They also do not set out a complete exception-handling and safety audit for every target country. Those measures are essential for comparing a robot with human pickers or other automation approaches.
What the C$40 million enables
The Series B gives 4AG capital to increase manufacturing capacity in Salmon Arm, build field-service and customer-success teams, support deployments in additional mushroom-growing markets and develop punnet packing, disease detection and yield-optimization features. Whether that investment turns promising technology into durable commercial infrastructure will depend on repeatable performance at grower sites, not just funding or deposits.
For commercial growers, the practical next step is a deployment assessment through 4AG’s harvesting-robot page or its official website. Pricing and standardized purchase terms are not publicly listed.
