Yes—an Apple Watch can control an iPhone’s Live Listen session and show its Live Listen Captions. The iPhone remains the microphone and transcription device: place it near the speaker, stream the sound to compatible AirPods, Beats headphones, or Made for iPhone hearing devices, then use the nearby watch to control the session and read the text.
This is not standalone speech recognition on the watch. The setup below applies to supported U.S. configurations, languages, and regions.

What you need
Check these requirements before opening the controls:
| Requirement | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| iPhone software | iOS 26 or later for Live Captions with Live Listen. Apple’s guide: Live Listen and supported devices. |
| Apple Watch | A nearby, paired watch running the current supported watchOS software. Apple’s watch guide documents this feature for watchOS 26: Apple Watch Live Listen controls. |
| Account | The iPhone and watch must use the same Apple Account. |
| Audio destination | A Made for iPhone hearing device, compatible AirPods, or a supported Beats product connected to the iPhone. Apple specifically lists AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro, Beats Fit Pro, and Powerbeats Fit for Live Listen support; confirm your exact model. |
| Placement | The iPhone must be close to the person or sound source, with its microphone unobstructed. |
Apple says Live Listen with the listed AirPods and Beats requires iOS 14.3 or later, but Live Captions with Live Listen requires iOS 26 or later. Availability can vary by language, country, and region.

Step 3: Start Live Listen and open Live Listen Captions
- Put the iPhone near the speaker, lecturer, or other sound source.
- Press the Apple Watch side button to open Control Center.
- Tap Hearing Controls.
- In the Hearing Devices window, scroll to Live Listen.
- Turn on Live Listen.
- Tap Live Listen Captions to display the near-real-time transcription on the watch.
The iPhone captures the nearby audio and generates the captions. The connected hearing device or headphones deliver the streamed sound, while the watch provides the remote controls and text display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRewind or return to live audio
During the session, Apple provides controls to go back 10 seconds, return to the live stream, and stop Live Listen. Rewind is useful when a sentence was missed, but it does not turn the captions into a guaranteed verbatim transcript.

Live Captions and Live Listen Captions are different
General iPhone Live Captions
The iPhone’s general Live Captions feature can transcribe spoken audio in supported apps, including FaceTime and Podcasts, and can transcribe conversations picked up by the iPhone microphone. Apple documents availability on iPhone 11 or later, subject to language, country, and region limits. Its setup path is Settings > Accessibility > Live Captions, where you can choose microphone or iPhone-audio transcription: Apple’s Live Captions guide.
Live Listen Captions on the watch
Live Listen Captions is the control inside the Hearing Devices/Live Listen session used in this workflow. Turning on the general iPhone Live Captions panel alone does not automatically put captions on the watch; start Live Listen and select its caption control from Hearing Controls.

When this setup helps—and when it does not
Good use cases
- A conversation in a noisy restaurant when the iPhone can sit near the speaker.
- A lecture, meeting, or presentation where amplified audio and a wrist display are useful.
- Following nearby speech while keeping the phone on a table rather than holding it.
- Using text as visual reinforcement when audio is difficult to understand.
Important limits
- The iPhone must remain near the sound source; the watch does not replace its microphone.
- Wireless range, background noise, distance, microphone obstruction, and speaker clarity can reduce audio or caption quality.
- Captions are not available in every language, country, or region, and accuracy varies.
- Live Listen is consumer accessibility technology, not a replacement for professional hearing advice or a properly fitted hearing device.
- Apple warns not to rely on Live Captions in high-risk or emergency situations: Apple Watch user guide.
Troubleshooting
Hearing Controls is missing
- Open Control Center on the watch, tap Edit, and add Accessibility > Hearing Controls.
- Confirm Remote Control is enabled at Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Live Listen on the iPhone.
- Update both devices and verify they use the same Apple Account.
Live Listen does not appear
- Connect a supported AirPods, Beats, or Made for iPhone hearing device and select it as the audio output.
- Confirm the iPhone has iOS 26 or later for Live Captions with Live Listen.
- Keep the watch near the paired iPhone.
- Start Live Listen directly on the iPhone as a fallback. Apple’s instructions are here: iPhone Live Listen guide.
Audio is faint or distorted
- Move the iPhone closer to the speaker and uncover its microphone.
- Reduce competing noise and check that the headphones or hearing devices are correctly worn.
- Stop and restart Live Listen. Starting it from the iPhone can show whether the fault is with watch control or with the Live Listen connection.
Captions are absent or inaccurate
- Make sure Live Listen is active, then choose Live Listen Captions in Hearing Controls.
- Check iOS 26, language, and regional availability.
- Ask the speaker to repeat or rephrase important information and use the 10-second rewind control when available.
- Do not use the transcript as the sole basis for emergency, medical, legal, or other high-stakes decisions.
Alternative: use Live Captions directly on the iPhone
If you need captions for phone or app audio rather than a nearby Live Listen source, use Settings > Accessibility > Live Captions on a supported iPhone. That feature and Live Listen Captions have different entry points and purposes; the Apple Watch procedure above specifically controls an iPhone Live Listen session.

Bottom line
An Apple Watch can be a convenient controller and wrist display for iPhone Live Listen Captions. Enable Remote Control, add Hearing Controls, place the iPhone near the speaker, and select Live Listen Captions. The iPhone, compatible audio hardware, current software, same-account pairing, and regional support remain essential.
