AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud: Choose by Workload, Not Feature Lists

There is no universally best or cheapest cloud. AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud (GCP) can all run a typical web application, but the bill, latency, compliance position and day-to-day effort change with your Region, architecture, data flows, discounts, licensing and team skills. Choose the provider that minimizes operating friction and exit risk for the specific system, then prove the choice with a workload-level estimate and a small production-like test.

A Microsoft estate usually starts with Azure; an analytics-heavy or Kubernetes-centric design is a strong Google Cloud candidate; AWS is the broadest starting point when you need unusual infrastructure, a large ecosystem or mature community coverage. Those are starting hypotheses, not rankings.

Why feature-by-feature cloud comparisons mislead

Service catalogs make the providers look interchangeable: each offers virtual machines, object storage, managed databases, Kubernetes, serverless functions and AI services. The equivalent product names conceal the costs around them. A database in one Region may have a different price and availability profile in another; a design that sends large volumes between zones or out to users can make network transfer larger than compute; and a discounted enterprise agreement can reverse an on-demand price comparison.

Consider the same three-tier application: web servers, a managed relational database and object storage. Placing it near users, keeping replicas in another Region, exporting logs to a security account and serving media globally creates a different bill from a private, single-Region deployment. The right comparison is therefore the workload and its operating context, not the number of check marks in a feature matrix.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the following five axes in order. A hard constraint on an early axis should disqualify an otherwise attractive provider.

  1. Workload economics: steady or spiky compute, storage class, database engine, accelerator needs, egress and discount commitments.
  2. Organizational fit: identity, licensing, existing contracts, team skills, hiring market and support model.
  3. Data and sovereignty: required country or Region, latency, residency rules, sector controls and sovereign-cloud requirements.
  4. Platform leverage: analytics, Kubernetes, AI, serverless, managed databases and backbone networking.
  5. Portability and exit cost: open data formats, standard interfaces, containers, infrastructure as code, export paths and dependence on proprietary services.

How the three providers differ in practice

AWS: breadth and ecosystem maturity

AWS is the sensible first candidate when you need the widest selection of infrastructure patterns, a mature partner ecosystem or an unusual combination of services. The 2026 workload comparison cited for this guide calls AWS the market leader and emphasizes its broad catalog and community resources. That breadth also creates complexity: there are often several ways to deploy the same component, each with different network, observability and operational consequences.

Do not treat a default Region or on-demand virtual-machine rate as an AWS quote. AWS states in its 2025 Well-Architected Framework cost guidance that “Resource pricing may be different in each Region” and that “Factoring in Region cost helps you pay the lowest overall price for this workload.” Model the exact Region, architecture, transfer paths, support tier and commitment plan. AWS is a strong fit when those choices buy capabilities you actually need; it is a poor fit when the team cannot govern the resulting sprawl.

Azure: the natural extension of a Microsoft estate

Azure deserves the first proof-of-concept when your organization already uses Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), Windows Server, SQL Server, Microsoft 365 or hybrid datacenters. Native identity, policy and monitoring integration can remove migration work and reduce the number of platforms administrators must learn. Existing licensing arrangements and enterprise agreements may also change the effective price.

Compare the complete agreement and architecture, not an isolated VM line item. Include private connectivity, firewall and load-balancer charges, backup, cross-Region replication, data transfer and the operational cost of integrating on-premises systems. Azure can be the lower-friction option even when a single compute SKU is not the cheapest, because fewer identity, licensing and management changes are required.

Google Cloud: analytics, Kubernetes and selected AI workloads

Start with Google Cloud when the design is centered on BigQuery, Dataflow, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), Vertex AI or Google’s global network. Its data-processing and Kubernetes tooling can reduce glue code for teams already comfortable with Google’s engineering model. That advantage is workload-specific: a conventional Microsoft application may gain little from moving its identity, database and operations model just to obtain a lower list price.

“Cheaper” is a hypothesis to test with current regional estimates. Include BigQuery scan volume, streaming ingestion, GKE cluster management, GPU or TPU utilization, storage lifecycle and egress to users or another provider. A low compute rate can be overwhelmed by data movement or by rebuilding enterprise controls that Azure already supplies.

Score providers against the five decision axes

The table is a qualitative screening tool, not a universal league table. Mark a provider “candidate” only after it passes your non-negotiable Region, compliance and latency requirements.

Axis AWS Azure Google Cloud What to verify
Workload economics Many instance, storage and purchasing choices; cost modeling can be complex. Effective cost may improve with Microsoft licensing and existing agreements. Can be compelling for data analytics and selected Kubernetes or AI designs. Region, utilization pattern, storage tiers, database, egress and discount terms.
Organizational fit Large skills and partner ecosystem; broad service surface to govern. Strongest starting point for Microsoft identity, Windows, SQL Server and hybrid operations. Fits teams with Google-style data, Kubernetes and platform-engineering skills. Current contracts, staff capability, hiring market, support and training.
Data and sovereignty Many Regions and specialized offerings; availability varies by service. Broad enterprise and hybrid portfolio; sovereign options depend on geography and service. Global network and Regions; verify each required service and local-control requirement. Residency, cross-border transfers, latency, sector rules and operator access.
Platform leverage Very broad catalog and mature ecosystem. Integrated Microsoft, hybrid and enterprise management stack. BigQuery, Dataflow, GKE, Vertex AI and network strengths for suitable workloads. Whether a managed service removes enough work to justify its coupling.
Portability and exit Container and open-source options exist, alongside many proprietary interfaces. Same mix of portable foundations and Azure-specific services. Same mix; analytics services can create deep data-model dependencies. Export format, API compatibility, egress price, rebuild effort and tested restore.

Build a cost model that reflects the real system

Start with a diagram of every component and arrow. Record where data enters, where it is processed, where it is stored, how often it is replicated and where it leaves the provider. Then price the same design in each provider’s current calculator for the same Region or an explicitly equivalent one.

Illustrative scenario estimates

A cited 2026 consultant comparison gives the following pre-discount ranges. They are scenario estimates, not universal prices; recalculate them for your Region, architecture, utilization, transfer and commercial agreement.

Scenario AWS Azure Google Cloud
Three-tier web application $850–$1,100 per month $800–$1,050 per month $780–$1,000 per month
Data-analytics platform $3,200–$4,500 per month $2,800–$4,000 per month $2,200–$3,200 per month
20-service Kubernetes system $2,500–$3,500 per month $2,200–$3,200 per month $2,100–$3,000 per month

The ranges do not establish that Google Cloud is always cheapest, Azure is always second or AWS is always most expensive. They show how a particular set of assumptions can produce overlapping results. Region selection, reservations or savings plans, committed-use discounts, license benefits, support, idle capacity and network topology can move a result outside these bands.

Include the costs that feature tables omit

  • Compute shape and utilization: price steady workloads with commitments only when you can forecast usage; model burst capacity at on-demand rates.
  • Storage lifecycle: separate hot, cool and archival data, request charges and retrieval fees, not just gigabytes stored.
  • Database behavior: include provisioned capacity, replicas, backups, snapshots, I/O and license-included versus bring-your-own-license options.
  • Network: count Internet egress, inter-Region replication, cross-zone traffic, private-link endpoints, NAT gateways and inspection appliances.
  • Operations: monitoring ingestion, log retention, security scanning, managed control planes, support and the staff time to operate them.
  • Commercial terms: enterprise discounts, reservations, committed-use plans, marketplace charges and minimum-spend obligations.

Boston Consulting Group reported in 2025 that “Studies indicate that up to 30% of cloud spending is wasted.” Treat that as a warning to measure idle resources and architecture leakage, not as a guaranteed saving. A provider with a slightly higher list price can be cheaper after right-sizing and lower operational effort.

Let organizational fit change the shortlist

When Microsoft identity and licensing dominate

If users, administrators and applications already depend on Microsoft identity, Windows or SQL Server, Azure can reduce the number of authentication bridges, policy translations and license decisions. Test joiner-mover-leaver workflows, privileged access, hybrid DNS, network connectivity and database compatibility in the proof of concept. Count avoided migration work as a real economic benefit, while still pricing Azure networking and data transfer.

When platform-engineering skills dominate

A team experienced with Kubernetes, Terraform-style infrastructure as code, open-source observability and Linux can operate any of the three, but its existing runbooks and hiring pipeline still matter. A service that looks managed on paper may require a new skill set for upgrades, quota management or incident response. Ask each provider for the operational responsibilities your team retains, then include training and on-call burden in the decision.

When support and contracts matter

Compare support response targets, escalation paths, account coverage and the terms attached to committed spend. A low unit price is not useful if the organization must buy unused capacity or cannot obtain help during a regional incident. Align the contract term with the confidence you have in the architecture and its exit plan.

Make geography and sovereignty a gate, not a late optimization

Choose an allowed country or Region before optimizing price. AWS recommends selecting Regions using business, data-privacy, performance and security requirements. Apply the same discipline to Azure and Google Cloud: verify that every required service, backup target, key-management option and support function is available where the data must remain.

Latency-sensitive systems may need compute, database and users in the same geography. A cheaper Region can become slower and more expensive when requests or replication cross borders. Residency rules may also govern logs, support access, encryption keys and disaster-recovery copies, not only the primary database.

BCG describes sovereign cloud as a response to national control, local governance and operational independence. If your sector requires sovereign operation, identify who controls the infrastructure, who can access data, where support personnel are located and what legal jurisdiction applies. A standard commercial Region may not satisfy those conditions even when it is physically nearby.

Design portability before you need to leave

The OECD’s 2025 analysis warns that customers can face “technical, contractual, and financial obstacles” when migrating providers. It also notes that fees for moving data out of a provider’s cloud may act as “a de facto penalty for leaving the service.” Egress and proprietary interfaces therefore belong in the initial architecture review, not in a crisis plan.

Practical controls

  • Keep authoritative data in portable formats where feasible, and document export, import, validation and reconciliation procedures.
  • Use containers and infrastructure as code for components that benefit from portability. Pin versions and test a clean deployment outside the original account.
  • Place provider-specific databases, queues and AI APIs behind application interfaces so business logic does not depend on one vendor’s client library.
  • Measure egress by application and environment. Set budgets and alerts before a replication job or analytics export becomes a surprise invoice.
  • Run restore and migration exercises. A written export command is not evidence that the data, permissions, indexes and recovery-point objectives can be rebuilt.
  • Record the operational value of managed services: upgrades, backups, scaling, security patches and on-call work that another provider or a self-managed stack would require you to rebuild.

Portability is not a checkbox. It is a set of tested procedures with an explicit cost and recovery time. Total portability is rarely economical; concentrate it on authoritative data, critical interfaces and the components most likely to constrain a future move.

A workload-specific comparison procedure

  1. Write the workload contract. Document users, peak and average traffic, latency targets, availability objective, retention, recovery-point and recovery-time objectives, regulatory boundaries and expected growth.
  2. Draw the data-flow map. Mark every ingress, replication link, backup, log sink, third-party integration and egress destination. Estimate monthly gigabytes and request counts.
  3. Set hard gates. Eliminate Regions or providers that cannot meet residency, sovereign-operation, service-availability, latency or licensing requirements.
  4. Build equivalent architectures. Keep the application behavior, redundancy level, database class, observability and security controls comparable. Do not compare a highly managed design with a do-it-yourself one without pricing the labor.
  5. Price three operating states. Model normal utilization, a growth case and a failure or recovery case. Show on-demand exposure, commitment assumptions, egress and support on every estimate.
  6. Run a production-like proof of concept. Exercise authentication, deployment, autoscaling, backups, restore, regional failover, logging, incident response and data export. Measure latency and operator steps, not only throughput.
  7. Review exit cost. Estimate data-transfer fees, temporary dual running, conversion or re-indexing, application changes, retraining and the time to reproduce security and compliance controls.
  8. Choose and recheck. Select the provider with the lowest total operating friction and acceptable risk, record the assumptions, and schedule a review when traffic, contracts, Regions or regulations change.

Decision tree: where to start

  • Existing Microsoft identity, Windows, SQL Server, Microsoft 365 or hybrid infrastructure? Make Azure the first candidate and test the value of integration and licensing against complete network and transfer costs.
  • Analytics-heavy, Kubernetes-centric or selected AI/ML workload? Make Google Cloud the first candidate and validate BigQuery, Dataflow, GKE, Vertex AI, accelerator availability and egress with your data volumes.
  • Broad, unusual or highly customized infrastructure requirements? Make AWS the first candidate because of its catalog and ecosystem, then control complexity with a constrained landing zone and explicit service standards.
  • Strict geographic or sovereign requirement? Start with the providers and Regions that can legally and operationally satisfy it; price only the survivors.
  • Uncertain future direction? Keep data formats, interfaces, deployment definitions and migration tests portable where the expected exit value exceeds the extra engineering cost.

No published statistic supports a provider ranking independent of workload. The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: choose the cloud whose geography, economics, platform strengths and organizational fit best match this system, and verify that choice with measured operations and a tested way out.
