AWS Pricing Explained: Models, Tiers, Free Credits and Service Costs

AWS pricing is primarily pay-as-you-go, but the amount you pay depends on the service, Region, usage unit, pricing tier, account plan, taxes, data transfer and any commitments or credits. On-Demand is the flexible baseline; Reservations and Savings Plans reduce eligible rates in exchange for commitment; Spot uses interruptible spare EC2 capacity. Use the public calculator for a clean On-Demand workload estimate and the in-console calculator when your AWS account history, discounts or commitments matter.

How AWS pricing works

AWS prices services independently rather than applying one universal cloud rate card. You select the services and capacity you need, then pay for the measured units those services consume. Depending on the product, that unit may be compute time, requests, stored data, provisioned capacity, database instance hours, data transfer or another service-specific dimension.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

AWS describes the model as pay-as-you-go: standard consumption does not require a long-term contract, and you can stop paying for capacity after you stop using it. The same service can also offer flat-rate features, commitment discounts or lower unit prices at higher volumes. Always open the pricing page for the particular service, Region and configuration before treating a quoted rate as applicable to your workload.

Why one AWS hourly price is never universal

  • Region and, where relevant, Availability Zone can change the rate.
  • Operating system, tenancy, instance family, storage class and provisioned performance can change the billable amount.
  • Requests, storage, compute hours and data transfer are separate dimensions, often with different tiers.
  • Taxes, currency, account discounts, credits and organization-level benefit sharing affect the final invoice.

AWS pricing models compared

Model Commitment and payment Flexibility Best fit Important limitation
On-Demand No long-term commitment or required upfront payment in the general model; pay as capacity is used. Highest flexibility for changing Regions, sizes and schedules. New, variable or uncertain workloads. Usually the baseline, undiscounted rate.
Savings Plans Commit to a consistent dollar-per-hour usage amount for one or three years. All Upfront, Partial Upfront and No Upfront payment options are available. Depends on plan type. Compute Savings Plans cover EC2, Fargate and Lambda; other plans have narrower eligibility. Steady usage where the team can forecast a minimum spend. You continue to owe the commitment even if eligible usage falls below it.
Reservations Reserve eligible capacity or usage for a defined term, with payment options that vary by service. Discount coverage depends on service, Region, term and configuration. Predictable workloads that can remain on eligible resources. Changing the workload can leave part of the reservation unused.
Spot Request spare EC2 capacity with no long-term commitment. Capacity and price can change; instances can be interrupted. Fault-tolerant, restartable, batch or flexible workloads. Not appropriate for stateful or interruption-sensitive work without a recovery design.
Flat-rate or service-specific pricing Recurring, per-unit or other dimensions set by the individual service. Varies by product. Features whose billing does not map cleanly to a generic compute-hour model. There is no cross-service formula; consult the product pricing page.

On-Demand

On-Demand is the comparison point for most estimates. You pay for capacity as you use it, without committing to a one- or three-year term. It is useful while a system is being tested, when demand is seasonal, or when a migration may change the required architecture. Its trade-off is that you give up the lower eligible rates available through commitments.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Savings Plans

A Savings Plan exchanges a commitment to a consistent usage amount, measured in dollars per hour, for lower rates on eligible usage over one or three years. A Compute Savings Plan can apply across EC2, Fargate and Lambda, while EC2 Instance Savings Plans and plans for services such as SageMaker AI or databases have their own eligibility rules. The commitment amount is not the same as a promise to run one particular instance forever; the flexibility depends on the plan selected.

Before buying, review Cost Explorer recommendations, utilization and coverage reports. Compare the proposed commitment with a conservative minimum workload rather than a peak forecast. Payment can be All Upfront, Partial Upfront or No Upfront, so model both cash timing and the effective hourly rate.

Reservations

Reservations discount eligible capacity or usage for a specified service. AWS’s pricing whitepaper describes maximum discounts of up to 75% versus On-Demand, but that is not a guaranteed saving for every customer. The result depends on term length, payment option, Region, service, utilization and whether your configuration remains eligible. A reservation that is only partly used can cost more than staying flexible.

Spot

Spot uses spare EC2 capacity and can offer discounts of up to 90% versus On-Demand, according to AWS’s whitepaper. The maximum is not guaranteed, and the capacity can be interrupted. Design around interruption with checkpointing, queues, multiple instance types or Regions, and automatic replacement. Spot is generally suited to work that can pause, retry or move; it is a poor default for a single stateful server that must remain available.

How AWS pricing tiers and billing dimensions work

AWS has no single tier schedule shared by every service. A service may reduce the unit price after a monthly storage threshold, request volume or data-processing band, while another service may use a completely different ladder or no volume discount at all. Thresholds, units, Regions and eligible account scopes are defined on each service’s pricing page.

Identify the billable dimension before calculating cost. For example, an estimate might need instance-hours for compute, gigabyte-months for storage, request counts for an API, provisioned capacity for a database, and outbound data transfer for traffic leaving a Region. Combining these dimensions into one “hourly AWS price” hides the main cost drivers.

Why a tiered estimate can differ from a simple rate calculation

For incremental usage, the calculator may use the prior month’s usage tier as a starting assumption. That means a modeled unit price can differ from multiplying the entire workload by the first published tier. Consolidated billing can also aggregate eligible usage across accounts, allowing higher-volume tiers to apply to organization usage rather than to one account in isolation.

Free Tier, credits and account plans

New AWS accounts receive USD 100 in credits and may earn up to an additional USD 100 through qualifying activities. AWS also documents more than 30 services with always-free monthly usage limits. These offers are conditional, not a blanket waiver for every service or every Region.

Free account plan

The Free account plan is intended for experimentation and proof-of-concept work. AWS says it ends after six months or when the available credits are fully used, whichever comes first; the account then closes unless you upgrade. Check the account’s remaining credit balance and each service’s monthly limit before starting a workload that could continue running unattended.

Paid account plan

The Paid account plan provides access to all services and applies standard pay-as-you-go rates after credits are consumed or whenever a credit does not cover the charge. Free usage can depend on account age, plan, Region, service, usage limit and promotional eligibility, so verify those conditions in the current Free Tier documentation.

The public calculator generally excludes Free Tier treatment unless an estimate explicitly calls it out. A workload that appears to cost zero in a personal experiment can therefore produce a charge when moved to another account, Region or usage level.

Build an estimate that someone else can audit

  1. Open the calculator and organize the estimate by cost center, service or Region.
  2. Choose the exact Region, operating system, tenancy, instance or storage class and performance settings.
  3. Enter expected hours, requests, stored volume, provisioned capacity and data transfer separately.
  4. Record growth assumptions, discounts, credits and the portion covered by commitments.
  5. Label each result as a public rate, an after-discount rate or an organization-specific effective rate.
  6. Save the assumptions beside the estimate so a later change can be traced to a particular input.

The calculator FAQ uses 730 hours for a typical month, calculated as 365 days multiplied by 24 and divided by 12. It does not account for leap years, so a monthly result is a planning convention rather than an invoice prediction.

Why your estimate differs from the AWS bill

  • Usage changed: actual instance uptime, requests, storage growth or data transfer exceeded the forecast.
  • Different dimensions were omitted: a compute estimate may not include storage requests, snapshots, load balancing, monitoring or inter-Region transfer.
  • Region or configuration changed: a deployment used another Region, Availability Zone, operating system, tenancy or storage class.
  • Tier assumptions changed: the calculator modeled a prior-month tier or consolidated usage that differs from standalone consumption.
  • Credits or Free Tier did not apply: account age, plan, Region, service limit or promotional eligibility was different.
  • Commitments were misapplied: a reservation or Savings Plan covered less usage than expected, or organization sharing rules allocated benefits differently.
  • Taxes were added: calculator estimates exclude taxes.

Reconcile the result by comparing the estimate’s assumptions with the detailed billing dimensions for the same dates. Then check commitment utilization, coverage reports, credit eligibility and the payer-account configuration used for consolidated billing.

Commitments and consolidated billing across accounts

AWS Organizations can combine usage across accounts for volume pricing and share eligible Reserved Instance and Savings Plans benefits. The way those benefits are applied depends on consolidated-billing rules and the organization’s payer-account configuration. Finance and platform teams should review coverage and utilization reports rather than assuming that a purchase in one account automatically lowers every other account’s bill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a commitment decision, separate three questions: how much usage is reliably present, which services and Regions can use the benefit, and whether the organization can keep that usage through the term. A lower effective rate is valuable only when the covered usage remains eligible and utilized.

A practical AWS cost-planning workflow

Start with a service-level inventory

List every service, Region and environment, then write down its billable unit. Include production, development, backups, snapshots, monitoring, support-related usage and data movement. This prevents a compute-only estimate from being mistaken for a complete architecture cost.

Create a flexible baseline

Use the public calculator with On-Demand rates and conservative hours, requests and data volumes. Keep the result as the cost of operating without commitments; it is the clearest baseline for an uncertain workload.

Apply discounts only after measuring usage

Once several months of actual usage exist, use the in-console calculator and Cost Explorer recommendations to test Savings Plans or Reservations. Compare expected utilization, cash timing and the cost of unused commitment, not just the headline discount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model low-cost interruption-tolerant capacity separately

If a workload can retry or pause, create a Spot scenario with interruption handling and a fallback capacity plan. Do not blend Spot assumptions into the availability-critical baseline, because the operational design and risk are different.

Review the estimate before deployment and after the first bill

Recheck volatile rates and Free Tier terms on the current service pricing page. After launch, compare forecast and actual usage by Region, service and dimension, then update the estimate with measured values. This feedback loop catches omitted data transfer, tier changes and idle resources before they become recurring charges.

Key decisions at a glance

  • Choose On-Demand when flexibility and uncertainty matter more than the lowest possible unit rate.
  • Choose a Savings Plan when a minimum dollar-per-hour usage level is dependable and the plan’s eligible services match your architecture.
  • Choose a Reservation when the service, Region and capacity are stable enough to keep the reservation utilized.
  • Choose Spot only when interruption, replacement and retry behavior are engineered into the workload.
  • Use service pricing pages for exact dimensions and the calculator for a documented workload estimate; neither replaces reviewing the final bill.
