OBS can play the file in a scene and send the live stream to YouTube. AWS Elemental MediaPackage has a different job: it packages and originates a live stream that an upstream encoder—often AWS Elemental MediaLive in AWS’s documented architecture—has already sent to it. MediaPackage alone is not a local-MP4-to-YouTube streamer.
Choose the AWS route when you need a managed cloud media pipeline and its packaged outputs for downstream playback, and can justify configuring and paying for the extra services. If you mean an ordinary YouTube upload rather than a live broadcast, use YouTube’s normal video-upload workflow instead; the comparison below concerns a prerecorded file presented as a YouTube Live stream.

What each product does
OBS plays and sends the source
OBS is desktop production and streaming software. Add a media source to a scene, check that the file plays as intended, and configure OBS to send the stream to the ingest details for your YouTube Live event. OBS’s Media Sources documentation covers adding media to scenes. The computer running OBS and its network connection remain part of this workflow.

A MediaPackage v2 live channel is an entry point for a stream from an upstream encoder; an origin endpoint defines packaging settings for downstream requests. AWS’s documented live flow has an encoder such as MediaLive send HLS to MediaPackage, after which a player or CDN requests an output. MediaPackage supports packaging formats such as HLS and DASH; it is not the file player or live encoder in that flow. See AWS’s live-content documentation and live processing flow.

Choose based on the job
Use OBS for a simple file-to-YouTube broadcast
OBS is the more direct route when you want to play one file or a sequence locally and send it to a YouTube Live event. You avoid building an AWS packaging pipeline that does not solve a requirement you have. You still need a suitable computer, a stable connection, and correct YouTube ingest settings.
Consider MediaPackage when packaging and cloud origination matter
MediaPackage is relevant when a broader live-media design needs managed cloud origination and packaged outputs for downstream players or a CDN. In AWS’s documented RTMPS example, the path is OBS → load balancer → MediaLive → MediaPackage: MediaLive handles encoding and MediaPackage handles packaging. That is an architecture example, not a minimal recipe for sending a local video file directly to YouTube. AWS notes that the example’s resources incur charges while running. Review the AWS RTMPS example and current service and regional pricing details before adopting a similar design.

Keep live streaming separate from VOD delivery
A prerecorded source does not by itself make the workflow VOD. If you present it as a live broadcast, the source must be turned into a live stream and sent through a live ingest path. AWS describes MediaPackage VOD delivery separately, with source content residing in S3; its live path expects an upstream encoder stream. See AWS MediaPackage documentation and the supported inputs and outputs reference, which lists HLS and CMAF over HTTPS for MediaPackage v2 live inputs and describes supported codecs and endpoint formats.

Set up the OBS route carefully
- Create or open the YouTube Live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the event’s current ingest protocol, stream key, account eligibility, and any event-specific settings. Use the values shown for that event rather than relying on an old tutorial.
- Add the file in OBS. In the scene you intend to broadcast, add a Media Source and select the prerecorded file. Confirm that video and audio play, the aspect ratio is correct, and the file behaves as expected at the beginning and end. OBS documents media sources at obsproject.com/kb/media-sources.
- Configure the YouTube destination. Enter the current YouTube ingest details and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to that destination. Check the current YouTube Live Control Room instructions if labels or available settings differ in your installed OBS version.
- Match the stream settings to YouTube’s current guidance. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s official live encoder settings and your event’s requirements. There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every source and connection, so do not copy values from an unrelated setup without checking those references.
- Run a private or unlisted check where appropriate. Confirm the stream reaches YouTube, the file’s audio and picture are synchronized, and the stream has the expected framing before relying on it for a public event.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Confirm YouTube receives the feed and watch for dropped frames, connection warnings, or playback ending unexpectedly. OBS depends on the machine and network running the broadcast.
Check rights and YouTube policy before going live
Having a video file does not establish permission to broadcast its visuals, music, or other included material. Confirm that you have the rights or applicable permission for everything in the recording, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. A stream that is technically configured correctly can still face restrictions if its content violates rights or platform policies.
