You generally should not send an AWS Elemental MediaPackage playback endpoint to YouTube Live. MediaPackage is designed to receive a stream from an upstream encoder and make packaged output available to downstream players or a CDN; YouTube Live expects an encoder to send video to the ingest URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. For a playlist, use FFmpeg as the encoder and send its output directly to YouTube’s configured ingest destination. If your workflow also needs MediaPackage, treat it as a separate destination, not a documented relay to YouTube.
Why a MediaPackage endpoint is not the YouTube destination
AWS distinguishes between MediaPackage input and output. An upstream encoder sends a live content stream into a MediaPackage channel. A downstream player or CDN requests packaged content from a MediaPackage endpoint. As the AWS Elemental MediaPackage User Guide puts it, “A downstream device requests content from MediaPackage through the endpoint output URL.” That endpoint is for accessing output, not an encoder push URL for YouTube.

YouTube Live uses the opposite role: the encoder sends a stream to the server URL and stream key configured for the YouTube event. The official YouTube encoder setup instructions describe entering those values in the encoder. The reviewed AWS and YouTube documentation does not establish a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube push or relay integration. Do not paste a MediaPackage playback URL into YouTube or FFmpeg as though it were YouTube’s ingest destination.

Send an FFmpeg playlist directly to YouTube Live
The destination and protocol come from the specific YouTube stream you create. FFmpeg can serve as the encoder for your playlist workflow, but exact playlist-demuxer options and command syntax depend on the playlist files, codecs, and FFmpeg build. The official destination and protocol guidance below does not verify a one-size-fits-all FFmpeg command, so validate your input and output with a test stream rather than assuming a sample command will work unchanged.

1. Create or select the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream for the event.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values for this event rather than hard-coding credentials from another stream.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not publish it or leave it exposed in shared command history, logs, or screenshots.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say that for a scheduled stream you should wait for the encoder preview, check it, and then select Go live in Live Control Room.
2. Choose the ingest protocol
Use the protocol configured for the YouTube stream and supported by your encoder workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard RTMP path; use the current server URL shown in Live Control Room and its matching key. See YouTube’s RTMP and RTMPS ingest guidance for the current recommendation.

HLS is a separate ingest option, useful for supported cases such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. If you select HLS in Live Control Room, configure an HLS output for YouTube’s HLS ingest URL and requirements—not a MediaPackage endpoint. YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption other than HTTPS. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream and therefore has higher latency than RTMP. Refer to YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements for the applicable details.

3. Configure FFmpeg for your playlist and verify the output
Configure FFmpeg to read the playlist and media files in the form your build supports, then encode or copy streams only as appropriate for the selected YouTube ingest requirements and your source codecs. The exact input options and command cannot be prescribed reliably without knowing the playlist format, file layout, codecs, and FFmpeg version. For HLS ingest in particular, check that the generated segment and rolling-playlist behavior meets YouTube’s requirements; do not assume that any FFmpeg HLS output is automatically compliant.

- Confirm the playlist’s referenced files are accessible to the process running FFmpeg and remain available for the full stream.
- Confirm the output protocol matches the stream configuration in Live Control Room.
- Check both audio and moving video in YouTube’s encoder preview before going live. YouTube recommends testing these characteristics before the event.
- Monitor YouTube stream health during the test and address warnings before the scheduled broadcast.
If MediaPackage also belongs in the architecture
Keep MediaPackage’s ingest URL and its endpoint playback URL distinct. The upstream encoder sends a feed to MediaPackage; a player or CDN uses the MediaPackage endpoint to request its packaged output. Confirm console and API details for the MediaPackage version and AWS region/account you use, since AWS documents both the original service guide and MediaPackage v2.
If the same source must reach both MediaPackage and YouTube, plan a separate encoder output or a suitable distribution system for each destination. This is an architectural approach based on the services’ documented ingest and egress roles, not a vendor-verified MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay. Do not assume MediaPackage will forward its output to YouTube.

Troubleshooting the common setup failures
- YouTube never shows an encoder preview: Confirm that FFmpeg is using the current server URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, and that the protocol matches the stream configuration.
- YouTube is pointed at a MediaPackage URL: Replace it with YouTube’s own ingest destination. MediaPackage endpoint output URLs are for downstream playback requests.
- HLS ingest is rejected or behaves unexpectedly: Check that the output uses TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption beyond HTTPS.
- The stream has more delay than expected: HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers segments rather than a continuous stream. Select the protocol appropriate to the use case and the YouTube stream setup.
- MediaPackage receives content but YouTube does not: Treat the two as separate destinations. A MediaPackage feed does not, by itself, establish that YouTube is receiving an encoder feed.
- Playlist playback stops partway through: Check that FFmpeg can still access every referenced file and that paths and permissions remain valid. Playlist-specific behavior varies with the files and FFmpeg build.
