Use a real user-facing trigger to open the modal, verify its accessible semantics and keyboard behavior, then compare a screenshot of its intended open state against a reviewed baseline. A screenshot catches visual regressions; it does not prove that the dialog can be found, focused, or operated correctly, so pair visual checks with behavioral assertions.
Build the test around the dialog’s real user flow
For a repeatable modal regression test, keep setup, behavior checks, and visual comparison distinct. Open the dialog through the same button or link a user would activate, wait for the meaningful state to render, then capture that state. Use accessible role-and-name locators where the application supports them.

- Navigate to the relevant page using the same browser project and environment used for the approved screenshot baseline.
- Locate and activate the normal opener, such as a button named “Open settings.”
- Find the dialog by its dialog role and accessible name. Assert that it is visible and that focus has moved inside it.
- Check keyboard handling, dismissal, and focus return according to the dialog’s intended workflow.
- Capture the intended visual state with a screenshot assertion. Make the focus state intentional: a focused dialog or control may render differently from an unfocused one.

Test modal semantics, focus, and keyboard behavior
The W3C WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide describes a modal as an overlaid window where content beneath it is inert and the dialog contains its tab sequence. Its modal dialog pattern recommends a dialog role, aria-modal="true", and an accessible label provided through aria-labelledby or aria-label. W3C WAI-ARIA APG: Dialog (Modal) Pattern
- Name and visibility: Assert that the dialog is visible and discoverable by its accessible name, not only by a CSS selector.
- Initial focus: Verify that opening moves focus into an appropriate element within the dialog.
- Tab sequence: Move forward from the last tabbable control and verify focus wraps to the first; move backward from the first and verify Shift+Tab wraps to the last.
- Dismissal: Test Escape and the visible close control if the product’s interaction design supports those paths. The APG pattern expects Escape to close a modal; account for a documented application-specific workflow before asserting it.
- Focus after closing: Verify that focus returns to the invoking control unless the task flow deliberately sends the user to another destination.
- Background isolation: Check that content behind an active modal cannot be interacted with.
These are semantic and behavioral contracts, not things a pixel comparison can establish. Add them even when the screenshot looks correct.
Choose what the screenshot should cover
Use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() when the visual contract includes the whole page, such as backdrop dimming, dialog placement, or surrounding layout. Use a locator’s toHaveScreenshot() when the contract is limited to the dialog’s internal appearance. A dialog-only capture reduces unrelated page noise, but it will not cover backdrop or positioning outside the element.

Playwright Test creates a reference image on first use and compares later captures with it. Its screenshot assertion takes captures until two consecutive screenshots match, then saves the last for comparison. Treat a changed image as something to inspect, not automatically as a new correct baseline. Review the visual diff and update stored snapshots only after confirming the change is intended. Stabilize rendering without hiding real regressions
Keep the environment consistent
Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Create and run baselines in a consistent environment, including the same browser project configuration and viewport. Playwright documents these sources of rendering variation in its visual comparisons guide.
Control transient content intentionally
Playwright screenshot assertions support animation handling, caret behavior, clipping, full-page capture, masks, CSS or device scale, injected styles, and acceptable pixel or color differences. Animation handling is disabled by default for screenshot assertions. Consult the PageAssertions API and Page API for option details.

- Disable animations when transitions would otherwise make captures inconsistent.
- Use deterministic test data or frozen values for dynamic content that matters to users.
- Mask only narrow, genuinely variable regions whose appearance is outside the visual contract. A mask hides defects in those pixels, so assert important masked text or state separately.
- Use a stylesheet to suppress a known volatile region only when that does not conceal meaningful layout behavior.
- Choose a difference threshold according to the team’s review policy and a stable environment, not as a way to dismiss unexplained changes.
Capture useful states separately when they represent distinct visual contracts—for example, the initial open state, a validation error, or a confirmation state.
Understand visual-test trade-offs

Troubleshoot common modal screenshot failures
Snapshots differ across machines or CI runs
First align operating system, browser version, settings, viewport, and headless configuration with the baseline environment. Check whether hardware or power conditions differ, since Playwright lists those among possible rendering variables. Do not mask broad regions simply to make cross-environment diffs disappear.
The first run creates a snapshot instead of reporting a mismatch
That is the baseline-creation workflow: inspect the new reference image, then retain it as the expected state only if it represents the intended UI. Subsequent runs perform the comparison.

The screenshot catches animation or blinking content
Disable animations for the assertion or make the application’s test data deterministic. For content that is truly irrelevant and inherently variable, apply a narrow mask and keep separate assertions for any meaningful text or state it would hide.
The dialog-only screenshot misses a placement or backdrop defect
Change the visual contract to a page-level screenshot or add a separate page-level assertion. An element screenshot cannot show surrounding overlay dimming or the dialog’s relationship to the page.

Review the actual diff before updating. Playwright documents --update-snapshots for updating references, but an update should record an intended UI change, not silence an unexplained regression.
