For most Indian devotional channels sending one live program to YouTube, OBS is the practical starting point. OBS produces and encodes the stream; AWS Elemental MediaPackage packages and originates streams arriving from an upstream encoder. They do different jobs, so MediaPackage is not a direct OBS replacement. Add it only if you have a separate packaging or origin-delivery requirement.
OBS and MediaPackage do different jobs
| Question | OBS Studio | AWS Elemental MediaPackage |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Local software for producing and encoding a livestream. YouTube lists OBS as an open-source encoder available at no charge. YouTube’s encoder guide | A cloud service that receives streams from upstream encoders and packages content for delivery. A MediaPackage channel is the entry point for those streams; origin endpoints define packaging settings. AWS MediaPackage live delivery documentation |
| Likely place in a single-destination YouTube workflow | Compose the program and send the encoded livestream toward YouTube. | Use only when you need an additional packaging or origin-delivery layer; the title alone does not establish that need. |
| Input/protocol consideration | YouTube supports encoder-based streaming. AWS’s example workflow sends OBS to MediaLive over RTMP. AWS OBS-to-MediaLive-to-MediaPackage example | MediaPackage v2 lists HLS and CMAF live inputs pushed over HTTPS, with at least one video track. Supported codecs depend on input and output type. AWS supported inputs and outputs |
| Cost shape | The software is listed by YouTube as free and open source; the computer and internet connection are separate costs. | Usage-based charges apply to live ingest and originated or packaged data. An estimate needs the AWS region and actual workload assumptions. AWS MediaPackage pricing |
| Setup burden | Smaller starting setup for producing and sending one stream. | Requires configuring channels and endpoints; AWS’s example also includes MediaLive and redundancy-related inputs. |
When OBS alone is the better fit
Choose OBS as the encoder when your goal is to assemble scenes or audio and publish one stream to your YouTube channel. YouTube describes encoder streaming as an option for external audio/video hardware and more advanced production, and lists OBS as an encoder. You do not need MediaPackage merely because the stream is live, devotional, or based in India.

Before relying on a new channel’s first broadcast, account for YouTube’s notice that enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. That is an enablement window, not an estimate of stream performance. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen MediaPackage may belong in the workflow
MediaPackage is relevant when your delivery design needs a separate origin and packaging service beyond sending one encoder output to YouTube. It receives a stream from an upstream encoder and provides configured output packaging. Decide based on that concrete infrastructure need, rather than treating it as another desktop production application.

Do not assume a direct OBS-to-MediaPackage connection
MediaPackage v2’s documented live inputs are HLS and CMAF pushed over HTTPS, and an input must include at least one video track. This is not documentation of generic RTMP ingest, so do not assume that ordinary OBS output can be pasted into MediaPackage unchanged. Check the exact input type and supported codec against the chosen output before designing the connection. AWS supported inputs and outputs
AWS’s OBS example uses MediaLive in between
AWS’s published example routes OBS to MediaLive over RTMP, then MediaLive sends HLS to MediaPackage. The guide says to start the MediaLive channel before starting OBS for that example. It dates from 2018, so treat it as an illustration of the architecture and its start order, not a guarantee that every console screen or step matches today’s interface. What Indian devotional creators should check
- Location is not a special technical requirement by itself. The documented sources do not establish an India-specific MediaPackage setting or a devotional-content-specific streaming requirement.
- Verify the AWS region and bill for your actual design. MediaPackage live charges are based on ingested video data and originated or packaged content measured in GB. Your estimate depends on region, duration, and data/output assumptions; there is no established India-specific monthly total here. AWS MediaPackage pricing
- Check your own upload path. These product documents do not establish the reliability or capacity of your home or studio connection. OBS running locally depends on that setup to send the stream; a cloud packaging layer does not by itself prove that the source connection is reliable.
- Do not add advanced requirements without a reason. HDR, redundancy, DRM, multiple delivery formats, and continuous 24/7 operation are optional design choices, not needs established for every devotional broadcast.
- Keep rights and platform rules in view. Before streaming devotional recordings, confirm that you have permission to use the audio and video and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies. A religious or devotional subject does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast a recording.
HDR is a separate case
YouTube’s HDR guidance names OBS and AWS Elemental Live among compatible software encoder choices for HLS-based HDR workflows, and says YouTube HDR uses HEVC with RTMP(S) or HLS. This is specific to HDR; it is not a reason by itself to add MediaPackage to a standard devotional stream. YouTube HDR live-streaming guidance

OBS is available at no charge according to YouTube, although you still provide the computer and connectivity. MediaPackage has usage-based live packaging charges; AWS’s pricing model means a useful estimate must use your selected region and stream duration/data assumptions. The available information does not establish a single India-specific monthly figure. For a single YouTube destination without a separate packaging need, adding MediaLive and MediaPackage brings extra configuration and usage costs that the use case may not justify.

Troubleshooting workflow mismatches
OBS output will not enter MediaPackage
Likely cause: the workflow assumes MediaPackage v2 accepts a generic RTMP encoder feed. Fix: verify whether the configured MediaPackage input is HLS or CMAF over HTTPS and includes a video track. If following AWS’s published example, use its OBS-to-MediaLive-to-MediaPackage topology rather than treating OBS and MediaPackage as interchangeable endpoints.
The AWS example does not match the current console
Likely cause: the referenced OBS-to-MediaLive-to-MediaPackage walkthrough is from 2018. Fix: use it to understand the service roles and example start order, then consult current AWS documentation for the current setup and region-specific availability.
