Use IMGKit, a Python wrapper, to call the separate wkhtmltoimage executable. Install both components, then set the output format to PNG:

IMGKit does not include the rendering engine. Install the Python package and the wkhtmltoimage executable separately. The executable is often distributed with the wkhtmltopdf package.

pip install imgkit. - Install a build that provides
wkhtmltoimagefor your operating system. - Check that the executable is available on
PATHby runningwkhtmltoimage --versionin a terminal.
IMGKit’s documented usage and setup details are in its project documentation. The renderer is a command-line tool based on Qt WebKit, not a current Chromium- or Firefox-based browser; do not assume modern browser rendering fidelity. See the wkhtmltopdf project.

Capture a URL as a PNG file
Pass an explicit URL scheme, a destination ending in .png, and the format option:

)The function writes the rendered image to the named file. IMGKit also provides from_file and from_string for rendering local HTML files or an HTML string instead of fetching a URL.
Return PNG bytes instead of writing a file
Pass False as the output argument to receive the rendered image data. This is useful when another Python component will upload or process the screenshot without an intermediate file.

Point IMGKit to a specific binary
If the executable is installed but is not on the process PATH, provide its location explicitly:

Control the viewport, JavaScript, and page timing
IMGKit option names omit the command-line -- prefix. For example, format corresponds to --format. The wkhtmltoimage manual documents controls for viewport width and height, JavaScript enablement, JavaScript delay, image loading, crop dimensions, local-file access, and load-error handling. A typical options dictionary can be adjusted as follows:

imgkit.from_url("https://example.com", "page.png", options=options)Choose values based on the page and environment rather than treating them as universal defaults. The manual says screen height is calculated from page content by default; width acts as a guide unless smart width is disabled. Its option reference is available in the wkhtmltoimage manual.

Pass repeated cookies or headers
For pages that require authentication, IMGKit accepts repeated options such as cookies and custom headers as lists or tuples. Supply only credentials your application is authorized to use, and avoid hard-coding secrets in source code or logs. Confirm that your installed renderer build supports the option you need.

Server behavior depends on the operating system and the particular wkhtmltoimage build. IMGKit notes that some headless setups need Xvfb and supports an xvfb option for those environments. Some Debian or Ubuntu repository builds also omit Qt patches and have reduced functionality compared with patched static binaries. If an option behaves unexpectedly on Linux, identify the installed build before changing your Python code.
Troubleshooting
“No wkhtmltoimage executable found”
Install the executable if it is missing, or make sure the running Python process can find it on PATH. If it is installed elsewhere, configure it with imgkit.config(wkhtmltoimage="/path/to/wkhtmltoimage").

It fails only on a headless server
Some server configurations require Xvfb. Follow IMGKit’s documented setup for the environment and enable the wrapper’s xvfb option where appropriate. A desktop machine working successfully does not prove the server has the same display dependencies.
Features are missing or behave differently on Linux
Check which wkhtmltoimage package and build are installed. IMGKit warns that some distribution-provided builds lack Qt patches and have reduced functionality. A Python option cannot restore functionality absent from the executable.
The conversion exits with an error or crashes
IMGKit recommends running the generated command directly to inspect the underlying renderer error; its documentation notes that some versions may fail with segmentation faults. Confirm the URL is reachable from the same machine, then isolate renderer options and test the executable independently.

The PNG is blank, incomplete, or missing dynamic content
Rendering can depend on viewport dimensions, JavaScript execution, page load timing, remote assets, and the renderer build. Check that JavaScript is enabled if the page needs it, allow an appropriate JavaScript delay, and verify that images and other resources load in the server environment. The cited documentation does not establish compatibility with every modern site.

Yes. Use IMGKit’s from_file method, or from_string when you already have the HTML content.
Does wkhtmltoimage use the same engine as a modern browser?
No. The project describes it as using the Qt WebKit rendering engine, so modern-browser fidelity is not established.
