Enable DigitalOcean Monitoring
DigitalOcean Monitoring is an opt-in service. The metrics agent is not installed by default on every existing Droplet. DigitalOcean’s Monitoring quickstart, last verified October 1, 2026, documents two ways to enable it:

When the installation finishes, check the service:
systemctl status do-agent
Look for Active: active (running). If the command reports that the service is inactive or failed, check the installation output and service status before relying on the graphs.
Open the graphs
- In the DigitalOcean Control Panel, open the Droplet that runs your stream.
- Select Insights.
- Review CPU, memory, load average, disk, and bandwidth graphs. Installing the agent enables memory and load-average graphs, enhanced metrics, and alerting; default Droplet graphs also include public bandwidth and disk I/O or disk usage, as described in DigitalOcean’s Droplet graphs documentation.
Read CPU utilization and load average together
DigitalOcean’s CPU graph shows total utilization across the Droplet, and its CPU alerts track total CPU rather than separating system time from user time. Keep that scope in mind when comparing the panel with local commands: some tools report 100% per CPU core, so a multi-vCPU machine can show more than 100% locally while DigitalOcean represents total capacity on a 100% scale. DigitalOcean explains these distinctions in its metrics definitions.
Load average answers a different question: roughly how many processes are running or waiting for CPU time. It is not normalized to the Droplet’s vCPU count, so compare the value with the number of vCPUs. DigitalOcean’s example: a load average of 2 is above capacity on a one-vCPU Droplet, but is half the available CPU capacity on a four-vCPU Droplet.

- A short spike in the 1- or 5-minute average may reflect a brief workload burst.
- A 15-minute load average that remains above the vCPU count is a stronger sign of sustained CPU pressure than a momentary peak.
- Compare the graphs across representative stream activity, such as a busy scene or a playlist change, rather than judging a Droplet from a quiet moment alone.
There is no single CPU percentage or load-average threshold that is correct for every stream. Interpret trends alongside the Droplet’s vCPU count and the workload you actually run.
Interpret memory without mistaking cache for a problem
Linux can use otherwise-unused RAM for disk cache and reclaim that cache when applications need memory. DigitalOcean calculates its memory-used metric from /proc/meminfo, subtracting free and cached memory from total. As a result, the percentage shown by DigitalOcean may not match what top or htop appears to show if the local utility counts cache differently. See DigitalOcean’s memory metric explanation.
Look for a sustained trend in memory use and available or reclaimable memory, not cache alone. A local “used” figure is not necessarily evidence that the Droplet is running out of RAM.

Set alerts around your normal workload
After the agent is installed, DigitalOcean lets you create resource alert policies. Its documented categories include CPU, load average, memory, disk, and bandwidth. Choose thresholds that fit your Droplet and test them against normal stream behavior; DigitalOcean does not prescribe one threshold for every workload. The Monitoring quickstart describes setting alerts after installation.
An alert is a prompt to investigate, not proof that the stream has failed. Check whether the condition persists, whether other resource graphs changed at the same time, and what YouTube reports about the incoming stream.
Check YouTube’s stream health separately
A Droplet can have comfortable CPU and memory graphs while the stream sent to YouTube is unstable, incorrectly configured, or constrained by outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and motion similar to the actual event, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its live encoder settings and streaming tips cover ingestion requirements and network guidance.

Confirm encoder and bitrate settings
YouTube’s published live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 encoding, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current table for the format you send.
For example, YouTube’s English-language table available in 2026 recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube ingestion bitrate recommendations, not rules for how much CPU or RAM a Droplet needs.

YouTube advises ensuring that available upload bandwidth can carry the outgoing stream and leaving 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Account for both primary and backup bitrate where applicable, and check the Droplet’s outbound speed rather than assuming that a low CPU graph means the network path is adequate.

Know what the agent can and cannot show
do-agent provides system-level metrics; it is not an application performance monitor. DigitalOcean says the agent runs as an unprivileged user, reads system metrics from /proc, and uses outbound connections only: port 80 to contact its metadata service for an authentication token and port 443 to send encrypted metrics. Its documentation says it does not open ports or interfere with existing services; see Monitoring features.
If you need application-level metrics, DigitalOcean points to separate APM tooling. The agent’s metrics cannot be exported directly from the service; for different visualizations or custom dashboards, DigitalOcean suggests an external tool such as Grafana. See its Monitoring limits page, last verified July 13, 2026.
Troubleshoot common monitoring and streaming symptoms
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No memory or load-average graph appears | Confirm the metrics agent is installed and systemctl status do-agent shows Active: active (running). |
If the service is not active, inspect its status and installation output, then install or repair the agent using DigitalOcean’s documented procedure. |
| DigitalOcean CPU appears lower than a local tool | Check whether the local tool reports 100% per core while the panel shows aggregate utilization. | Compare like with like and use load average relative to the Droplet’s vCPU count to assess sustained pressure. |
| Local memory looks high but the panel does not | Check whether the local utility counts Linux disk cache as used memory. | Assess available or reclaimable memory and the trend over time rather than reacting to cache alone. |
| CPU and RAM look healthy, but YouTube reports stream problems | Review YouTube’s stream-health messages, encoder configuration, keyframe interval, bitrate, and outbound bandwidth. | Run a representative preflight test and confirm that the available upload bandwidth includes YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Host graphs are insufficient for diagnosing the streaming application | Determine whether you need application-level metrics, metric export, or custom visualizations. | Use separate APM tooling for application metrics or an external dashboard tool such as Grafana for custom visualization. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming uploaded videos to YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a Droplet-monitoring tool: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
