MediaPackage’s HLS settings control how AWS packages a live feed; they do not send that feed to YouTube. For a 24/7 YouTube channel, align MediaPackage’s output segments with its input cadence, choose a rolling manifest window for the playback lookback you need, and configure a separate HLS-capable sender with YouTube’s HLS ingestion URL and stream key. The right field names and limits depend on whether you use classic MediaPackage or MediaPackage v2, so verify them against your deployed endpoint type before going live.
Understand the path from MediaPackage to YouTube
Think of the system as separate handoffs: a source supplies media to AWS; MediaPackage packages it into HLS; a sending component reads that HLS output and sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup describes an encoder configured with YouTube’s HTTPS ingestion URL and an HLS stream key. A MediaPackage origin endpoint or viewer-playback URL is not, by itself, YouTube’s ingest destination. AWS-supported output codecs also do not prove that every sender and YouTube ingest combination is compatible. See AWS MediaPackage v2 endpoint guidance, YouTube’s HLS setup instructions and AWS’s live codec and input support.

Choose the MediaPackage generation first
The classic MediaPackage user guide describes HLS packager settings. MediaPackage v2 uses origin endpoint, HLS manifest and segment settings. Their fields and limits are not interchangeable; identify the actual service generation and endpoint type in your AWS account, then use the corresponding console or API documentation.
| Configuration area | Classic MediaPackage | MediaPackage v2 |
|---|---|---|
| HLS configuration reference | Packager settings fields in the classic user guide | Origin endpoint and HLS manifest settings in the v2 user guide |
| Documented manifest-window maximum | Not established in the cited classic guide result; check the selected service’s current documentation | 900 seconds (15 minutes), per the v2 user guide checked in 2026 |
| HLS manifest naming | Use the fields for the selected classic endpoint | The manifest name is appended to the endpoint path; MediaPackage adds an extension such as .m3u8, and the manifest name can override the origin endpoint name |

Set segment duration and manifest behavior
Align output segments with the input cadence
Set the HLS output segment duration to match the input segment duration, or to a multiple of it. AWS says MediaPackage rounds a mismatched output duration to the nearest multiple of the input segment duration. That can make the actual segment cadence differ from the number you entered, so coordinate the value with the encoder or upstream source and inspect the resulting manifest and playback. There is no single segment duration established here as a universal YouTube requirement. AWS documents the behavior for both classic MediaPackage and MediaPackage v2.
Set a rolling lookback, not a 24-hour manifest
The playlist or manifest window controls how much recent content is listed for playback. It does not set how long the channel runs. In MediaPackage v2, AWS documents a maximum manifest window of 900 seconds (15 minutes). Set the window to the recent playback lookback your viewers and sender need; do not try to use it as a control for the channel’s total runtime. The cited classic documentation result does not establish the same numeric maximum for classic MediaPackage.

Use program date/time and startover only when needed
MediaPackage v2 can insert EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIME tags to associate segments with wall-clock time, which can support timeline seeking or time display. This is optional for ordinary HLS; AWS’s v2 guide says it is required for low-latency HLS. The separate v2 startover window is for time-shifted or catch-up viewing, not the rolling manifest window; its documented maximum is 1,209,600 seconds (14 days). Configure it only if viewers need startover. Confirm all these settings in the v2 endpoint guide.

Configure YouTube ingestion on the sender
- Select the intended YouTube ingest protocol. YouTube generally recommends RTMPS for encoder workflows and also documents HLS ingestion. Use HLS only if the component sending the stream supports the required HLS workflow and it matches your codec and operational needs. MediaPackage packaging does not select or configure YouTube’s protocol. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Create or select a YouTube stream configured for HLS. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup instructions to obtain the HTTPS stream URL and HLS stream key. Treat the key as a credential; do not publish it in a manifest, log, screenshot or public configuration. For managing stream URLs and keys, see YouTube’s live stream settings help.
- Configure the actual sending component. Give the HLS-capable encoder or sender the YouTube URL and key, and configure it to read the appropriate MediaPackage HLS output if that is your source. The sender must bridge the packaged playback feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint; do not paste the MediaPackage playback URL into YouTube as though it were an ingest URL.
- Check the complete codec path. AWS lists H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio among supported live output combinations. That is an AWS packaging capability, not an end-to-end guarantee for the sender and chosen YouTube ingest protocol. Confirm the supported video/audio formats for the entire chain before production.
- Apply YouTube’s encoder guidance at the sending end. YouTube’s settings page provides bitrate guidance by codec and resolution and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds, for the described encoder settings. Select the relevant current values for the chosen resolution, codec and ingest method rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Validate them with the sender’s documentation and YouTube’s stream health.
Test the 24/7 feed and plan its lifecycle
- Start with a representative test. Include sustained motion and audio, not just a static image. Verify that the source reaches MediaPackage, that the manifest and segments update, and that the sender can read them and reach YouTube.
- Confirm the YouTube side is receiving a healthy stream. Start with an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test event if that suits your workflow, check the preview and stream health messages, and correct warnings before relying on the feed. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; see its encoder settings guide.
- Observe the chain over time. Check for gaps, stale manifests, audio loss, sender reconnects and changes in YouTube health. A valid MediaPackage manifest alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a playable live feed.
- Decide how events and archives will work. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish one uninterrupted archive guarantee for streams longer than 12 hours. For a 24/7 channel, decide whether the operation needs scheduled events, restarts or another archive workflow, and verify current YouTube behavior for that setup. See YouTube’s encoder-based live stream guide.
- Check content rights and channel obligations. Use material you have the rights to stream and follow YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. Repeating a recording does not itself grant permission to use its music, footage or other content, or establish that it qualifies for monetization. Review the rules that apply to your channel and content before making the feed continuous.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming video | Ingest handoff | Confirm the sender—not just MediaPackage—has YouTube’s HLS URL and HLS stream key, is using the selected protocol, and can reach the endpoint. |
| The MediaPackage manifest loads but the YouTube stream is unhealthy | Sender, codec or protocol compatibility | Check the sender’s ability to pull the MediaPackage output and push to YouTube, then verify codec, audio format and YouTube’s current encoder settings for that ingest path. |
| Segments are irregular or playback has gaps | Input/output cadence | Compare the configured output duration with the actual input segment duration. AWS rounds mismatches to source-aligned multiples; adjust the values together and inspect new manifests and playback. |
| Viewers cannot seek as far back as expected | Manifest window or startover configuration | Check the rolling manifest window separately from the v2 startover window. A longer continuous runtime does not automatically make older media available in the manifest. |
| Playback works in AWS but fails after changing the manifest path | HLS URL construction | For v2, verify the final endpoint path and manifest name, including the extension MediaPackage adds, and update the sender’s source URL to match. |
| The feed stops or the archive is incomplete after a long run | YouTube event and archive lifecycle | Do not assume a single uninterrupted archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. Verify the current event behavior and use an appropriate restart or archive workflow if required. |
Cost and a simpler option for prerecorded loops
A MediaPackage-to-YouTube pipeline can involve multiple AWS and sending components. The material cited here does not establish a total deployment cost; estimate the services and usage in your own AWS setup rather than inferring a price from HLS settings alone.
