Short answer: Start with a spare PC if it can handle your actual encoding or relay workload and your home power and internet are dependable. Choose a DigitalOcean Droplet if you need to move the workload off your home setup and its recurring compute and possible data-transfer costs make sense. If you want a managed cloud option rather than running your own PC or VM, StreamNeo is an alternative: it keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
First, identify what the channel will do
A 24/7 YouTube channel can mean different technical workloads. You may be encoding a live source continuously, generating a scene with overlays, or replaying pre-recorded videos. Encoding and transcoding can demand substantial CPU or supported hardware-encoder capacity; forwarding an already-encoded feed may need much less. Do not choose a PC or Droplet based on the phrase “24/7 stream” alone.

YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a format suitable for streaming, and its setup uses a stream URL and stream key. Treat that key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s encoder setup and eligibility guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Live encoding: The machine must process the source, including any overlays and audio, into the stream you send to YouTube.
- Pre-encoded replay or relay: The source is already encoded. Test the actual playback or relay software before assuming it needs the same CPU capacity as live encoding.
- Animated scenes or frequent changes: Treat this as an encoding workload and test with the real motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use.
The official sources cited here do not establish a universal minimum PC specification or a DigitalOcean configuration that will work for every 24/7 channel. A specific recommendation depends on the workload, bitrate, and hardware.

At a glance: StreamNeo, a spare PC, or a Droplet
| Option | Where it runs | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. StreamNeo | StreamNeo’s cloud service | Keeping uploaded videos looping as a live YouTube stream without maintaining your own PC or VM. | Paid per slot after the one free day; the service plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only. |
| 2. Spare PC | Your computer and home internet connection | You already own suitable hardware and a representative test shows enough encoding headroom and reliable upload. | You remain dependent on the PC, home power, router, and ISP; account for electricity and recovery work. |
| 3. DigitalOcean Droplet | A cloud virtual machine | You want to move the workload and network path off the home setup and are prepared to administer the VM and estimate its compute and transfer needs. | Recurring VM cost, possible outbound-transfer overage, and responsibility for process supervision and recovery. |
StreamNeo is #1 here for the specific use case of looping uploaded videos: it runs in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It does not replace an encoder for a live camera feed.
What YouTube requires and what to test
YouTube’s encoder setup page says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours. Confirm eligibility before planning a launch, rather than discovering a restriction when the system is ready.
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance gives these recommended H.264 video bitrates:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are recommendations for the named resolution and frame rate, not a guaranteed fit for every source or a statement of total network use. Audio and protocol overhead add to the traffic. See YouTube’s streaming tips and recommended encoder settings before setting up your encoder.

- Test the exact resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, overlays, and playback or encoding software you intend to use.
- On a PC or VM, monitor CPU use, dropped frames, and whether the process remains stable over a representative run.
- On a PC, check sustained upload capacity and router/ISP stability. On a Droplet, estimate monthly outbound transfer and check the plan’s allowance.
- Check YouTube’s stream preview and health indicators during testing. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
- Test how the stream recovers after stopping or restarting the encoder, losing connectivity, or rebooting the host. Arrange monitoring and alerts for an always-on service.
Using a spare PC
A spare PC can be economical when the hardware is already available and capable, but “spare” does not mean cost-free or automatically reliable. The computer must remain powered on, cooled, connected, and available to the streaming workload.
Check workload capacity before committing
Run the encoder or relay with the real stream settings. For live encoding, look for sustained CPU headroom or confirm that the encoder can use hardware acceleration supported by your PC and software. Include the overlays, audio processing, and any other tasks that will run alongside it. The cited YouTube guidance does not give a universal minimum CPU or PC specification.
Check the home network and operating conditions
- Use a wired connection if practical, and test upload stability over time rather than relying only on a single speed-test result.
- Make sure the available sustained upload can carry the selected stream plus audio and protocol overhead.
- Consider power interruptions, router or ISP outages, operating-system restarts, cooling, and whether the PC will be used for other tasks.
- Calculate electricity use if the computer will run continuously. A PC you already own still has an operating cost.
Protect the stream key and plan recovery
Enter the YouTube stream URL and key into the encoder configuration, and keep the key private. Decide how the encoder will restart after a crash or reboot, and how you will learn that the stream has stopped. A computer in your home remains exposed to local power, device, router, and ISP failures.

Using a DigitalOcean Droplet
A Droplet moves the VM and its network connection into DigitalOcean’s cloud, away from your home PC and connection. It does not make the stream automatically uninterrupted: you still need to configure and supervise the encoder or relay, protect the stream key, monitor stream health, and arrange restart and recovery behavior.

Choose based on measured workload, not the entry price
DigitalOcean’s current Droplet pricing page lists Basic Droplets starting at $4 per month. The listed 512 MiB, 1-vCPU Basic plan includes 500 GiB of outbound transfer. Those figures are specific to that plan and pricing page, not a recommendation that it can encode or relay your stream. Plan price and included resources vary. Check the live details at DigitalOcean Droplet Pricing.
DigitalOcean describes shared CPU Droplets as having variable access to the host CPU, while dedicated CPU Droplets provide guaranteed access to their full hyper-thread. Shared CPU may suit a measured, light workload; a more demanding or consistency-sensitive encoding workload may call for dedicated CPU. Neither category should be selected without testing the actual process. See DigitalOcean’s plan guidance.
Estimate outbound transfer
A continuous stream can consume substantial data. As a planning illustration, 10 Mbps sustained for 30 days is roughly 3.24 decimal TB before audio and protocol overhead. This is arithmetic, not a guaranteed consumption figure or a bill estimate. DigitalOcean bills data in GiB, so convert units consistently before comparing an estimate with a plan allowance.
DigitalOcean’s billing documentation says outbound transfer is pooled at the team level and that additional outbound transfer costs $0.01 per GiB beyond the allowance; inbound transfer is free. Allowance and overage exposure depend on your account’s plan and usage. Check current terms at DigitalOcean’s data transfer documentation.

Keep the VM operational
- Install only the encoder or relay software needed for the tested workload, then confirm it survives a long representative run.
- Configure process supervision or another restart procedure appropriate to your software and operating system.
- Monitor both the VM process and YouTube stream health; a running process does not by itself prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
- Review CPU use and transfer after launch. Change the plan if measurements show the workload or traffic exceeds what you selected.
How the costs and failure risks differ
| Factor | Spare PC | DigitalOcean Droplet |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | Electricity and any backup or replacement costs; the PC may already be owned. | Monthly VM charge; DigitalOcean Basic Droplets are listed from $4/month on the cited current pricing page. |
| Network and transfer | Uses the home connection’s sustained upload capacity and stability. | Uses outbound transfer from the VM; allowance depends on plan, with documented overage billing beyond the pooled allowance. |
| Compute | Depends on the PC, encoder support, cooling, and concurrent work. | Depends on the selected plan and CPU allocation; shared CPU access can vary, while dedicated CPU provides guaranteed access to its full hyper-thread. |
| Local failure exposure | Home power, PC, router, and ISP failures can interrupt the source. | Removes those home dependencies, but does not promise end-to-end uptime or remove the need for monitoring and recovery. |
There is no evidence here for a universal break-even price or a numeric performance comparison between a particular PC and Droplet. Calculate your own electricity and backup costs, estimate transfer from the chosen bitrate and schedule, and compare those figures with the VM plan that actually passes your workload test.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose the spare PC if it is already available, a representative test shows adequate headroom, upload stays stable, and you accept the home power and network dependencies.
- Choose a Droplet if home power, hardware, or upload is the limiting factor, and remote cloud administration is worth the recurring compute and potential transfer charges. Pick a CPU plan after measuring the workload, not just by its advertised starting price.
- Choose a managed cloud loop for uploaded videos if your goal is to keep pre-recorded videos playing as a live YouTube stream without administering a PC or VM. StreamNeo is designed for that use: upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Every slot supports the quality of your upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; StreamNeo also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. After that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo also offers daily, weekly, six-month, and yearly billing; the product is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera broadcasting. Visit StreamNeo or see pricing.
