A MediaLive input security group controls which source IP ranges may push video into a MediaLive push input; it does not control MediaLive’s delivery of an output to YouTube. If an encoder cannot reach MediaLive, check the input type and the encoder’s verified public egress IP. If MediaLive cannot reach YouTube, troubleshoot the channel output and YouTube ingest settings instead.
What the input security group does—and does not do
A MediaLive input security group is an ingress allow-list for a push input: it restricts which source IP address ranges can push content to that input. AWS documents these restrictions for RTP and RTMP push inputs. AWS: Input security groups
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
YouTube delivery is a separate, output-side workflow. AWS’s YouTube example configures an HLS output group and a YouTube upload destination. If MediaLive is failing to deliver the channel output to YouTube, changing an input security group addresses the wrong connection. AWS: YouTube output workflow
Diagnose which connection is failing
Trace the stream direction before changing settings. The relevant connections are encoder-to-MediaLive ingress and MediaLive-to-YouTube output; determine which one matches the error.

| What is failing | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Encoder or upstream system cannot push to MediaLive | Input type, applicable input security group, and the encoder’s actual public source IP. |
| MediaLive channel cannot deliver its output to YouTube | Channel output group, output protocol, destination, and the ingest URL for the current YouTube event. |
| MediaLive connects to a source rather than accepting an upstream push | Confirm whether the input is a pull type; a pull input has MediaLive connect to the source, so a push-input allow-list is not the starting point. |
AWS distinguishes RTMP_PUSH from RTMP_PULL: the first accepts an upstream push, while the second has MediaLive connect to the source. Input security groups apply to push inputs, not every MediaLive input. AWS Elemental MediaLive API: Input
Fix a non-VPC RTP or RTMP push-input allow-list
- Confirm the input and its network type. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, open the relevant input and verify that it is an RTP or RTMP push input, not a pull input or a VPC input. Confirm the AWS account, Region, input, and attached input security group before editing.
- Find the encoder’s public egress IP. Use the public IP that the MediaLive service sees on the encoder’s actual network route. A device’s local or private address is not necessarily the source address presented to MediaLive. If the encoder’s traffic exits through NAT, a firewall, or another network gateway, verify the gateway’s public egress address with the network administrator or network configuration.
- Compare that address with the group’s IPv4 CIDR whitelist. MediaLive’s input security group rules use IPv4 CIDR addresses. Check that the verified public source address falls within an allowed CIDR; do not substitute a private LAN address or assume a changing ISP address is still the one in the allow-list. AWS Elemental MediaLive API: InputSecurityGroup
- Add or adjust only the required CIDR. Update the applicable group to include the verified source address, using the narrowest rule that fits the network requirement. Avoid a broad allow-all rule as a generic remedy: the group exists to restrict access to the input.
- Check the input’s edit state before saving. AWS allows endpoint fields on non-VPC RTP and RTMP push inputs to be edited and allows an input to be assigned a different input security group. If the input is attached to a channel, edit it only while that channel is idle. AWS: Editing an input
- Retry the encoder connection. After the change is in place, retry the push and check the MediaLive input and encoder logs for the resulting connection status. If it still fails, verify that the encoder is using the intended input endpoint and that the public source IP has not changed.
If the input is VPC-based
Do not try to fix a VPC input by changing MediaLive’s inputSecurityGroups property. AWS documents that VPC inputs use VPC security group IDs and are not compatible with that MediaLive input-security-group property. Check the VPC network security group and network path for the relevant VPC input instead. AWS Elemental MediaLive API: Input

If the failure is on the MediaLive-to-YouTube leg
- Inspect the channel output group and destination. Confirm that the channel is configured for the intended YouTube delivery workflow, rather than changing the input ingress allow-list.
- Verify the output protocol and ingest URL. Compare the configured destination with the current YouTube event’s ingest configuration. Use the event’s current URL and settings rather than assuming a previous event’s destination is still valid.
- Use the relevant AWS workflow as a configuration reference. AWS’s documented example for YouTube uses an HLS output group and YouTube upload destination; it is an output configuration, not an input security-group rule. AWS: YouTube output workflow
Common causes and corrective checks
- The encoder’s private IP was allow-listed. Check the actual public egress address presented to MediaLive and add the matching IPv4 CIDR.
- The source IP changed. Reconfirm the current egress IP for the encoder’s route, then update the allow-list narrowly.
- The input is RTMP_PULL rather than RTMP_PUSH. These types have opposite connection direction. Confirm the configured input type and diagnose the source connection accordingly.
- The input is VPC-based. Use VPC security group and network-path settings; MediaLive input security groups do not apply to this input type.
- The reported failure is actually YouTube output delivery. Check the MediaLive output configuration and current YouTube ingest URL, not the input’s ingress allow-list.
- The input is attached to an active channel. Wait until the channel is idle before editing the attached input.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than send a live encoder feed through MediaLive, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos.
