The amount you pay depends on the service sending the bytes, the source Region, the destination, and the network path. Internet downloads, inter-Region replication, cross-Availability-Zone traffic, S3 Transfer Acceleration, Direct Connect and CloudFront are metered differently.
Uploads from the public internet into AWS are generally free, but data leaving AWS can be billable. The safest way to budget is to map every transfer from its source to its endpoint, apply the relevant service’s current Region price, then verify the result in your Cost and Usage Report (CUR).

What “AWS egress” means on your bill
In AWS terminology, egress normally means data transfer out (DTO): bytes that leave an AWS service or Region. A browser downloading an object, a database sending a backup to another Region, or an instance replying to an internet client can all create outbound usage. AWS bills the path, not simply the fact that a workload is hosted in the cloud.
AWS states in its Data Exports documentation: “There’s no charge for data transfer from the internet to AWS.” That describes inbound internet traffic. It does not make traffic between AWS services, Regions, Availability Zones or networking products free. A packet can also incur more than one metered charge when it crosses an intermediary such as NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway or PrivateLink.

The path determines which side is charged

The same application can therefore have different egress costs depending on whether it serves users directly from EC2, through S3, from a private connection, or through CloudFront. Always identify both the source product and the endpoint before looking up a rate.
EC2 internet egress: a representative calculation
Amazon’s EC2 On-Demand pricing table for US East (Ohio) illustrates the common internet DTO pattern. After the account’s eligible free allowance is applied, the first 10 TB per month is shown at $0.09 per GB. The table then lists lower marginal rates of $0.085/GB, $0.07/GB and $0.05/GB at progressively higher volume tiers.

These figures are an example from the cited US East (Ohio) EC2 table, not a universal AWS price. AWS services and Regions can use different schedules, and the tier boundaries and currency presentation on the live page can change. Treat the rates as a way to understand the mechanism: subtract eligible free bytes, apply each marginal tier in order, and use the source Region’s table.

How to apply the shared internet allowance
AWS offers 100 GB of data transfer out to the internet per month across eligible services and Regions. It is an account-level pool, not 100 GB for every Region or every service. A workload using 60 GB from EC2 and 70 GB from S3 in the same month cannot assume both amounts are free; together they exceed the shared 100 GB allowance before service-specific rules are considered.

In a cost model, keep the units and period explicit: monthly decimal GB or TB, source Region, service, and whether the traffic is internet DTO. Apply the allowance once across the eligible pool, then apply the service’s tiered rates to the remainder.
Inter-Region transfer: billed at the source
For traffic moving from one AWS Region to another, AWS charges the source Region’s outbound leg. The destination side has no inbound inter-Region data-transfer charge. This distinction matters for replication, disaster recovery, multi-Region databases and cross-Region analytics: the receiving Region can show zero inbound transfer while the sending Region accumulates DTO.
Model each direction separately. A bidirectional database or active-active service can generate outbound bytes from both Regions, so each side may produce a charge even though each individual destination does not charge inbound transfer. Include replication frequency, compression, retries and failover traffic in the byte estimate rather than counting only the initial copy.

“Same Region” does not mean “free.” The most common surprise is cross-Availability-Zone traffic. AWS’s EC2 pricing example lists $0.01/GB in each direction for EC2-family resources communicating across Availability Zones in the same Region. A request and response can therefore create charges on both directions of the flow.

Other products can meter the path independently. NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway and PrivateLink may add processing or endpoint charges, and the underlying service can also have regional transfer rules. Trace the actual route—load balancer, NAT, firewall, endpoint, gateway and destination—not just the application diagram. Keeping chatty components in one Availability Zone can reduce transfer but may trade away resilience; spreading them across Zones improves fault tolerance while increasing cross-AZ bytes.
S3: free cases, billable cases and acceleration
Amazon S3 has its own transfer matrix. AWS lists transfer in from the internet as free, along with transfers between buckets in the same Region and transfers from S3 to AWS services in the same Region. Transfer out to Amazon CloudFront is also free on the S3-to-CloudFront leg. Direct delivery from S3 to an internet client is a billable transfer-out case under the applicable S3 Region pricing.
Do not confuse “S3 to CloudFront is free” with free web delivery. CloudFront charges for data delivered from edge locations to viewers and for HTTP requests. The free origin leg removes one component; it does not remove the edge delivery bill.
S3 Transfer Acceleration is a separate option. It moves data through CloudFront edge locations to improve long-distance upload or download performance and has its own acceleration transfer rates. Compare those rates with ordinary S3 transfer, request charges and the performance requirement before enabling it. A workload that is already close to users may gain little from acceleration while still paying the additional transfer price.

CloudFront changes the path, not the existence of a delivery charge
When CloudFront fetches from an AWS origin, AWS does not charge data transfer from that origin to CloudFront. CloudFront then meters the edge-to-viewer transfer and viewer requests under the CloudFront pricing model. The economic question becomes whether caching and edge delivery reduce the expensive origin path enough to justify CloudFront’s request and data-transfer charges.
When CloudFront is a strong fit
- Content is cacheable and requested repeatedly, so one origin fetch serves many viewers.
- Users are geographically dispersed and benefit from edge locations.
- The origin would otherwise send large files directly over internet DTO.
- You can configure cache policies, compression and invalidation deliberately.
When the result needs closer modeling
- Responses are highly dynamic or personalized and have a low cache-hit ratio.
- Request volume is very high relative to the number of bytes delivered.
- The origin performs substantial processing for every request.
- Traffic is concentrated in a geography where the applicable CloudFront rate differs from your assumption.
Compare direct service delivery and CloudFront using the same workload: source and viewer geography, monthly bytes, request count, cacheability, origin processing, and any intermediary network charges. CloudFront is a billing-path substitution, not a blanket egress exemption.
CloudFront also has a separate 1 TB monthly data-transfer-out allowance across edge locations for CloudFront usage. It is distinct from the 100 GB AWS Region-to-internet allowance, so do not combine them into a single 1.1 TB pool.
Moving off AWS: the switching-customer process
AWS says eligible customers can request free data transfer out when moving all of their data off AWS, or all data from a particular service across eligible accounts, by following its documented switching process. This is not an automatic credit and does not apply merely because a project is migrating.
- Define the migration scope: all AWS data, or all data for a particular service, and list the accounts involved.
- Estimate the bytes leaving each source Region and service, including retries and a final synchronization pass.
- Review AWS’s eligibility conditions and documented process for the switching program.
- Open a request with AWS Support before the transfer begins, providing the required account and migration details.
- Obtain confirmation of the approved treatment and retain it with the migration plan.
- Monitor the CUR during the move; do not assume a pending request has already removed charges.
If the move does not meet the program’s conditions, normal service and Region DTO pricing applies. Budget the migration as billable until AWS confirms eligibility in writing through the documented support process.
How to estimate your actual AWS egress bill
- Draw the path. For every major flow, record source service, source Region, Availability Zone, intermediary products and final destination.
- Classify direction. Separate internet inbound, internet DTO, inter-Region outbound, cross-AZ and product-specific acceleration or delivery.
- Measure bytes and requests. Use observed monthly volumes, peak behavior, replication frequency and cache-hit assumptions rather than a single average day.
- Apply allowances once. Deduct the shared 100 GB internet DTO allowance from eligible Regional traffic and model CloudFront’s separate 1 TB allowance against CloudFront usage.
- Use the current service calculator. Enter the source Region, service, destination geography, tiered volume and any NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway or PrivateLink processing.
- Validate with the CUR. Inspect usage types such as
Region-DataTransfer-Out-Bytes, regional transfer usage and product codes that distinguish CloudFront from ordinary Regional internet DTO. - Reconcile the estimate. Compare the calculator and CUR by account, Region, service and day. Investigate any difference before committing to an architecture or migration budget.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming all egress is $0.09/GB: that figure is an illustrative EC2 US East (Ohio) tier, not an AWS-wide rate.
- Counting 100 GB per Region: the allowance is shared across eligible services and Regions.
- Treating inter-Region inbound as the whole cost: the destination inbound leg is free, but the source outbound leg is charged.
- Calling CloudFront free: origin-to-CloudFront transfer is free; viewer delivery and requests remain billable.
- Ignoring Availability Zones: same-Region cross-AZ traffic can be charged, including both directions for EC2-family communication.
- Forgetting intermediaries: NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway and PrivateLink can add metered processing even when the endpoints are in one Region.
- Assuming a migration waiver: switching-customer relief requires eligibility and the AWS Support process.
- Using stale prices: AWS rates are service- and Region-specific and can change. Recheck the live pricing page and your account’s CUR before deploying or migrating.
A practical decision framework
Choose the delivery path that minimizes total cost for the workload, not the lowest single line item. Direct EC2 or S3 delivery is easier to reason about when traffic is modest and concentrated. CloudFront can reduce origin DTO for cacheable global content, while adding request and edge-delivery charges. Inter-Region replication may be essential for recovery even though it creates source-side outbound costs. A migration can qualify for AWS’s switching process, but only after AWS confirms the conditions.
For each option, compare source and destination geography, byte volume and tier thresholds, cacheability and request rate, Availability Zone placement, intermediary processing, free-tier aggregation and whether the transfer is a one-time move. This produces a defensible estimate instead of relying on a generic “AWS egress rate.”
