To capture a password-protected page, first sign in through the site’s normal login flow, then take the screenshot from that authenticated browser session. Awesome Screenshot is a reasonable one-off option if you already use it; for repeatable, controlled captures, Playwright is the clearest documented alternative. Neither a screenshot tool nor an API bypasses a login wall: the page must be accessible to the session doing the capture.

For an already accessible page, the easiest first attempt is usually the browser extension or browser’s own capture mode. For a repeated capture with precise scope and output, use Playwright. A hosted API is a separate option for pages it can reach; verify authentication and credential handling directly before considering it for private content.

Capture a page manually with Awesome Screenshot
This workflow uses the active browser session; it does not circumvent access controls. Exact labels can vary by browser and extension version. Awesome Screenshot’s help article, updated December 24, 2025, documents these full-page paths.
- Open the site in a supported browser and sign in using its normal process, including any required MFA or other verification.
- Navigate to the exact protected page. Wait until the private content you intend to capture is visibly loaded.
- Open Awesome Screenshot and choose the full-page option: in the documented Chrome/Edge-compatible flow, select Capture, then Full Page; in Safari, choose Capture Full Page; in Firefox, choose Capture Entire Page.
- Review the resulting image before saving or sharing it. Check that the intended content loaded, that the page was not clipped, and that no sensitive information appears beyond what you meant to disclose.
If you do not need an extension, Firefox’s screenshot workflow is another browser-native possibility: choose a visible-page, entire-page, or inspected-element capture mode as appropriate. Use the Firefox instructions rather than assuming other browsers expose identical controls.

Automate authenticated screenshots with Playwright
Playwright is useful when the capture must be repeated or integrated into a test. The screenshot API handles image capture; your code must separately establish an authorized session. The example below uses an existing Playwright storage-state file, which must have been created through a legitimate login flow. It captures the full page as a PNG.

}Replace the example URL and selector with the target page and a stable indicator from that page. A selector wait is more meaningful than a fixed delay when the site exposes a reliable element. If authentication has expired, the wait may fail or the screenshot may capture a login screen; inspect the page and renew the session through the site’s normal process.

Choose the capture scope and output deliberately
- Viewport: captures what is currently visible in the browser window; use it when the reader should see a specific screen state.
- Element: capture a particular locator instead of the entire page. Playwright’s API also supports masking selected locators, useful for obscuring chosen page regions in the output.
- Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. Long or dynamic pages can change while loading, so check the final image for missing or shifted content. - Format and scale: documented formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Playwright also documents CSS and device-pixel scaling controls; choose settings appropriate to the needed detail and file size.

A saved browser state can contain cookies or headers that let someone act as the account. ScreenshotNeo’s September 29, 2026 guide warns that such state should be treated like a credential. Keep the file out of public repositories, shared folders, and build artifacts; restrict who and what can read it, and remove it when it is no longer needed. Do not put passwords or session material directly into screenshot output or logs.

Common problems and fixes
- The screenshot shows a login page: the browser context may not have a valid session, the session may have expired, or the target page may require a separate authentication step. Sign in normally, renew the authorized state, and confirm the private content is visible before capture.
- The capture is blank or incomplete: the page may still be loading or may render content only after interaction. Wait for a page-specific element that indicates the intended content is ready, then inspect the output; a fixed delay alone cannot prove that the page loaded correctly.
- The full-page image is clipped or misses content: confirm that full-page capture was selected rather than viewport capture. For dynamic pages, inspect the result and adjust the wait condition to the content that must be present.
- Playwright cannot read the state file: check that the path is correct and that the process has permission to read it. Regenerate the state through an authorized login if it is stale; do not share it to make the capture work.
- A bot check or CAPTCHA appears: screenshot software does not grant access or defeat that check. Use the site’s allowed access process; do not treat a challenge page as a successful capture of the protected content.
Reliability, privacy, and cost considerations
Manual capture has minimal setup but depends on the logged-in browser and a person verifying the result. Playwright adds code and maintenance in exchange for repeatability; the fragile parts are generally session expiration, MFA requirements, and page changes, not the screenshot call itself. A saved session is a sensitive credential, so automate only pages you are authorized to access and protect the state file accordingly.

For occasional work, an extension or native browser capture avoids building an automation setup. For recurring work, account for the time needed to renew sessions and adjust page-specific readiness checks. A hosted screenshot service may simplify capture for accessible pages, but do not send private credentials or assume it can inherit a local browser session unless the service’s current documentation explicitly explains a safe, authorized method.
